Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel
A trip to the Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel will help even the grouchiest Grinches get into the holiday spirit. Not only will the hotel update its awnings from a yellow and white color to green and red, this year, the lobby decorations will be over-the-top! The hotel's in-house floral team, Square Root Designs, was inspired by a classic Christmas theme for this year’s festive installation, which features live Christmas trees, glittering lights with red and gold garlands, holiday florals, oversized Christmas ornaments and welcoming Nutcracker statues. An added bonus? The Beverly Hills High School Choir will perform carolers on Nov. 18th and Dec. 18th in the evening to get guests into the festive spirit.
The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa welcomes the holiday season with its six-week-long Annual Festival of Lights celebration, featuring one of the nation's most adored light displays that will wow both children and parents alike. Though the lights are the main attraction here, the experience is enhanced by “Dickens carolers, appearances by Santa, the world’s largest man-made mistletoe, horse-drawn carriage rides, freshly fallen snow, elaborately decorated Christmas trees; and delectable holiday confections at the famous Casey’s Cupcakes.”
Outside the hotel, the North Pole walkway will take you down the main pedestrian thoroughfare, lined with Santa’s elves filling his sleigh full of toys, a life-size gingerbread house, window displays, and more. Visitors have numerous opportunities to spend time with Santa, including breakfasts accompanied by a performance from the Inland Pacific Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker, and champagne brunches on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas.
Throughout rest of the resort’s holiday season, you can take horse-drawn carriage rides, check out the live reindeer milling around the grounds, or snap a couples selfie under the world’s largest man-made mistletoe. The Mission Inn feels so much like Christmas, we wouldn’t be surprised if this were Santa’s secret hideaway!
During the holidays, this world-renowned Palm Springs resort transforms into a quaint Christmas village, very much like the famous town of Bedford Falls (from the movie It's a Wonderful Life that was written on these very grounds by Frank Capa). Everything is adorned with twinkling lights and festive scenery. No matter where you find yourself in the resort, it feels, smells and looks so much like Christmas, you'll almost forget you're in the desert. From the spectacular tree to the aroma of roasting chestnuts in the lobby, the holiday spirit here is palpable.
L’Ermitage will transform their lobby into a winter wonderland—courtesy of Love Actually's Emmy award-winning set designer Matthew Steinbrenner. And if that's not enough for Love Actually fans, you can book an exclusive Love Actually Live package from now through the end of Dec. with the hotel that includes two tickets to the show, travel to and from the theater, a signed playbill and eggnog truffles.

Award-winning wine. Check. Gorgeous scenery. Check. Awesome family activities. Check. When it comes to a memorable getaway that offers something for your whole crew, Paso Robles checks all the boxes. This charming Central California Coast town is the perfect spot to unwind amidst rolling hills, beautiful sights, and wineries galore. Here are ten reasons Paso Robles is great for a family getaway:
It’s an Easy Road Trip between SF and LA
Whether you live in Southern or Northern California, Paso Robles is a road trip worth taking. It’s almost exactly between Los Angeles and San Francisco, and just half an hour from the Pacific Ocean. No matter which direction you’re coming from, it’s a wine country adventure that’s easy to get to by car.
And Speaking of Wine Country…
This down-to-earth town is the kind of place your kids will love, just as much as you love sipping delicious vino. With over 300 wineries, there’s no shortage of wineries that welcome kiddos of all ages to play cornhole, color, enjoy “grape juice tastings,” crush their parents at bocce ball, explore caves, frolic in nature and more. There are breweries and distilleries, too. Wine enthusiasts… this town is for you.
There Are a Variety of Places to Stay
No matter your lodging style or budget, there’s a place that’s just right for every family in Paso Robles. From boutique hotels to RV resorts to private chateaus, every setting brings a unique vibe to your vacation. Stay downtown for walking access to restaurants, shops, and more. Cava Robles’ luxury RV resort is known for spacious and private full hookup RV sites or fully furnished chalets for a “glamping” vibe. There are pools, a kid splash pad, on-site wine tastings and a wellness center at this pet-friendly gem. If you’d rather stay in town, try Hotel Cheval for sophisticated quarters and some extra special treats like a candy bar in the library and an extensive s’mores menu (yep, a s’mores menu!). Another great spot to feel right at home is at the family-owned Adelaide Inn, full of special touches. Kids will love the outdoor pool, micro golf and complimentary homemade cookies!
