The only thing more daunting then the simple question “What’s for dinner?” is the more complicated  “Where should we eat?” Finding a restaurant that offers a stress-free dining experience (think picky-eater-approved menu options and a low-key atmosphere) can be challenging. Luckily, diners—those greasy spoons beloved for generations—check off all the boxes. Here are 10 of our favorite places to cuddle up in a booth in the DMV.

29 Diner

This 1940s-style diner, not to be confused with Metro 29 Diner, was established in 1947 and is open 24 hours, except Monday, when it was closed. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992, the diner offers brown gravy fries, meatloaf, barbecue and traditional breakfast items. The kids menu has pancakes, French toast, spaghetti and grilled cheese, and includes a drink. Save room for a slice of or an orange soda float.

Metro 29 Diner

If it’s good enough for “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” host Guy Fieri and former Vice President and current presidential hopeful Joe Biden, it’s good enough for your family. The menu is extensive with small “munchies,” meats from the carving board, triple-decker sandwiches and specials such as franks and beans. A kids menu for the 12 and under set has eight animal-named dishes that include Jello, chocolate pudding, ice cream or chocolate chip cookies and milk or soda. Examples include the Monkey, a char-broiled burger, the Zebra, a fried flounder filet and the Bear, which is chicken fingers.

Lincoln’s Waffle Shop

We don’t know if Lincoln was a huge waffle fan, but across from Ford’s Theatre, where he was shot, and next to Peterson House, where he died, sits this eatery. A family-run business since 1990, it serves specials such as country fried steak, banana pancakes and sloppy joes. Grab a bite early. It opens at 5:30 a.m. and closes at 3 p.m. on weekends, 4:30 p.m. weekdays.

Pete’s Diner

This small diner has welcomed some big names. For instance, former Speaker of the House John Boehner has been spotted there many a morning. Washington DC Eater describes it as a “come-as-you-are favorite for Hill staffers. It also makes a mean bulgogi.” It’s a muffin’s throw from the Library of Congress so stop here for a bite before or after a dose of culture at the world’s biggest library.

Bob and Edith’s Diner

With four locations in Northern Virginia, this diner serves standard diner fare such as steak, eggs, sausage, scrapple, hot cakes and omelets at either the counter or a table. Entrees such as country fried steak, liver and onions, and a fish platter are available, too.

Tastee Diner

Scrambling eggs since 1935, this diner has three locations throughout Maryland, two of which – Laurel and Silver Spring – serve beer and wine. Open round-the-clock, the diners have jukeboxes and televisions to keep younger ears and eyes entertained. To fill mouths, check the daily blue plate specials such as the crab cake platter on Wednesdays at the Bethesda location. Bonus: Kids eat free from 5-8 on weeknights. Choices include a Wacky Waffle, Might Mini Pancakes and Tastee Tenders.

The Diner

Gotta love a succinct name. Describing itself as a modern diner with old-school appeal, this round-the-clock eatery offers breakfast faves such as diner hash and steel-cut oats, plus entrees like jambalaya and fish tacos. Situated in the heart of Adams Morgan, The Diner is pretty close to the Smithsonian National Zoological Park.

Tom’s Diner

Not just the name of a Susanne Vega song, Tom’s Diner has been literally catering to the Manassas area for 25 years. Its extensive menu includes two kids menus: one for breakfast and one for lunch and dinner. Grownups can expect the staple diner delicacies such as omelets, country fried steak and pancakes. Kiddos 12 and younger will likely gravitate toward burgers, pancakes or French toast.

Silver Diner

This chain has 14 locations and one coming in Maryland and Virginia. The head chef works with area farms to provide locally sourced menu items, and the menu includes calorie and fat measurements to help diners eat cleanly – if they want to. The kids menu has the typical stuff but some unexpected items such as gluten-free coconut French toast, roasted chicken pot pie and a salmon quinoa bowl. There’s also a Kids Club through which members earn points toward rewards for free food and get invited quarterly member-only events.

6 D.C. Restaurants with Outside-the-Box Kid Menus

So Worth the Wait! 13 Restaurants with Awesome Pre-Meal Activities

She’s a New York Times Bestselling author, TV host, chef and now Ayesha Curry is a Whole Foods meal kit creator too!

Curry recently teamed up with Whole Foods Market to curate a line of meal kits. The kits, which fall under Curry’s lifestyle brand Homemade, will feature fresh, local-to-the-customer ingredients provided by Local Crate.

According to Yahoo! Finance, Curry said, “As a devout Whole Foods Market shopper, I’m thrilled to be partnering with Whole Foods Market and Local Crate to launch my new line of premium meal kits.” She also added, “I’m passionate about helping families get back around the dinner table and developed my meal kits for cooks of all skill levels to execute a delicious weeknight meal the whole family will love.”

Homemade Meal Kit options include Honey-Lime Chicken Breasts with Wasabi Mashed Potatoes and Sautéed Garlic Kale, Pomegranate Chimichurri Steak with Spiced-Rubbed Roasted Parsnips and Carrots, Cheesy Baked Penne Primavera with Ricotta, Parmesan & Mozzarella and Warm Vegetable & Chickpea Coconut Curry Bowls with Basmati Rice.

