Stains: they are the hallmark of true parenting (and a sure result of a girls-night-in). While you might be able to let a few slide, some of them just could cost you the deposit on your apartment or incite a desire to replace your shag with something more, well, wipeable. We polled our editorial staff—who know a thing or two about stain removal—and got together their best tips. Scroll down for 18 simple ways to keep it clean.

1. Use boiling water for red wine: You might have heard the tried and true soda water/cold water rinse for red wine, but here’s a method our editors swear by—pour boiling water over the red wine stain and blot it up with a cloth (Note: do not blot it before without water).

2. Use lemon for sweat rings: Use lemon juice and water on sweat stains. Make a little potion and soak the area. Baking soda and water paste can help remove underarm stains on white clothing.

3. Use salt for red wine and grease stain: Pour salt on the stain to soak up any extra wine, then soak in cold water for 30 min. For blood, one hour in cold saltwater. Salt also helps absorb grease stains!

4. Use Shock It Clean. No, we don’t mean singing perfectly on-pitch to "Side to Side" and shocking the crowd. One of our editors turned us on to this product, and we are telling you that it removes every carpet stain ever. Including that weird pee stain you only just now noticed and can’t tell if it’s human or pet.

5. Use white wine on red wine: Yes, you have to waste a little white wine, but that’s nothing compared to wasting a good Sangiovese (Yes, we realize this is the third wine stain hack. What?).

Tyler Nix via Unsplash

6. Use white vinegar to get out coffee stains: Try white vinegar on coffee stains (on clothing). Soak for at least 8 hrs.

7. Chalk works on oil: Liquid dish soap is the most effective treatment for oil stains, but a stick of chalk can help absorb it quickly. Use a paper towel to blot up as much oil as possible, then rub the chalk stick on it. Wash as soon as possible.

8. One word: Oxiclean (That's one word, right?). Grass stains have met their match.

9. Use nail polish remover on paint: If you’ve got paint on the jeans you just couldn’t bring yourself to take off before touching up the walls, try shaving it off with a razor. Super stubborn paint stains from the people who painted before you can be combatted with nail polish remover and elbow grease.

10. Aluminum foil works wonder on rust: You can remove rust by lightly scrubbing with aluminum foil. Add a little white vinegar to really scrape off stubborn stuff.

Callum Hill via Unsplash

11. Lemons make your sink shine: Clean up the gunk and shine up the chrome of your faucets using lemons. You can use a half-lemon or a wedge to squeeze into narrow spots and it works great to get your stainless steel sink to gleam too.

12. Toothpaste will make your diamonds sparkle: Use toothpaste to polish your silver rings and get rid of those tarnished stains.

13. Take care with rubbing alcohol to get nail polish out of the carpet: If you spill nail polish on the carpet or floor, use a microfiber cloth to absorb as much as you can, then continue blotting with rubbing alcohol and microfiber cloth (Nail polish remover can damage hardwoods and other flooring surfaces, but you can try soaking the microfiber cloth in a bit of remover before washing).

14. Baking soda and white vinegar works on pet messes: To clean up poop, dog or otherwise, from the carpet you'll need white vinegar and baking soda. And a lot of paper towels. And probably gloves. Just let the paste fizz and blot, fizz and blot. It's like a mini-volcano of gross.

lightstargod via Pixabay

15. Cornstarch on a decorated dog: Kids got markers and/or paints and painted your dog? (No, oh, just wait...) If your pooch is light-colored, cornstarch can help lighten the fur back up.

16. Shout also works on pet messes: You can try your average carpet cleaner or "pet stain remover" but we found nothing takes care of the remains of the day like a laundry stain remover, i.e. extra-strength Shout.

17. Soda on garage grease stains. Pour a can of Coke on a greasy stain in your garage. (Diet Coke won't cut it, but you can always try.)

18. If all else fails: Give up (wear dark colors, or beige if you’re preventing spit-up stains; make sure your carpets are artfully swirly; put smocks on your kids every day).

Is the sun out today? Then you’ve got the power you need to make an eco-friendly oven just for melting marshmallows and chocolate! Ooey-gooey and super easy, this s’mores science project is also a great, yummy introduction to the power of solar energy. Read on for this delicious science experiment your kids will love.

Note – cooking time depends on the temperature outdoors.

