It’s been a few years since we’ve been graced with Rebel Wilson’s presence but she’s back and in real 2000’s glory. After months of waiting, her newest film, Senior Year is almost here!
The Netflix original flick is set to drop on May 13 and follows Stephanie Conway and her fabulous life. The high school senior has it all: she’s Cheer Captain, is beautiful and has a hot boyfriend. Until she doesn’t. When a cheer stunt goes wrong, Stephanie ends up in a coma––for 20 years! When she wakes up, she’s no longer the queen bee she once, but a middle-aged woman she doesn’t even recognize.
For those of us who navigated high school in the 90’s and 2000’s, the film is a flashback to our glory days (or maybe a sour reminder of the terrible fashion we somehow thought was cool). From the baby doll tees to the Volkswagon Rabbit, the film misses no detail when it comes to recreating our high school experience.
Now that she’s awake, however, Stephanie wants to finish what she started. “Everyone else just got to go on and live their lives and I’m supposed to just jump forward?” she says. But that’s easier said than done. “I want to go back to school and finish my senior year…High school was just like yesterday for me. It will not be weird at all.”
The film simultaneously pokes fun at some of the traditions that have thankfully fallen by the wayside (i.e. how to be popular and working at Abercrombie) while showing how far we’ve come when it comes to inclusivity. At the same time, Stephanie learns the duality of social media and of course, learning how to contour.
At its core, the film is a journey that Stephanie must navigate as she gains the confidence to just be her real self. Senior Year debuts on May 13 only on Netflix and also stars Justin Hartley, Alicia Silverstone, Angourie Rice, Sam Richardson, Chris Parnell and Mary Holland.
