Now that flying isn’t the means of travel many parents are willing to take and we are spending more time outside, camping is the perfect solution to getting away without the stress of flying or staying at someone’s home or at a hotel.

For parents that are considering camping with their baby or young child for the first time, there are probably lots of questions. We are here to tell you that these questions are completely normal, and that you are not the first person to be asking. What do I need to do to keep my baby safe while camping? Where is my baby going to sleep? What do I need to pack? These are just a few questions parents are thinking about. We asked some moms and dads who have young kids and a passion for camping, plus a few gear experts to share their thoughts and advice. They had a lot to tell! Here are some of our favorites in terms of the basics, activities, and gear.

Where Should My Baby Sleep?

One of the hardest parts about being a parent is making sure that everyone gets a quality night’s sleep. Being outside and having few lights can add to the difficulty. Everyone that we asked agreed that it is essential to make a solid plan in advance. Even if your baby sleeps in a crib at home, we have found that several companies make lightweight and portable travel beds. Keep in mind that you want your baby to have their own space that can be portable for afternoon naps and easy to move into the tent for nighttime sleeping. During the day, the baby can nap next to you while you relax or read a book. In the evening, you can easily bring the travel bed inside your tent for a secure space for the baby to sleep. We also recommend having a night-light or flashlight handy just in case you need something during the night when it can be quite dark.

Where Can My Baby Relax during the Day?

It’s a beautiful day and all you want to do is sit by the fire or fish by the lake. Here’s where you run into a couple of problems: your baby doesn’t want to sit on your lap or in your arms, and you don’t want to put them on the ground because of the dirt and bugs. We know it’s camping, but first-timers usually have a different set of expectations in terms of keeping their baby clean. If you find yourself in this situation, we recommend having something like KidCo’s GoPod Travel Activity Seat. It allows your baby to sit comfortably and stay entertained. The activity seat offers the perfect eye level for your baby to see what’s around them, and they won’t miss out on any of the fun! While you get to enjoy your surroundings, your baby will have a good time too. We love that it folds up to a small size and is lightweight. Seeing many families post their camping fun with this item made us want to see what this product was all about.

How Do I Keep My Baby Entertained?

While camping it is important to enjoy the simple pleasures of nature. With that in mind, there is no need for any distractions from screens or any other devices. Gazing up at the sky and just taking in the beautiful view is a great way to feel the joy that nature brings.

How Can You Maximize the Gear You Bring?

It is inevitable to feel like you need to bring your entire house when you go camping—especially with a baby. While camping, it is extremely important to only take what’s actually necessary for the entire family. Try and double up the use of items. For example, your baby can use the travel seat as a high chair to eat and as a rest stop by the lake. Lots of parents love babywearing and have told us that sometimes they will leave a heavy stroller at home and opt for a sling or baby carrier. There are many different brands and the best advice we received was to ask around, do your research, and make a selection based on your personal preferences and habits.

How Can Your Baby Stay Protected from the Sun?

The sweltering summer sun can be a lot for every family member. We think it is especially important to keep your baby’s skin in mind. It is essential that your baby has a protective hat and a physical sunscreen applied if they are over six-months-old. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says that all kids should be wearing a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. This is so important that we’re taking a direct quote from the experts: “The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends a water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher for any extended outdoor activity. Regardless of the SPF, though, it’s important to apply one ounce (two tablespoons) 30 minutes before going outside and reapply it every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating.”

Also, don’t forget that cute hat can protect baby from the sun’s harmful rays, especially if your baby is under six-months-old. Parents and gear experts told us that they like playards that double as a safe spot for kids to play and offer some protection from the sun.

Camping as a family has so much to offer. It’s a chance to be amazed by Mother Nature, see things through the eyes of your child, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Oh, and don’t forget the bug repellent!

I'm a mom of two children, wife, and love my fur baby, traveling and playing UNO.  My passion is discovering services and products by entrepreneurs, especially those that can cut down on some screen time and help our family create lasting memories together.

