Do you feel like you’ve aged overnight since having children? That feeling may not be just in your head. A new study led by Penn State researchers found that the number of times a person gives birth may also affect the body’s aging process.

Pregnant

Researchers examined several different measures that represent how a person’s body is aging and found that people who had few births or many seemed to have aged quicker than those who had given birth three or four times. However, these effects were found only after a person had gone through menopause.

“Our findings suggest that pregnancy and birth may contribute to the changing and dysregulation of several different physiological systems that may affect aging once a person is post-menopause,” said Talia Shirazi, a doctoral candidate in biological anthropology at Penn State. “This is consistent with the metabolic, immunological, and endocrinological changes that occur in the body during pregnancy and lactation, as well as the various disease risks that are associated with pregnancy and reproductive investment more generally.”

Pregnancy and breastfeeding use a large amount of the body’s energy and can affect many of its systems, including immune function, metabolism, and blood pressure, among others. Additionally, people who have given birth are more likely to die from diabetes, kidney disease and hypertension, among other conditions, than those who have not.

The researchers were curious about how the body balances these “costs of reproduction” and whether it affects how the body ages.

“We think there’s something going on, some sort of trade-off, between aging and reproduction,” Shirazi said. “This makes sense from an evolutionary biology point of view, because if you’re spending energy in pregnancy and breastfeeding, you probably don’t have as much energy to allocate towards things like physiological maintenance and defense.”

For the study, the researchers used data on 4418 participants from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Data included information about reproductive health including the number of live births and whether they had gone through menopause or not. They measured biological aging in several ways based on nine biomarkers designed to assess metabolic health, kidney and liver function, anemia and red blood cell disorders, immune function and inflammation.

“We wanted to look at measures that would help capture the age and functioning of the body’s major organ systems, instead of looking at aging at the cellular level,” said Waylon Hastings, postdoctoral researcher at Penn State. “When we think about pregnancy, we don’t think about changes to individual cells but instead about how the immune system or metabolism changes, for example.”

The researchers found a “U-shaped relationship” between the number of live births and accelerated biological aging. Those reporting zero or few live births, or reporting many live births, had markers of quicker biological aging than those who reported three or four live births. This was true even when controlling for chronological age, lifestyle and other health related and demographic factors.

Shirazi said that because the data was taken at one point in time, it’s not currently possible to know what caused these associations. But she said one possible explanation for the findings recently published in Scientific Reports is the presence, or lack, of ovarian hormones in post-menopausal people.

“Previous research has found that generally, ovarian hormones are protective against some cellular level processes that might accelerate aging,” Shirazi said. “So it’s possible that in pre-menopausal women the effect of hormones are buffering the potential negative effect of pregnancy and reproduction on biological age acceleration. And then perhaps when the hormones are gone, the effects can show themselves.”

Hastings said the study also suggests that additional research can be done to understand the processes that may be involved in the connection between aging and having children, as well as how these processes work over time.

“This transition into menopause, and female reproductive health in general, is very much under researched and not as well understood as it should be at this time,” Hastings said. “So if we can see that there are these changes in aging as a function of reproduction and menopause, and we don’t have a great explanation for why, then that’s a sign we should investigate this more.”

Physical activity is extremely important to the well-being of children. Regular outdoor play helps build strong bones and muscles, improves cardiopulmonary strength, controls weight and reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety among children and adolescents. According to The World Health Organization, it is recommended for children aged between 5 and 17 years to participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day.

Playgrounds are a great option to ensure physical activity for children, along with some fresh air. It also gives them the opportunity to use up their vast reserves of energy and socialize with others of their own age.

Although playgrounds are a great source of fun, they are also places where children are likely to get injured. However, most playground injuries tend to be just minor scrapes and cuts, which is an integral part of the growing anyway. But there also runs the risk of children suffering more serious injuries. According to data provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, around 200,000 children aged 14 years and younger are treated by emergency departments across the US for playground-related injuries. And over 20,000 of these children are treated for traumatic brain injury. These statistics do not mean that you don’t allow your children to challenge themselves on the playground. It only means that all play should be under adult supervision and you need to choose a playground that ensures safety.

Here are some things to keep in mind while checking out the safety of a playground.

The Correct Surfacing: Almost 80% of all playground injuries are caused due to falling. This makes it imperative for you to ensure that there is enough shock-absorbing material used in the playground surfaces, such as wood chips, gravel, sand, mulch, or shredded rubber, according to PlaygroundExperts.com. It is recommended that there should be at least 12 inches of shock-absorbing material around playground equipment. Playgrounds that only have concrete, dirt, asphalt, or grassy surfaces are unable to absorb the impact of a fall and should be avoided.

Age Appropriate Equipment: Playground equipment is designed specifically for children of different age groups. When, children try to use equipment not meant for them, it can lead to injuries. The straps and rails of the equipment may not be able to secure a child who is lighter and smaller than the age group the equipment is designed for. It is important that you look for signs indicating the recommended age for using the equipment. Some playgrounds also have distinct play areas for children of different age groups.

Dress to Play: Before going to the playground, ensure that your child is dressed in clothes that keep them comfortable and safe. It is important that the clothes not have loose or flowing parts that run the risk of getting caught in the playground equipment. Children should also not wear anything around their necks, such as sweatshirts with drawstrings, bike helmets, and necklaces, as these could lead to a risk of strangulation. It is also best to avoid wearing sandals and flip flops, as they are not designed to protect the feet from injury. Instead, closed-toe shoes, with the laces tightly tied, should be chosen.

Beware of Sun Exposure: According to the National Program for Playground Safety, of all the playgrounds surveyed, only 3% had full shade protection, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., whereas there was partial shade in 30% of the playgrounds. The remaining playgrounds were completely exposed to the rays of the sun during the said period. It is advisable to limit sun exposure during times when the sun is shining the strongest. Playing in shaded areas at this time is advisable to avoid the harmful effect of exposure to UV rays, as well as the risk of overheating among children. In case the equipment is too hot to touch, do not allow your child to play on it since it can lead to burns.

Playgrounds are a great place for children to grow and develop multiple skills. The key is to ensure that they stay safe while having fun.

New research points to the benefits of early physical activity. As it turns out, and not surprisingly so, getting active equaled better health outcomes.

The study, published in the American Academy of Pediatrics’ journal Pediatrics, looked at the effects of moderate to vigorous activity on 418 children age three through five as they aged. Researchers assessed the children’s activity level annually for three years.

photo: Agung Pandit Wiguna via Pexels

Along with evaluating total physical activity and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, the researchers assessed specific cardiovascular health indicators. In this case, they looked at cardiovascular fitness, resting arterial stiffness and seated systolic blood pressure. And don’t worry—there’s no need to have an MD after your name to understand the study results. Overall, the researchers found that moderate to vigorous exercise had important heart health benefits.

So what does this mean for your child? To start with, don’t wait to get them active. Based on this study’s data early physical activity is an important part of cardiovascular health. While the study doesn’t say whether the heart health benefits remain into adulthood, upping your kiddo’s physical activity quotient from on-the-couch to running around the yard certainly couldn’t hurt.
