Between San Francisco and Sacramento, Fairfield is an under-the-radar destination that you’ve probably driven by a hundred times and never stopped. At only about an hour and a half from San Francisco, it’s a great getaway that requires little planning. If you’re looking for a low-key weekend with the kids, Fairfield is where it’s at. From kid-friendly activities like the famous Jelly Belly Factory to delicious wines with beautiful backdrops reminiscent of Napa, you’ll want to bookmark this itinerary for a future trip. Read on for what to do, where to eat, where to sleep, and of course, family tips for all ages.

What To Do

Jelly Belly Factory

A must-see for any candy lover, the Jelly Belly Factory gives families an inside look at how all those tasty little beans are made from start to finish. The self-guided tour is relaxed and at your own pace, with video segments describing the process along the way. With lots of windows so kids of all heights can see what’s happening in the working factory and interspersed games to keep little ones active, it’s a fun tour. There is a candy shop (of course) featuring the famous Belly Flops, as well as a cafe to counter all that sugar. 

Family Tip: While the weekends are the most convenient, the factory does not run production on Saturdays and Sundays. Be sure to visit on a weekday to see it all in action. Check the website for most current hours.

Western Railway Museum

Another kid-friendly activity, the Western Railway Museum is home to some of the oldest, vintage trains and streetcars. There are over 50 cars on display and 22 miles of track, along with a shaded picnic area and cafe for snacks. Buy a ticket to the 50-minute train ride, where everyone gets to ride in a vintage car on old tracks with a conductor in full uniform. Afterward, take a tour at the exhibit, where you might get a chance to walk on board a vintage car and see the dining hall, a mock dining table setting with real China, a record player and sleeping quarters. 

Family Tip: While the train ride is great for kids, the horn is loud and can be a bit much for the little ones. Be sure to warn kids ahead of time or skip it for sensitive ears.

Tolenas Winery

If you think wine-tasting can’t be family-friendly, think again. Set in a beautiful Victorian white house surrounded by grapevines and open space in Suisun Valley, Tolenas Winery is a must-visit. Parents can sip on delicious wine like their unique white Pinot Noir on the front patio while the kiddos run around on the grass in the front lawn. The family-owned business has gone through three generations, with family at the center of it. 

Family Tip: Bring snacks for the little ones to munch on as they play. The tasting experience is really all about relaxing and enjoying the scenery. Since we bet you’ll be there a while, grab some snacks for the kids to avoid the “I’m hungry” requests.

Suisun Creek Winery

Another family-owned winery and vineyard, Suisun Creek Winery is also a must-visit with kids in tow. The large backyard tasting room is set to the backdrop of mountains, vineyards and open space. The wine is just as delicious, like the Verdelho, a sweet wine perfect on a sunny day. Family owners Brian (winemaker) and Katie, along with their three kids, are all super knowledgeable about wines and the grapes of Suisun Valley. 

Family Tip: The vineyard has a ton of open space to run and play. Be sure to bring appropriate shoes that you don’t mind getting a bit dirty. That way you can enjoy the wine while the kids play.

Larry's Produce

An expansive 1,200 acres is home to fruits, vegetables, wheat and beans at Larry’s Produce. While locals and businesses grab the amazing produce during the week, visitors are in for a treat, especially the younger set. Not only can you pick fresh produce for the road, but they have a beautiful pumpkin patch with giant, varietal and mini pumpkins. There are also a lot of family activities that are free including hayrides, a corn pit and tons of space to run and play. 

Family Tip: The stand is cash-only, so be sure to stop by an ATM before visiting!

Rush Ranch

Want a spot for the kids to run around, pick leaves, play with sticks, see cows and horses or go on a self-guided walking trail? Check out Rush Ranch on Grizzly Island Road. Purchased by Solano Land Trust in 1988, it’s now a part of the San Francisco Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. About 20 minutes from downtown, the ranch spans about 2,000 acres of marsh and rolling grasslands where kids can just be free with no agenda. 

Family Tip: Check out the events calendar on their website. The Storybook Walk is especially fun for both kids and adults- a great way to be out in nature!

Not only does Two60 Kitchen + Bar have delicious food, but the staff is super friendly, making this one a no-brainer. With standard kid menus complete with activity pages and crayons, and entrees like grilled cheese and chicken strips, little ones are set. For the parents, the drinks and wine menu are inventive and hit the spot after a day of touring. Entrees are delicious, but also note-worthy like the vanilla black pepper salad dressing or the Korean fried chicken sandwich. 