Target Has All the Waterslides You Need to Survive the Summer

We can’t do anything about the sweltering summer temperatures (boo!), but we can offer tips for keeping kids cool, calm and collected through the dog days of summer (yay!). Here are some of our favorite ways to beat the heat. And the best part? You can do all of them without breaking a sweat. (Sorry, we had to.)

photo: dhanelle via Pixabay

1. Keep It Cool
A shady spot is a must for outdoor activities, and to really keep baby’s skin from getting sweaty and irritated, slather on Pipette’s Baby Cream to Powder. It works like baby powder, but without the talc or messy application. When you apply this cream, you’ll feel it dry into a silky powder that minimizes sweat and chafing. Made with sugarcane-derived squalane and mango seed butter for moisturizing and arrowroot powder and tapioca starch to wick away wetness, it’s the perfect cream to keep your child cool and comfortable on warm days.

2. Take Cover
If you’re planning to log a lot of hours in the sun with your mini-me, you’ll need to keep an arsenal of baby-friendly sunscreen at the ready. Our top pick: Honest Mineral Sunscreen. The zinc oxide-based formula is rated at SPF 50+, and because it’s made with shea butter and coconut oil and without chemicals, parabens, fragrance or dyes, it’s gentle enough for baby. (Find more of our sunscreen recommendations here: The Best Baby Sunscreens.)

3. Just Breathe
To keep baby from feeling hot and bothered this summer, ditch the polyester duds and look to breathable fabrics made from natural fibers. Cotton is a classic pick, but bamboo is taking the children’s textile market by storm for good reason. Not only is it soft and breathable, it absorbs up to three times its own weight to help wick away sweat from babyies’ skin, keeping them cool and dry. (It’s a great choice for bed sheets, too!)

4. Drink Up
Keeping baby hydrated is important year-round but even more crucial when the mercury starts to rise. Offer baby liquids frequently, especially when you’re out and about, to ward off dehydration. Keep liquids cool by popping bottles or sippy cups into a small insulated bag with an ice pack when you head outdoors. Planning a longer outing? Freeze liquids before you leave and you’ll have an icy drink to enjoy.

5. Just Add Water
A little water exploration can go a long way in creating fun summer experiences with babies—and keeping them cool, of course! Pack the swim diaper and sunscreen and head to your local splash pad or zero-depth entry leisure pool, or bring the fun home with a small inflatable pool, splash mat or water table you can set up in your own backyard.

6. Let Loose
Imagine this: It’s hot out, the humidity is high, and you’re trapped in a cocoon of fabric with another human being’s body heat emanating through it. That is how your baby may feel after spending too much time in a carrier this summer. Consider opting for a stroller (with a sufficient sun shade!) instead. If you (or your baby) prefer a carrier, look for one made of light, breathable fabric, such as the Bamboo Moby Wrap, to help keep both of you comfortable. (Check out the latest baby carriers here: The Best New Baby Carriers)

7. Turn Up the Air
Adding a portable fan to your baby’s stroller will help keep them cool and comfortable. Our pick: the O2COOL® 4-Inch Portable Stroller Clip Fan has an easy-to-use design that clips onto any stroller frame and a bendable neck that allows you to adjust the direction of the airflow for maximum comfort.

8. Timing Is Everything
To avoid the energy drain that comes from being in the heat, plan your outdoor adventures for the early morning or evening hours instead. Besides letting you take advantage of cooler temps, you and baby will benefit from smaller crowds, whether you’re heading to the park (no wait for the baby swings!) or the zoo (finally, a front-row glimpse of the lions!). If you want to get out in the afternoon, choose an indoor spot like an aquarium, pet store or the local mall, where you can take advantage of the AC.

9. Spray It On
Most babies have a blast playing outside on a sunny day, but the elements can take their toll quickly on sensitive skin. After extensive sun exposure, reach for a moisturizing spritz like Mustela After Sun Hydrating Spray, which is made with avocado oil and shea butter to soothe, nourish and refresh your little one’s skin.