Sadly, for right now the kits are only available at two Whole Foods Market locations in California—Harrison (Oakland) and Stevens Creek (Cupertino). But here’s to hoping that Whole Foods rolls out Curry’s kits across the country!

Whole Foods Is Offering Early Prime Day Deals

Carb counters, keto enthusiasts and paleo lovers rejoice! Now you can get that everything bagel taste without the actual dough.

Trader Joe’s shoppers probably already recognize this everything bagel minus the bagel idea. TJ’s Everything but the Bagel Seasoning is a popular pick that gives customers the chance to recreate the onion-ish, garlic-y, salty, sesame goodness without having to eat a carb-heavy snack.

Even though you can get the savory shaker at any TJ’s store, now you have another option. For those of you who don’t live near the grocery retailer, CVS is selling a similar sort of seasoning. While you might know the chain primarily as a pharmacy, CVS also sells a small assortment of grocery-like items.

CVS’s Gold Emblem Everything Bagel Seasoning ($3.19) varies slightly from the TJ’s fave, but still follows the same basic idea. With salt, dehydrated garlic, dehydrated onion and a few other select ingredients, you can flavor anything from a steak to pizza sauce!

You can check out the awesome everything bagel copycat online here. But you can’t order yourself a shaker full of seasoning goodness. This spice selection is only available in stores.

When Your Favorite Trader Joe’s Item Disappears, Here’s What You Should Do

Your New Year’s resolutions may have fallen by the wayside, but that doesn’t mean you have to go all in when it comes to dessert-time. There’s a way to get your sweet fix without totally straying. And pretty soon your fave grocer will have a new option. Trader Joe’s ice cream line is getting an addition—and it includes low-calorie flavors.

In a recent Inside Trader Joe’s podcast, a TJ’s product developer dished on the soon-to-be addition of high-protein, low-calorie ice creams to the store’s frozen foods section. And if you’re wondering why you Trader Joe’s hasn’t already jumped on the low-cal chilled treat bandwagon, according to the product developer, “All the ones on the market have sugar alcohols, which is something we avoid in our private label brands.”

So what can you expect from TJ’s new high-protein/low-cal treat? Judging by the info from the podcast, the creamy delight will come in two flavors—cookies and cream and peanut butter chocolate. One pint will total just over 300 calories. While it’s not exactly on par with eating a steak, the cookies and cream flavor provides 20 grams of protein and the chocolate peanut butter will have 23 grams.

Even though the podcast promises the debut of the ice cream flavors sometime soon, as of now there’s no word on a debut date.

What’s your idea of the perfect purchase at Whole Foods Market? Recently employees and customers revealed their picks to INSIDER. Read on for some of the most sought-after selections. Did your favorite Whole Foods product make the cut?

Sir Kensington's Special Sauce

Amazon

It's non-GMO, gluten free and a favorite. Yep, shoppers picked this condiment as one of the top products. Slather this sauce on a hamburger, veggie burger or just about anything else.

365 Tortilla Chips

Amazon

One customer told INSIDER that these restaurant style chips are his favorite item in the store. And with that taste...well, they should be.

The Cheese Section

Courtesy of Whole Foods Market

Okay, so an entire department isn't exactly one pick. But the cheese section does have anywhere from 250 to 1,000 selections—making it a store standout.

Hummus

Amazon

Yum! With plenty of varieties to choose from, Whole Foods Market hummus is a spread that shoppers seem to love.

Stone Crabs

Courtesy of Whole Foods Market/Georg Beyer

Even though the seafood section as a whole is a fan favorite, it looks like the stone crabs stood apart as one of the best picks.

Dandelion Greens

Courtesy of Whole Foods Market

Unlike other salad selections, dandelion greens aren't exactly easy to come by. And that's precisely why Whole Foods Market's customers choose this healthy choice as one of the winners.

Gorgonzola Panini

Courtesy of Whole Foods Market/Georg Beyer

Take a trip to the hot food section and you'll find this top-placing sandwich. Of course, it wasn't the only prepared foods pick. But one loyal customer did note that they make a special trip to their local store just for this superior sammie.

Bananas

Yep, Whole Foods customers are bananas about...well, the bananas. Even though this is a grocery store staple, it still earns high marks from the retailer's fans.

Waterloo Water

Courtesy of Whole Foods

It's refreshing, it has zero calories and it's naturally flavored! Waterloo Watermelon Sparkling Water isn't just tasty, it's a top Whole Foods choice among regular customers.

Grass-Fed Steak

Like the seafood section, the beef section also got top marks. But it was the grass-fed steak that truly caught the attention of Whole Foods shoppers.

The Best New & Limited-Edition Valentine's Day Candy to Sweeten Your Holiday

D.C. isn’t the only town teeming with American history. Philadelphia played a key role in the American Revolution, was a meeting place for the Founding Fathers of the United States (think: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin), and even served as a temporary U.S. capital while Washington, D.C. was under construction. A straight two hour, 45 minute shot up I-95, Philly is the perfect weekend getaway for DMV families (especially those that love history). Pack your overnight bag and fill your day in Philly with these fun activities.

