The words of Robert Fulghum’s essay, “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten,” hung on my kitchen wall like a whisper of God’s grace amidst our daily living when my three kids were tiny tots.  He reminds us with profound wonder how most of what you need to know about life you learn in kindergarten: share everything, play fair, clean up your own mess, to name a few.

If you’ve been a parent for any length of time, say, a few months, I’m guessing you’ve come to learn the school of parenting includes an even deeper sandbox of lessons from which to scoop meaning and purpose. And not because counting forward from the date on our birth certificate equates to wisdom either. Wisdom is knowing what you don’t know, which is a lot of not knowing much about anything when entering parenthood.

Kids are ego smashers, and the “in the sand experience of raising them” offers many opportunities to knock down our castles of pride and self-preservation. After 23 years of feet in the gritty stuff adventure, my soul walks much lighter having had fortresses of vainglory crumble.

The journey of raising kids does a number on our heart, whatever the real meaning is of such a cliché. But doing a number on us in terms of parenting means unexplainable twists and turns, tugs and pulls of emotions. And if we allow ourselves to learn from the flux, the experience can and should transform our heart in any number of ways.

For me, doing the mom thing for decades means a head full of retrospect and a heart which continues to morph in a million ways. Consider the following poem my parenting heartspeak in 100 words—inspired in full by the talented and wise Robert Fulghum.

Cherish everything.

Fight fair.

Don’t compare yourself to others.

Put everything into perspective.

Worry about your own mess.

Don’t expect others to see things the way you do.

Say I love you. Always.

Count to ten before anything.

Pray.

Trials and struggles enlighten you.

Live a grateful life.

Trust more, think less.

And love and hug and listen and laugh.

Speak, but also be.

Make some time for you every day.

When you feel like you’re alone on an island,

Know a million other parents share the same shore.

Communicate, then succeed and fail together.

Become a child once again.

Our children see the world from a different vantage point. Finding the courage to stoop to their level is akin to sprinkling pixie dust upon any beleaguered, disparaging, and calloused life views. The evils of fallen nature have yet to tarnish the innocence, so the wonder, wide-eyed amazement and unconditional love of everything in sight still tumbles through their spirit. Choosing to go along for the ride can awaken our tired adult selves and rebirth a knowing of what matters most.

And these are only some of the lessons we learn in the first decade. The second half of child-rearing is a close encounter of the undefinable kind, unfurling life lessons from every quantum cranny of the parent-child universe. Stay tuned as I sit crisscross applesauce in my empty nest and muse over how to pen the adolescent years into 100 words or less.

And if you know a mom or dad who would enjoy this post, please share. The more insight we can garner and pass around, the better journey for us as parents—which means even greater rewards for our kids going forward.

Transform on, crazy Mamas!

If you’ve ever wanted to rent a room inside of the Jersey Shore’s oldest and most iconic landmarks, here’s your chance. Guests will have a rare opprtunity to stay inside Lucy the Elephant on March 17, 18 or 19. The listing will go live on Airbnb’s website on March 5.

Lucy the Elephant

The interest in staying inside Lucy has been “tremendous” since the news was announced on Wednesday said Rich Helfant, executive director of the Save Lucy Committee.

“It’s not surprising,” said Helfant. “Lucy has graced the Shore for 138 years. As the oldest roadside attraction in America, she is the last of her kind, and older than both the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower.”

In honor of the length of Lucy’s time in Margate, the rentals are being offered at $138 per night.

Lucy the Elephant

Don’t expect the deal to become a regular occurance, said Helfant “I’ll never say never, but we are only planning to make her available for these three nights for the time being.”

According to Lucy’s Airbnb profile, “I’ve seen a lot in my years watching over the Jersey coastline, and since I never forget (obviously, I’m an elephant), I’ve got plenty of stories to share with curious guests. As you step inside my walls (and up 25 steps), you’ll be transported back in time to the 1800s, where you will feel the Victorian Era come alive.”

Lucy the Elephant

Helfert reports that Lucy receives more than 130,000 visitors every year. “Lucy is a part of so many fond memories. Her charm, her size and her history capture the imagination.”

Lucy the Elephant

These days, Lucy has Wifi, but she doesn’t house an indoor bathroom, but there will be a private one available at the base for the guest’s personal use. The building, which has been taken care of by the Save Lucy Committee, features Victorian-era furniture and decor. Guests can climb the riding carriage on Lucy’s back for a 360-degree view of Margate and the surrounding area.

Lucy the Elephant

“House rules” include certain restrictions. No children or pets are allowed to stay over and guests are not permitted to smoke or host parties.

