It’s no deep sea mystery that Baltimore’s Inner Harbor is one of the most popular destinations on the East Coast, with the National Aquarium topping the must-see lists of nearly every visitor. And for good reason—with over 20,000 underwater critters, puffin feedings, a 4D Immersion Theater, and more, the aquarium has something that floats everyone’s boat.

Editor’s Note: The aquarium is operating at reduced capacity. You can reserve a timed-entry ticket here. Masks are required for all guests over 2.

national-aquarium-1

Ready, Set, Go!: The aquarium is smack dab in the middle of the Inner Harbor, so there’s no getting around the fact that nearly every day is buzzing with a crowd. But, don’t let that deter you—if you can, just pack up the kids and visit during the week (Monday-Thursday). Go before 11 a.m. or after 3 p.m. for the best experience. If your mission is to make it through the whole museum you’ll want to reserve a few hours.

Getting there: You can take the MARC train to the aquarium. For DMV-ers start at Union Station and take either the Camden or Penn line to the Camden Yards or Penn Station MARC train stops respectively. Expect this to be a brisk one hour ride. It’s a one mile walk from the train station to the aquarium; if that’s more than you bargained for, grab a cab for a quick fare. Driving? Expect a 50 minute to one hour trip from D.C. and Northern Virginia.

Parking: While there is lots of street parking around we recommend the convenient parking one block opposite the aquarium at the Lockwood Place Garage. While it is a hefty $20.00 for the 4 hours with the aquarium validation, its worth not worrying about parking tickets or being towed.

What to see: Arrive before 11 a.m. to start the day off right at Blacktip Reef. The animals are just waking up and starting their day too! More of a night owl? A visit after 3 p.m. lets you experience the animals during a less busy time. A bright area can be found at the Dolphin Discovery area where staff works with the dolphins. Leave time to wander around the Jellies Invasion exhibit, a sweet, quiet spot to really enjoy their beauty.

Editor’s Note: The Dolphin Discovery area is currently closed, but you can purchase a private Dolphin Training Session here

What to skip: If you have smaller kids, they may not be too interested in the guided tours. If you are interested note that they cost extra, and they do sell out quickly.

national-aquarium-3

Possible lunch spots: No outside food, beverages, or gum are permitted. A grab and go cafe and a traditional sandwich and pizza style cafe are located in the building, but there are no sit down and order options available. Our recommendation? Bring a picnic. There are tables and benches (with a view of the harbor!) just outside the Aquarium.

Editor’s Note: Due to COVID, there are no on-site dining options.

Cost: The cost is definitely an investment for a family. Adults 12-64 are $39.95, children 3-12 are $24.95 and infants under 3 are free. Military discounts are available through base ticket offices.

The fine print on wheels: Are you ready to have your salt water bubble bursted? Strollers are NOT permitted in the aquarium. They do however offer the free use of front or back carriers for families with babies and tots.

Take an App-Guided Historical Tour

National Park Service

The Guide to Indigenous DC app takes you on a nine-mile guided tour of some of the Indigenous history of the city. You’ll visit sites where local tribes once had settlements as well as more modern historical sites, such as where key protests against the Dakota Pipeline took place. You’ll also visit the Iwo Jima Memorial in which one of the soldiers is Ira Hayes, member of the Pima tribe – a reference that many tourists (and some locals) overlook.

Visit the Statue of Chief Standing Bear

Architect of the Capitol

Chief Standing Bear’s statue is a recent addition to the National Statuary Hall by the state of Nebraska. In 1878, Chief Standing Bear unintentionally became the first – and possibly least-known – civil rights leader in America when he fought to leave the Reservation he had been forced on to and bury his 16-year-old son on tribal land. His arrest and trial led to a court ruling that Native Americans were people with the same rights as other citizens under the Constitution.

COVID-19 Update: At this time, The Capitol Visitors Center has cancelled all tours. We will update this story when the U.S. Capitol is open to the public again. In the meantime, you can take a virtual tour of the statue here.

