Mattel recently announced the American Girl 2020 Girl of the Year—and this year, the doll is the first doll with hearing loss to receive the title!

So who is the 2020 Girl of the Year? The American Girl doll is Joss Kendrick and according to Mattel she is, “A  fierce athlete born with hearing loss and a passion for surfing and competitive cheer.”

Not only does Joss surf and cheer but she’s also an inspiration, encouraging girls to try new things, act as a team player and break stereotypes. To create this very special doll, American Girl teamed up with 17-year-old surf prodigy (and soon-to-be Olympic athlete) Caroline Marks, Women’s Deaf Shortboard champion Crystal DaSaliva, owners of Fury Athletics, Sara Jo Moen and Julie Peterson, Professor of English at Gallaudet University and a specialist in portrayals of deaf characters in adolescent literature Dr. Sharon Pajka, Ph.D., educational audiologist Jennifer Richardson, Au.D. and professional big wave surfer and co-founder of the Committee for Equity in Women’s Surfing, Bianca Valenti.

Jamie Cygielman, General Manager of American Girl, said in a press release, “American Girl has a rich legacy of creating timeless characters who encourage girls to reach for new heights and discover who they’re meant to be.” Cygielman continued, “We’re proud to welcome Joss Kendrick, whose stories are sure to instill confidence and character in girls who are learning to think about the possibilities in their own lives. Working with Olympic hopeful surfer Caroline Marks adds real-world inspiration about what can happen when you go ‘all in’ on your dreams.”

American Girl is partnering with the Hearing Loss Association of America in honor of Joss. The collab will include a $25,000 donation from American Girl to HLAA and support for the organization’s 2020 Walk4Hearing.

Joss is available in all American Girl retail locations and online at americangirl.com starting Dec. 31, 2019, for $98 (the price includes one Joss book too). You can also purchase the Joss-themed books from American Girl for $7.99 each. The doll comes with a swimsuit, hoodie, shorts and a removable hearing aid. Additional Joss products, such as a cheer backpack, competition shoes, slides and her English Bulldog, Murf the Surf Dog are also available. Look for a brand-new Volkswagen Surf Bus to go along with Joss next spring!

The Tree That Got Away

It was about 10 feet tall and the morning sun was burning off the dew on its needles, making it glow. It was halfway down a hill of trees, but none of them was as full nor held as perfect a pyramidal shape as this one. It was perfect, and we would soon discover it would become the standard-bearer for every Christmas tree to come.

There was just one hitch. It was July, and we were two states and 5 months away from our home, and Christmas.

We were riding on the Virginia Creeper Trail, a rails-to-trails descent in Virginia that rolls through miles of farmland. Halfway down, nature and 20-ounces of blue Gatorade paid a visit to my 5-year old son, who raced for the privacy of a nearby grove of fraser firs.

I should note here that he did not drop trou on any of the trees. Realizing even in the heat of the moment that these beauties would end up in someone’s living room, I redirected his aim. So, while he found relief in the grass, I couldn’t help but notice what a delightful oasis we’d stumbled upon. The air smelled of Christmas morning, and trees grew along paths reminiscent of Scottish labyrinths. Our footsteps fell silently on needle-cushioned earth.

“We’re in the Candy Cane Forest!” exclaimed my niece, who had tracked us down, and who was also a big fan of Buddy the Elf. “Hey, look at this!” my oldest son shouted. We found him, awe-filled, in front of our perfect, glowing tree. It was pure magic.

After persuading them that we could not, in fact, take it home with us (no saw, hadn’t paid for it, nothing to strap it to except for Mom’s back, and besides, it was still swimsuit season), we hopped back on our bikes.

The morning after Thanksgiving, we were bundled up, still full from the previous day’s feast and sluggish from hours spent watching football on the couch. While making coffee, my husband suggested we take a ride to the hardware store to pick out a fresh Christmas tree.

“The hardware store?” my son balked. “No, Daddy. We already have our tree. We have to go back to The Creeper. I know exactly where it is.”

A 12-hour drive was not on my husband’s agenda, but neither was the hardware store on my children’s. They’d seen the promised land of treedom and would accept nothing less. We compromised. Just north of the city, we spent a lovely day in the fresh air, without a single electronic device nearby, walking off some of the thousands of calories that had been the gift of the day before.

We came home with a very fine fresh Christmas tree. It wasn’t THE tree, but we loved it anyways like you sometimes must. And so began our family tradition of trying to forever fill the tree stand of the “Tree That Got Away.”

Now through Christmas, share a photo of your family’s REAL Christmas tree memory-making experience for a chance to win $1,000!

Shelley Massey is a writer and editor for family travel, fitness, and lifest‌yle publications. She enjoys exploring with her four kids ages 10 & under, running, good food, entertaining, and great stories. And though she and her family live happily in Atlanta, their hearts are in Tennessee.

Even though Chrissy Teigen is a gorgeously famous SI swimsuit model, accomplished cookbook author and entrepreneur, she’s kind of like the rest of us mamas. Teigen recently tweeted about her recent purchase for daughter Luna’s preschool lunches—and it might sound familiar.

So your kiddo isn’t into gourmet cuisine? Their oddball preferences, such as jam on pickles or oatmeal with sweet and sour sauce, are just part of childhood. According to Teigen’s tweet, Luna’s no different.

The mom recently had to buy a bulk box of 2,000 ketchup packets for her daughter to dip cucumbers into. Teigen started the Twitter thread by writing, “I’ve been looking up good lunches to put in my kid’s bento lunch box and while everyone’s lunches look cute, my kid will never eat this sh** without me bribing, in person.”

If that sounds like your fam, then the rest of Teigen’s tweet is probably pretty relatable too, “Everyone’s stuffed olive tapenade pita cat faces can suck it. Say hello to pizza bagel.”

