Get ready for lots of spooky fun with Freeform’s 31 Nights of Halloween

With September wrapping up, it’s time to officially get in the Halloween spirit with lots of spooky shows and films. Freeform’s 31 Nights of Halloween is here for all your creepy, crawly needs.

The network’s annual event starts Oct. 1 and includes lots of kid-friendly picks as well as scarier options for when the kids are in bed (we see you, A Quiet Place).

Need an activity that doubles as a learning moment? Writing a limerick is actually simple when you learn the basics of its structure and it’s an excellent way to practice rhyming words with kids. While the origin of the limerick is unknown, many people believe it refers back to an Irish soldier’s song, “Will You Come Up to Limerick?”. Read on to get the simple tutorial on writing your own limerick with the kids!

1. Rhyme Time

A limerick has five lines.
The first, second and fifth lines all rhyme with each other.
The third and fourth lines rhyme with each other.

  1. To
  2. Who
  3. Lock
  4. Stock
  5. Glue

2. Feel the Beat

The first, second and fifth lines (which all rhyme with each other) have the same rhythmic pattern:

Ba dum ba da dum da da dum (8 syllables)

The third and fourth lines (which rhyme with one another) have this pattern:

Ba dum ba da dum (five syllables)

3. Try it out

  1. There once was a kid who was sad
    (Ba dum ba da dum da da dum)
  2. He made up a lie to his dad
    (Ba dum ba da dum da da dum)
  3. His pop knew the trick
    (ba dum ba da dum)
  4. And called it out quick
    (ba dum ba da dum)

4. Get creative!

The House and Garden at Filoli are impressive and stately throughout the year but transform into a whimsical, wintry wonderland during the holidays, making it worth a special visit. In addition to themed nights and Santa visits, your dilemma lies in this: will your family visit during the day for bright pictures or at night for the dazzling lights? We went to both to get the scoop and hopefully help you decide so read on and book your time slot today!

Daytime Visit

For both visits, we bypassed the House and headed straight towards the Gardens (continue past the House and make a left).This lets kids run and roam and get the wiggles out before touring the House where it's decidedly harder to run and roam. If your family is feeling frisky, consider taking the one mile estate trail for a short hike. Filoli’s family guide is also a great interactive option for kids to play Bingo around the estate.

Next, wander the gardens by the pool and restrain little ones that might try to sneak in for a dip which is most definitely frowned upon. Find the massive Christmas tree in the circular hedges for a photo op then check out the trio of trees inside the Garden House. If you visit the charming Clock Tower gift shop, beware that it harbors a plethora of fragile ornaments so you’ll want to keep curious little hands close by.

With its decadent holiday decorations, The House offers a glimpse into what life was like for the Bourn Family: lavish. Keep kids engaged by searching for statues of Toto, the family’s bulldog and also by counting how many Christmas trees they see (hint: 20). The main draw of the House is the Ballroom with its colossal fireplace—kids will ooh and ahh over the expansive room with its vaulted ceilings and larger-than-life Christmas tree. 

Nighttime Visit

 

The sun slipping behind the Santa Cruz mountains is cue for Filoli’s holiday magic to unfurl. Sparkling lights strung from trees and amongst flowers enchant the garden as far as the eye can see. Gleaming orbs of lights rest on manicured lawns while a weeping willow of lights will enthrall kids of all ages.  A bed of blue lights shimmers to mimic water gushing down a river as the reflection pool glistens with the surrounding lights and provides quiet solace for a moment to take a deep breath… and take it all in. 

Good to know

  • We loved sipping hot cocoa and cider at the Woodland Lawn Court in front of the fire pits (evenings only)
  • Outside food for picnicking is allowed in designated areas only
  • During a daytime visit, consider taking your picnic down the road to the scenic Pulgas Water temple 

Bottom line: if you can only visit once, a nighttime visit is undoubtedly our choice

"I keep a "mobile unit" in the back of my car. Essentially, it's filled with literally ANYTHING we could possibly need so we can dash out in a moment's notice. If we are running late for school, I can grab from these bins in the parking lot. Items in the back include everything from an extra pair of shoes, a change of clothes, a thin jacket or sweatshirt, snacks, etc (for each kid). "I bought each kid an alarm clock so they can set it and learn time management and be responsible for waking themselves up. Start the morning routine a week before school, so their body clock acclimates to getting up early. It also helps a ton to pick out outfits the night before- especially for tween girls!"  –Beth S.

What happens when you lock top pastry chefs into a deserted Hersheypark? A brand new chocolatey show for the whole family! Chocolate Meltdown: Hershey’s After Dark is coming to a screen near you on September 27 and it’s part of the Food Network’s biggest Halloween lineup yet.

