Known for an eclectic assortment of candy (think Rosé All Day and Champagne gummy bears), Sugarfina is THE luxe sweet shop. Now the confectioner extraordinaire is bringing us sugary, caffeinated goodness!

Infused with Alfred’s classic blends, these bears are the sweet little pick-me-up you’re looking for. But one word of caution—these candies are not for the littles. Along with tasting like your fave fresh brew, the gummies also contain actual caffeine. Good for you, not so good for your already energetic tot. So keep your stash in a mama-only space.

Not only are caffeinated gummies one of the most genius ideas ideas ever—these bears are absolutely aww-dorable. The candy comes in coffee bean-like bags, mini coffee cups and coffee tumblers, featuring flavors such as Iced Vanilla Latte, Cold Brew and Bourbon Cold Brew. And yes, the Bourbon Cold Brew Bears are made with a splash of real bourbon.

The caffeinated bears are available in select retail locations and online at sugarfina.com and alfred.la. You can also enter to win an Alfred and Sugarfina Collection “Coffee Break” of Cold Brew Bears for your office now through Apr. 29! Visit Sugarfina’s website to fill out a “Coffee Break” entry form for your chance to score a slew of these grown-up gummies.

What’s better than a Disneyland Princess Breakfast? Starting Mar. 30, visitors to the Napa Rose restaurant at the Grand Californian can get the chance to dine with these Disney divas—and eat a three-course meal!

So what does this all-new dining experience have in store for princess fans? In addition to royal meet-and-greets, guests will be treated to sparkling beverages (and yes, that includes champagne for the grown-ups), storytelling and so much more.

Not only does this experience bring the Disney Princesses to their biggest of little fans, it also showcases the princesses beyond just their looks. According to the Disney Parks Blog, “Princesses will share the moments they felt empowered to be their true selves. Mulan may encourage children to strike a pose to discover their own inner warrior, while Rapunzel may share how she felt when she found the courage to explore the world outside her tower, showing little ones how to spin joyfully and shout, ‘Best day ever!'”

If you’re planning a trip to Disneyland this spring, you’ll want to book your Disney Princess Breakfast Adventure reservations now. Breakfast Adventure hours are Thursday through Monday 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. Visit the Disneyland website or call 714-781-DINE for reservations.

Where Can You Buy Girl Scout Cookies This Year? Cookie Season Has Arrived

Where to Get Valentine’s Day Candy Conversation Hearts Since NECCO Is No More

For me, the magic of the holiday season has so much to do with tradition—keeping the old ones alive and creating new traditions. Ever since I became a mom, the magic of Christmas has felt fresh to me again, and I love experiencing everything through my kids’ eyes. Christmas memories still remain some of my favorite from my own childhood, and there are a few traditions we’re replicating this year and a couple of new ones we’re adding, too!

Classic Holiday Traditions We’ll Always Celebrate

Going to the Big Apple Circus

One of my favorite traditions growing up was going to the Big Apple Circus during Christmas time as a family. This year I went on StubHub’s holiday site and found tickets to the Big Apple Circus for Christmas Day. I’m going to surprise my kids on Christmas morning and take them into the city later that day.

To make the gift as exciting to unwrap as it is to attend, I will pair the tickets with a beautiful glass ornament of a circus animal, red clown noses and circus peanuts.

Letting the Kids Pick Toys to Donate to Children in Need

There was always a huge emphasis on giving back when I was growing up, and the holiday season was no different. Each year around Christmas, my mom would have us go through our clothes and toys and choose some to donate to less fortunate children. They always had to be in tip-top shape as well—nothing broken or worn out.

This was a great way to place focus on the true meaning of Christmas, while also clearing out room for the gifts that Santa would bring. I love this tradition, and now each year I have my kids select five toys each to give away.

