While some kids thrive at free play during recess, others may find playing—or even interacting with their classmates during recess—overwhelming. Enter the Buddy Bench, a bench that some schools are installing to help students feel less alone and isolated. Read on to find out what the Buddy Bench is all about and how you can install one at your school.

So, What Is the Buddy Bench?
The concept is simple: any child sitting on a Buddy Bench indicates to his peers that he would like company. Whether kiddo is feeling overwhelmed, shy or just having an off day, sitting on the bench means he would like someone to talk to or play with.

Raising Money for a Buddy Bench
Girl Scouts recently posted on their Instagram page, a photo of Ariana who used the money she raised selling cookies to buy a Buddy Bench and donate it to her school. A portion of the caption reads, “It’s a piece of playground furniture that has the power to promote inclusion and empathy.”

Ariana joins Christian—and likely countless others—who in 2013 had a buddy bench installed at his Elementary School after hearing about this concept from a school overseas (read more of Christian’s story here).

Buddy Bench Requires Supervision
Carole Lieberman, MD, psychiatrist and author of Lions and Tigers and Terrorists, Oh My! How to Protect Your Child in a Time of Terror opened up to Parents.com. She tells them that “sometimes bullies can take advantage of the vulnerability of the kid who sits down hoping to make a friend. It could be tempting for bullies to make fun of them.” So, if you or your family are passionate about bringing a Buddy Bench to your own school, we suggest speaking with teachers and administration about how best to supervise it.

In light of these parents getting exposed for paying their kids way into college, I feel as though we should discuss 2019 parenting.

First off, we know this stuff happens everywhere. People paying their kids way into things. I just think it’s hilarious that Auntie Becky got caught thinking she’s above the rules of decency and good parenting. Jesse and the Rippers are going to be so disappointed.

In my opinion, our generation of parenting is interesting and maybe we should stop to reflect for a moment.

A few decades ago: No seat belts, no baby gates, latch key kids.. You know the generation that always shrugs and says “We didn’t know.”

Well now we know.

We know how to keep our kids safe. We have great tools to do that.

Yet, just like everything else in humanity, we oversteer the ship.

This generation of parenting thinks that part of their job description is to protect their kids from all pain and failure.

That is indeed the wrong job description.

You are the coach, not their bodyguard.

When a boy from the neighborhood called me a “fat f*cking bag of fart cheese” while playing capture the flag one afternoon. It’s good my parents weren’t there to step in and solve that situation for me.

The stinging on my face with embarrassment. The lack of words to say. The twenty minutes of replaying that moment in my head while sulking on the swing. Coming up with a long lines of witty come backs.

Learning to stand up for myself did not come from my parents standing up for me. It came from the fact that they empowered me and that I did it for myself.

Every time you want to come into a situation and throw haymakers for your kid. Stop and take a breath. Say out loud, “us as parents are the problem.”

Your kid is not yours to control. It is not your job to stop them from ever feeling any pain or rejection.

YOU ARE THE COACH.

Get off the court. Get onto the sidelines and start clapping.

Call time out and have a conversation. Give advice. Talk about a plan.

Nope. Don’t go out onto the court. You can’t lift up your teenage kid to dunk the ball in the middle of the game.

Back to the bench for you. Start clapping.

You are the coach.

You are your kids biggest support! You make game plans. You watch film. You practice with them. You cheer for them louder than anyone in the stands.

But you don’t belong on the court.

If your kid bricks a lay up. You have to watch.

Then start clapping again. Build them up so they can see another opportunity will come.

Get off the court or you will get a technical foul.

My Dad got a lot of technical fouls while I was growing up, but good thing they were actual on the basketball court. Haha. Hi Dad!

You have to be your child’s biggest support, but know where to draw the line.

Don’t go onto the court.

You don’t belong there.

Getting rejected is powerful. Failing is powerful. Even though it’s hard to watch, you can’t steal those moments from your child’s development as a person.

You have to coach them on how to deal with it. How to move on. How to regroup. How to not let those moments crush you or define you.  How to be brave enough to ask for help.

The worst thing you can do is give your kid something they didn’t earn. They will never grow up to be the humans you hoped they’d be.

We are the generation of parents who thinks their job is to do things for their kids.

Please stop doing things for your kids.

Please stop setting up their environment so precisely they don’t get to experience the world.

Life is painful. Life is messy. Life sucks at times.

Watching your kid be in pain can be hard. But that’s where you get all the life lessons. That is where you learn to be resilient. That’s how you learn that this too shall pass.

