Even though Chrissy Teigen is a gorgeously famous SI swimsuit model, accomplished cookbook author and entrepreneur, she’s kind of like the rest of us mamas. Teigen recently tweeted about her recent purchase for daughter Luna’s preschool lunches—and it might sound familiar.

So your kiddo isn’t into gourmet cuisine? Their oddball preferences, such as jam on pickles or oatmeal with sweet and sour sauce, are just part of childhood. According to Teigen’s tweet, Luna’s no different.

The mom recently had to buy a bulk box of 2,000 ketchup packets for her daughter to dip cucumbers into. Teigen started the Twitter thread by writing, “I’ve been looking up good lunches to put in my kid’s bento lunch box and while everyone’s lunches look cute, my kid will never eat this sh** without me bribing, in person.”

If that sounds like your fam, then the rest of Teigen’s tweet is probably pretty relatable too, “Everyone’s stuffed olive tapenade pita cat faces can suck it. Say hello to pizza bagel.”

Of course Luna isn’t the only preschooler who is totally into her own food choices. One pre-k teacher replied, “I have a kid in my preschool class whose parents pack him a container of ketchup for dipping that he just drinks, as a lunch appetizer of sorts.”

The One Goal I Set That Changed My Entire Life

Photo: Pixabay

My name is Natasha Nurse and the goal that changed my life was choosing to be happy. This seems like an obvious goal that everyone should have, but sadly, it is not the case. So many people are unhappy in the United States (especially in New York).

It was December 2015, and I was told I was losing my job. When this happens to most people, the first thing they want to do is panic. For me, I saw an opportunity to live my life in a whole new way. I decided to live by the following six principles:

  1. Commit to my life motto: meet someone new and learn something new every day

  2. Be happy every single day

  3. Be daring and fearless, no matter what

  4. Accept there is no such thing as failure — only teachable lessons

  5. Live without regret (life is too short to live with regrets)

  6. Accept there is no such thing as no — only maybe not now or maybe with someone else

These principles helped keep me sane, focused and happy as I began my journey as an entrepreneur. This was the journey that not only gave me immense joy, but has led to opportunities in modeling, media, podcasting, radio broadcasting and journalism that I couldn’t have even imagined for myself.

The goal of being happy turned out to be the most important goal that I could have ever set for myself. Now, since living this way, I couldn’t imagine living any other way.

Now that you know my one goal that changed my life, I think it is important to focus on the practical steps I took to apply and stay committed to this goal. Here are my seven steps to success.

1. Get clear on your intention.

My one goal was happiness, because I was a person who focused on accomplishing many things in my life (starting at a very young age) but no one told me that I needed to make sure I was happy. Happiness was like an afterthought or completely irrelevant. I was groomed to be productive and accomplished. However, I soon realized accomplishments without a sense of happiness or joy was completely pointless, so I needed to make a change. I knew that if I shifted how I defined what success meant, then my entire life would change.

2. Create an action plan.

Goals are great. But if there isn’t an action plan in place, how likely are you to achieve that goal? Zero to None. For me to be happy, I needed to be very clear on identifying what made me happy. Luckily, I am fairly low maintenance, so the things on my happiness list include:

  • Reading everyday

  • Napping (when I really need it)

  • Dancing

  • Singing

  • Shopping (mostly on Vudu or Amazon)

  • Prioritizing my needs

  • Being creative (i.e. drawing, coloring, sketching, painting)

  • Creating and developing ideas with the hubby

  • Relaxing with the pets

  • Watching movies and television shows (no matter how many times I have watched them)

  • Working on my business (i.e. coaching, consulting, speaking at events, creating online content, etc.)

What was my action plan for happiness? It was simple. If I do at least one activity on this happiness list a day, then I was successful for the day. If I accomplish more than one activity, then I am a super star.

3. Eliminate distractors or deterrence.

Eliminating naysayers, haters and toxic people was a huge step for me to take to succeed. Why? Those individuals are drowning in their own misery so much, they can’t help but attempt to bring you down as well. For me, cutting these people out of my life was the only way  to have the freedom of time and mental capacity to focus on me, my business, and what I want to accomplish in this world. If you are determined to accomplish your goal, you will find yourself in the same boat (hint: this will be hard at first, but you will thank yourself repeatedly).

4. Hold yourself accountable.

When achieving a new goal, do you think it is important to have benchmarks along the way? Well, it is. In order to achieve a goal, you have to have tasks and steps along the way. You should attach deadlines to these to ensure your goal gets accomplished. As an overachiever, my goal is really a lifetime goal, so I needed to create a plan that required me to be accountable each day (aka Happiness Checklist). If you are working towards accomplishing a goal, how will you hold yourself accountable?

