When you're craving the perfect butter shortbread cookie to dip in your coffee or tea, these biscuits from Whole Foods' 365 label are reminiscent of Girl Scout Trefoils for the perfect cookie-beverage pairing. These are made without any peanut products and sweetened with cane sugar.

An 8 oz. box is just $3.99.

Dark Chocolate Toasted Coconut Cookies

Ice Cream Jubilee
Victoria Lai loves ice cream (don’t we all?!!). But she loves it so much that she started experimenting with ice cream and creating fun flavors in her small NYC apartment kitchen eight years ago. She took a break from her corporate law career to pursue her newfound hobby and apprenticed at a pie shop in Brooklyn. Her hobby quickly turned into a passion but would have to remain an evening and weekend pastime as Victoria accepted a presidential appointment at the Department of Homeland Security here in D.C. Despite her dedication to her federal job, Lai couldn’t free herself from the exhilaration that formulating ice cream brought her. She started Ice Cream Jubilee as home tasting parties for friends. Ice Cream Jubilee, which uses all natural cream and milk from a local creamery, has two D.C. area locations. Victoria conceives flavors inspired by her international travels, delicious libations, and Texan upbringing.

When looking for protein bars for kids, seek out protein bars that use whole food ingredients instead of refined sugars and supplemental protein powders such as soy. Keep an eye out for unhealthy ingredients such as hydrogenated oils (trans fats) and keep in mind that these bars shouldn’t exceed 150 calories per serving.

Check the list of ingredients to be on the look out for chemicals and added sugars like corn syrup, glucose, cane sugar and malt syrup.

The best protein bars for kids should provide a healthy balance of protein, fat and carbohydrates, vitamin-and mineral-fortified as well as be both soy-free and low in sugar, providing at least 2.5 grams of dietary fiber. Interestingly, the best protein bars for kids are not designed for kids at all, as those are generally too high in sugar and low in fiber.

It is recommended that you give your kid half a protein bar to avoid having them fill up before a proper meal. This will be enough to satiate them until dinner.

Protein Bars for Kids: Pros & Cons

While protein bars won’t replace a well-balanced meal, they can be a much healthier alternative than fast food and food in vending machines. Although protein bars can be a quick and easy option, there can be some drawbacks to offering protein bars to kids.

A protein bar can come in handy when kids need a quick energy boost after school or during sports practice. It is far better to have kids eat a protein bar than skip a meal entirely.

Although some protein bars may provide a rich supply of nutrients, other bars’ nutritional content may be closer to that of a candy bar, giving kids a quick sugar boost without the important vitamins and minerals necessary to be considered kid friendly protein bars.

Protein Bars vs. Whole Foods

Kids can just as easily meet their daily vitamin and mineral intake by having quick and easy foods that contain whole grains, fruit, vegetables and lean protein.

Most kids would actually benefit more from eating protein-rich foods like lean meats, low-fat dairy, eggs, apples and bananas with peanut butter, whole grain crackers with cheese, homemade trail mix with dried fruit with nuts and seeds and whole grain cereal. Parents should focus on providing their kid with a healthy balance of carbs, protein, fat and greens. An ideal lunch at school may be a salad, a source of protein, milk and a piece of fruit.

Having a diet based around whole foods is important for everyone but especially for growing kids, since they’re learning and establishing patterns that they’ll have to follow or break for the rest of their lives.

Homemade Protein Bars

With a few handy ingredients, you can make your very own batch of homemade low sugar protein bars for kids containing 6 grams of protein per serving. Try using a food processor or blender and stick with healthy ingredients such as creamy nut butters, natural sweeteners, crunchy nuts and dried fruit.

7. Snack Like Old Times
Full of fiber and big on nostalgia, the Whole Wheat Vanilla Animal Cookies from NatureBox are nutritious, delicious and will remind you of your own childhood. These vegan cookies have very little sugar and sodium, and yet they taste just like the ones you grew up eating (which were filled with who knows what). Babies without teeth can gum and suck them so they’re easier to swallow, and littles with chompers can have at them. They come in convenient single-serve packs for perfect portions when you’re around town.

Available at naturebox.com, $5.99 for two 5-oz. packs

8. For Cheese Lovers
These baked cheese puffs by Snikiddy look and taste like a less healthy version of a popular snack, but they are made with non-GMO ingredients and don’t have any artificial colors, preservatives, high fructose corn syrup, trans fats, hydrogenated oils, or MSG. Good for gluten-free babes, they come in two melt-in-your-mouth flavors: Grilled Cheese and Mac n’ Cheese.

Available at target.com, $2.49 for 4 oz. bags.

9. Baby’s First Taste of PB
Peanut butter can be tricky for babies to eat, so here’s an easy, travel-friendly way to get that yummy treat. Crazy Richard’s Pure PB Single Serves are peanut powder packets you can mix with almost anything to get the rich flavor and protein of peanuts. Mash it with a banana, swirl some with breastmilk or formula, or add it to applesauce, yogurt, warm cereal, or a smoothie.

Available at crazyrichards.com, $9.98 for 8 packs.

10. Bowl and Go
Sprouted quinoa, gluten-free oats and super chia seeds. Fill your baby’s belly with the good stuff, right? The grab-and-go breakfast-inspired Happy Tot Super Morning Bowls have all the ingredients needed to make a snack satisfying, plus fiber and Omega-3 (ALA). And who says oatmeal has to be hot? You can add cool or room-temperature water on the go and help your little one eat it anywhere. Choose from two flavors: organic bananas and strawberries, and organic apples and blueberries.

Available at amazon.com, $25.13 for 8 bowls.

11. The Snack That Gives Back
It can be tough getting littles to eat quinoa, but these 100% Quinoa Squares from NurturMe make it much easier. The ancient grain-based organic snacks have zero common allergens – like gluten, dairy, soy, and egg – that can make tiny bellies turn. Plus, they’re packed with probiotics and all nine essential amino acids for good digestive function. Choose from banana and broccoli; pineapple and spinach; and sweet potato, apple, and cinnamon, and watch your little one gobble up the easily dissolvable puffed crackers. A portion of proceeds goes to the children of the cooperative farming communities in Peru where NuturMe sources its organic fair-trade quinoa.

Available at nuturme.com, $3.99 for 1.75 oz. bag.

12. The Sweetest Treat
What do you do when you want to share a treat with your kid that’s not a big, bad cookie? HannahMax Cookie Chips hit the sweet spot without going overboard. They’re thin and crispy but still taste like the chocolate chip cookies you love so much. Made with creamery butter, cage-free eggs and pure cane sugar and free of artificial flavors, ingredients or GMOs, these snacks are good for littles with teeth so they can bite off and chew little chunks. And you can give your kiddo 3 or 4 cookies for less than 100 calories, so they won’t fill up on these snacks. Then just gobble up the rest yourself!

Available at amazon.com, $15.96 for 4 bags.