Learn About Local Tribes

If you want to learn more about the original inhabitants of the DC area, you can start here. Twelve tribes originally occupied the Capital area; today just 5,000 decedents remain. Many of the tribes that still call this area home maintain websites where you can learn about upcoming events and verify operating hours and fees for ancestral museums and cultural centers. Due to COVID, many annual traditions, like the Howard County Pow-Wow have been cancelled, but you can still catch these performances online

A little research will turn up lots of flowers, trees, and shrubs perfect for this. Let the kids get their hands filthy and absorb some Vitamin D while doing some good for the planet even as you honor those who were here before you.

Fans of Panera’s Broccoli Cheddar Soup and Mac & Cheese won’t have to choose between their two Panera favorites ever again. Today, Panera is pairing these two classic menu items into an entirely new creation – Broccoli Cheddar Mac & Cheese, available now at bakery-cafes nationwide. Since this combination is so irresistible, Panera and two-time Grammy Award Winner Michael Bolton have released a digital short, “When Some Mac Loves Broccoli Cheddar.”

“As the new head Chef at Panera, I am incredibly excited to work with our pantry of fresh, clean ingredients to create delicious new innovations on the Panera menu,” said Claes Petersson, Head Chef and Chief Food & Innovation Officer at Panera. “I’m obsessed with the flavor combination in our new Broccoli Cheddar Mac & Cheese—it’s an insanely craveable and irresistible creation that our customers nationwide are sure to love.”

Broccoli Cheddar Mac & Cheese

Broccoli Cheddar Mac and Cheese is a new recipe from Panera and was developed by combining two distinct cheddar cheese sauces into a singular velvety blend, simmered with a burst of seasoned broccoli florets and julienned carrots. Guests can now order Broccoli Cheddar Mac & Cheese in Panera bakery-cafes nationwide, starting at $5.79 or as part of a You Pick 2 order. Panera Broccoli Cheddar Mac & Cheese is also available in the refrigerated deli area at select grocery retailers nationwide as the newest addition to Panera’s line of cafe-inspired grocery products.

“To celebrate the first-ever mash-up of two iconic Panera menu items coming together in perfect harmony, we knew we had to do something big,” said Eduardo Luz, Chief Brand & Concept Officer at Panera. “The combination of our crowd-pleasing Broccoli Cheddar Soup, with our Mac & Cheese is a true embodiment of Panera’s dedication to delicious food. We felt so passionately about the flavor combination that the love song almost wrote itself, and who better to help us announce to the world than love song legend and Panera superfan, Michael Bolton.”

As with all Panera menu items, new Broccoli Cheddar Mac & Cheese is free from artificial preservatives, sweeteners, flavors, or colors from artificial sources as defined by our No No List.  Guests can order nationwide in Panera bakery-cafes, on Panera’s website, or via the Panera app. If you’re on-the-go or just not quite ready to dine in, you can order via Panera Curbside or contactless Delivery, as Panera continues to take steps to serve our communities safely.

There’s nothing like a new indoor spot just for kids. Lucky for families in the Dallas area, a brand-new interactive toy store has arrived, fresh from New York City, and it should be on your must-do list this winter. Welcome to CAMP, where kids can touch, taste, and play to their heart’s content. This unique experience has something for everyone, even parents (hello, cafe drinks!), so get ready to head to CAMP for an unforgettable day of fun.

What It Is

CAMP is an interactive toy store that fuses rotating hands-on experiences (think mermaid walls, slides and musical bridges) with a toy store that has everything from unique toys you can’t find anywhere else to books, candy, collectibles and even some mainstream licensed products. The coolest part is that every few months, behind the secret door, the exhibits change, so there’s a good chance the whole space will look totally different with each visit.

Why We Love It

Besides the interactive experiences, there are toys everywhere, and kids are encouraged to play, run and basically try out stuff while they’re in the exhibit hall. There’s also a craft area, and there are different projects every day (there’s an extra fee to participate) that run the gamut from holiday-themed fun to classic things like DIY unicorn nightlights. There’s also a cafe with coffee, ice cream from New York legendary creamery Ample Hills, plus, kids get a token upon arrival, which is good for one snack from the Kroger-sponsored snack center.

Where It Is

Located in The Hill shopping center on Walnut Hill Lane, the impressive space is accessible from the North Central Expressway.