5. Be kind to yourself.

We can be our number one advocate or our very worst enemy. When we stumble or sometimes fall flat on our faces, it might seem natural to get down on ourselves. But I am here to tell you to stop it! This is neither helpful nor necessary for accomplishing your goal. Sometimes you are not going to hit the ball out of the park. Sometimes you will strike out. That is not only okay, it is a good thing. Stumbling or “failures” are a teachable moment where you can learn. Life is all about learning more about yourself and the world you live in.

If there are days where I don’t get to check something off my happiness list, I don’t tell myself that I failed. Instead, I accept that I didn’t take care of myself for the day. I identify what stood in the way of prioritizing my happiness, then make an action plan so that the next day I am back on target. Most of all, I am kind and understanding to myself. That is the only way to make sure I can start the next day with the best mindset and attitude possible.

6. Acknowledge every victory.

No victory is too small or too large to celebrate. By celebrating every victory, you are giving yourself motivation and confidence to keep pushing towards your goal. You can’t expect anyone to do this for you. Your goal will never be as important to anyone else as it is to you. So, smile and appreciate every victory along the way.

7. Document the process.

If you document your process (the good, the bad, and everything in between), then the following will happen:

  • You will have a record of the journey to look back and reflect on

  • You will see just how much blood, sweat, and tears went into achieving your goal

  • You will inspire others to pursue their dreams and to share their journey as well

  • You will publicly hold yourself accountable for what you are looking to achieve

It might not be easy to document the journey. When you achieve your goal however, you will be happy you took the time to document how you made your dream a reality!

The NFL’s 100-Year Super Bowl commercial featured a lot of famous faces, but there was one that stuck out because it was the only girl among dozens of male players. Samantha Gordon might not be a household name, but she should be once you learn what she’s accomplished in her 15 years.

From Peyton to Montana there were many NFL stars in the ad that played during the Super Bowl last weekend, but none are quite as inspiring as 15-year-old Samantha Gordon. The young athlete made waves in 2012 when she broke the mold in her all-boys tackle football league where she scored 35 touchdowns and rushed for more than 2,000 yards. Her dad, Brent Gordon shared a video of her playing on YouTube and she became an overnight sensation.

“When she was about 3 or 4 years old and we would play soccer out in the yard with my older son . . . and they’d try to be a little bit rough with her and even intentionally try to kick the ball at her and she wouldn’t be fazed and would keep getting up,” Brent told Good Morning America back in 2012. “I kind of had an idea that she’s got an aggressive mentality back then.”

From there Samantha went on to break more barriers and, with her dads help, she established the Utah Girls Tackle Football League, the first all-girls tackle football league in the US, in 2015. She was awarded the first ever NFL Game Changer Award in 2017.

Next season the NFL will celebrate its 100-year anniversary and hopefully Samantha’s appearance in the ad signals a shift for the future of an otherwise male-dominated league. Regardless of what she does next, it’s all but guaranteed to be great.

I can’t believe one month into 2019 is already gone! It’s such a great time of year to reassess our lives and what’s important to us. Usually it’s around this time of year that we realize we should be spending more of our precious time with family and friends and taking care of our health. This typically means eating and drinking better or exercising more. Many find the goals they set for the New Year quickly dwindle as the year gets busy and we get back into our same bad habits and routines.

Did you know that by February most people have given up on their resolutions?!

To help with that, I’ve put together six hacks that you can implement with your family that will help guide you through out the entire year

Start Small

Whatever your family’s large goal is break it down into small daily tasks you all can accomplish easily. Instead of, “We are going to exercise more;” decide to take the stairs everywhere you can instead of the elevator. When it comes to food, instead of saying, “We are going to eat healthier”, say “We are going to cook a healthy home cooked meal at least three times per week”. For learning something new, instead of, “We’re going to learn a new language,” purchase a CD program and agree to listen to a language CD for 20 minutes every day. The best way to take a large impossible goal is to turn it into small manageable tasks.

Get The Hard Stuff Done First

Procrastination is a hard habit to kick and most of us try to put off the hard stuff as long as possible. I say do those things first and get them out of the way. Make exercise your first task of the day so you don’t have to worry about fitting it in later. Plus, you’ll feel really good about yourself all day long because you’ve already accomplished something so great for the day.

Replace Screen Time for Goal Time

Take a true inventory of how much time you each are spending in front of a screen – computer, TV, tablet, phone and reassess your priorities. More screen time means less of everything else time whether that’s spending time with each other or spending time taking care of yourselves (for example things like exercising or taking the time to make a healthy meal).

Find Some Balance

These days, families are busier than ever, sometimes to the point of exhaustion. Take time to look at your schedules and determine what activities are most important. Consider minimizing your activities so you have more down time to rest and recuperate during the week and give you more time to accomplish new goals as a family.

