The Shop
From brewed cacao and hot chocolate to small batches and bars, Creo offers something for every chocolate lover in the family. A bean-to-bar shop that boasts roasting, cracking, grinding, tempering, molding and packaging their own product, Creo gets its beans from a hand-picked family owned farm in the tropics that works directly with them to create unique flavors that bring back customers again and again.

Some of the littlest members of your family may be too young to make it through a behind-the-scenes peek at how sweets are made, but the tours aren’t the only reason to visit the shop. The warm, inviting environment and friendly staff welcome chocolate fanatics of all ages and your kids will love noshing on their chocolate chip cookies, brownies or any other numbers of goodies while you wash your own down with a pumpkin spice mocha! Creo offers a number of seasonal treats and drinks that provide a perfect way to get toasty and perk up after a crisp fall or winter day.

The Tours
Creo offers a Chocolate Factory Tour, a Make-a-Bar Tour and Chocolate 101 class. Both the Factory and Make-a-Bar tour are perfect for families with children ages 8 and up and provide kids and parents alike with an educational and tasty learning experience. The Chocolate 101 class is for adults only.

Chocolate Factory Tour
You will learn everything you could possibly imagine there is to know about chocolate and more on this in-depth factory tour. It lasts approximately 30 minutes and takes you on an adventure to the cocoa farm in Hacienda Limon, Los Rios, Ecuador where the cacao that is used to in the creation of Creo’s specialty chocolates is grown. Your little cook will find out all about the cacao pod, how it appears after it has ripened and what happens during the fermentation process. Then you will follow the cacao bean through the drying, shipping, storage, sorting and roasting process.

Participants can expect the half hour to be packed with hands-on experiences that allow them to see, touch and smell the bean as it is broken, put through the winnower, ground down to molten chocolate and then aerated in the conche until the perfect flavor is achieved.

You will have plenty of time to ask all of the questions that pop up along the way, and your kids will love venturing behind the counters and into the back rooms where the machinery will captivate their imaginations. All in attendance will be required to wear coverings over their feet and hair nets.

The day your sweet tooth subsides is the day your kids sweet tooth subsides, and frankly, that day is named never. Unfortunately, ice cream and cookies just aren’t healthy enough to have every day. Luckily, the new Frozen Fruit Co. in Santa Monica is the antidote to anti-dessert, because the nothing-but-fruit sweet will scratch everyone’s ice cream itch in a totally healthy way.

Is it Frozen Yogurt?  Sorbet?  Gelato?
If it helps to tell the kids that, go for it.  But truthfully it is like none of the above, with the reason being that it is purely fruit and fruit extracts.  As Porky Pig (who clearly ate more than Frozen Fruit) would say, “That’s all folks.”

Frozen Fruit Co. is exactly and exclusively what the name says it is—frozen fruit, soft served.  Sweetened by either date syrup or natural fruit extracts, where sorbets use a sugar syrup water base and fro-yos do dairy, these afternoon delights deem themselves permissible when your better parenting instincts say no way to another candy covered cup of anything else.

The Final Four
Mastery takes time.  That’s why Michael and Victoria Philippou, who surrendered their law careers in England to pursue a healthy sweet treat option on our sunny shores, knew they were ready to launch when they had nailed four fruit combinations.  The four options are, listed with every last ingredient (because seriously, how often can we do that?), are:

  • Coconut and Cacao (coconut milk, cacao, dates).
  • Raspberry and Orange (raspberries and oranges with apple, pear, and peach extracts).
  • Mango and Strawberry (Alphonso mangoes and strawberries with apple, pear, and peach extracts).
  • Pineapple and Passionfruit (pineapple and passionfruit with apple, pear and peach extracts).

But Stand by for More
But the creativity continues.  Plain strawberry is in the tasting stages (so good with the coconut and cacao, which tastes a lot like a chocolate macaroon) and there are rumors of pumpkin and possibly chocolate mint for the holidays.

Cups, Cones & Orchids
Swirl it all up in a waffle cone or a cup starting at $3.95 for a small.  Mix and match flavors, and add some tasty toppings. Or rather, they’ll swirl, mix and top it for you; unlike the fro-yo spots, no germy hands have breached the sneeze guard to touch everything you’ll taste.  Because while kids love the serve your self, if we’re being health conscious, let’s keep it clean, too.  (Your inner germ-o-phobe is doing the happy dance.)

However you order up, it comes with an edible orchid, which instantly transports you to a tropical beach, even if it’s a frigid (say 65°) LA winter day.

About Those Allergies
Welcome to dessert Nirvana.  All flavors are dairy free, nut free, gluten free, white sugar free, vegan, and soy free.  There are nuts available as toppings, and some toppings do contain soy.  But it’s super easy to steer clear of either and/or both,. For anyone with any allergies or dietary restrictions, straight soft serve fruit is the way to go.