Don’t worry, you will be right there to cheer for them when they stand back up and brush themselves off.

You will be the loudest person cheering for them.

But get off the court.

Love,

Britt

Steamy bowls of pho, chicken tikka masala burritos, gourmet gelato popsicles and burgers piled high with produce—food halls offer options like these and much, much more. They are the perfect spot for families because they provide a break from meal monotony, offer something for everyone, and just might push the kids to try something new. We’ve gathered 15 of our favorite foodie spots that are totally worth a visit (or two!). See them all below.

Anaheim Packing District – Anaheim, Ca

Originally distributing the citrus fruit for which Orange County was named, the Packing District was converted to a community gathering space a few years ago with two levels of restaurants. Try some made-to-order fish and chips from The Chippy followed by gelato or sorbetto on a stick at Popbar. The chicken sandwiches from Sweetbird never disappoints. You can grab your eats and choose a spot at any of the communal tables or even swing in one of the wooden bench swings on the bottom level. Visiting without the kids? Definitely plan a stop at the super secret speakeasy The Blind Rabbit (if you can find it!).

Fun fact: Griffith Park is over 5 times bigger than NY’s Central Park. With hikes, zoos, museums, beer (!), trains, playgrounds, ponies, golf, a carousel and lots more (all costing very little or nothing at all) it’s time to click through the slideshow and discover a baker’s dozen of the coolest places you just might not have visited in our gigantic urban forest.

We Go Round and Round

Since 1937 this carousel has been giving rides to the children of Los Angeles. Sure, it may be a little rough around the edges after all these years, but the Griffith Park Carousel has something no shiny new carousel can boas—it has history. All 68 of these jumpers are hand-carved and hand-painted. It also has a huge antique band organ that includes moving figurines, detailed woodwork and *loud* music. The carousel is open weekends all year and all week during winter, spring and summer school vacations. Rides are just $2.

Bonus: This is where Disneyland was first imagined. Walt Disney would sit on a bench here and watch his girls ride, every Saturday. Today, Walt’s bench has been moved from Griffith Park to Main Street in Disneyland, and a plaque reads “The actual park bench from Griffith Park Merry-Go-Round in Los Angeles, where Walt Disney first dreamed of Disneyland.”

At Watkins Regional Park in Prince Georges County, you can follow the yellow brick road (literally) to a Wizard of Oz-themed playground that’s guaranteed to have your kids singing, “We’re off to see the Wizard, the wonderful Wizard of Oz!” But don’t take our word for it. This is one fun spot you’ll have to see to believe. Read on to discover this hidden gem.

Somewhere over the rainbow…
As the latest addition to this popular family-fun filled park that features picnicking, trailblazing, camping, mini-golf, mini-train rides, old-fashioned carousel rides, and an animal farm, this super cute playground leaves nothing untouched when it comes to its Wizard of Oz theme. From the yellow brick road that begins at the park’s gates, you’ll walk under a rainbow of colors and pass by wood carvings of the Scarecrow and the Wicked Witch of the West, then make your way to two giant ruby red slipper slides that will have your little ones squealing with delight.

Photo: Kelly B. via Yelp

Lions, and tigers, and bears…oh my!
You can park yourself on a bench near the slippers and watch the kids dart from one colorful piece of equipment to the next. There’s the Emerald City, an enormous green structure with a climbing wall, slides, tunnels and bridges. The kids can explore Uncle Henry and Auntie Em’s barn and wonder through a poppy flower field. They can crawl into colorful Munchkin houses and check out Auntie Emm’s farm house. They can even spend some time in Toto’s dog house. The entire playground is encircled by a rainbow track where kids can run themselves ragged. A swing set is strategically placed to let them swing over the rainbow and back again. It’s a fabulous and fun time for everyone.

Kids who love to swim could care less what the weather forecast is – they’ll ask to take a dip outside even though the skies are gray and the water is ice-cold. So what do you do with your tadpoles now that the rainy season is here? Simple. Grab their swimsuits and check out Tacoma’s newest indoor pool. Open year-round, and heated to a cozy 85 degrees, your crew can get their water fix without freezing their tooshies. Dive in for the deets!

The Recreation Pool
The original pool at People’s Community Center opened in 1979 and remained a part of Tacoma’s Hilltop neighborhood until it permanently closed down in 2008. After undergoing a major reconstruction project, the facility has finally reopened and is quickly becoming the go-to indoor pool for South Sound families. Large floor-to-ceiling windows fill the room with tons of natural light, giving it a nice outdoorsy feel compared to the basement-like atmosphere you get with some indoor pools. It also has a unique L- shaped design that divides the pool into three distinct sections: a shallow area, a current channel and a lap lane area that transforms into two basketball courts and a water-walk play area during open swim sessions.