Family Tip: For meat-eaters, order the lumpia, a recipe created by Chef Joey Jaraba’s mother and made in-house that even the pickiest of eaters will enjoy.

Saffron Indian Cuisine and Bar

If in the mood for Indian food, Saffron is definitely a place to check out. While it doesn’t look like a fancy restaurant on the outside, the inside is decked out with chandeliers and plush booths and tables. The chicken tikka masala is a great choice, along with their naan bread and saffron rice. Great for date night or family dinner! 

Family Tip: Lunch is buffet style, which might be a good choice for picky eaters or if you want a bit more variety.

Pizza Twist

For a dinner that’s casual and fast without skimping on quality, a popular place to eat is Pizza Twist. Here you can get the standard Chicago-style cheese or pepperoni pizza, but the twist lies in their specialty Indian-inspired pies. Order halal chicken, paneer or spicy lamb kabob. It’s also diet-friendly with vegan, keto, gluten-free and vegetarian options available. 

Family Tip: Order for take-out or delivery if the kiddos are tired after a long day and make it a movie and pizza night at the hotel.

What to order at an Indian Restaurant for Kids: It’s hard to go wrong with fluffy and buttery bread, so always order naan. If your kids like chicken tenders or fish sticks, order chicken or fish pakora. Pakora means battered and deep fried…yum! Anything cooked in a tandoor, a special Indian clay oven, is a good choice, too. 

Our choice for Indian? Tandoor-A-India in Playa Del Rey. They consistently serve flavorful curries and the kids always devour their chicken tikka. It’s dinner time and if you had to choose between ordering a pizza or cooking a healthy meal, a pizza probably sounds a whole lot easier. And while you know you need to prioritize the health of your family you are probably overwhelmed and need easy ideas—our life is complicated and enough and you have zero aspirations to become Martha Stewart.

Whether you don’t particularly have a flair or interest in cooking, don’t have the time, or just don’t have the money to get extravagant with your meals there are tips here that will positively impact your household. 

1. Pre-cooked Meat (Pre-cooked Grocery Store Rotisserie Chicken vs. Home-Cooked Oven Roasters)
Save time by opting for pre-cooked rotisserie chickens which can run as low as $4.99 at major grocery store chains. This saves time and provides a substantial part of a healthy lunch or dinner that is already cooked freeing your time and energy to focus on simple sides. 

2. Slow Cooking (Crock-Pot Meals vs. Skillet Meals)
While skillet st‌yle meals are a great way to whip up a healthy meal for one or two people, it can be far more efficient to prepare family-friendly meals in a slow cooker as it creates tender juicy meats without added oils and sugars. Recipes like cilantro lime chicken, chili, carnitas, curry, chicken tikka masala, soups, and so much more become one single step that you can set and forget!

3. Smoothies (Meal Replacer Shakes vs. Home-Cooked Sit-Down Breakfasts) 
When everyone is hungry and you are short on time, don’t underestimate protein smoothies for breakfast. Start with a base of a good quality protein supplement and blend it with almond or coconut milk, fresh low sugar fruit, leafy greens (optional), and a nut butter like almond or peanut butter. This approach will not only be delicious but will save time, money, and leave you with fewer dishes to wash!

4. Choose Fruit Wisely (Ready to Eat Fruit vs. Prep Intensive Fruit)
Fresh fruit is a great way to get fiber and nutrients for your family, however, you can save yourself a lot of time by choosing fruit more strategically. Things like whole apples and pears only need to be rinsed and can be consumed as-is. This also goes for bananas where the fruit can be eaten without prep work. Set a bowl of fresh ready-to-eat fruit in your kitchen for easily accessible snacks as opposed to tasking yourself with preparing more intensive fruit like cantaloupe, watermelon, or pineapple. 

5. Don’t Bother Peeling Produce
Sweet potatoes, potatoes, carrots, apples, and beets all roast up amazing with the skin on. The same goes for cucumbers, kiwi, eggplant, grapes, peaches, nectarines, ginger, acorn squash, and delicate squash. Leaving the skin includes more antioxidants and nutrients. Just make sure you rinse your produce first!

