Family vacations are a great way to get away from the rush of modern life and reconnect with each other. The memories that come from fun-filled family vacations will last a lifetime, but sometimes their boredom and frustration can rear its ugly head. No one can be happy all the time, but with a little bit of planning, a lot of patience and these five tips, you can survive your family vacation with a wealth of happy memories.

#1. Plan Your Expenses

Money is one of the most stressful aspects of any family vacation. You should set a budget with your spouse and any other adults that will accompany on your trip well in advance. Find out who is contributing and in what amounts. You should also set what spending limits will be. Then, start saving at least three months before you plan to depart. Aside from your spending budget, you will need to set money aside for unexpected expenses such as medical cost, impulse purchases, gifts, and even inflation. This can keep everyone in the green out of the poorhouse during your family vacation. If you have kids that will be traveling with you, consider having them save their allowance for a few months. That way they can make their own “fun” or optional purchases while on vacation. Not only will this help keep you on budget, but they will also feel more involved in the planning process.

#2. Plan Your Travel Time & Know Your Limits

One of the hardest parts of going on vacation with your family is getting to your destination. Plan your travel time well in advance of your trip to stay on schedule. Can you imagine getting packed and ready only to miss your flight? How about setting a time to hit the road only to get mired in rush hour traffic due to departing from the house too late? Instead of getting stressed out, plan properly. For every child in your vacation party, add an extra 20 minutes to your departure time. For every slow-moving adult or elderly person, add 15 minutes. Once you have the extra time calculated, set your departure ahead accordingly to stay on schedule and retain your sanity. It is also critical to know your limits and that of those traveling with you. Everyone has those little things that can cause a major meltdown, keep them in mind when planning your trip. Every so often you may have to just let the baby cry or allow your spouse to pick the radio station on to keep the peace. Choosing your battles not only will ensure your trip goes smoothly, but it will also keep everyone happy and your wits intact.

#3. Set Aside Time for Yourself

Taking a vacation with your family is a lot of fun for them, but it can also be a lot of work for you and your spouse. Creating me time allows your family to have independent fun while you get some time to yourselves. If your family has time away from you, they will begin to appreciate the time you are around them even more and you will also feel much more refreshed. Depending on the age of the people in your vacation party, downtime can mean any number of things. If you have other adults or older kids, consider letting them explore your vacation spot on their own. While everyone is away, you can kick up your feet, relax, and just let the strain of the trip melt away. You should never feel selfish or guilty for cherishing that time away from your family even on vacation. The role of a parent is one that changes often but seldom involves truly having no responsibility. Getting in your “me time” allows you to be the best parent that you can be for the rest of your vacation.

#4. Learn to Compromise

On a family vacation, you are going to be faced with various personalities outside of their usual environment. As a result, it is important to be flexible if you want things to go smoothly. Regardless of your destination, there is going to be several things to see and events to attend. That means there is going to be conflicts about what to do first or when to go to each event. Make a point of pairing up family members with similar interest if some activities occur at the same time that different groups don’t want to miss. This can cut down on arguments and make your vacation much more enjoyable for all since no one will be stuck doing something they have no interest in. Depending on the age of your family members, some may need to sleep earlier than others. Consider taking turns going to bed early so that every night owl can have a chance to party hard all night long.

#5. Pay Attention to Family, Not Electronics

One of the main reasons to go on vacation with your family is to get away from the real world and reconnect. That is hard to do if you spend your whole trip glued to your phone, tablet or laptop. Social media and work tend to be able to reach out and touch us whenever and wherever we may be and that has to stop. Be present with your family to make memories and enjoy your time together. We are not saying to leave your electronics at home but make a point not to use them until the end of each day. Laugh, joke, and immerse yourself in the moment to get the most out of your family vacation. You may be surprised at just how much you learn about your family and how much you actually don’t miss staying connected.

The Bottom Line: Traveling can be fun though traveling with your family can be a challenge. By following our handy suggestions, you will find that your vacation flows much more smoothly and your sanity will remain intact.

Is your child all about the screen? You’re not alone. In an effort to reduce screen time woes, parents are hiring pros to help their kiddos go phone free!