Pretty Is as Tasty Does
The pops of purple and pink and paisley will make any kid feel like they’ve landed at a place that’s been just hanging out waiting for them.

Barstools inside, ceiling to floor windows, and sitting fountain side at any one of their tables is a treat alongside the treat.  Plus, there’s a place to get a kid’s haircut right next door, so if that happens to be on the to-do list, this can even be a “thanks for sitting still” treat.

It Sounds Too Good to Be True, so Parking Must Stink, Right?
Nope. There are a few spots behind the shop and ample metered parking along Montana, but we preferred the free two-hour parking along the residential streets that run perpendicular.  Plenty of time to finish those cones and maybe move on for a little kiddo hair cut or some boutique browsing for mom.

Bottom Line: Feeding Them Well Feels Great
Because when it comes all swirled up in a cone beside an edible flower, they don’t even ask for the artificially colored and flavored, sugar coated other stuff.  Let the kids be the judge.  And by all means help yourself a cone as well.

Back to school is a bittersweet time of year. The kids are getting older and bigger and summer is ending, but also you can say buh-bye to expensive summer camps and extra hot weather. You get back to early bedtimes, but you have to pack lunches again. Well, these inventive LA parents have come up with some big new ideas and products that make the start of the school year sweet and simple.

Philosophie’s New Coconut Butters and Honeys

We’ve been fans of local mom Sophie Jaffe’s line of superfood powder blends for a long time, and her 2 new products are just in time for back to school to make lunch packing a snap. Coming in the same three varieties as the powders (Green, Cacao and Berry) the Malibu made honeys make for a great addition to nutbutter & honey sammies or swirled with some berries into yogurt. The coconut butter makes for a great addition to easy breakfasts like toast or oatmeal, since it contains nutrients like magnesium, potassium, vitamin C, iron, and lauric acid, and is packed with fiber and healthy fats that will keep little brains active and bodies nourished through a long morning at school. And we still adore the original powders that make magnificent morning or lunchtimes smoothies or yogurts. A great lunchbox or afterschool fiber and nutrient filled snack that they’ll gobble is easily made by sprinkling superfood powder on popcorn. You can find tips and recipes for lunch additions (like the popcorn, a superfood berry trail mix, or a green protein bar) on her website.

Sure, we know the Bay bakes up some mean sourdough and that the Dungeness crab is a local specialty, but did you realize that the Bay Area is also home to more than a dozen local chocolate companies? This Valentine’s Day, skip the Snickers in favor of some local cocoa treats. We list a few of our favorites below!

Dandelion Chocolate
Wondering what the bar-to-bean craze is all about? Drop into the Dandelion Chocolate factory in the Mission district to get not only a taste of the good stuff, but some serious education on the art of chocolate making. The folks at Dandelion roast, crack, sort, winnow, grind, conch, and temper small batches of beans before molding and packaging each bar by hand. Don’t come looking for caramel fillings or nougat—these bars are all chocolate and are differentiated by bean origin or cacao percentage. Kids can get a top-notch chocolate education by signing up for on of their free behind-the-scenes tours.

The San Francisco Chocolate Factory
You can spot this little chocolate shop by looking for its whimsical chocolate-themed mural. While there is no factory here anymore, there is a sweet little boutique specializing in locally made chocolate served up in pretty tins and wrappers perfect for gifting. Their tiny tasting discs are ideal for little chocolate lovers who might not know when to say when. For a real treat, slip one of their Milk Lover’s flavored straws into your kiddos lunch for a sweet treat they won’t forget.

Tcho
This modern chocolate company is so San Francisco, and describes itself as a Silicon Valley start up meets San Francisco food culture. They “chocolate engineers” at Tcho are all about innovation, obsessed with quality, and of course are creating the coolest wrapper designs in the local chocolate game—these bars are sure to be a hot with budding foodies.  Originally based along SF’s Embarcadero (where they hosted their popular factory tours), Tcho has since moved to Berkeley and promises that new factory tours will be up and running soon. In the meantime, get your Tcho chocolate fix at their kiosk in Westfield Center.

Ghirardelli
The big guy in town, Ghirardelli has been making chocolate for 160 years, making it the oldest continuously operating chocolate company in the US (take that, Hershey, PA!). And all those bars sporting cacao content percentages? You can thank Ghirardelli, who claims to have started the trend more than a decade ago. Sure, you can pick up the famous confections at most any grocery or drug stores, but why not go for the full Ghirardelli experience: follow the larger-than-life lighted sign to the Bay, pull up a stool, and order a monstrous ice cream sundae dripping with Ghirardelli fudge at the flagship factory.