“One of the reasons why we were so excited to list Lucy on Airbnb was the opportunity to expand her access and reach, providing a new avenue to even more people to enjoy her. That said, we want to make sure we are primarily preserving her for tours, so that hundreds of thousands of visitors can see her all year long,” said Helfert.

Once the listing goes live, only those with a verified Airbnb profile can apply for the rental. Airbnb will make a donation to the Save Lucy Committee toward the landmark’s preservation.

If your little beach bum has been attempting to ride the waves that are really your sofa cushions, it may be time to give him a real surf experience. Surf Diva, a surfing school that welcomes kids as young as five years old, is an iconic part of the San Diego surf scene. While your sofa will get a break, the skills your little gremmie learns will last much longer than a 15-minute thrill ride. Here’s what you need to know before you dive in.

Surf Diva teacher kids groovy SD web

Grab Your Boards

Founded in 1996, Surf Diva is one of the biggest and most well respected surf schools in the world. Their expert instructors work with surfers of all levels and ages, though the youngest little surfers must be at least age 5 and able to swim 10-15 yards in a pool.

To start the lesson, Surf Diva expert instructors will take the kiddos (and adults alike) out on the beach with some shore education. There, your little surfers will learn to respect the beach and wildlife all while in the water (read: doing the stingray shuffle). Then, the instructors will jump into the surf basics: paddling, board positioning and popping up to standing. After perfecting the techniques on land, it’s time to hit the water.

Surf’s Up! (Where It’s At)
Surf Diva teaches their lessons at La Jolla Shores Beach, the widely agreed “Best San Diego Beach to Learn Surfing.”  The Shores are known for their mellow waves and the soft, sandy bottoms that keeps little toes happy. If your young ones need any further enticing to get out there, this beach is also known for its wildlife sightings. On calm days, dolphins, stingrays and seals share the waters with surfers.

The beauty of La Jolla Shores beach are the waves. Surf Diva will take the kids to a tame, mellow and shallow area and keep your little surfers within their comfort zone. When your little dude or dudette rides his or her first wave, it just might become the best day of your little one’s life.

Insider’s Tip: Parking can be tricky in the area, especially on weekends. Your best bet is to park near the shop to start as there is a 90-min limit. Go in, sign your documents, pay and get your wetsuits (thankfully, boards will be down at the beach waiting for you) before driving down to the beach. There you can park without a restricted time limit.  Because you and your kiddos will be having the time of your life, the last thing you want to worry about is having to move your car in 90 minutes.

Catch a Wave! (When to Surf)

As we know, what passes as winter here in San Diego is quite tropical compared to the rest of the country. Even though the air may be a bit cooler, surfing is a year-round sport. Equip your kiddos with a wetsuit and they will barely know it’s winter. Surf Diva will rent you one for $5. Rent it without hesitation – this is a vital component for happy surfing kids.

The best bet to launch your little surfers is a private one-on-one lesson. A one-on-one instructor to kid ratio is the best way to ensure ample riding and devoted attention. This investment is for a fun skill and a lifetime of fun. They also run after school surfing programs, camps and much more.

Dear Confessional,

I’ve almost drowned three times. I’m a terrible swimmer. I am an adult woman with four children who swim better than I do—and yet I still pinch my nose under water and doggy paddle. My resilient children swim like fish in any temperature. Even though I may someday be taking swimming lessons with my 3-year old, this post is actually about some incredible elderly “wave-jumpers,” as I have named them. It’s bizarre and wonderful at the same time.

On our last holiday, my family took a trip to Spain, and my kids were practically hurling themselves at the beaches. As I got cozy in the sand to keep an eye on the crew, I noticed about a half-dozen elders on a mission in their bathing suits. Together, they marched up to the shore, repositioned their swim caps, and readjusted their goggles. Look past my kids in the pictures above. There they are.

My eyes were fixed, and I was ready to see some enviable swimming action, since mine involves pinching my nose and some unflattering flailing. Yet after entering the ocean, they just stood there, motionless.

Truthfully, I was so confused. They just stared ahead at the oversized waves. When the wave pushed them, they weren’t afraid—even if they had to take a step back to rebalance or boldly stepped a few feet forward, deeper. Sometimes, they would surprisingly dive into the bigger waves. Yet after all of that commotion, they always returned to their original spot in the chilly water and dug their feet back into the sand. What were they thinking? What was the purpose?

After a few weeks of trying to make sense of it all, it became clear—it changed everything. You see, these women were conquering the waves. They fearlessly stared at an overwhelming obstacle yet were at complete peace. Even though each wave pushed and pulled them, they always counterbalanced and became even stronger. For those women, the ocean served the same purpose, but their unique position in the sand and approach to the wave was personal.

