Christkindlmarket — Chicago’s take on a traditional German Christmas market—is back with locations in the Loop and Wrigleyville. Should you take the kids? Ja!  Shop, eat, enjoy free entertainment, shop some more, and even say “guten tag” to Santa Claus. Read on for the highlights and a few tips on what to do while you’re in the area.

When and Where?

Taking place Nov. 19-Dec. 24 at Daley Plaza and Nov. 19-Dec. 31 at Wrigleyville's Gallagher Way, you'll see the market's signature wooden cabins topped with festive red-and-white-striped canopies. Inspired by the real deal in Nuremburg, each cabin is packed with handmade gifts, food and drinks from around the world and many are run by native German speakers. The market is outdoors and we all know how cold our fair city can get, so bundle up and spend your time there wisely.

Meet a Real-Life Fairy

The market's ethereal, angelic mascot is a crowned fairy with gold and white robes. Called "The Christkind," she's rooted in folklore that dates back to the 1500s, when a "grand angel" led holiday parades in Germany. The Christkind is thought to be the gift bearer in most German-speaking countries (much like Santa Claus is here). This year, she will make virtual appearances during the Christkind Story Time, every Sun., Nov.20-Dec. 24, 2 p.m.

Highlights at the Daley Location

Frank's Ornament House
You'll find sentimental gifts for everybody on your list. Nested in baskets are thousands of glass ornaments, organized by theme, shape and color. Look for those related to your kids' interests (there's everything from soccer balls to pianos) or pick up glittery starts, orbs and diamonds.

Santa's House
Santa's abode comes to the market courtesy of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events for the City of Chicago and sits next to the City's official Christmas tree. You have to stand outside in line to see the big guy in red, but it's worth the wait for a one-on-one meeting. Snap photos, dish what's on your list, and savor the "ho, ho, ho."

Food, Food & More Food
There are nearly 20 food and drink stands at the Daley location — most run by German vendors who came from as far as Tuttlingen and Stuttgart. Go for the warming delights, like schnitzel, potato pancakes and goulash soup. For a Chicago tradition, stop for stollen (a traditional German holiday cake) from Dinkel's Bakery. Don't forget hot spiced cider and hot chocolate, available at numerous cabins as well as inside the Grand Timber House next to the stage, which has seats and tables if you want to cozy up for a while.

Best Shopping Picks
Hand-poured candles made from German honey. Wooden cuckoo clocks crafted in the Black Forest. Mouth-blown glass vases from Poland. Stoneware beer steins as big as your head. Every cabin at Christkindlmarket is filled with charms and it's tough to play favorites. But if you have kids to entertain, there are some obvious stops. Go to Toy Wonderland for wooden toys and games from Dresden, Germany; and Gifts from Eastern Europe to eye up Russian nesting dolls and papier-mâché laquer boxes. Kids also love wooden nutcrackers from Hoffmann Company from Dresden. Our favorite is Der Lindwurm & Wyvern's Liar from Altenhain, Germany, which displays intricate wood-carved animals, dragons and fairytale creatures.

Highlights at the Gallagher Way Location

Tree Lighting Ceremony
Gallagher Way will host a tree lighting ceremony to kickoff the holiday season as part of their Winterland festivities. The ceremony will include special guests, a musical performance, festive decor and the opportunity to shop, skate and enjoy concessions, Nov. 29.

While You're in the Loop

Ice skating at Maggie Daley offers sweet views of the city and ice skating at Millennium Park happens daily in front of "The Bean". Millennium Park even offers free ice skating lessons on Saturdays and Sundays.

Stop in to chat with Santa and the holiday window displays that Macy's State Street is known for.

If you're feeling ambitious, turn your trip to Christkindlmarket into a staycation. Book the Elf Decorated Room at Swissôtel Chicago and enjoy a cozy, festive space. Upgrade the experience to include toys, books and games to enjoy while in the comfort of your room.

While You're in Wrigleyville

Besides Christkindlmarket, Gallagher Way will be decked out with holiday flare bigger and brighter than ever before during this year’s Winterland. Celebrate the holidays by taking part in the many Winterland programs happening Nov. 19-Feb. 20, including a Festival of Lights celebration, ice skating, curling, ice bumper cars and skating lessons, Santa’s Workshop, wreath-making classes, outdoor holiday movies and much more.

Join Lincoln Park Zoo for their annual celebration of ZooLights at Lincoln Park Zoo. This one-of-a-kind, festive holiday experience offers a free, merry, family-oriented celebration of joy right in the heart of the city, Nov. 19-Jan. 2.

Across the street from Wrigley Field you'll find Lucky Strike Social with bowling, video games, ping pong, pool tables, air hockey, board games and a very addictive game of basketball Connect Four.  It's a great spot to warm up, play some games and grab a bite to eat.