Snag your tickets to Light at Sensorio, a solar-powered walk-through installation by artist Bruce Munro. Field of Light spans 15 acres and features 60,000 illuminated glass orbs lit by fiber-optics. And his newest exhibit, Light Towers is composed of 6-foot-tall towers including 17,000 wine bottles to celebrate Paso Robles’ wine country. Colors morph to music, creating a breathtaking experience for all. Come after dark and stroll through the glowing landscape. Thursday is Family Night, and children’s tickets (12 and under) are half price.
You Can See the Sights on Horseback
Whether you’re a first-time rider or an experienced equestrian, Central Coast Trailrides has a horse for any skill level. A one-of-a-kind adventure for families, where kids big enough get to handle their own horse and explore the Central Coast’s scenic areas. Head down lush trails, take in gorgeous views and saddle up for some fun.
Cool Off at the Ravine
This waterpark is a family favorite thanks to the wave pool, Kickback Kreek lazy river, extreme water slides and “Tadpool” kiddie pool. Rent a cabana as your home base for the day, complete with lounge chairs, a dining table and food and drink service. Live bands perform on most summer Saturdays. And you can enjoy adult beverages at the Tiki Bar and Grill. Thrill-seekers: be sure to check out the park’s newest slide, the Sidewinder.
Get your corn dog and carnival fix… Paso Robles is home to the annual California Mid-State Fair, which runs July 21-August 1st. Kids (and kids at heart!) love the rides, livestock, musical performances and cotton candy.
Everyone Feels at Home for the Holidays
Family-friendly events are always fun in this idyllic, historic town. During Halloween, visit a charming pumpkin patch, hop on a hayride, get lost in a corn maze and go trick-or-treating while enjoying food and music downtown. Great restaurants host fantastic Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. And all throughout town, parades, festive parties and light shows bring delightful holiday cheer.
You Can Go Where the Wild Things Are
Book an all-access tour at Conservation Ambassadors’ Zoo to You (they’re not open to the public!). From lemurs to kangaroos, otters to bald eagles, you’ll learn all about rescue animals from all over the globe. Known as “animal ambassadors,” the wild/exotic residents here were once displaced, abused, injured or abandoned. Kids can learn all about what it takes to provide them with a loving, safe home!
Get Your Wiggles Out… Outside
Hiking, biking, ziplining, golfing, playing at Uptown Family park, visiting North Central Coast State beaches, marveling at wildflower super blooms on the hillside… no matter what you do, there is breathtaking beauty at every turn in Paso Robles!
It’s always the perfect time of year to head south where the sun is out, the waves are calling your name and there’s an adventure around every corner. California’s central coast is only a three hour drive from the Bay Area. Follow the iconic Highway 1 Discovery Route and you’ll find quirky small towns with a relaxed pace ready to welcome you. Read on for all our recs!
Avila Beach
Just north of Pismo Beach is the beach town of Avila Beach. Downtown has tons of restaurant options but if you drive just a short distance to the Harford Pier you can eat right on the water. MERSEA’s Restaurant offers a great kids’ menu and an awesome crab melt sandwich served with avocado on sourdough bread. Pick a table outside and the kids can watch the resident seals as they play in the water. You can also buy fresh fish and other seafood at the end of the pier if you want to cook something up yourself.
Avila Beach Adventures
With miles of coastline and tons of trails to explore, Avila Beach is the perfect spot to get on two wheels and head out! Pedego Electric Bikes is located right on the main drag and is ready to outfit the whole family with electric bikes. They offer kids’ bikes, adult bikes and the “stretch” that can carry an adult with two kids in back. Rent by the hour or by the day, you’ll love the extra boost that the electric bike gives to keep your journey going.
Ride on the Bob Jones Trail from downtown Avila Beach and you’ll meander through a wooded area with lots of spots to stop and play on playground equipment and grassy areas. Grab some lunch provisions to eat on the patio at Woodstone Marketplace and then continue on to the Avila Valley Barn. Kids will love visiting with all of the farm animals and taking a tractor ride around the property.
