Katie Ledecky. Michael Phelps. Chase Kalisz. The D.C. area knows how to produce Olympic swimmers. Whether your little ones are destined for the same fate remains to be seen, but there’s no time like the present to get them in the water, even if weather conditions are less than ideal for a dip in the outdoor pool. Here’s a look at some of the best indoor watering holes in the area.

Barry Farm Aquatic Center

DCPR

Formerly an outdoor pool and reopened as an indoor one a few years ago, it has the only indoor waterslide – did we mention it’s twisty? – in D.C.’s Ward 8. The 8,800-square-foot facility includes a six-lane lap pool and a leisure pool with beach entry.

Cost: Free/D.C. residents, swim passes for nonresidents range from $3 to $149 for day, 30-day and 90-day passes
Where: 1230 Sumner Road, SE
Online: dpr.dc.gov

Woodrow Wilson Aquatic Center

Rusen G. via Yelp

Since it opened in 2009, this pool has become one of D.C.’s most popular. It has a 50-meter-by-25-yard competition-size pool with diving boards, a whirlpool and a separate beach-entry kiddie pool with water basketball and sprayers.

Cost: Free/D.C. residents, swim passes for nonresidents range from $3 to $149 for day, 30-day and 90-day passes
Where: 4551 Fort Dr., NW

Germantown Indoor Swim Center

Germantown Indoor Swim Center

This 60,000-square-foot place has a lot going on: a competition pool, recreation pool, hydroptherapy pools, diving platforms and waterslides...plural. Plus, the décor, with its (fake) palm trees and mini volcano, will transport you directly to the islands. Little ones can splash under a mushroom-shaped fountain or play in a separate fun zone.

Cost: $5/county resident or $8/nonresident 1-17 years old; $7/adult resident or $10/nonresident; $6/senior resident 55 and up or $10/nonresident
Where: 18000 Central Park Cir. (Boyds, MD)
Online: montgomerycountymd.gov

Eunice Kennedy Shriver and Sargent Shriver Aquatic Center

Eunice Kennedy Shriver and Sargent Shriver Aquatic Center

The eight-lane L-shaped main pool is divided into two 25-meter swim areas, a warm-water leisure pool, two separate hydrotherapy pools, diving platforms and – wait for it – a waterslide snaking along a wall. Claim to fame: Eleven divers who competed in the 2012 Olympics trained here.

Cost: $5/county resident or $8/nonresident 1-17 years old; $7/adult resident or $10/nonresident; $6/senior resident 55 and up or $10/nonresident
Where: 5900 Executive Blvd., N. (Bethesda, MD)

Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex

Sure the 50-meter competition pool is impressive, but the leisure pool is where it’s at. Float along the lazy river, zip down a waterslide (you knew it was coming) and bask in the constant 84- to 86-degree temperatures. For adults, there’s also an 18-person spa with jets shooting out water heated to 102 to 104 degrees.

Cost: $8/impact area resident, $11/resident of Prince George’s and Montgomery counties, $15/nonresident
Where: 8001 Sheriff Rd. (Landover, MD)
Online: pgsportsandlearn.com

Cub Run RECenter

The almost-5,000-square-foot leisure pool has two waterslides, including a 30-foot-high one that goes outside the building in an enclosed tube. There’s also a zero-depth water playground with climbing equipment, a small waterslide and lots of fountains.

Cost: $10/adult, $6.50/youth ages 5-18, free/child 4 and younger, $6.50/senior Mon.-Fri., $20/family up to five
Where: 4630 Stonecroft Blvd. (Chantilly, VA)
Online: fairfaxcounty.gov

Claude Moore Recreation Center

Jason R. via Yelp

The leisure pool here has what the website calls a “giant” waterslide, a children’s play area with playground-like equipment, a hot tub, a vortex and a lazy river. But if that’s not enough, there’s still space to free swim without having to go to the 25-yard-by-50-meter competition pool. Bonus: It’s next to the Loudoun Heritage Farm Museum, which highlights Loudoun County’s agricultural history through exhibits such as the Claude Moore Children’s Farm, an interactive exhibit where kiddos can be a “farmer for a day.”

Cost: $6/adult, $4/youth ages 3-17, $4/senior over 55, free/child 2 and younger, $16/family up to five
Where: 46105 Loudoun Park Ln. (Sterling, VA)

There might be an abundance of on-screen superheroes, but if there’s one thing we could use more of, it’s female heroes. Netflix just paved the way for many more with the first all-girl superhero animated series from Africa Mama K’s Team 4.

Netflix’s newly announced series Mama K’s Team 4 follows the adventures of four teenage girls recruited by an ex-secret agent to save the world. The story takes place in a futuristic version of Lusaka, Zambia’s capital.