The Guittard Chocolate Co.
Coming in hot on Ghirardelli’s tale is The Guittard Chocolate Company, which has been locally crafting chocolate in the Bay Area for 145 years. The company started with a little factory on Sansome Street and has since grown into new, sizable digs in Burlingame. Today the fifth generation of the Guittard family is at the helm, and their specialty is still bean-to-bar chocolates of the highest quality. Switch it up and let the kids drink their dessert instead—their drinking chocolate for a truly indulgent way to consume your cocoa.

Ocho Candy
While other bean-to-bar chocolatiers are focused on pure chocolate, Ocho has been busy elevating the classic candy bar to locavore status. The Oakland candy company specializes in addictive chocolate bars in flavors such as caramel and peanut, coconut, peanut butter and mocha, all with no preservatives, additives or artificial flavors. Their new mini bars have debuted just in time, and to make your Valentine gifting easy as pie (coconut chocolate pie that is) just print out these customizable Valentine’s to wrap around your min Ochos and make your sweeties day! Recchiuti Confections
For chocolate as art, look no further than Recchiuti. The company has elevated the chocolate sampler box to its highest form, with flavors such as sesame nougat, sur de lago, and star anise and pink peppercorn. Back when he was just starting out, Michael Recchiuti would visit the San Francisco farmers’ market for bundles of fresh lavender, tarragon and lemon verbena, which he’d dry for use in his signature infusions. Using traditional European techniques and equipment, he created his confections—truffles of the highest order, each shaped or painted into something almost too pretty to eat. While the kids may not dig on the more wild flavors, they will love treasure hunting through the pretty box looking for their favorites, Today you can pick up his treats for the senses at the Recchiuti outpost in the Ferry Building or their Little Nib shop in Dogpatch.

There’s nothing like the mention of a chocolate factory to bring the kid out of you. (Maybe it’s that Willy Wonka Effect). And lucky for D.C. natives and their broods, you don’t have to travel far to feel like Charlie…or Veruca Salt or an Oompa Loompa. Every weekend, Spagnvola Chocolatier in Gaithersburg, Md doles out free factory tours to visitors, highlighting the entire manufacturing process—from start to finish—in kid-friendly lingo. There may not be a goose laying golden eggs, but there are plenty of free tastings along the way.

Get Up Close and Personal with Your Cacao
The tour takes place right on the 1,000 square foot factory floor (p.s. online reservations are recommended). That’s where a guide breaks down everything from  the origin of cacao and the importance of proper farming techniques to the development of fine flavor luxury chocolate and the roasting process. Kids love to see the custom machines in action and trying to figure out how they work. Don’t worry about kiddo getting cacao-ed out—the tour is a quick 25 minutes long (and that’s if there are questions at the end. Hint: the tour guides love questions.

Time to Shop!
After the tour, visitors are lead back to the boutique where there is a full café of offerings, including all chocolate assortments, along with coffee, lattes and gelato. There’s plenty of seating available if you come with a large group, and if kiddo wants to learn more about chocolate making, there’s often a looped documentary playing on the shops TV. Word to the wise: You’ll regret not buying something sweet before hitting the road. Spagnvola’s Bon Bon’s have unique shapes and colors to the outside, which makes them a fave for the little ones. And coming in at a close second for the under-10 set are the chocolate-dipped marshmallows.

Burn Off the Sugar Rush
Spagnvola is located within the kid-complementing Kentlands community of Gaithersburg. There are no less than four parks within walking distance of the chocolate factory, and you’re just a quick car ride away from the Rio, a fam-friendly lakefront destination with walking paths, a large playground, a carousel, train and paddle boats. If kiddo had one too many tour samples, let them run wild at one of these spots before heading home.

Handheld is in. You’ve got your Kindle and your iPhone and your keyless remote, juggling to grab your little one out of her car seat while texting to confirm weekend plans. But what about lunch? That’s where newcomer Kye’s comes in, with the newest healthy alternative to give the sandwich standby a run for its money. Stroll into their sunlit shop in Santa Monica and unwrap an unexpected (and healthy) handheld treat for your toddler’s tastebuds.

With KyeRitos, Super Foods Get Super Convenient
Think of it as a healthy push-up. Start with a crisp sheet of shiny nori, already a fave with your little ones. (Other wrappers are available, too.) Now add kid-friendly fillings that double as healthy nutrition. KyeRitos are the brainchild of owner and local mom (to Kye) Jeanne Cheng (with degrees is traditional and holistic medicine, so you can really trust that this stuff has the goods) who conceived of the taste treat.