After your bike adventure, book some time to soak in the rejuvenating water at Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort and Spa. The property has 23 private, open-air hot tubs on the hillside just waiting to offer you some relaxation time. The hot tubs rent by the hour ($15/person Mon.-Thurs. and $20/person Fri.-Sun.) for groups of 2-6 people. Larger groups or families looking for more area to spread out should book the Oasis Waterfall Lagoon ($20/person). Up to 20 people can enjoy this quiet spot that has two waterfalls pouring into the naturally-heated mineral spring water. Families can also stay the night at Sycamore Mineral Springs to enjoy in-room hot tubs and other spa amenities.
Another great spot for families to stay in Avila Bead is the Avila Lighthouse Suites, where their many villas and suites offer ample room for families to spread out. When you are not exploring Avila Beach’s sand and pier, you can take a dip in the hotel’s pool or play a game of giant checkers on the deck. Bonus: continental breakfast is included with your stay.
Pismo Beach
Another great spot to make your home base is Pismo Beach. Located right off highway 101 on the coast, Pismo offers an iconic California beach that’s perfect for a weekend on the sand. Right next to the brand-new Pismo Pier you can find a swing set right in the sand! And just a little farther south down the beach you’ll find an even bigger playground, also right on the beach. Public bathrooms and snacks are on the boardwalk right near the pier.
Explore Pismo in style! A number of companies rent surreys, double surreys and bikes for the whole family. The double surrey can fit up to four peddling adults and four riding kids. All rentals come with helmets. This is a great activity to try in the early morning hours before the marine layer burns off and the sun comes out.
Where to Eat in Pismo Beach
The long lines at the Splash Cafe might clue you in that it is one of the most popular spots to grab a bite to eat in town. Crowds line up around the corner for the opportunity to try their award-winning clam chowder. Avoid the line and order your meal to-go or even grab a four-pack of frozen chowder to take home with you.
Wooly’s Beach Bar and Grill is another kid-friendly option in town. It is located right by the pier and offers tons of outdoor seating so that you can whale watch while you enjoy your grub. Grab a table and order your meal at the counter and they will bring it to you.
Another spot with fantastic ocean view’s is Pismo’s Flagship restaurant. Kids will love the nautical theme and giant wooden boat inside the restaurant. It is located on a cliff above the coast and is just a short drive from the downtown area.
In nearby Shell Beach you will find F. McLintock’s Saloon and Dining House. This old west-style restaurant has enormous portions so make sure you bring your appetite. Also, ask your server to show off his water pouring skills. Their signature move is to pour water into a glass on your head, all while blindfolded (get the kids to volunteer for this one)!
A local favorite for breakfast is Surfside Donuts where you can grab the Shaka donut that is a bear claw morphed into a “hang loose” hand. Other favorite donuts are mint chip, salted caramel and the maple bacon long john. Grab some Sumptown coffee and enjoy your donuts on the beach.
Kids and adults line up at Old West Cinnamon Rolls where they have been serving sticky-sweet goodness for over 40 years. Try the crumb-topped cinnamon roll or cinnamon twists and make sure to grab some carrot cake for later. They even offer frozen cinnamon rolls to take home and bake in your own oven.
Where to Stay in Pismo Beach
Families looking to stay right in the action should shack up at the Inn at the Pier. Recently opened right across from the new Pismo Pier, this hotel offers large rooms and suites for families. A rooftop deck with a hot tub, small pool and restaurant/bar is a great spot to hang out and watch the sun set. Check their seasonal specials for options that include breakfast at the hotel’s Blonde Restaurant, located in the lobby.
If you want to stay right on the sand, the Sandcastle Inn is a great option for families. Suites include a small fridge and microwave and all guests can grab continental breakfast each morning. On the third floor there is a roof deck where you can watch the gorgeous sunsets.
Cambria
If your Central Coast adventures take you to a bit north, the town of Cambria is a great place to make your home base. Just a short drive from downtown Cambria will take you to Stepladder Ranch and Creamery where you can book a tour of the property ($20/person, kids under five are free) that includes ample time to snuggle the friendly herd of Lamancha goats. See inside the milking parlor and end the tour with a sampling of seasonal goat and cow milk cheese. Buy some to take home with you!