New Holiday Traditions We’re Adding This Year

Elf on the Shelf

We never had one growing up, but I can’t help but love this adorable Christmas tradition—and my kids do too! It’s fun to come up with creative ways for our kids to find Berry (our Elf) in the morning, and I gotta say I ADORE having a little bit of a Positive Christmas Behavior reinforcer who sits on my mantle every day “threatening” my kids, LOL. Berry has only been with us a few weeks and already she has stopped multiple tantrums mid-scream. If that’s not a Christmas miracle, I don’t know what is!

Giving Experience Gifts

Sometimes getting inspired to buy something special for your loved ones during the holiday season can be overwhelming: how do you pick something that will truly stand out and not gather dust in the corner after a couple of months? The past few years I’ve been giving experiences for Christmas, and this year I’m giving live events to some of my nearest and dearest.

I went on StubHub and I’m giving my husband tickets to see Hamilton, which is finally going on a U.S. tour! Along with the tickets, I am going to give him a copy of one of my favorite books, Howard Zinn’s A People’s History Of The United States, a journal, pen and a copy of the Hamilton soundtrack so we can memorize all the songs before we go!

We live just outside NYC and there is nothing more chic or bucket list than the New York Philharmonic! I am gifting my in-laws and parents four tickets (so we can go to), packaged in an ice bucket with a bottle of champagne, two glasses and some thematic ornaments for extra sparkle.

Happy Holidays all, I hope you enjoy some old and new traditions this year.

Expecting? Looking for an intimate, unique spot to host a baby shower? Think there’s a diva (or divo) on the way? Check out The Love Shack, an unconventional, high-glam space that also happens to bill itself as a “life-size dollhouse.”

photo: The Love Shack

Built on Love
The Love Shack was first envisioned in 2009 by Alexander (a photographer, video editor and furniture designer — um, check this out), and Britta Love when the newly-engaged couple decided to move from London to NYC. (Yes, that’s their real surname.) Three years later, a ‘little palace in Brooklyn’, as they like to call it, was born. Working together, this couple transformed an abandoned industrial building in Bushwick into two, life-size dollhouses.

photo: The Love Shack

The “Palace”: Live, Work, Love
Here’s the deal: The Love Shack serves as the Love’s permanent home and studio, but they are happy to rent it out for small, special events such as baby showers. They consider it, “an experiment in the possibilities of loft living, surreality and commercial space.”

The Lovely Perks of the Space
The Love Shack features an outdoor garden with patio umbrellas, a working domestic kitchen, two bedrooms, an intimate library space and an unexpected “indoor balcony” perfect for a toast.

Despite its size, the 1,000-square-foot loft still feels spacious with its white walls and high ceilings. Almost all the furniture or light fixtures are original creations, so the overall aesthetic of the space is playful, funky and elegant.  And even though it’s located steps from the streets of Bushwick, The Love Shack feels like a tranquil escape.

How to Plan for a Shower at the Love Shack
The hourly rate for booking The Love Shack depends on when you’d like to host your party. The hourly rate for daytime events is $175/hour, while evening affairs run $200/hour. (The hourly rates apply to set-up and clean-up time, not just festivities, so plan accordingly.) The Loves recommend booking the Love Shack 6-8 weeks ahead of time, although showers have been booked much shorter notice. (Email is the preferred form of contact; get in touch at Britta@LoveTheLoveShack.com)

There is no catering or service staff provided on-site, but you are welcome to hire in catering or use the full kitchen. Champagne flutes, wine glasses and tumblers rental available upon request.

The Love Shack is a relatively small space so the average guest list is 20-30 people with a maximum capacity of 50 people.

photo: The Love Shack

Bells & Whistles & Cats
The Love Shack also includes a full sound system, chandelier and lamp dimmers to adjust for your desired ambiance, and three very friendly (and mostly sleeping) cats. An air purifier runs 24/7 to remove any dander from the air, so allergens have not posed a problem for attendees thus far.

The Love Shack is predominately rented for baby and bridal showers, but occasionally holds first-year birthday parties and other photographic events upon request.