Dr. Seuss himself would be intrigued by the Nori N’ Lox resplendent with green eggs, smoked salmon arugula and tomatoes, all neatly wrapped in crisp seaweed.  Fans of old-school ‘wrappers’ can partake of the deli turkey, which reminds you of the classic wrap with a smear of tasty giji aioli for that super-food punch. The secret to the ‘slip wrap’ as they call it is Kye’s patent-pending packaging with a sheath of cellophane to keep the ingredients in and the mess off. And most choices are dairy and gluten-free for sensitive tummies. In fact, Kye’s accommodates every dietary need, from vegan toddlers to Paleo parents to macrobiotic mommies.  Whatever healthy eating plan you’ve committed to for this New Year, Kye’s will help you stick to it.  Happily.

A Super-Food Side With That
Kye’s happy fare continues with kiddo-pleasing beverages like their signature caramelized banana shake: like candy in a cup with no refined sugar (dehydrated cane juice, aka sucanat, does the trick) but a dose of Chinese yam for extra vitamins and coconut milk for enough added energy to chase those ducks at nearby Douglas Park. The avocolada smoothie is a guilt-free mocktail that begs for a mini umbrella. And what LA kids don’t prefer to drink their veggies, especially in a yummy shake?

Healthy Sweets For Picky Petites
No matter how healthy you’re eating, there’s always room for dessert. The brownies of black bean and rich cacao are as moist and rich as any you’ve had, while the chocolate avocado pudding pulls double-duty with omega3s and bioflavinoids in one delectable dish they’ll ask for over and over.  Because dessert is only dessert if it feels like an indulgence, and these do.

You Can Get There From Here
Kye’s in conveniently situated in the center of Montana’s main shopping strip, on the same block the recently-opened NYC fave Pink Chicken. And there’s free parking  behind the restaurant.
Tasty, healthy, kid pleasing and free, easy parking? Now you have no excuses to start the New Year on a healthy note!

If you love kid-friendly cafes that are focused on all things healthy, get ready because you’re about to have a new main squeeze. Real Good Juice Co. just opened in Old Town. The locally owned spot will be your new favorite place to pop in for a sandwich and cold-pressed juice, and treat the kids to a special smoothie. Sometimes there’s even a farm stand out front! Here what you need to know before you go.

What Kids Will Love
Real Good Juice Co. does a real good job of keeping kids happy. Walk in (or wheel in — it’s completely stroller friendly) to the sun-filled space and make yourself at home at a communal table. You’ll want to sit down and relax with a smoothie from the kids’ menu. Choices include “yum yum in your tum tum” (a mix of banana, cacao, almond butter, almond milk and honey) or “mom i want that one” (strawberries, bananas and fresh coconut water). They also offer 10-ounce cold-pressed juices which littles may have a taste for; ingredients include greens, carrots, beets, apples, lemon ginger and coconut water.

For a snack there is dehydrated fruit and granola. But for those really rumbling tummies, try a fun take on toast: It comes topped with homemade almond butter, strawberry-ginger jelly and honey. Or, be adventurous and try the superfood balls (healthy treats of coconut cacao chia dates and sea salt).

Gourmet Fun for Grownups
This spot has you covered for breakfast, lunch or dinner — or just juice, a smoothie or coffee (from Gaslight Roasters!) in between. Reading the menu is a treat in itself because juices have their own “personalities” (try the Juice Springsteen, a “glorious anthem” of celery, apple, kale, swiss chard, dandelion greens, parsley, ginger and lemon). You’ll also get your fill of salads, sandwiches and some fun surprises, like ceviche made with coconut meat instead of seafood.

The chef, Gabe Lara, has foodie cred: He used to be the sous chef at Lula Cafe and a line cook at Nico Osteria. Along with owners Jon Schiff and Gordy Sang, he believes in supporting local farms and uses ingredients from them whenever possible. So berries come from Mick Klug Farm in St. Joseph, Mich., and produce comes from Spence Farm in Fairbury. Green City Market is just up the street, too, and gets tapped whenever possible.

Other Neat-o Perks
You already know that Real Good Juice Co. does more than just juice. It’s also — surprise, surprise — a shop. One wall is like a modern apothecary, where you can buy little luxuries like candles, beach blankets, moisturizer, face wash, water bottles and more. On certain days (check the Facebook page for updates), you might even spot a farm stand out front. (Already, City Farms has been there, selling all sorts of greens.) Another bonus of this family-minded place is that there is a mini potty seat in the bathroom.

While You’re in the Area
Old Town is full of attractions that kids love. Duck into Old Town Aquarium to gaze at tank after tank of colorful fish that come from the oceans of Bali, Japan and beyond. If your sweet tooth gets the better of you, The Fudge Pot is there with homemade truffles, toffee, caramel apples and other goodies. Also make a stop at Chicago History Museum to soak up facts about the Great Chicago Fire, Comiskey Park and popular landmarks. And don’t forget that The Second City is right at the corner of Wells Street and North Avenue, offering kids’ classes and occasional family shows.
