When I was pregnant with my second, my OB accidentally spilled the baby beans to my almost-three-year-old. I was lying on the exam table, holding the measuring tape at the top of my oversized belly when it happened. My doctor casually leaned over and asked my son if he was excited about becoming a big brother.

My toddler cycled through all the feels—excitement, confusion, shock—before shooting me a look that let me know it was time to let him in on the secret. While we weren’t necessarily keeping the news from my firstborn, my husband and I weren’t exactly advertising it either. Turns out we had already done a few things that clinical psychologist Maureen Turner agreed were good first steps.

As she explains, “kids thrive on connection and consistency,” and any time a baby enters a family this gets uprooted in parents’ lives. By trying to keep things as consistent as possible and carving out special time for your sibling-to-be, you can help them through this major life change. Here are Maureen’s top tips to prepare your toddler for a new baby.

Don’t attempt any big transitions around the time of baby’s arrival

Maureen suggests not making any major transitions right before or after the baby’s arrival. So if your toddler is taking up prime crib real estate (as ours was), make sure to move them to a different bed well before the baby needs the crib (as we did). It’s also not a great time to start potty training, retire a comfort paci or transition from sippies to big kid cups. Try to maintain a consistent environment and routine as much as possible during this time.

Try to keep routines as consistent as possible

Part of that overall consistency is figuring out what part of your family’s daily routine you can maintain once the baby arrives. For me, it was naptime. Maybe the bath time/storytime/bedtime trifecta is a stalwart in your house. Or maybe it’s gathering for family dinner. Whatever it is, building in predictability is key to helping toddlers with this exciting change, according to Maureen.

Help foster a connection with the new baby

In addition to moving our son into his big kid bed, we also added one of my favorites—The Berenstain Bears: New Baby—to our nighttime reading in anticipation of the baby’s arrival.

Maureen says that fostering connections between soon-to-be sibs and a new baby should be a cornerstone of adding to your fam. Take, for example, reading the Berenstain Bears book. Talking with my son about how he would soon be a big brother and exploring his questions and thoughts was a great way for him to connect with his soon-to-arrive sister and me. Signing kids up for a siblings class, having them make something special for the baby, like a painting or a story, or even picking out a special gift to give the baby are all ways that parents can help their older kids connect with the latest addition.

Remember that your toddler may still act out

It’s hard to anticipate all the changes that come with welcoming a baby, but come they will. And when it comes to challenging toddler behavior, you count on that too. Maureen reminds parents to “interpret behavior changes as communication.” Young kids don’t have the emotional vocabulary to express complicated feelings or needs. It’s one of the reasons carving out special time to connect with them daily once the baby arrives is important.

In the end, that unexpected nudge from my OB forced my hand in a good way. While things weren’t warm-knife-through-butter smooth when the baby arrived (but then again what part of parenting is?), we made it to the other side as a family of four… and eventually five.

In a TikTok video, a pediatric physical therapist explains why “tummy time” isn’t really a thing in other countries—but why it’s still important

Tummy time, the practice of placing your infant on their stomach to play, is a very common part of raising a baby in the U.S. But apparently, in the rest of the world, it’s not. Recently, an American mom who gave birth in France went viral for a video of a French pediatrician telling her not to do tummy time, causing moms everywhere to stress about what’s actually best for their babies’ development.

“I had multiple professionals being like, ‘You shouldn’t be putting your baby in uncomfortable positions especially if they’re not already getting themselves into that position,'” the American mom in France said in one video. “If they’re rolling over onto their tummy, that’s one thing, but putting them in positions that they aren’t able to get into naturally is developmentally inappropriate.”

But that’s not the standard advice in the U.S., and a pediatric physical therapist made a video response to explain why medical advice for infants is so different in France—and why tummy time is still very important, despite that one doctor’s guidance.

Dr. Bonnie Soto explained that the guidance varies because tummy time is all about helping your baby build muscle, but it isn’t the only way to do that.

“If you live here in the United States, if you’ve been around my page for a while, you know that tummy time is a big thing and it is important, but I don’t think in the way that people understand,” she said.

@milestonemama

I’ve been trying to find a moment to talk about this all week 😅 So many differences in how we raise children that affect this convo #tummytime #newborn #babytips #newborn #babiesoftiktok #postpartum #parentsoftiktok #milestones #motorskills #momsoftiktok #dadsoftiktok

♬ Paradise – TELL YOUR STORY music by Ikson™

Dr. Soto explained that when we used to put babies to sleep on their stomachs, they got plenty of tummy time naturally, right after waking up from each period of sleep throughout the day. But once we learned it was dangerous to let babies sleep on their stomachs, she said, parents overcompensated and started being afraid to put their babies on their stomachs at all. That’s when pediatricians started recommending “tummy time” for play. But once again, parents overcorrected.