Whether you call it a macaron or a macaroon, you don’t have to fly all the way to Paris to indulge in this latest French desert trend. Located in Kirkland, Lady Yum serves up a colorful assortment of macarons in crowd-pleasing flavors like chocolate, strawberry and mint chocolate chip along with more unusual pairings like mango-habanero and maple-bacon. But the macarons are not the only showstoppers on the menu. Read on for the sweet details.

The Story Behind the Business
Starting off as a custom dessert business out of her home kitchen, owner Megan Gordon made her dream come true. Thanks to hard work, a knack for perfecting a difficult cookie, and a clever Kickstarter campaign, Megan was able to expand her business to a new store front in the heart of downtown Kirkland, where her perfect macarons are now available to the masses.

photo: Danielle Fernandez

Take ‘Em or Leave ‘Em
Perfect for an afternoon date with your l’enfant, Lady Yum serves up several kid-friendly macaron flavors; chocolate, s’mores, PB&J, strawberry and mint chocolate chip are just a few of the more popular choices amongst the younger crowd. Take the fun a bit further in your afternoon adventure and treat the minis to a “Sophia” – sparkling cider or water served up in a tiny wine glass. What could be more fun than eating fancy cookies and drinking from a special glass? Better yet, Lady Yum is just begging for you to take your friends here for an opulent Moms Night Out. Catch up with friends over a generous pour of champagne and these perfectly airy macarons (make sure to try the salted caramel and pear ginger cardamom) amongst the historic brick and warm glow of beautiful chandeliers. Bring the kids home a box of macarons and everyone is a winner!

photo: Danielle Fernandez

Wake Up Your Tastebuds
While macarons are the star of the show, Lady Yum also serves up one of the hottest new beverage crazes, Shrubs. This refreshing cocktail of flavored sipping vinegars made by local company Sweet Carolines and champagne (or sparkling water) is the perfect  pairing with sweet macarons. Pick from flavors such as Nectarine White Balsamic Vanilla, Fig and Honey or Rhubarb Ginger Peppercorn. Sounds weird, but it’s an absolutely perfect combination of sweet and tangy topped off with bubbles!

photo: Danielle Fernandez

Keepin’ It Local
Gordon is all about supporting her fellow local entrepreneurs and the small business community that surrounds her. All products in her store (with the exception of some wines) are sourced from either Washington or Oregon. Gordon even utilizes her featured local products in many of her macaron flavors. Psst… Look for local artisan treats such as jams, caramels, and toffee lining the store’s shelves.

Beyond Macaroons
While Lady Yum is working on creating new savory macaron flavors (think Smoked Salmon & Sesame, Red Pepper & Goat Cheese and Fig & Bleu Cheese) there are other options available on the menu if you want some nourishment to go with your sweet and bubbly. Try a mini quiche from WaWa Cakes, or a salad from Molly’s to complete your afternoon voyage to Paris er Kirkland. You will also find more than just macarons to satisfy your sweet tooth; holiday-themed treats of cake pops and cookies as well as chocolate covered marshmallows are often available.

Treats All Week
Need a mid-week pick-me-up? Tuesdays are all you can drink champagne and shrubs for $15. This gives you plenty of opportunity to try all of those unique flavor combinations. Or come in for a free macaron on Thursdays when you purchase a glass of wine or champagne. Check out Lady Yum’s Facebook page for more reasons to indulge.

Spread the Yum
Don’t have time to stay? Lady Yum offers many options of beautifully packaged macaron boxes to take home, or wine “to go.” Be the biggest hit at your next tailgate with the 12th Man vanilla bean macaron or make your child’s party the talk of the neighborhood by having Lady Yum create a custom dessert table. If there’s one thing your kiddo is passionate about, it’s ice cream. And sure enough — there’s always one flavor he or she really screams for. What does your kid’s favorite flavor say about them? You’re about to find out. In the spirit of making every last lick more fun, we did an unscientific study (aka: we totally made all of this up) and give you the scoop.

