Based on the best-selling young adult book by Eoin Colfer, Artemis Fowl delivers a big cinema-sized experience for audiences of all ages to experience for the first time on Disney+ in the comfort of their homes.  From director Kenneth Branagh, it is a fantastical epic adventure, resplendent with beautiful landscapes and spectacular visual effects that will transport viewers to magical new worlds. Artemis Fowl

Branagh said, “Artemis Fowl is a true original. In challenging times, a twelve year old criminal mastermind is one heck of a travelling  companion. Smart, funny, and cool as mustard, he’ll take you to new worlds, meet unforgettable characters, and mix magic with mayhem. His own family is everything to him, and (although he’d never admit it), he’d be as proud as I am that families around the world will now be able to enjoy his first amazing screen adventures together, on Disney +.”

Warm summer days are gleefully upon us, which also means there are days where refuge will be needed when temps hit sweltering. When you want a time out from the elements—or just a cabin fever reprieve—head to the cinema. These theaters are known to be extra family friendly. (Translation: Nobody will be upset when you show up with your mom-tourage).

Tivoli Theatre
Why We Like Them: Overall value and old-timey simplicity

The best movie value is Tivoli Theatre, which is just one of the equally-swell 14 suburban theaters owned by Classic Cinemas. Inexpensive ticket prices and free refills on all drinks and popcorn keep cinema outings affordable for families. Customer experience is the priority, and it shows in the way employees seem to appreciate every person who walks in the door and every dollar spent. They also have an organ performance every Friday and Saturday evening 30 minutes before the last two showtimes.

Kick off summer mornings with the $1 Wednesday Morning Movie Series, running June 5 through August 7, at all Classic Cinema theaters. Employees dress as popular characters and facilitate games in the lobby prior to the 10 a.m. show time of a family-friendly flick.

Davis Theater
Why We Like Them: Long live the street-front theaters!

Feel like you live in a small town, for just a few hours, while nestled in the big city. The simplicity and friendly atmosphere of Davis Theater is what makes the Lincoln Square mainstay special. A renovation in 2016 didn’t strip away any of the charm and this neighborhood favorite is now making homemade caramel and cheese popcorn, along with other fun flavors. A few times around the block and you can usually find street parking. No messing with garages or trekking down long hallways to get to the show. It’s great for parents who want their kids to experience movies the old-fashioned way, without all the flash of newer theaters.

Showplace Icon Theater
Why We Like Them: Nap-worthy reserved seating, it anchors a pretty cool shopping development and, oh, that popcorn!

Calling all bacon lovers! The bacon-flavored popcorn is reason enough for you to try this South Loop movie palace. Sample the selection of popcorn salts or ditch the popcorn altogether for a brownie in a skillet.

Showcase offers guests reserved seating. This is fabulous news for parents, as you no longer need to fret about arriving early to secure prime viewing space. It’s not just any reserved seating, either: It’s leather, comfortable, spacious and your three-year-old won’t get scrunched in the usual folding chair.

Facets
Why We Like Them: They bring us the annual Chicago International Children’s Film Fest and their birthday parties are a blast!

We absolutely cannot have a list of favorite Chicago theaters without mentioning Facets. Not only can you host a memorable birthday party for your kids, they host film camps and bring us the annual children’s film fest (in it’s 36th year!) that was the first to be recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which means films screened at CICFF can go on to win Oscars®.

No matter your kiddo’s film interest, you’re bound to find something that peaks their interest—animated features, child-produced shorts, documentary short films, live-action features and more! (Even some that will appeal to the teens in your house.) Keep on eye on their schedule and support this neighborhood gem.

Studio Movie GrillI
Why We Like Them: In-movie food/drink service and lots of personal space

Hello, food heaven. The in-movie food service puts the end to days of you attempting to corral your kiddos toward the theater while juggling their drinks, popcorn and candy.  Just sit back, relax and let the food come to you. As an added bonus for parents, the extensive menu includes alcoholic bevvies.

Seats are equipped with built-in trays. And with the leg room this theater offers, you won’t have to worry about getting the stink-eye from the person in front of you; your precious has no chance of kicking their seat.

For families with kids with special needs, SMG offers family friendly movie showings where the lights are turned up and the volume is lowered and kids are free to move around, talk and even dance in the aisles. Check their website for details.

AMC River East 21
Why We Like Them: Special movie showing options for kids with special needs

AMC has partnered with the Autism Society to offer unique movie showings where lights are brighter, sound is minimized and the kiddos can dance, walk or sing in the aisles. Their Sensory Friendly Film program is available on the second and fourth Saturday (family-friendly) and Tuesday evenings (mature audiences) of every month. They also offer assistive moviegoing options for those with hearing and vision impairments.