Helpful Tips

  • If possible, visit the markets on weekdays when it tends to be less crowded.
  • Some booths are cash only, so be sure to make a stop at an ATM on the way.
  • Reserve discounted parking before you ever leave the house by using spothero.com. Or, check the parking deals section for both the Loop and Wrigleyville for more discounted options.
  • Print the Christkindlmarket scavenger hunt to keep the kids entertained and engaged throughout the market.
  • Special events, kids days and more will be hosted regularly, so be sure to check out both the Chicago and Wrigleyville calendars.
  • If you have a child that is wheelchair-bound, everything at the market is wheelchair accessible.

Both VTech and LeapFrog will be dropping a combined seven new eco-friendly products this year. In addition to green alternatives for toy construction, VTech packaging currently is made up of 94 percent recyclable materials and the company is committed to getting rid of fossil-based blister packaging by 2025.

Kids will soon be able to play with three new vehicles in the Go! Go! Smart Wheels line made from plant-based plastic, and the Sort & Recycle Ride-on Truck made from reclaimed plastic. Looking for LeapFrog products? Keep your eyes peeled for a new Choppin’ Fun Learning Pot with vegetables and accessories made from plant-based plastic, and two new wooden toys that include a Touch & Learn Nature ABC Board and Interactive Wooden Animal Puzzle.

Dr. Allan Wong, Chairman and Group CEO of VTech Holdings Limited states, “VTech’s sustainability vision is to create sustainable value for the lives of people and protect the planet for the future generations. We are committed to using sustainable materials in our products and packaging and recycling them in a responsible way, using eco-friendly transportation modes in our supply chain management, increasing the use of renewable energy and reducing the consumption of natural resources in our production process.”

So how else is VTech changing the toy landscape? The company is taking part in post-consumer packaging recycling programs in the US, UK, Australia and New Zealand, included packaging recycling labels like “How2Recycle®” its packaging to promote awareness and has partnered with recycling companies like TerraCycle® as an easy avenue for consumers to recycle products.

These New 80s & 90s Inspired Toys Will Have You Reliving Your Childhood

Traditional baby and toddler toys boost brain-building, hands-on exploration and are durable so younger siblings can play with them, too. Our favorite non-electronic baby and toddler toys come without batteries and ear-splitting beeps. Little ones learn through play, so a few carefully chosen toys in the toy bin will give your baby a chance to have fun as a tiny scientist, artist, and motor-skill champ. Here are a few of our favorite non-electronic toys for babies and toddlers.

Ronald Hechanova via Unsplash

1. Rattles
A good rattle is sized just right for babies working on tricky hand-eye coordination and learning how to pick things up. This classic toy doesn't look like much, but as babies grasp, shake and even slobber on it, they're learning about the world. Rattles reward curious little ones learning about cause and effect with a satisfying sound as it shakes. Choose a rattle you can easily clean, and make sure it's designed for babies to safely put it in their mouthsbecause it's sure to end up there!

2. Stacking Cups
Stack them in a tower, tip them over, put them inside one another, and then turn them into a home for a plastic cow. Stacking cups offer lots of interactive opportunities for fun and play. Most sets of stacking cups come in bright colors, giving little ones a chance to learn about colors. Balancing cups in a tower shape builds problem-solving skills, self-control and persistence. Another colorful stacking option is Grimms Rainbow, an all-wooden toy that's so beautiful you won't mind having it out on a shelf.

3. Sensory Bins
Toddlers learn about the world through hands-on activities and observation. Sensory bins or tables are a great way to give little ones a chance to explore. You can easily replicate this key preschool tool by filling a plastic bin with dry oats or water and adding measuring cups and scoops. If you're worried about the mess that scooping up water or dry oats can make, put a towel underneath your kiddo and the bin. If the weather is nice, put the bin outside to minimize clean-up, or purchase a water table or sandbox for more sensory fun. If you'd like to take your sensory-bin game to the next level, hide plastic animals or cars for kids to find, or dye rice or dry pasta for rainbow-colored play. Bonus: Sensory bins give curious kids a chance to learn about volume (how much water fits in a scoop?) and boosts imaginative play and language development.

4. Push-Pull Toys
From Fisher Price's classic, affordable plastic corn popper to a wooden animal on a string, push-and-pull toys are beloved by budding walkers everywhere. These toys encourage balance and gross motor skill development, and they make perfect buddies for toddlers as they stumble and zoom through your home. We love this Little Dutch Walker & Block Trolley from Scandiborn ($59.95, pictured above), as it combines two beloved non-electronic toys in one.

5. Classic Blocks
Your kiddo will play with a set of durable wooden blocks for years and years. With blocks, little ones get a chance to work on problem solving as they figure out how to stack blocks on top of one another or organize them in a row. Eventually, blocks become a blank canvas for imaginative play, as kids turn their creations into castles, houses and zoos. Talking about block creations builds language and conversation skills, and, with a big set of blocks at the ready, older toddlers can work together and learn about cooperation.

6. Dolls & Stuffed Animals
Whether you're looking for a lovey for comfort or a toy your child can practice caring for and rocking to sleep, soft dolls and stuffed animals are a great addition to any baby's toy collection. Playing with dolls helps little ones learn about empathy and feelings. Pro tip: Choose those without plastic eyes that can be a choking hazard!