The Flavor: Rocky Road
What Your Kid is Saying: “I’m not afraid of anything. Bungee jumping? Bring it on! Off-roading? Yes, please. Skydiving? Of course. Well, wait — I’m not old enough for any of those things. So until I am, just check me out on the playground. I’m pretty good at scooting from the sandbox to the tube slide. And did you see my latest monkey-bar stunt?”

The Flavor: Blue Moon
What Your Kid is Saying: “I’m a dreamer … a regular ol’ Captain Imagination. Sometimes, I think that clouds are made of cotton candy and that my teddy bear whispers me secrets at night. My future career is acting, so look for me on Broadway — or, for the time being, serenading strangers in the grocery store.”

photo credit: Steven Depolo via Flickr

The Flavor: Coffee
What Your Kid is Saying: “I’m seven going on 37. I have champagne tastes on a $1/week allowance budget. Also, I want to be just like Mom and Dad, and I know coffee is what makes them actually get up in the morning and move around the house and stuff like that.”

photo credit: Vegan Baking via Flickr

The Flavor: Cherry Garcia
What Your Kid is Saying: “Sometimes when I hear my grandparents talk about this festival called Woodstork or something, I think, oh man, that sounds like so much fun and I could totally wear a tie-dye T-shirt every day, and then they play a band called The Graceful Dad but I don’t know if the guy singing was even a real dad or what, but I heard he had a beard like Santa and was as popular as Justin Bieber. Anyway, I’ll eat his ice cream because I’d be silly to say no to fudge.”

The Flavor: Rainbow Sherbet
What Your Kid is Saying: “It’s too hard to pick just one color. Duh.”

photo credit: Ruth Hartnup via Flickr

The Flavor: Mint Chocolate Chip
What Your Kid Is Saying: “I am a Renaissance kid. I love the classics and am a bit old-fashioned. If you ask me to play Minecraft, I may say, ‘No thanks, I’m racing slot cars.’ If you offer me an iPhone, I will stick to my walkie talkie. If you suggest an IMAX movie, I will say, ‘Oh, I’m quite happy with my View-Master, thank you very much.’ Oh, wait — hold up. Who am I kidding? I just like chocolate chips.”

photo credit: Joshua Kirby via Flickr

The Flavor: Vanilla
What Your Kid is Saying: “Please don’t ask me why I’m just ordering vanilla. Please don’t ask me why I’m just ordering vanilla. Please don’t ask me why I’m just ordering vanilla …”

photo credit: Jeremy Tarling via Flickr

The Flavor: Bubble gum
What Your Kid is Saying: “You know Pharrell? I’m like him — happy. Smiling is my favorite.”

photo credit: Danielle Elder via Flickr

The Flavor: Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
What Your Kid is Saying: “I don’t need anything too fancy. Remember how I walked away when you took me to that gelato place? One tub of this and I’m good for the day. What do you mean it doesn’t count as dinner?”

The Flavor: Ice cream sandwich
What Your Kid is Saying: “Ha-HA! Tricked you! You thought I only liked ice cream by the scoop. Oooh, no. I’ll take my dessert any way I can get it — especially if it means I can go running out to the ice cream man.”

Instead of a store-bought card and a handful of roses, why not treat Mom to some delightful comestibles and luxurious pampering this Sunday? And what better place to treat Mother on her day than along or near the shores of Lake Tahoe?

To get a good start on the day, you need a hearty breakfast, and several area restaurants are offering Mother’s Day special brunches.

Take, for instance, the extensive Champagne brunch menu at the Edgewood golf course clubhouse in South Lake. All morning and into early afternoon, they’ll be serving up a variety of salads, seafoods, breakfast staples and a host of other entrees. The cost is $39.50 for adults and $14.95 for kids 4 to 10.