You Will Need:
A pizza box
Aluminum foil
Clear page protectors (or plastic wrap)
Clear tape
Black construction paper
Graham Crackers
Marshmallows
Chocolate

Method:
1. Cut a flip in the lid of the pizza box, leaving about an inch border around the edge.

2. Cover the lid with aluminum foil (with the shiny part facing you). Line the bottom of the box with foil as well.

3. Glue the black construction paper over the foil on the bottom.

4. Inside the lid, use clear tape to seal the page protectors or plastic wrap over the opening. This will create a barrier so that the hot air can’t escape, creating a “greenhouse” effect and heating your make-shift oven.

5. Take your oven outside, and set up your graham crackers. Place a piece of chocolate on one side and a marshmallow on the other. Don’t stack!

6. Angle the foil flap to reflect directly into the box. Then wait for the melting to begin!

7. Once the chocolate has melted and the marshmallows look soft, bring the two pieces together and eat!

How the make-shift oven works: The reflective aluminum foil captures sunlight and projects it onto the black construction paper, which retains the heat. As the heat collects, it warms up the air inside the box, creating a nice hot box (aka the “greenhouse effect”) in the sealed oven. Results? A sweet treat for your scientist!

Have you tried this project before? Let us know your results!

For a stroller that’s compact and durable, but without sacrificing style points turn to the Bugaboo Bee 5. It’s a no-brainer for on-the-go city families. It’s super easy for parents to use and ultra comfortable for baby to cruise around in. Here’s what we like about it:

Nimble for caregiver
The Bugaboo Bee 5 has an incredibly lightweight yet comprehensive design. This stroller is meant for daily use as its advanced four-wheel suspension can take on any cracked sidewalks, bumpy streets, or park terrain. That means whether you’re one-handed steering through tight spaces like train cars and coffee shops or squeezing onto an escalator, the Bugaboo Bee 5 does it with ease.

And the compact chassis makes it extremely easy to fold and store just about anywhere. Everything can be done with a single hand, which kind of defines city living: swiping a metropass, hailing a taxi, or pushing a swing while sipping your morning latte. You always need one hand free.

Comfortable for baby
Bugaboo is practically synonymous with luxury when it comes to baby gear. It’s like flying first class for your little one because it’s just that comfy. The seat has extra padding and three different recline positions to switch up depending on what your child needs at that moment: an eye out to the world or a stroller nap. The seat is also fully reversible, so your baby can face you or face out to take in the sights and scenes.

Navigating stairs, subways, and sidewalks is never a problem, whether you’re exploring your neighborhood or traveling far from home. When baby is a newborn, use the baby bassinet and glide on over to storytime at the local library. When she grows with enough neck control to sit upright, use the child seat to chauffeur your tot to and from preschool or daycare. Don’t forget to stash everything you need in the spacious underseat basket with its own built-in pocket.

High on city style
No matter your personal style, Bugaboo has you covered. The Bee 5 is fully customizable from canopy cover to seat fabric choice. Choose from a modern black or sleek aluminum chassis. Then pair it with the blue mélange, grey mélange, black or steel blue fabric for a look that’s impeccably clean and chic. The Bee 5 has the bassinet option (for an extra cost), which we love since you can start using the Bee 5 the minute you get home from the hospital.

Prefer to use an infant car seat? Simply purchase adapters and pair them with any compatible car seat or place your tot in the provided seat with sun canopy. It’s bound to become a quintessential part of any city kid’s street style.

Children diagnosed with autism tend to struggle with sensory stimulation, from the touch, noise, taste, or other sensitivities. Their symptoms usually include difficulty in processing this sensory information from the world around them. If they don’t know how to handle it, it can make ordinary interactions and situations quite overwhelming for them to deal with. Eventually, it may affect their daily function and isolate them from other people and the rest of the world. This is why it helps if you engage kids with autism with sensory activities to help them overcome sensory difficulties and improve their daily function.

Sensory arts and activities can help children with autism stay regulated, experience various senses in a controlled, calm, and fun way, and connect with other people better. These are seven sensory arts and crafts activities that can help kids with autism.

1. Plastic Baggy Painting

This activity is great for a starter activity to play with paint without having to actually touch it and make a big mess. Squish paint inside a Ziploc plastic bag, use multiple colors to make mixing more fun, and close the top. Tape the bag to the table and let your child paint using the mix of colors inside it. Talk to your child about the mix of colors and the images that they can create.