“I think parents get really stressed out about it,” she said. “Then it becomes this big to-do, like, ‘Oh my god—I have to fit tummy time in,’ and parents are being told things like your baby has to do an hour of tummy time a day. Oh my gosh, that’s crazy.”

Dr. Soto explained that the goal of pediatricians’ recommendations is not to get parents to fit in a regimented 30 minutes of tummy time every day. It’s to get them to give their babies lots of attention, care, and variety to help their bodies grow and develop.

“Roll into tummy time after a diaper change for a few minutes and you can sit and chit-chat with them,” she said. “Your baby needs to snuggle you on your chest and take a nap, take a contact nap, get in the baby carrier, or just lay there and chit-chat in your face as you’re leaning back. Those are all part of a tummy time program.”

She continued, “Your baby needs free, unrestricted movement. They need connection with you. You just holding your baby, snuggling them, moving them around in different positions is good for their development.”

So there you have it. Don’t ditch tummy time, but don’t treat it as a hard and fast rule, either. The important thing is to help your baby move as much as you can, so they can keep building strength all over their bodies.

Getting through security can be intimidating enough, but toting a baby, bottles, and all the other infant sundries can make the process near nightmarish. The good news is that baby bottles and snacks are not subject to the 3 oz. liquid rule the rest of the population must abide by. So stock up that carry-on with all the supplies you need, and per TikToker Jai Lynn, you are able to request that no agent tampers with anything your little one might touch with their mouth.

Being a stay-at-home mom sounds a bit like a dream, right? After all the years of working, earning and saving, finally, the day comes when you’re off on maternity leave. Maybe a nice baby shower with lots of cake and cute clothes and teddy bears. Then, finally, you get to sit and put your feet up and wait for this little person to take over your life.

And then he or she arrives. No sleep, lots of crying, constant hunger… and that’s just you! Babies are so demanding at first, and our whole life is about trying to seek out a little bit of undisturbed sleep where we aren’t worrying about whether the baby has stopped breathing in bed or our boobs aren’t painful, swollen rocks leaking little puddles onto the sheets.

But one day, everything settles down into a bit of a routine. You find that you get back some sleep and you start to feel human again. Now’s the fun bit, right? You get to just hang out with this little person, go to the park, long walks in the pram, coffee with other moms and just kicking back while the rest of the world keeps working.

The baby doesn’t need you 24/7 anymore and, in fact, you can start leaving them with other people for short periods. Your brain is starting to work again, slowly. You can even start to hold a decent conversation without either yawning or crying.

Now, I don’t know about other moms out there, but this was about the time I started to get bored. And this was, as a result, where the guilt really started!

I struggled to get up in the morning and focus for the day. Some days, I really found it hard to get motivated to leave the house at all. I felt like I was really cheating the system and just sitting around contributing nothing. I knew all the rhetoric—stay-at-home moms work harder than anyone in the workplace, enjoy the time to yourself and with your baby, they are little for such a short time, blah blah blah.

But I just couldn’t get into it.

I would try and get into being a really present and tuned-in mom. I would sit down and do some kind of really fun and engaging game with him that I had seen on Play School –yeah, this is awesome… look how much fun he’s having… I’m such a good mom, I would think. Then I’d look at the clock. Ten minutes had passed!! I still had the whole rest of the day to fill.

I realized why so many moms join mother’s groups and coffee mornings. It’s just to fill in time and get out of the house so the day goes faster! I’m not really much of a “joiner,” though, so I struggled to turn up for those kinds of things, and as a result, I spent a lot of time on my own slowly going crazy.

The guilt was enormous.

Why wasn’t I enjoying this more? What’s wrong with me that I am not relishing not having to go to work and have boring conversations with people all day about stuff that doesn’t really matter? I mean, after all, isn’t this the most important work you can do?

Well, I didn’t feel important; in fact, I felt like a fraud. Everyone else was out there earning a living and contributing to society, and I was here at home with this beautiful little human I made, bored out of my mind reading board books and playing with teddies all day.

Then one day, someone emailed me asking me to do some part-time work from home.

I resisted at first, feeling a different type of guilt. It was the guilt of admitting to myself that I didn’t really like staying at home. This is much harder guilt to overcome when there is absolutely nothing in life stopping you from enjoying staying at home with your baby.

While you feel like people will judge you if you go back to work and leave bub with someone, you feel equally judged being at home and not really having your head fully into being a mom. I know everyone says that just being with you is all the baby needs, but I really felt like I was completely robbing this kid of having someone around who could actually do fun things that would help his development.

So I hired a nanny and took this job.