Jelleke Vanooteghem via Unsplash

7. Music Makers
One of the benefits of non-electronic toys for parents: fewer ear-splitting sounds. But sometimes a baby has just got to make music. Whether you break out your pots and pans and a wooden spoon or give your child a toy drum and a few egg shakers, toys that let kids make their own music are always a hit. Sturdy music-making options without batteries are more likely to last from kid to kid, and they give children the chance to be more creative. We like wooden xylophones like this one from Melissa & Doug because of their bright colors and the variety of sounds they make.

8. Balls
Roll it, throw it, catch it! Balls are awesome for boosting motor skills and hand-eye coordination. But they're also a great way to introduce little ones to the back-and-forth interaction and taking turns, which is one of the building blocks of conversation. Rolling a ball gives grown-ups the chance to connect and make eye contact with babies and toddlers, and it boosts language development. From soft balls with jingly bells inside to bumpy plastic balls just the right size for chubby little hands, toy stores are full of options perfect for babies and toddlers.

9. Bubbles
Bubbles mesmerize babies and toddlers (and many parents) as they float through the sky. Whether you make bubbles at home (we like this DIY option) and blow them outside to delight your kiddo, or pick up a bubble-making lawn mower, bubbles are a surefire hit with little ones. We like to keep a few jars of bubbles at the ready to distract cranky little ones.

10. Ride-On Toys
A good ride-on toy gives toddlers hours of indoor gross-motor fun. These toys develop balance and give little legs a workout. One of the best first-birthday gifts, our fave ride-on toys come with a basket or bin that little ones can use to give their favorite toy or stuffed animal a ride around the house, promoting imaginative play, too! We love the sturdy Little Red Rider Wooden Kid's Ride-on Bike from Hape.

Busy boxes more than live up to their name. With a little prep work, you can captivate babies and toddlers and keep them playing independently while you relax, make dinner, do laundry or straighten up the living room. Here are 10 ideas for sensory boxes to keep your baby busy. From easy to crafty, there’s something for everyone.

Build Your Box

Busy Toddler

Back away from Pinterest. Busy boxes don't have to be fancy or follow a theme. Just plop some interesting and baby-safe items in a box, and let baby explore, like with this random collection of goodies from Busy Toddler

Choose an Interesting Assortment

The Imagination Tree

Anna from The Imagination Tree recommends finding items with different textures, materials, shapes and sounds to keep baby absorbed as long as possible, while promoting independent play.

Cloth Napkin Sensory Bin

The Stay-at-Home-Mom Survival Guide

Even the littlest babes can enjoy busy boxes. This one from The Stay-at-Home-Mom Survival Guide uses cloth napkins, but you can substitute burp cloths. Babies can pull, touch, gnaw on and see all the different colors of fabric.

Fabric Fun for Older Babies

Hands on As We Grow

Add a new challenge to your bits of fabric by tying on small rattles or toys for baby to discover. Jamie from Hands on as We Grow recommends this as well as placing the fabric inside an old wipes box (recycling win!). Hiding the fabric pieces in the box adds an element of surprise and makes for fascinating pull-it-out and stuff-it-in play.

Group Objects by Theme

Jarful of Plenty

Rebecca from Jarful of Plenty likes to use themes like wooden toys, kitchen or musical instruments. Rotate your boxes or toy bins regularly to give your baby new stimulation.

Incorporate Beads

Lemon Lime Adventures

Dayna from Lemon Lime Adventures has a bunch of busy-box ideas on her site, like this one with beads. (Watch your little one carefully with this activity, especially if they're the type to put everything around their necks or in their mouths.) Babies can pull, feel and experience these long chains of beads. Teething necklaces work great for this activity. If you use costume jewelry, make sure the thread is secure so beads don't separate and cause a choking hazard.

Sort by Color

The OT Toolbox

Even before toddlers know their colors, they can start recognizing, sorting or just enjoying playing with colored objects. The OT Toolbox shows you how to make these color-sorting busy bags. They're fun for babies and will grow with your child as he/she gains more dexterity.

Their Very Own Handbag

Leisarà via Unsplash

Most little kids love to dig into Mommy's purse. To avoid having your keys and credit cards go missing, give your child their very own purse (one of your old ones or a thrift-store find works fine). Fill it with baby-safe treasures like expired credit cards, a small mirror, anything you don't mind your child playing with that isn't a choking hazard.

Try Magnets with Older Babies

Sisters, What

Here's another activity requiring more adult supervision.  Place a few magnets in an inexpensive metal pan or use a metal box like a lunch box (the lunch box makes it easy to bring this with you places). Magnets can be dangerous if ingested, so don't leave baby alone with anything containing magnets. You'll want to stick around anyway to watch your little one learn about how magnets work. This clever idea comes courtesy of Sisters, What!

Felt Ice Cream Sundaes!

Teach Me Mommy

We can't get over the cuteness of these felt busy boxes from Nadia at Teach Me Mommy. Kids can create an ice cream sundae using simple felt pieces that anyone can craft with confidence. Head to Teach Me Mommy. for the instructions.