Splash-tastic Features
Your little ones will feel completely at home in this particularly shallow pool, with depths ranging from two feet in the shallowest part to just over five feet in the deep end. Wide steps give a gradual entry into the spacious kiddie area, and you’ll find the submerged bench around the perimeter is the perfect place for water bugs to practice their jumps from, or where mom and dad can have a seat to watch as the excitement unfolds.

The current channel is like a mini lazy river (minus the tubes) with jets that propel kids around in circles as if they’re spinning on a merry-go-round. The duo basketball hoops are perfect for half-court games, and balls are provided so you don’t have to bring your own. But the big draw for your older kiddos will be the water walking feature (Psst… swimmers must be age 7 or older, plus be at least 5 feet tall or able to pass a swim test to do the walk). Floating disks shaped like lily pads and log rounds create a path for traversing the pool. Kids can try to make their way across using their balance alone, or with the help of a cargo net suspended overhead.

The Spray Pad
Sure to become your little one’s favorite place to play during the cold months ahead, you’ll find Tacoma’s first indoor splash pad is loaded with ground sprays galore and plenty of run-around room for big imaginations to roam free. There are colorful buckets that pour surprise showers and dozens of bubbling geysers to dance around in, but what we love the most about this spray pool is that it’s stationed right next to the pool so you can easily stay close to your little ones while keeping an eye on your older kids who swim.

Have a Swim Party
If you’re hoping to make a big splash for your kiddo’s next birthday, the People’s Pool is offering a sweet deal on party packages through the end of 2016. Prices start at $40 per hour plus admission for parties held during afternoon and evening open swim sessions, and private parties are available Saturdays and Sundays from 4:30 p.m.- 6:30 p.m. starting at $85 per hour. Packages include the use of a large party room located adjacent to the pool and plenty of water fun for everyone.

Good to Know
1. There isn’t a direct walkway between the locker rooms and the pool, but you’ll find three private family restrooms with showers located inside the pool area near the splash pad.

2. Towels are not provided, so be sure to pack some along for your crew.

3. Free lockers are available for guests to use, but you’ll need to bring your own lock to securely store your belongings.

4. In addition to open swim sessions, the facility also offers lessons, exercise classes and lap swim times – no membership necessary.

If you’re not already living the Pearachute lifestyle, which means you have a pass to Chicagoland’s hottest classes for littles, the recently opened pop-up space might sway you to join.  Read on to learn why the sandbox, snacks and silliness now happening in the Pearachute Pop-Up Playroom are worth checking out.

Grab a Toy
Before you can even sign a waiver and take off your child’s shoes, he or she will most likely be checking out the toy-filled shelves.  From train tables to play food, the Pearachute Pop-Up Playroom has something for everyone.  Don’t forget about the giant sandbox – or should we say sandroom- that entertains kids when the weather doesn’t cooperate for a day at the beach.  You can cook up a snack or work on the tool bench along with your little one or take a seat at one of the spots along the window. The space might not be large, but there are plenty of toys to keep kids busy.  If your little one is into entertaining themselves, check the Playroom schedule for open play hours.

Partner Up
Pearachute knows how to do relationships — whether it’s helping out members or collaborating with entertainers and teachers.  By providing a space to hold classes, the Pop-Up Playroom makes it possible for even more classes to be offered, benefitting all of its partners.  Whether your kiddos want to exercise, tap a tune or take up a foreign language, the Playroom can make that happen.   Kids have been spotted boogying down at the Hip Hop Dance Party and belting out songs during Tunes with Tim.

Bring a Crowd
One of the really awesome benefits of having a class in a playroom is that there is plenty to do for siblings who might not be in the groove of that day’s offerings.  Just because bigger brother isn’t up for yoga — no need for others to miss out on the fun — let him play on his own in this safe space. Maybe you want to bring a friend? Everyone is welcome at the Pearachute Playroom.  Non-members can pop into open play for $10 or $15 for a class.  If you get hooked, you can apply that fee to a Pearachute membership. Weekly social events, from picnics to happy hours, will be held so that Pearachute families can get to know each other and plan their next adventure.

Get the Deats
The Pearachute Pop-Up is located in the former Kids Island space in Lincoln Park until September 18. Hours vary daily based on class offerings. If you forget the required socks, they are available for purchase.  There are a few snacks and drinks available for purchase if you or your kids need to refuel.