15 Things Every New D.C. Mom Needs to Know

Seattle has really stepped up its movie theater game. From electric-powered reclining chairs and seat-side service, to family-friendly fests and $1 screenings, going to the movies isn’t just reserved for date nights anymore. If you’re ready to graduate your brood from Netflix and Prime Video to a full-fledged movie theater experience, we’ve put together a list of the city’s best movie theaters that cater to families. Read on!

IMAX Theaters at Pacific Science Center

Don’t feel guilty about skipping the exhibits at the Pacific Science Center and just visiting to catch a movie at their theater featuring a screen that’s six-stories high. It can be a little daunting for little ones to climb the super steep stairs to find a seat, but once you’re settled in and the movie begins, they’ll relax pretty quickly. The Pacific Science Center has two state-of-the-art IMAX theaters that show both educational documentaries and popular new release films–usually a mix of the two are playing at any given time. Be sure to check their website for details on current shows and even purchase tickets in advance.

Lincoln Square Cinemas’ Mommy & Me Movies

Located at The Bellevue Collection, parents on the Eastside love Mommy & Me movies at Lincoln Square Cinemas. (Despite its name, dads are invited too!) Starting at 10 a.m., the theater offers three different movies that allow moms and dads to enjoy first-run movies without worrying that their infant or young child will be disturbing anyone else. Psst…many of these movies are not kid-friendly, but your one-year-old probably won’t be paying attention anyway. Strollers are accepted and encouraged, the lighting is set at half level so you can attend to your little one while you watch and the volume is set lower as well. The movies vary from week to week, so check their website or call to find out what is playing this week. Movies prices are set at matinee prices (currently $9.50/ticket) and often, the theater will offer concession delivery right to your seat (depending on that day’s staffing.)

Central Cinema also offers a variety of family-friendly films each month and delish concessions like freshly-made pizzas, salads and sandwiches.

AMC Sensory-Friendly Movies

Partnering with the Autism Society, AMC offers unique movie showings where they turn the lights up, and turn the sound down, so you can get up, dance, walk, shout or sing! The Sensory-Friendly and Family-Friendly Film program is available on the second and fourth Saturday of every month. Please check your local theater listings for specific showtimes. Find an AMC Theatre here.

Cheap Summer Movies

Two local theater chains offer special discounts on kid-friendly movies all summer long. Regal Cineama offers its super-popular Summer Movie Express and Cinemark offers its Summer Movie Clubhouse. Many of these movies are just $1 and often come with concession specials. The only downside? You have to wait until summer to take advantage!

Family Film Festivals to Put on Your Radar

Each year, Seattle plays host to two awesome film fests. In late January, the Northwest Film Forum hosts the Children’s Film Festival Seattle, the largest and most respected film festival on the West Coast dedicated to children and their families. During the two-week extravaganza, you and your crew can see more than 146 short and feature films that represent more than 39 countries and languages and participate in workshops, pre-and post-film discussions, special events and encounters with filmmakers. Then in May, the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF) features over 400 features, short films and documentaries that have been scooped up from all other world along with a special group of films called Films4Families, perfect for all ages. Tickets usually go on sale months before the festivals start and feature Early Bird specials. Check their websites for show times, ticket prices and more info.

With the big-screen debut of the much anticipated Disney reboot a mere few months away, The Lion King clip shown recently at CinemaCon made major movie waves. As we all not-so-patiently wait for the live-action debut, Disney teased the film with almost five minutes of new flick.

So what secrets did the new footage spill? If you’ve had the original animated feature on an endless replay cycle, you pretty much know how the story plays out. And like the 1994 animated predecessor, the live-action version retells the story, but in a gorgeous new way.

Unfortunately, Disney’s presentation at CinemaCon was closed and the footage embargoed, which means there’s no footage for fans just yet—but reviews on social media and YouTube from attendees of the presentation all collectively agreed that the CGI for the film is beyond impressive.

All we have to go on for now is The Lion King teaser trailer released last fall, for a glimpse of what’s to come:

Jon Favreau directs and James Earl Jones, Donald Glover, Beyoncé, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Seth Rogan star in the updated classic. Disney’s live-action The Lion King hits theaters Jul. 19.

Heading to the movies is a special treat for most families, but it can be stressful for littles to abide by traditional movie theater etiquette. For children with special needs, the challenge can be even more difficult––but not anymore!

As part of Regal Cinema’s My Way Matinee program which offers sensory-friendly movie screenings, guests can catch a screening of Paramount Picture’s Wonder Park on Saturday, Mar. 23 for just $6.50 at select theaters!

Regal Cinemas states that the program allows guests to “express themselves by singing, crying, dancing, walking around, talking or shouting while enjoying Hollywood’s latest films.” Participating theaters turn up the lights and turn down the volume to make the experience more sensory-friendly.

Showings are every second and fourth Saturday of the month and start at 10:30 a.m. You can enjoy tickets for just $6.50, but be sure to check out the My Way Matinee website to see if your local theater participates in the program.