Hosted by Sunny Anderson, chefs will compete to create amazing chocolate showpieces over four episodes. The twist? The competitors also have to solve clues, brave Hersheypark’s rides and use Hershey’s sweets for their creations. The episodes clock in at an hour long and the judges are Ralph Attanasia (Food Network’s Buddy vs. Duff) and Maneet Chauhan (Winner, Tournament of Champions).

In a recent Instagram poll, I asked this question: “Are you feeling stressed and anxious—now, more than ever”? 97% of teen respondents said, “YES”!

Am I surprised? No way. Am I curious what a teen girl’s world is like now that everything has changed? You bet.

I decided to ask more specific questions. To start, I queried about their body signs of stress.

They told me they are experiencing more headaches, stomachaches, tears, insomnia, and lethargy. I then asked about how they are coping. Most told me they are turning to their screens and some said they were trying to get outside more and be more active. Finally, I asked about what was causing the most stress. Girls told me their top three stressors: friendships (as in, not getting enough time to hang out and have fun), school (as in, how difficult it is to teach herself and stay engaged on Zoom or teams calls), and the future (as in, when will life get “back to normal” and what is summer and life going to be like).

At Bold New Girls, I have noticed a radical shift this year in girls’ energy (they are constantly fatigued), their enthusiasm (they really isn’t any), their moods (they are often sensitive at best, cantankerous at worst), and their mindsets (they are unable to hold a positive attitude about what’s working for them or going well).

Teen girls get my utmost empathy and compassion. Life is just tough right now. And, so are they! Your daughter is similarly struggling like these pollsters and she can become resilient by going through the tough stuff. Here are four ways you can help her with her mental health right now:

1. Look at her context. See her story and what’s been happening for her—at school, with her friends, and online. You may want to try asking more creative questions like, “I’d love to hear about your day today or how you are connecting online and in-person.” This helps you understand the “whole girl.”

2. Let her talk. Give her your undivided attention (putting down your phone and to-do list), the safe emotional space (assuring her this is her time to share, not yours), and the time to tell you what’s really on her mind (where neither of you watches the clock). This helps her unburden her concerns.

3. Listen. Don’t interrupt, interject, add on, problem solve, or minimize anything she says. Your job is to really hear her—both her words and the feelings behind her words—and “get” her in perhaps a new way. This helps her feel accepted.

4. Start as many sentences as you can with “Let’s try…”  Suggest what you can do together to cultivate her healthy and positive mindset. You could try a relaxing activity together such as stretching, yoga, or meditation. You could also plan a new activity or a little adventure that could offer you both a change of routine and scenery. This helps her feel she is not alone—you are right there with her—and you are on her side.

In the next Instagram poll, I am going to ask this question: “Are you getting the support you need and feeling more balanced!” I can’t wait to see improved results.

Pandemic life has been anything but normal but one thing is certain, all moms share the goal of keeping their kids happy and healthy. One key aspect of attaining this goal is helping your family get the best sleep possible. Between winter sniffles, inconsistent school schedules, and daylight savings, even the best sleepers can find themselves disrupted.

In my practice as a pediatric sleep consultant, I have seen a significant increase in preschool sleeping issues over the last year, which I believe directly correlates to the lack of physical and mental stimulation children are receiving during the day. Like many families, you may be finding yourself scrambling to get your family into a healthy sleep routine.

1. Create a Routine 
I always suggest to my clients that they have a “timed routine” which means to have a set time for bed and not just allow children to fall asleep when they are tired. It’s essential to maintain a regular bedtime routine that works for your family. Children of all ages do best with consistency so, that’s why a predictable, nightly routine can be the key to a good night’s sleep.

Start with turning off screens at least an hour before bedtime (blue light from screens can delay melatonin), wind down with bath/shower time, or perhaps washing up at the sink, pajamas followed by brushing of teeth. Then move to the bedroom and dim the lights for a few books. At this point, your child can climb into bed and it should take them about 20 or so minutes to fall asleep if bedtime is at an appropriate time. Keep in mind that overtired and under-tired children may struggle more to fall asleep, so keep an eye on that clock! Wake times will vary based on your child’s age and activity levels. Try and stick to this schedule as much as possible but recognize that it’s common to deviate on occasion. After all, sometimes it’s fun to be spontaneous!

2. Use Supportive Resources
You may need to utilize outside resources to help your child wind down before bedtime. Guided meditations and yoga are excellent ways to have your child calm their bodies and minds and settle prior to climbing in bed. Some children are so wound up from their day, especially if they’ve been on screens for a large part of it, and they need a little physical outlet that also helps relax them. Consider reading to your child every single night; not only is it a great part of the winddown routine, but it also promotes early literacy. So, it’s a win-win!

3. Call in the Reinforcements
If you’ve established a good routine, you are using your outside resources, but bedtime is still a struggle, then it is ok to get back on track with the help of a melatonin supplement.