The first day I left him, there were tears all around. I was crying at leaving him, he was crying that mommy had ditched him with some complete stranger and the guilt was so intense I could almost taste it.

But then I got in the car, I turned up the music (and my resolve) and I headed into the city. I spent a few hours in meetings where I was briefed about my role, I got to meet a few people, I had a nice lunch and then I sat for a moment in a coffee shop. For the first time in months, I felt pretty happy.

I headed home and walked in to be greeted with the most amazing sight. My little boy was sitting with our nanny, on her lap, playing with a little toy, and she was singing and playing the xylophone. They were having a lovely time.

You could tell just taking one look at this woman that hanging out with kids is her favorite thing to do in life. They had obviously been having a ball. She’d done some foot painting with him, they’d been out for a walk and bought some books at the second-hand shop. She was just glowing with happiness and excitement at having spent a few hours with my son.

And I actually felt a great sense of relief and contentment. From that day on, I was a much happier person and, I think, a much better mom. On the days I wasn’t working, I really loved every second of being with my boy, and on the days I was working, I really loved every second of being on my own. It was as though it took being away from him to make me realize how special it was to actually be with him.

It took me this time to realize that I’m not the sort of person who can stay at home all day with a baby, and that is actually OK. The thing about parenting is that you have to do it the way that works for you.

There’s no right or wrong way to organize your family or to live your life. And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with admitting that you just don’t like not staying at home full-time.

Everyone needs balance, and I actually think it’s really healthy to have your kids get used to being looked after by other people and to understand early on that they really can live without you. And if, at the end of the day, you are a happier, more peaceful person, then that can only make you a better mom as well.

So don’t allow yourself to feel guilt, regardless of what you end up doing. As long as you love your kids and you set up your life so that you are the best person you can be when you are with them, then you are being a good parent. Go out and live life the best way you can and always remember, you are a person in your own right, as well as a mom who loves your kids. There’s no room for any guilt in that sentence!

Advice to New Moms from Moms Who’ve Been There

I'm a Dubai expat mum and I love to tell the funny side of life here and about travelling the world with a young family.Because let’s face it – no matter how well planned your travel journey, its those those funny, quirky moments that appear out of nowhere that create the real memories.

It doesn’t take a parent to notice the scores of empty formula shelves at every retailer across the country, but it rightfully scares those with infants the most. As if supply chain issues weren’t enough, a recall of three specialty formulas earlier in the year has made it increasingly hard to get babies the formula they need––and there’s no end in sight.

A mom recently took to TikTok to share her experience with the shortage, in the midst of obnoxiously high-falutin naysayers downplaying the seriousness. From the front seat of her car, Kayzie Weedman explains: “Let’s talk about the formula shortage that is plaguing the US right now because more people need to know about this. You go to your local Target, your local Walmart, and you think you’re going to get the formula your baby needs? Nope. Shelves are bare. And there are babies who can’t have just any formula that’s on the shelf.”

@heyitskayzie

Excuse my makeup less crying face 🥺 this #formulashortage is so scary. #formulamilk #formulacrisis #formulafeeding #formulafed #fyp #fypシ

♬ original sound – Kayzie Weedman

Weedman then goes on to share an absolutely heartbreaking image of her infant daughter, Palmer, and what happens when she has cows milk. She goes on, “The pharmacist who fills her prescription can’t fill it because they can’t get it; it’s back-ordered six months. And I just have to sit there and stare at empty shelves and not know what I’m going to do next.”

Since sharing the video three days ago, her video has gone viral, amassing more than 1M views, nearly 9,000 comments and more than 8,000 likes. While the immense fear surrounding the formula shortage is very real, the comments on Weedman’s post are a ray of hope.

Moms from all over the country are responding with the availability of the formula Palmer needs in their area, with offers to buy the next time they’re at the store or to buy online and ship to her. The sense of community is overwhelming and positive––a stark contrast to many sentiments being thrown around as parents grapple with the shortage.

Comments like “just start power pumping so you can breastfeed again” or “you should have tried harder at breastfeeding and not given up in the first place” (yes, that was a real Tweet by a man) are flat-out offensive and the epitome of parent-shaming at its finest. With just 25% of infants consuming only breastmilk, it’s fair to say the formula shortage affects the majority of parents, and ignorant sentiments like the ones above have no place in this discussion (or anywhere else).

In the meantime, it looks like a House Oversight panel has finally opened a probe into the situation. The White House has said there is no time frame for resolution, and in response, people have called on President Biden to invoke the Defense Production Act that would allow him to order companies to produce certain goods.

Time will tell as to when we’ll start seeing those formula shelves stock up again. In the meantime, give the formula-feeding mamas in your life a hug and whatever support you can right now––they need it.