10. Monitor Magic
A baby monitor with up-to-date temperature sensing technology can keep baby sleeping comfortably through those hot summer nights. Because infants aren’t able to regular their body temperatures as well as adults, a too warm or too cool environment can make your little one restless. Most experts recommend setting the thermostat between 68 and 72. One option: The Philips Avent DECT Baby Monitor with Temperature Sensor and Night Mode will not only let you monitor the climate in baby’s room, it allows you to create customizable settings to alert you to changes in nursery temperature changes.

9 Summer Essentials Every New Mom Should Carry

Top 10 Summer Safety Rules for Kids in Cars

Your Bucket List for Baby’s First Summer

When it comes to summer camp planning, you’re usually juggling schedules and signing up way in advance. When the big first day of camp finally arrives, make sure you’re prepared with a few simple steps brought to you by moms just like you, who have been there, done that and made it through. Read on for our top summer camp prep tips any parent can use.

1. Stock up on supplies.

iStock

You’ll need extra Band-Aids on hand, bug spray and sunscreen. Plenty of sunscreen. Find the best brand and buy two, because most camps where kids are outdoors will want you to send a sunscreen and often bug repellant with your kiddo. To help your kiddos apply the sunscreen to their faces effectively, consider a stick lick this one. Great for little noses.

2. Label everything.

school labels
Name Bubbles

Do yourself a solid and order some preprinted, peel and stick labels like these ones. Then stick them on everything: hats, water bottles, sunscreen, even lip balm. Don’t assume your kid will keep track of everything even if they do a good job of it during the school year. It’s summer camp. All bets are off.

3. Be prepared for the aftercamp affect.

iStock

Just like after school, kids that finish a day of summer camp are usually hungry when you pick them up. Keep some post-camp snacks in your car or backpack for pickup. Be aware that kids are often tired, emotional or even cranky after the first few days of camp. Having a cold fresh bottle of water and their favorite tunes to play can help them decompress from a day jam-packed with sensory processing.

4. Do a dry run. Then add 15 minutes to it.

Pexels

Unless your kiddo's summer camp is at the same location as their school, try out the commute before the first day. Time yourself to see how long it will take, and don't forget to factor in things like the pick-up line or a crowded parking lot. Many camps also require a parent to sign or check-in and check out their child each day.

5. Order more than one camp shirt.

IStock

If your camp has cute, brightly colored shirts it's worth ordering more than one so you aren't constantly washing them every night. Kids get next-level grubby at summer camps, so this is a mom hack that will save you time.

6. Dress for success.

iStock

As previously mentioned, kids don't stay clean at summer camp so don't send them in their best clothes. Easy on/off pants or shorts for quick bathroom breaks are an essential since kids won't always know the layout of the place, especially on the first day. That being said, accidents happen, so pack a complete change of clothes for your kid in their pack each day. We suggest a large Ziplock bag that you can label with your child's name, which can double as a dry-bag for any wet or muddy clothes that get sent home.

7. Update your emergency contact list.

Take into consideration vacations and work schedules in the summer, and update your just-in-case contacts accordingly. If it's usually your best mom friend but you know they'll be out of town two out of the three weeks your kid is in camp, designate an alternative.

Sunburn is a literal pain. Now there is a way to take the guesswork out of knowing when to reapply your sunscreen. SPOTMYUV is the first clinically proven UV detection sticker that can tell you if your sunscreen is working.

The small clear SPOTs go on clear and change to purple to let you know when the SPF has worn away. The color change is reversible, so they will last through multiple sunscreen applications.

You can wear SPOTs on any part of the body where skin is exposed. The SPOTs are waterproof, sweat-resistant, hypoallergenic and will last all day. SPOTMYUV’s patented dermatrue skin mimicking technology allows sunscreen to wear off the sticker at the same rate as it wears off your skin as you run, play and swim. These are perfect to throw in your bag or you kid’s camp backpack.

Must-Have Baby Gear for a Day at the Beach

If you love books, and love to read (you’re our kind of person!), the LA Times Festival of Books in Apr. is an event you simply can’t miss. Held on the USC campus, this outdoor festival celebrates books of all kinds and for all ages with authors, singers, performers and even characters come to life. Bring your little bookie and discover some new favorite authors, books, stories, songs and adventures, together.