Photo: Smith Memorial Playground and Playhouse

1. Sit Back and Enjoy the Slide. Smith Memorial Playground and Playhouse is situated on 6.5 acres and features a 44-foot wooden slide, a bright tot lot, swings on swings on swings, and more! On rainy days, the fun’s just getting started. The indoor playhouse offers up an eat-in kitchen, train tables, foam blocks and a climb-on train.

2. Ring the Bell. Hanging in Philadelphia’s Liberty Bell Center is the Liberty Bell–the most famous bell in American History. Weighing more than 2,000 pounds, the bell rang in 1776 to announce the independence of the U.S. from Great Britain. The last time It was rung was in 1846 for George Washington’s birthday.

Photo: Logan Hotel

3. Spend the night. Located in the heart of City Center, the Logan Hotel is currently offering a Family Package with room accommodations that includes a kids pack with a fun animal mask, sunglasses, coloring book, crayons and backpack they can take home. Big kids will love to stop and examine the cool art pieces that cover the hallways of The Logan. The hotel even has their own “Iron Man” found by the front entrance that your crew will love to pose by. The hidden art gems around every corner can be best explained on a guided tour by one of the hotel staff where they will also tell the stories of Grace Kelly, Ben Franklin, and even Rocky Balboa. In addition, the hotel is nearby a bunch of kid-friendly attractions like the Franklin institute, Philadelphia Zoo, Please Touch Museum, and the Reading Terminal.

4. Have a Hands-On Experience. The Please Touch Museum is not a place where kids have to stand still and use inside voices. Featuring six interactive exhibits, theater performances, and a cool carousel, the museum bags interaction, and lots of it.

Photo: Campos

5. Chow down. Carnivore kids (and their grown-ups) would be remiss for not grabbing a cheese steak from Campos, known for their shredded steak and super-soft bun. Not into submarines? Try the fried cheese curds from Bud and Marilyn’s or over-the-top ice cream cones from Big Gay Ice Cream. Bon appetite!

6. Prevent brain drain. At Franklin Institute, Junior won’t even know he’s in learning mode. Some of the sneaky educational stuff she’ll find at the science and technology museum includes a two story human heart that visitors can walk through (!!), a mirror maze and a train factory.

Photo: Franklin Square

7. Square away. What doesn’t Franklin Square have? That is the question. The square features a beautiful fountain, the Philadelphia Park Liberty Carousel, and a miniature golf course.

8. Bug out! Look at, hold, play, or taste (yes, taste!) some of the buggies on display at the the Insectarium and Butterfly Pavilion. Kids will ooh and aah at the Madagascar hissing cockroaches and Mexican tarantulas.

The world is getting keyed-up for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, and of course, New York is no exception. If this Olympic Games is like any other, New Yorkers in every borough will cheer on U.S. athletes — as well as competitors from other countries considered first homes for so many transplants — all month long. We’ve found a way to kick off the festivities with the kids in style!

photo: via Rio 2016 Facebook page

Welcome to Rio!
From Friday, August 5 to Thursday, August 11, “Rio on the Hudson” will take over Pier 26 in Hudson River Park. Free and open to the public, the event will transform Pier 26 into a playscape for young and old inspired by the Olympic Games and host country Brazil.

Visitors can expect beaches, real palm trees, samba music and dancers and Capoeira performances, as well as Brazilian DJs, live graffiti artists creating large-scale Olympic-themed murals, and Brazilian food and drink.

Opening Night
If your family likes its Olympic Games-watching experience to be communal, this might be your spot to view to the Opening Ceremony broadcast. The event opens at 5 p.m. on Friday August 5, with a team USA Celebration featuring a cauldron lighting and kickoff at 7 p.m., followed by the Opening Ceremony broadcast at 7:30 on a big screen.

Meet & Greet Olympians
One of the highlights of the event — especially, we imagine, for aspiring mini Olympians — will be meet and greets with Olympic athletes and current Paralymipans, the latter of which will be heading to Rio in September to compete.

Athletes currently scheduled to appear include Christie Rampone, Mia Hamm, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Rudy Garcia-Tolson, Scout Bassett, Steve Serio and Sam Kavanagh.

Fun & Games
Rio on the Hudson will give visitors a few opportunities to test their own athletic prowess. Kids can participate in an Olympic Hula Hoop contest; test their speed in the “dash” against Olympian Allyson Felix by racing against her high school or Olympic times, and join a pickup beach volleyball game.

Additional kids programming includes face-painting, and multiple crafting activities such as making your very own Olympic torch.

Learn & Watch Some Brazilian Moves
Both kids and adults can take lessons in the Brazilian martial art Capoeria, and then see how the pros (of all ages) do it at performances. Rio on the Hudson will also feature multiple Samba performances and mixers.

Don’t Forget to Eat
All that dancing and dashing will make you hungry. Top NYC Brazilian chefs will be cooking up traditional and authentic pao de quiejo, fried plantains with sett chili sauce, steak & cilantro empanadas, beef skewers and flan and caramel.