Of course Luna isn’t the only preschooler who is totally into her own food choices. One pre-k teacher replied, “I have a kid in my preschool class whose parents pack him a container of ketchup for dipping that he just drinks, as a lunch appetizer of sorts.”

Do You Need Help Reducing Your Kiddo’s Screen Time? Hire a Coach!

If you’ve taken the kids to the pool or beach this summer, chances are you’ve spent a good amount of time trying to squeeze your kids in and out of wet bathing suits when nature calls. One-piece swimsuits for girls are especially challenging to maneuver when you need to change a diaper or hit the potty, but finally one company has come up with a genius solution and we can’t believe no one thought of this before.

Wowease Swimsuits were invented by two moms, because no one else understands the struggle quite like other parents. Unlike traditional one-piece swimsuits, these have hidden magnetic snaps at the waistband that allow for easy access for diaper changes without having to remove the entire suit.

Photo: Wowease Swimsuits

If your little ones have graduated to using the toilet, these brilliant moms have even thought ahead to the problem of the bottom flap hanging down into the toilet. The suits also feature hidden magnets in the back so that you can secure the flap while using the potty.

The suits, which also come with built-in UPF 50 sun protection, are available online in sizes to fit babies, toddlers and girls. They retail for $20 to $25, depending on the style. The only question left is, when will they make an adult version?

These Moms Tested Under Armour’s Kids Swimsuits. Here’s What They Discovered

Kids’ Bathing Suits That’ll Last Until the End of Summer

For the last decade, I battled through the trenches of the advertising industry as a copywriter. But if the world was an airport, I was a traveler at baggage claim. Every so often, I’d see a bag that looked like mine. Sometimes, I’d even pull it off the carousel. Then, I’d quickly realize that I’d made a mistake, put it back and wait for another rotation.

Or, maybe a more accurate description would be that my career was a road trip and jobs were stops on the way to an unknown destination. Some were nice; I’d think, “Wow, I could stay here.” But inevitably, the charm would wear off.  Slipping away with a cliché “It’s not you … it’s me,” I’d hop in my convertible, put on my sunglasses and drive off, watching the town disappear in the rear view mirror.

This is not to say I’ve had a reckless career. Quite the opposite. I did things by the book. Went to college. Got an internship. Then a job. Made moves. I continued climbing until—just before turning 30—I landed a senior-level position. Shortly after, there were talks of me heading up a new division with a promotion to Associate Creative Director.

So, what happened?

Well, something didn’t feel right. You see, I have a blog that evolved from hobby to side hustle over the last two years. The more my career grew, the more my blog suffered. I’d go weeks without fresh content. My audience plateaued. Work buried me, leaving no spare time. And, while I loved being a copywriter, I felt I was at a crossroads and needed to make a decision – fast. Just like that, I walked away from my career to blog full-time. That was two months ago.

Here are three hard lessons I’ve learned since then.

1. People aren’t going to get it.

Being a professional blogger is 2019’s version of “I’m going to Hollywood!” People look at you with pity. The nicer ones pretend to be supportive, even asking how they can subscribe (they mysteriously never do). I get it. Really, I do. It’s hard to understand what we don’t understand.

These reactions used to bother me, because in advertising, you go back to the drawing board when your idea falls flat with others. In the blogger world? If others don’t get it, you’re onto something new – and that is gold in an oversaturated space. So, learn to be okay with not being understood.

2. No one is looking out for you.

Listen. Once you go out on your own and the 1st and 15th of the month are no longer synonymous with pay day, you start to miss the comfort of that old paycheck. Especially when you have to follow up on past-due invoices.

As a blogger, I work 70+ hours/week. If I don’t hustle, I can’t pay my bills. Because of that, I went on a stretch where I accepted unsustainable amounts of work. Don’t do it. Establish boundaries. Say no. Set realistic deadlines. Tell companies – no matter who they are – that you’re booked. If you’re drained, you can’t represent yourself or clients well. The balance between “Rise and grind – business never sleeps!” and “Dang, girl, you need rest” is hard to find, y’all.

3. What I thought mattered, didn’t.

Bloggers know there is money to be made. Naturally, they want it. Even within my plus size blogging niche, plenty of people are going after the same collabs/audience/budgets. That reality scared me. Why would anyone choose me when other bloggers have more followers, experience and popularity within the community? Face palm.

Let’s make this clear: Numbers do not equal sales. Or ROI. And while popularity is nice, fellow bloggers are not usually your target. Stop comparing. Instead, learn who your audience is and what drives them to buy.

There is no magic number where you’ll have “made it.” At 500,000 followers, you’ll still have to work to source quality opportunities. It pays (quite literally) to be about your business. We are our brands.

To me, that means taking accountability. I can’t do, say and post whatever I want – even major bloggers who seem to do so are, for the most part, functioning within calculated parameters. A single post can land opportunities or drive them away. I might look cute wearing winter boots in May, but it’s not savvy. So, in a sense, post what you want, but be realistic about the consequences. If you post those winter boots in May, swimsuit companies might not reach out. Strategy is everything.

I joke that bloggers have to live life two months in the future—but that’s true! This week, I’m shooting swimwear. That forecasting mindset is rare. That’s how I turned blogging into an even more successful career than the one I left. Since starting my blog, I’ve been on talk shows, flown out to photo shoots, modeled e-commerce internationally and sat front row at New York Fashion Week. I’ve worked with ModCloth, Sephora, JustFab, Kroger and countless other fashion, beauty and lifest‌yle brands.

Anything can happen, but I’m confident that the same nimble attitude that made me restless in an office will help me pivot seamlessly as an entrepreneur. After years of cruising aimlessly, I feel like I’m finally driving toward a clear destination.