The Good Stuff
Where to go and what to do? First, head straight for the Children’s Stage, where you’ll want to set up camp because there is a constant stream of entertainment scheduled on both days starting at 10 a.m. until the festival ends. You can easily spend all day both days here and not get bored. (Totally true, we’ve tested it out. Just bring plenty o’ water, snacks and shade—mini umbrellas are awesome.) Kid’s book readings are interspersed with lively musical acts, so kids can dance & get the ants out of their pants and aren’t required to simply sit still and listen all day.

There are also amazing demonstrations, conversations and readings geared for adults, so if you have someone you can take turns watching the kids with, perhaps you can sneak away to see some of your favorite authors.

Speaking of Good Stuff: What to Stuff (In A Backpack)
Since nearly all of the family-friendly activities are outdoors (and there’s never enough shade to go around) you’ll also want to slather on the sunscreen, don sun hats, and pack a water bottle for every person in your group. Food is available just about everywhere at trucks, stands or restaurants, or feel free to bring your own. Bring a sheet or blanket that folds up small—when you find a shady spot, you might want to set up camp.

The Skinny on Coming & Going
Admission to the festival is free for everyone! But there is a parking fee at USC, where the festival takes place, and in some lots at the Coliseum. Due to heavy traffic (this is also where everyone has to come to the Science Center and NHM), we recommend taking the Metro Expo Line, exiting at the Expo Park/USC Station.

Be sure to check online before you go for details about taking the Metro (which also gets you a discount off all your Festival book purchases all day), the bus, driving or parking. If you have little ones who tire easily, you may also wish to bring wheels in the form of strollers or wagons. It gets hot, they’ll want to be carried, and you’ll be too busy carrying books (and water, blankets, hats, sunscreen, snacks, etc).

Some special indoor events require tickets, which are free, and can be reserved in advance online or have limited numbers available at the festival on the day of the event, at the festival ticketing booth.

The kids might be heading back to school, but that doesn’t mean that the summer or the sunshine is over. As kids race out to the playgrounds for recess and P.E., are they being properly protected from sun exposure? Supergoop! wants to help by bringing free sunscreen to schools across the nation.

Supergoop!, which sells award-winning, everyday-use sunscreens for adult and kids, is working to protect kids in school with the company’s Ounce by Ounce giving program. During the 2019-2020 school year Supergoop! has committed to donating 3,000 pumps of it’s new 100 percent mineral sunscreen to Pre-K and Kinder classes throughout the country. All they have to do is ask. As of now the company has already partnered with 150 classrooms.

When Supergoop! CEO, founder and former teacher Holly Thaggard began the company, her intention was to get free sunscreen in all classrooms in America because she wanted to teach kids about the importance of SPF. Her initiative has been slow-going however, due to FDA regulations which prevent many states from allowing the distribution of sunscreen in schools without a doctor’s note. Ten years later and new legislation in some states, as well as a bigger platform to communicate with parents and schools has made it easier for Supergoop! to get its sunscreen into classrooms.

All parents need to do to is contact Supergoop! via email at ouncebyounce@supergoop.com with the contact info of a teacher, school nurse or administrator and the company will reach out with their Supergoop! Ounce by Ounce Starter Kit, which includes a 50-ounce pump of our Skin Soothing Mineral Sunscreen SPF 40. You can learn more about the company’s products here.

This New Study on Sunscreen Chemicals Will Surprise You

If you grew up in the ’80s, chances are you spent your summers riding your bike to your friend’s house and only heading back home when the streetlights came on. Things are a little different in 2019 and this hilarious video of 1989 moms versus 2019 moms highlights exactly how much things have changed.

Funny moms Meredith Masony of That’s Inappropriate and Tiffany Jenkins of Juggling the Jenkins have teamed up to compare and contrast the differences between how moms handled those long summer days in the ’80s versus now and they’ve summed it up perfectly in the video below.

Those days of baking in the sun and sending the kids off for a day of roaming the neighborhood with nothing more than a Pop Tart have been replaced with fresh ostrich milk, 100 SPF sunscreen and meditating with goats. Pretty accurate.

The only question that remains is are you a 1989 mom, a 2019 mom or a little bit of both?