The Netflix Original series was written by Zambian writer, Malenga Mulendema who was one of the eight winners of the 2015 Triggerfish Story Lab initiative, a talent competition for African storytellers. Having grown up watching animated shows and wondering why none of the characters resembled her, Mulendema wanted to create a series full of characters that looked more like her.

“In creating a superhero show set in Lusaka, I hope to introduce the world to four strong African girls who save the day in their own fun and crazy way. Most importantly, I want to illustrate that anyone from anywhere can be a superhero,” she said in the Netflix statement.

Netflix and Triggerfish are also recruiting local female writers from Africa to join the creative team behind the new series. No word yet on when the show will launch on Netflix.

Wish you could get some tunes playing with nothing more than your voice? As of today, you can now ask Alexa because a free Amazon streaming music platform just launched that will offer free to anyone using an Echo Device.

According to TechCrunch, the new service will give Spotify some stiff competition, offering the same two million song catalog as Prime Music. While it doesn’t come close to Amazon Music Unlimited which boasts has 50 million songs, the option now gives users the ability to stick with Amazon instead of using a third-party platform like Pandora.

In addition to seamless listening, Amazon’s new service provides a way for users to upgrade to the paid subscription services such as Amazon Music Unlimited and Amazon Prime.

Amazon currently offers its Prime Music service as a feature of its Prime subscription for $7.99 per month. Customers who do not have Prime can also pay $9.99 per month for an Amazon Music Unlimited subscription.

From chocolate kisses to candy hearts, everyone has a favorite sweet treat that they like to indulge in for Valentine’s Day—but one particular treat has held the crown as top choice…until now. This year, you won’t be able to score America’s most popular Valentine’s Day candy anywhere.

It has always been a neck-and-neck race between candy conversation hearts and that traditional heart-shaped box of chocolates when it comes to most popular Valentine’s Day candy. In 2017, those candy hearts finally edged out the competition taking the number one spot and held on to it for the following year. But for 2019, things are not looking so good for those colorful, chatty little hearts.

The CandyStore.com blog predicts that sales of candy conversation hearts will drop by 80 percent this year. That’s because the maker of the original candy conversation Sweethearts, NECCO—that had been in operation for for over 100 years—suddenly went out of business last year. While there are several alternatives on the market, CandyStore.com estimates that Sweethearts brand accounted for more than 80 percent of the candies sold.

So what could replace all those missing candy hearts? Valentine’s themed Cupid’s Message M&Ms were on the rise last year and could easily win over those looking for something sweet with a message. And hopefully, this year will be the only year without our beloved SweetHearts. According to Spangler Candy, the new owners of SweetHearts and NECCO Wafers, those little hearts could be back on shelves in 2020, in time for those sweet Valentine’s Day exchanges.

This 10-year-old from Kentucky won top prize with a Tom Brady-inspired science fair project. And no surprise here, the not-from-New England kiddo didn’t use the scientific method to show just how amazing Brady is—oh no, far from it!

So what exactly did the young scientist seek to prove? Ace Davis set out to prove that that Brady is a cheater (see: Deflategate). Instead of just talking the talk, Davis used his science project as a way to walk the walk. Yep, the little boy used science to prove that his dislike for Brady is actually warranted.

Davis—with some help from his family—did some pretty literal “field” work. He took to the football field, throwing balls at various inflation levels. Ace then measured the distance the balls traveled, eventually revealing that the least inflated ball went the farthest.

And there you have it: scientific proof—from a 10-year-old—that the famed QB would have had an unfair advantage when using a less-inflated ball. So, according to Davis, yes—Tom Brady is a cheater, at least as far as science is concerned.

Not only did the young scientist create a completely cool experiment to test out his hypothesis, he won his school’s science fair! According to dad Christopher’s now-viral Facebook post, Ace (and his fab football project) are moving on to the district science fair competition.

“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” Upsets Disney at Golden Globes & We All Win

It’s finally here! Awards season is upon us and the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature goes to…Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. And it is totally deserving of the big win.

If it seems like there has been a ton of Spider-Man movies lately, you’d be right. Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland have each played the Marvel superhero in recent years and in various reboots. But it’s this comic book page-to-screen adaption of Miles Morales—the first Spider-Man of color—that has fans hooked on a whole new era of the masked web-slinger—and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association clearly agreed it’s a winner, too.

Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was up against some pretty stiff and industry-established competition for the Golden Globe, including Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet, Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs, Disney-Pixar’s The Incredibles 2 and Studio Chizu’s Mirai. And while we might have expected a Disney or Pixar title to easily take home the Golden Globe, the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man came out on top.

Was it an upset? Totally—but a welcome one for the rise of representation in Hollywood, where everyone benefits. In a poignant quote backstage at the awards, Spider-Man co-director Peter Ramsey said, “Anyone can wear the mask. Everyone is powerful, everyone is necessary.”

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is rated PG and playing in theaters nationwide.