6. Egg Whites
Purchase cartons of liquid egg whites as opposed to whole eggs. For recipes that call for egg whites, you will experience fewer “steps” by pouring liquid egg whites as opposed to cracking several eggs, separating the yolks from the whites. This is great for egg white omelets 

7. Break Your Breakfast Routine
Don’t be afraid to have leftover “dinner food” for an easy microwavable breakfast. Breakfast doesn’t have to be “conventional.” I’ve grown up having rice and eggs or some other form of protein my entire life. There is no rule that says breakfast needs to be pancakes and cereal, it can be whatever you want it to be.

8. Order Chinese Take-Out
What? Takeout? Yes, when I’m in a bind, I will order a few servings of steamed chicken and mixed vegetables with white or brown rice. You can also get steamed shrimp and a variety of different veggies (all you have to do is ask and you can get broccoli). You can get this meal at ANY Chinese restaurant in America, just ask for the sauce on the side (I don’t use the sauce). I add a small amount of soy sauce or coconut aminos to flavor the food along with either sriracha or hot oil sauce. However, this has gotten me through rough spots where I had a lot of work and zero time to cook, but needed healthy food to keep me energized.

9. No-Chop Veggies
When selecting your veggies, some will be easier to meal prep than others required virtually no chopping or prepping before cooking.
▪ Spinach/Kale/Arugula: Can be easily steamed or sauteed with the carb of your choice (i.e. rice or sweet potatoes), can be added to wraps, salads, omelets, tacos, fajitas, and sandwiches. 
▪ String beans/Asparagus: Can be easily steamed, oven-roasted, or lightly sauteed.
▪ Peas/Snow Peas: An easy add-in to a stir-fry or skillet when simple veggies are needed to complete a meal.

10. Have a “Back-Up” Healthy Meal
Every household needs a go-to backup meal. For me, it’s veggie fried rice. I typically scramble in egg whites for my protein source and whatever veggies I have on hand. It tastes amazing and I literally always have the ingredients needed to pull it off at any point. It can get fancier depending on what type of meat you have on hand and it great for turning leftover rice, meat, eggs, and veggies into an amazing family-friendly dish.

Cookbook author and journalist Anupy Singla wears many hats. She’s also the mom of two girls.

Tai Kojro-Badziak is a partner with zpd+a, a Chicago-based architecture firm with projects nationwide. “We focus on adaptive reuse, mixed-use/ multi-family new construction, hospitality, senior housing and some residential,” explained Kojro-Badziak. “We were aggressively expanding and considering hiring up to three new people at the beginning of March. . . and then everything was upended. I was watching the spread of COVID-19 since early January, and in early March we rapidly transitioned to a work-from-home scenario for our entire team a week before the official shelter-in-place orders. We have a home studio space that is now my architecture firm and a kindergarten classroom!

Running an architecture firm from home while simultaneously homeschooling isn’t for the faint of heart. “My secret to getting anything done is to write a list of targets for the day and the week, and focus on just a few each day. That happens on many levels, since we are managing the staff remotely, and that also includes everyone's energy and emotions. We make sure to have some laughs: a weekly office competition and happy hour chat for work, and long runs and bike rides for our family. And my husband and I make sure to take deep breaths, give each other and our 6-year-old the space to feel all the feels these days. No doubt, it's hard! But good communication, making art, taking hot baths, and wine are helping me through!”

Many families have been relying on takeout now more than ever. DoorDash just unveiled the DoorDash Deep Dish report. This report delves into the top takeout and cooking trends to date as we make our way past the halfway point of the year.

Using order data from Jan. 1, 2020 to Jun. 30, 2020 and a national consumer survey, DoorDash’s mid-year report checks in on popular food trends, nationally and regionally, how users ate through social distancing, cravings across the country, and more. The national consumer survey polled 2,000 Americans on what they cooked, ate, and baked the most, the top food and drink they missed while restaurants were closed, the impact the past six months have had on vacation plans and more.

DoorDash’s survey found that more time spent cooking is tiring people out. 70% of those surveyed said they are spending more time in the kitchen and 47% report that they are tired of cooking. 25% will order more food when they get takeout so that they will have leftovers for the next day.

Almost half of respondents are most tired of cooking chicken, followed by pasta and microwave meals. While tired of cooking chicken, Americans aren’t sick of ordering in chicken. Chicken Sandwich with french fries was the top food item ordered on DoorDash this year, with Chicken Fajitas also making the list as the 8th most ordered item.