For a truly unique experience, hit the trails on the back of a Clydsedale! Covell’s California Clydesdale Ranch offers a two-hour trail ride for visitors to their 2000-acre Cambria property for $100/person. Learn the history of these massive animals as well as the property where they make their home. Minimum age for the trail ride is “capable” seven-year-olds.

Where to Stay in Cambria
The rustic charm, huge rooms and free buffet breakfast make the Cambria Pines Lodge a great option for families. Reserve a large suite and your crew of up to six people can spread out with two bathrooms, a king bed, queen sleeper sofa and queen Murphy bed. Ask where to find the path down to the town and you can walk down the 257 steps to grab a bite to eat or some shopping time. The resort’s pool is heated in the colder months and the garden is full of fairy houses and nooks to explore.

Head there between Thanksgiving and Christmas to enjoy the lights and festivities at the Cambria Christmas Market right on the property!
Other Central Coast Adventures
Break up the beach days with some exploring! Make sure you plan some time at Oceano Dunes where you can literally drive you car right on the beach! Pick a time when the tide is low and you’ll find loads of sand dollars at the shoreline. It is $5 to access the beach via your personal vehicle.
Those looking for more of an adrenaline rush can reserve a dune buggy from Sun Buggy Fun Rentals in Oceano. Dune buggies seat up to eight and kids as young as four years old can ride as passengers. A four-point harness, helmet and safety goggles are included with all rentals. Kids as young as eight can also reserve a single-seat ATV by the hour. There’s nothing like powering up to the top of a dune and viewing the ocean like you’ve never seen it before!
If ziplining over vineyards is your jam, head to Santa Margarita and book your spot at Margarita Adventures. You’ll get to hook up and zip down six ziplines on their course that shows you some of the gorgeous hillsides of Central California. Kids weighing 30-100 pounds can fly tandem which is a great way to get the little ones interested. Soon they’ll be adding on a wildlife hummer tour that will show you native animal habitats up close.
If you are in Pismo during the winter months, plan a stop at the Monarch Butterfly Grove to observe these colorful creatures. They stop here from October through February and cluster on the branches of the Eucalyptus trees. Helpful docents are available to answer questions and point out the best viewing locations.
A fun (and free) spot to visit in nearby Nipomo is the Luffa Farm where you can learn how these sponges are grown (spoiler alert: they are gourds!). Take a guided tour through the greenhouses to see the gourds growing and learn how they are harvested and turned into sponges. Swing by the gift shop on your way out to purchase a luffa and other products made from the luffas grown on the farm.
The Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery is a must-visit spot in San Simeon (just north of Cambria). Pretty much any time of year you can walk along the pier and see these massive animals up close. Volunteer docents are often available to answer questions.

With the difficulties amassing in 2020, more Americans have been looking forward to gleaning a little joy from the holiday season than ever before. To show just how much, Neighbor has released its 2020 “Deck the Halls” Report with some interesting finding.
The website surveyed 1,101 Americans to determine things like the best day to put up decorations, when to take them down, what time should lights turn off and how the pandemic is changing our approach to the holidays. Keep reading to see all the details!
photo: Neighbor.com
While there was no clear cut answer to which exact day is best to decorate, 80 percent of respondents believed you should wait until at least after Thanksgiving to start decorating. When it comes to keeping the lights off, about 29 percent believe that no later than 10 p.m. is the neighborly time to pull the plug each night.
So when is the “appropriate” time to take down your Christmas cheer? Survey responses indicated that its more than ok to leave them up until at least Jan. 2. But don’t wait too long––over 90 percent agreed that Feb. 1 was over the top.

Finally, the survey found that Covid is 33 percent of Americans are decorating earlier and 26 percent said they’re decorating more! Eighty-three percent of respondents straight up believe that the small act of decoration is bringing them more joy during this difficult year.
With the holidays fast approaching, it can be easy for little ones to get lost in the “getting” part of the season and forget all about the giving. This year, especially, seems like a good time to instill in kids the importance of gratitude and giving back. While many of LA’s annual Thanksgiving and Christmas volunteering events have been called off because of Covid, there are still plenty of ways for you and your little helpers to help out. Keep reading to discover how to volunteer during the holidays—and beyond.