So what does this all have to do with me? For me, these wise women encapsulated life. No matter our background, age, size, or color, we all stand the same—we stand together in the similar journey of living, growing, loving, and evolving, but our experience is always unique. Each moment is a wave. Even when life may knock us down or sneak up in an undercurrent—we live, we learn, and we reposition our feet for the next wave.

After living abroad in a few different countries and traveling globally, my absolute perspective has changed. We are all so beautiful, so different, and have so much to offer in our individual journeys.

You see—we are all like these wave-jumpers. Every experience is merely a moment to absorb, a wave approaching that will pass, with impressionable hindsight to teach us. My life is an open book. I love to help others when and how I can. Most who know me have labeled me, “Supermom.” I’m not, I just try my best and keep on couterbalancing and learning. I don’t judge. I don’t criticize. I don’t live with regret or guilt. It’s refreshing and it’s my personal masterpiece.

My life is a mix of all things and all emotions, mostly humor. So I invite you to be the fly on the wall of my open Confessional, filled with some candid mess-ups, laughs, and life lessons… stay tuned.

Indiana Dunes has a new name and a new camping policy! In February the former Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore was officially designated Indiana Dunes National Park. But don’t worry about the new name/designation causing major changes The same sand, solitude and park-ish fun is still very much available.

Even though the same outdoor adventures still exist at the U.S’s 61st national park (it’s also Indiana’s first!), there is one noticeable difference—you can now reserve a campsite up to six months in advance.

Prior to the national park designation, the 66 campsites were all first-come, first-serve. Now you can reserve one of 34 sites up to half a year before your visit. The other 32 are still first-come, first-serve sites.

As always, the park boasts 15,000 acres on outdoor awesomeness along 15 miles of Lake Michigan’s southern shore. Along with hiking the 50 miles of trails, park activities include biking, swimming, fishing, boating, geocaching bird watching and much more.

The Dunewood Campground at Indiana Dunes National Park is open annually from Apr. 1 through Nov. 1. Campsite facilities run $25 per night and include 54 drive-in sites and 12 walk-ins as well as restrooms and showers. The park does not provide electric or water hookups. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recently issued a recall of South Shore Furniture three-drawer dressers due to a possible tip-over hazard. The chests are potentially unstable, which could lead to tipping and entrapment.

According to a representative from South Shore Furniture, in an emailed statement, “As a member of the ASTM subcommittee on Furniture Safety, South Shore is an active participant in the industry’s ongoing effort to make furniture products safer. South Shore has been in operation and manufacturing furniture for now 78 years. We are a 3rd generation family owned business and as a family company, the well being of families – especially of babies and children – has and is always at the heart of our mission and operations.” The recall follows one injury and one fatality after the un-anchored chests of drawers tipped and fell. If you think you might have this item in your home, read on for more information.

Recalled Product Description: South Shore Libra Three-Drawer Chest

The recent recall includes South Shore Furniture’s Libra style three-drawer chests. Nearly 310,000 chests were sold in the United States and an additional 6,900 were sold in Canada. The chests were sold in nine colors and have metal handles (one on each drawer).

Each chest weighs 56 pounds. The measurements are 27½-inches high by 31¼-inches wide and 15½-inches deep. While some chests were sold individually, others came as part of a three-piece set. This set also included a bed and a nightstand. Currently, only the chest part of this set is under recall.

The dressers were sold for about $60 at Target.com, Walmart.com and Amazon as well as other online retailers from October 2009 through July 2019.

Why the Chests Were Recalled

Un-anchored furniture presents a tipping and entrapment hazard, especially for young children. The manufacturers of the chest received two reports of tip-overs, including one toddler fatality.

How to Tell if Your Chest Is Part of the Recall

Only the Libra style three-drawer chest is part of the current recall. For a full list of model number and colors, visit the CPSC’s website here.

What Parents Can Do

Stop using the chest immediately. Remove it from your home or move it somewhere your child can’t get to. A representative from South Shore Furniture said, in an emailed statement, “Our focus now is to make sure customers have the information they need to securely anchor their Libra 3-drawer chest to a wall. We are encouraging all customers who own Libra 3-drawer chests without a tip-over restraint kit to stop using the product, make sure it is in an area that children cannot access, and contact us to receive a full refund or free restraint kit by calling us at 800-290-0465 or visiting us online at www.southshorefurniture.com and clicking on “Recall Information”.” According to the CSPC’s recall, you can also contact South Shore Furniture at 855-215-4932 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday for more information. Recall remedies include a full refund with free pickup or a free tip-over anchor kit (which comes with free in-home installation). If you don’t want to wait for the free pickup, remove the drawer slides from one side and send them back to South Shore for a full refund.