Go For Walks (Exercise & Reconnect)

Taking the family on a walk regularly throughout the week not only helps with getting much needed exercise in but it also allows the family to bond much more than usual. It’s important to leave all technology at home on your walks and really spend time talking with each other.

Be Thankful & Grateful

As soon as everyone wakes up in the morning, write down three things that you are thankful for. There is science behind thankfulness and happiness. The more thankful you are, the happier you are, the happier you are, the more likely you are to accomplish your goals for the day.

I hope these tips help you and your family get focused for the New Year and really put some plans into action that will allow you to reach your 2019 goals. Good luck!

Ruby Kate Chitsey spends a lot of time in nursing homes, despite the fact that she is only 11 years old;Ruby Kate’s mom, Amanda Milford Chitsey, is a nurse practitioner serving five nursing homes near Harrison, Arkansas. After discovering that many residents were in need of some cheering up and extra care, she launched a campaign and raised money to grant wishes.

During the summer Ruby Kate, likes to accompany her mom to work and spend time with the residents and last year she got the idea to give them some much needed joy. She came up with a plan to grant wishes for the residents, with a project she called “Three Wishes for Ruby’s Residents.”

“They weren’t new cars or a million dollars [they wanted]. They were very simple things that you could just go in Walmart and get—and that’s what we do,” Ruby Kate told CNN.

To help make those simple, but life-changing wishes come true, Ruby Kate’s mom helped her set up a GoFundMe campaign. She has since raised $70,000 and granted hundreds of wishes from basic needs like blankets and pillows, to Happy Meals and dolls for dementia patients.

Ruby Kate’s mom couldn’t be more proud of what her daughter has accomplished and her work is not over yet. “I think Ruby’s starting a movement—recognizing a need and just doing something about it. This is about their quality of life—bringing them joy,” Chitsey said.

Bill and Hillary are about to become grandparents—again! Former first daughter Chelsea Clinton is pregnant. The 38-year-old mom of two recently announced her third pregnancy, tweeting a sweet post on Jan. 22.

Clinton and hubby Marc Mezvinsky are already parents to daughter Charlotte, 4, and son Aidan, 2. And now it looks like the preschooler and toddler are about to become a big sis (again) and big bro (for the first time).

The son-to-be third time around celeb mama tweeted, “Marc and I have loved watching Charlotte be such a wonderful big sister and we’re excited to watch Aidan become a big brother! We cannot wait to meet our newest addition later this summer.” So there you have it. While Clinton hasn’t confirmed an exact due date, judging by the tweet she’s looking at a July or August birth.

With baby number three on the way, it looks like Clinton will have her hands full. But she’ll have plenty of kid-friendly reading for her growing brood of tots. Along with her former first daughter status, Clinton is an accomplished children’s author. Her latest book, Start Now!: You Can Make a Difference made its grand debut last fall.

We all have those days. Find the other shoe. Wipe the toddler’s nose. Read a book for the 102nd time. Coffee got warmed up four times and you were never in any room, including the bathroom, by yourself. Some me time can be difficult to come by. But it’s so important.

Your family needs you. And you need to take care of yourself. We hear this all the time. But somehow we have chunks of time where it slips our minds. We get so consumed with being a parent we aren’t even sure what to do when we have a moment to ourselves.

So here is a friendly little reminder to take some time to recharge.

And while you’re doing that try these things to get the most out of those precious moments of time to yourself.

Read and Write

Find what inspires you whether it’s Brene Brown or a romance novel and get lost in the pages for a few minutes. Or take a few moments to write down your thoughts. Consider keeping a gratitude journal to keep track of things that make you happy. Research has shown that putting pen to paper relieves stress, slows down our thinking and helps alleviate anxiety. And who couldn’t use some stress relief?

Skip Social Media

The people in your newsfeed are not invited for your me time. So ignore the pings, resist the urge to scroll and focus on yourself. Consider your goals for the rest of the day and think about things that have gone right lately. You can watch your friend’s kid learning to walk later.

Meditation Apps

Social media might be out. But there are some amazing apps designed specifically for relieving stress and anxiety. These apps give you quick and easy guidance with relaxation tracks and check-ins about your mood. They’re perfect for regrouping, refreshing and motivating you to get back to your day.

Create

Research shows that creativity and play are just as important to our health as rest. Maybe knitting or scrapbooks aren’t your thing. Even something like creating a google photo album or editing the latest picture of your little can make you feel creative and accomplished.

Exercise

You had to know exercise would make this list. And of course it does because it’s so important. It doesn’t have to be a hot yoga class. A walk around the block can energize you and clear your head.

Think of your me time like a power nap. Just like naps, even if you don’t have time for 90 minutes you can make the most of the 20 you have. Treat me time the same way. When you find a moment use your time wisely, make the most of it, focus on yourself and recharge.

Your family will thank you.