Midnight Mission is perhaps one of the most highly regarded organizations of its kind and a place where every Angeleno hopes to volunteer at one point or another. This year, they have canceled their well-loved Annual Christmas Brunch and Santa's Village charity event but will still be distributing toys to local churches with low-income families in their congregations. The Mission is looking for volunteers to help collect toys through their Toy Drive so please give them a call or email alinares@midnightmission.org to request this year's Toy Drive Toolkit which has everything you will need to kick start your toy drive. They've even created an Amazon wish list to make collecting toys contact-free making it even easier to lend a helping hand!
What better way to give back together as a family than adopting another family who could really use the support? Through the Los Angeles County Department of Public and Social Services, you and your benevolent brood can sign up to aid low-income families served by DPSS by providing new items that will be sure to help everyone celebrate the holidays in a special way. Interested sponser families will be carefully matched with one in need and provided with their contact information along with the family’s “wish list” of requested items. These items may include groceries, home goods, clothing, gift certificates, or toys (all items must be brand new, no hand me down donations are permitted). Visit the website for more information or to register and get ready to spread lots of cheer this holiday season!
One of our fair city's largest holiday running events is going virtual for 2020! The Santa Monica-Venice Christmas Run is a family-friendly fundraiser for local non-profits, specifically Harvest Home, a non-profit residence for homeless pregnant women in Santa Monica. This year your band of merry runners can still sign up for all the holiday fun you love from the comfort of your own home (or your favorite local route)! Register for either the 5K, 10K, or Kids Fun Run and celebrate the 12 Days of Christmas through seasonal challenges, contests, and activities. Win prizes while spreading holiday cheer in a safe and festive fashion. Registration prices are $25 for the Santa's Little Elves package, $44 for the Stocking Stuffer package, and $54 for the Holiday Feast option.

Spark of Love Toy Drive For 27 years Southern California Firefighters have successfully collected toys for disadvantaged children and teens and, in the past two and a half decades, have provided more than nine million toys to local families during the holidays! Due to the current effects of the pandemic and recent wildfires, they anticipate this year's requests for toys will be higher than ever. Even though necessary safety protocols will prevent Southland fire stations from collecting toys in person, supporting the Spark of Love has never been easier. Safe, quick, and convenient toy donations are possible through their virtual toy-box gift registry or financial donations are also welcome, as they allow this wonderful organization to provide toys to communities with overwhelming needs.
Westside Thanksgiving Dinner For 37 years this community celebration has welcomed all those seeking a festive and fun volunteer experience. This year, however, is different as far as the gathering goes but they are still planning to give back to the community. They will be gathering gift cards and blankets to distribute to those most in need and the safest way to help is by donating online.

Food on Foot Food on Foot is committed to assisting low-income and homeless people through programs that offer meals, clothing, and work placement. The organization receives no government funding and relies entirely on donations. This year, you can donate online (either a set or custom amount) and your gift will go towards meals, groceries, gloves/masks, and even towards rent payments! If you and the kiddos would rather pick out specific items to donate, consider purchasing and shipping hygiene products through their Amazon wishlist where each item bought off the list will be sent directly to Food on Foot for distribution to those most in need!

One Voice For 37 years One Voice has always been able to make sure that thousands of low-income, Head Start families living in the surrounding communities received food baskets filled with everything they needed for a happy holiday. This year, though they can't gather their usual crowds of volunteers in the Barker Hangar at the Santa Monica Airport to help sort and pack, they will be giving gift cards for food and necessities to 2,000 needy families. If you would like to help, please donate what you can through their website.
While almost all of Heal the Bay's public program activities are suspended until further notice, there are still great ways for your water babies to help out with this wonderful organization. Check out their Adopt-A-Beach Program which provides a cool opportunity to learn about and participate in the conservation of our natural and coastal resources as well as help stop ocean pollution. Families can "adopt" an area by committing to three cleanups in one year at a favorite outdoor location (beach, park, creek, or even local trail). The program is extremely flexible and allows participants to choose the day, time, and location of their cleanups (making it easy to stay socially distant and safe). Volunteers will receive a virtual safety talk from Heal the Bay's staff, educational resources, and fun games as well as an official Certificate of Completion from Heal the Bay and the California Coastal Commission.