2. Create Personalized T-shirts

You can always have fun with laser printers by creating personalized T-shirts with your child. Prepare the design that your child wants along with the T-shirt ready for customization. Assist your child all the way through the engraving process, waiting for the machine to finish. If you know how to use the machine yourself, then you should be able to achieve the T-shirt design that your child has in mind. They should be even prouder that they’d get to wear the design that they made themselves. This activity can help develop your child’s processing of their sense of touch and sight.

3. Latex-gloved Finger Painting

Finger painting can be really fun for your child with autism, but with the latex gloves involved, it can be less messy since you won’t have to clean tiny fingers. Prepare some latex or non-latex gloves if your child’s allergic, construction paper, a container of washable paint, small containers, and an old bedsheet. To avoid a paint-filled mess, bring the activity outside. Lay the sheet down, fill the small containers with some of the paint, put the construction paper, and let your child wear the gloves. Then, let them free their creative mind and paint!

4. Sand Art

Sand can expose your kids to a different textural and auditory experience, but regular sand can be pretty dangerous to your child with autism so it’s best to create edible sand. Prepare some colorful sand, liquid food coloring, salt, Ziploc baggie, construction paper, glue, and disposable aluminum pan. You can make it more fun by playing in your backyard. Just get one of those silent generators for home use and light up your backyard, spread a blanket and a couple of cozy pillows and you have the perfect playing atmosphere.

5. Water Tub Colors

This can get quite messy, but it’s a fun activity that you can do outside. Prepare a large clear tub, soap, food coloring, and a few small containers. Kids in the autism spectrum often feel comfortable dealing with water, so this is something that they can do without difficulty. Fill the tub with water and soap and the smaller containers with colored soapy water. Guide your child on how to make different colors with the soapy water using the food coloring. This is a pretty simple activity that will teach your child about color mixing, while letting them enjoy it with their touch and sight.

6. Styrofoam Sculptures

If you have received packages with protective Styrofoam, make sure to keep them. They would make for food materials for Styrofoam sculptures, along with some toothpicks. Along with your child, you can break up the Styrofoam pieces and connect them with toothpicks, as required by the sculpture that your child has in mind. Let their imagination run free! To make the sculptures look even more impressive, you can give your child some markers to color them up. Let them take this activity with their sense of touch, sight, and hearing.

7. Bubble Wrap Painting

Bubble wraps can be more than just something that you can pop to keep your hands busy. They are also great materials for a sensory activity with children with autism. Just prepare it with a gallon of paint, an old bedsheet, a roll of packing tape, disposable aluminum pan, and a large area where your child can freely paint. Layout the bedsheet outside, put some of the paint on the aluminum pan and put it close to your child. Then, wrap your child’s feet in bubble wrap and secure them with packing tape. Lead your child to stand in the pan, then to walk, jump or run on the laid out bed sheet. With their feet, let them enjoy scattering the color around while hearing the satisfying pop of the bubbles under their feet. That should make for some great sensory input through their sight, hearing, and touch.

Try these activities with children with autism and help them deal better with sensation overload. Help introduce the fun side of the otherwise overwhelming world to your child by doing these projects.

And when nighttime sleep is at a new premium, you can rest easy knowing that your child is beside your bed in the COVE aire.

How Nuna is different:
The brand that has delivered some of the best baby products and gear now promises a bassinet-crib-play yard combo that new and expectant parents can depend upon for the first three years of their child’s life. Its ventilated mesh sides, floor and mattress allow for abundant airflow while dissipating heat and humidity. The slim and simple, yet stylish silhouette fits with any traditional or modern decor and is available in three beautiful, neutral tones: Caviar, Frost and Champagne.

Discerning parents will appreciate details like the system’s sturdy aluminum frame with easy, one-handed folding, an above-ground base to keep baby protected from drafts, panels that remove for deep cleaning, and skid-proof feet that keep the COVE aire in place. The practical and versatile design is perfect for everyday use.

COVE aire features worth calling out:

  • Advanced air design™ with 360° ventilation for ideal airflow
  • Contoured napper with customizable recline
  • Zip-off bassinet that folds with frame
  • GOTS certified organic sheet, napper and carry bag all included

Babies need a place to rest. Parents need a product they can trust. The COVE aire is a flexible and easy sleep solution that grows with your baby so that lullabies can become dreams.