While our Instagram feeds were flooded with pictures of banana bread, cookies are filling cravings for comfort food with 60% of those surveyed saying they baked chocolate chip cookies during the pandemic. Cookies also surged in order frequency, with Skillet Chocolate Chip Cookies seeing a 1,193% increase in orders compared to the first half of 2019.

People missing eating out, especially Mexican food and margaritas, and sushi. Americans made up for missing eating Mexican and Seafood out by ordering these cuisines in–the top items ordered this year on DoorDash include Spicy Shrimp Tacos (3rd most ordered item), California Roll (6th most ordered), Breakfast Burritos (7th most ordered), Chicken Fajitas (8th most ordered), Spicy Tuna Roll (9th most ordered) and Fish & Chips (10th most ordered). Top trending Mexican items ordered on DoorDash include Queso Blanco (1,735% increase), Grilled Chicken Tacos (1,502% increase), Cheese Nachos (1,130% increase), Shrimp Tacos (997% increase), and Chicken Fajitas (318% increase).

The west coast disagrees: their top response is sushi, edging Mexican food 36% to 34%. Top DoorDash orders from West Coasters support this, with Sushi and Seafood being the dominant items ordered in LA and Seattle, respectively, and West Coast top dinner items including Spicy Tuna Rolls and Dragon Rolls

The pandemic has caused food habits to change. Of those surveyed, 45% have tried at least one of three select new food habits. Intermittent fasting is especially popular with older millennials (25-34-year-olds) as 40% say they’ve tried it. Plant based eating is also on the rise. 18-24 year olds ranked plant-based as the most appetizing vegan dish and DoorDash orders for Plant-based Burgers surged 443% increase in 2020.

The largest amount spent on a single DoorDash food order this year was an order worth $2,578 that included 70 orders of Mediterranean herb chicken, 40 orders of grilled vegetables, and 20 cheese plates.

Get ready to hit the grocery aisles! Trader Joe’s recently announced the winners for the store’s 11th Annual Customer Choice Awards—and these are the product picks shoppers adore.

What’s the number one overall customer favorite? It’s probably no surprise that Everything But the Bagel Sesame Seasoning Blend won top honors. While customers picked the seasoning shaker as the best of the best, they also chose Cauliflower Gnocchi, Mandarin Orange Chicken, Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups and Unexpected Cheddar as the runners-up.

Even though the Mandarin Orange Chicken was a runner-up in the overall fave category, it took the number one place as favorite entree item. The runners-up in this category include Cauliflower Gnocchi, Chicken Tikka Masala, Butter Chicken and Sweet Potato Gnocchi with Butter and Sage.

Cauliflower Gnocchi took the top spot in the favorite vegan/vegetarian item category, followed by Soy Chorizo, Vegan Kale, Cashew and Basil Pesto, Cowboy Quinoa Veggie Burger and Chicken-less Mandarin Orange Morsels.

If you’re into sweet treats, this year’s winner is Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups. The runners-up in this category include Hold the Cone! Mini Vanilla Ice Cream Cones, O&H Danish Kringle, Sublime Ice Cream Sandwiches and Gone Bananas! Dark Chocolate Covered Bananas.

Snack-lovers picked Plantain Chips as their top item, followed by Peanut Butter Filled Pretzels, World’s Puffiest White Cheddar Corn Puffs, Organic Elote Corn Chip Dippers and Chili and Lime Rolled Corn Tortilla Chips.

Non-Dairy Oat Beverage now holds the number one spot as favorite beverage. The runners-up include Honeycrisp Apple Cider, Triple Ginger Brew, Spiced Cider and Charles Shaw Wine.

When it comes to produce, everyone loves avocados. The other faves include bananas, Honeycrisp apples, brussels sprouts and shaved brussels sprouts.

In the favorite cheese category Unexpected Cheddar was the clear winner, followed by English Cheddar with Caramelized Onions, Creamy Toscano Soaked in Syrah, Wild Blueberry and Vanilla Chevre and Cranberry Chevre.

Along with foods, fans also picked the best of home, bath and beauty. Scented candles were number one in this category and the runners-up include Rose Water Facial Toner, Coconut Body Butter, Shea Butter and Coconut Oil Hair mask and Ultra Hydrating Gel Moisturizer.