Park Champions projects are a wonderful way for the whole family to spend time outdoors together while beautifying and preserving our state parks. Because most of these sorts of volunteer opportunities take place outside, there are certainly safe ways to continue making a difference. Currently, the CA State Parks staff have worked hard to create safety protocols and procedures (distancing, wearing masks/gloves, and providing hand sanitizer) that will further ensure everyone's safety. They have also decreased the size of their volunteer groups as well as the length of the workdays. Through this volunteer program, they are planning over 100 projects throughout the year to benefit more than 30 parks across California. To sign up you'll need to register online and create your very own volunteer account where you and your family can sign up for and manage upcoming workdays!
With over 2,000 opportunities to get involved each year, Big Sunday is the mama of all LA charities. Here you’ll find the rich and famous working alongside homeless teens, in the name of developmentally challenged children. If your kids want to help others but aren’t sure where to start, Big Sunday is the perfect place. Many of the opportunities to volunteer this year will be either virtual or donation-based but there are still plenty of different (socially distant) options to explore on their website or social media pages. For instance, their Annual Thanksgiving Stuffing Event is going virtual this year and will take place online Sunday, Nov. 22 from 4 p.m. - 5 p.m. Families can sign up to either make cards, donate food, make videos, or even help assemble bags in person in small Covid-compliant groups.
Let’s give thanks this Thanksgiving for these Bay Area kids and teenagers who are showing us that even the smallest voices can make a world of change. We hope that you share these stories with your kids and let them be inspired to do good in their community. Giving back to your community doesn’t have to be a big effort, kids can start small with many different opportunities for kids to volunteer at home. Our community thanks you!
Teddy's for Tots—Cali Martire
Saratoga 4th grader Cali Martire started Teddy's For Tots when she was just five years old with a mission to make sure all children at the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital received a teddy bear for Christmas! It all began with a question: “How does Santa get the toys to the sick kids in the hospital?" From this moment, Cali made it her mission to make sure that every child at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford had a Teddy Bear on Christmas morning. Since 2016, Cali has inspired the donation of 2,500 teddy bears (and counting!)
Now in its fifth year, Teddy's for Tots has expanded in 2020 to provide gifts to children in the Santa Clara County foster care system. You can support this worthy cause by shopping the Teddy's for Tots donation page through December 1 and spreading a little holiday cheer!
Palo Alto teenager Owen Fong has been delighting neighbors with his spam musubi for months now, many finding it to be a highlight of quarantine. Owen sells spam musubi, egg musubi, and spam and egg musubi and delivers them on Mondays throughout Palo Alto. All of his profits go to charity with a different one selected each month.
Bay Area insiders know that if you want the freshest produce and local products (like pastries, honey and fresh-made ice cream), you need to get in on the bi-weekly group orders from Giving Fruits. This Palo Alto group blossomed out of a community desire to support local farmers who weren't able to get their precious products to customers due to COVID-19.
The weekly management from compiling orders to organizing volunteers is all done by Palo Alto High School senior, Jean-Pierre Mouloudj. Jean-Pierre has really taken the reigns on this massive project even when school went back into session this fall. He also started a club at Paly to support Giving Fruits and get other high schoolers involved.
Not only does purchases through Giving Fruits support local farmers, but profits from the purchases go to support frontliners and food trucks, two other groups greatly impacted by COVID-19. They also support local shelters like LifeMoves and Women’s Shelter by hhcollab.org, the South Palo Alto Food Closet, Dreamers Road Map and starting this week the Ecumenical Hunger Program.
Sometimes the smallest voices are the most powerful. Meet 8- and 10-year-old siblings Walt and Naima who are better known as The Justice Kids. These young Daly City residents are literally leading the charge on social and racial justice reform in the Bay Area. They were greatly impacted by the death of Elijah McClain and, with the support of their mother, organized a march on the Great Highway in July. Follow their Instagram page for action ideas on how kids can get involved in the social and racial justice movement from sending postcards to easy-to-use scripts for calling your representatives to demand change.
When 6-year-old Andy Soulard learned that the Oakland Zoo was in jeopardy of closing permanently due to COVID-19 she went into action. Starting with $5 she had received from the tooth fairy, Andy started a fundraising campaign that raised over $225,000 for the zoo. For every donor who donated over $25, Andy would send them a bracelet and drawing that she made. She also recently asked for Oakland Zoo donations in lieu of gifts for her 7th birthday. Talk about an inspiring kid!