According to the Pew Research Center, a whopping 54 percent of teens in the United States feel they spend too much time on their phone. Beyond that stat, two-thirds of their parents have concerns over the amount of screen time their teens take in.

Even though teens are clearly getting more than their fair share of screen time, what about the littles? The New York Times recently reported on going phone-free and the new way modern moms (and dads too) are dealing with smartphone overuse. Parents who feel ill-equipped to handle screen and phone time issues are getting help—from professional coaches.

So what does a parenting coach who specializes in screen/phone time do? In a nutshell, they help parents to get the screens out of their children’s hands. Instead of gaming the day away, the coaches suggest active, hands-on options and overall lifestyle changes. And if you’re wondering what this service will cost you, prices can range up to $250 per hour, depending on the coach and location.

How Much Screen Time Should Kids Be Allowed? New Study Urges Stricter Limits

If you’ve taken the kids to the pool or beach this summer, chances are you’ve spent a good amount of time trying to squeeze your kids in and out of wet bathing suits when nature calls. One-piece swimsuits for girls are especially challenging to maneuver when you need to change a diaper or hit the potty, but finally one company has come up with a genius solution and we can’t believe no one thought of this before.

Wowease Swimsuits were invented by two moms, because no one else understands the struggle quite like other parents. Unlike traditional one-piece swimsuits, these have hidden magnetic snaps at the waistband that allow for easy access for diaper changes without having to remove the entire suit.

Photo: Wowease Swimsuits

If your little ones have graduated to using the toilet, these brilliant moms have even thought ahead to the problem of the bottom flap hanging down into the toilet. The suits also feature hidden magnets in the back so that you can secure the flap while using the potty.

The suits, which also come with built-in UPF 50 sun protection, are available online in sizes to fit babies, toddlers and girls. They retail for $20 to $25, depending on the style. The only question left is, when will they make an adult version?

With the upcoming Jun. 21 release of Toy Story 4, the rush of movie-themed products has begun! One of the most notable additions to the growing mountain of merch is the new Adidas x Toy Story collection.

The line includes plenty of picks your kiddo will beg for. The mini versions of adult-like shoes include small-sized UltraBOOST 19’s and so much more. Also look for Continental 80’s x Toy Story and NMD R1 x Toy Story: Bo Peep styles.

Don’t expect this footwear-film collab to feature cartoon characters splattered across the shoes. Instead, the shoes are inspired by the new Disney flick. That means no Buzz or Woody options. But that’s okay. These shoes offer enough style and sass that your littles will want to wear them all summer (or all year!) long.

The cute collection debuts Jun. 21, the same day as the the movie’s theatrical release. Get the Adidas x Toy Story line for $65-$160, depending on the style.

Who has time to buy TP? If you’re tired of seeing an empty cardboard tube hanging in your bathroom, Charmin has a toilet paper product you need ASAP—the Forever Roll!

So what exactly is the Charmin Forever Roll? Despite the clever name, the roll doesn’t actually last for forever. But according to reports, it can last for up to three months in a single-user household. That is, unless you have a curious toddler who wants nothing more than to unravel the entire roll daily.

photo: Charmin

The rolls come into two sizes: a 12-inch diameter multi-user and 8.7-inch diameter single user option. If you just can’t fathom what a Forever Roll looks like, think of those mega-sized rolls you’d find in just about any Target, Walmart or other large-scale retailer’s bathroom. It’s that big.

Before you start scouring local grocery stores for the Forever Roll, stop. This TP is only available online from Charmin’s website. Along with the rolls, you can also buy freestanding or wall mounted holders. And if you buy three rolls at the same time, the holder is free.

The Forever Roll starts at $9.99 for a single roll. Starter kits (three rolls and a stand) range from $39.96 to $59.96, depending on the stand you choose. But if you visit Charmin’s website now you can get either option for the sale price of $29.97.

10 Ridiculous Things You Can Buy on Your Next Costco Run

Walmart Puts Amazon on Notice with One-Day Delivery

Mother’s Day is coming up on Sunday, May 12th, 2019, which means you’re running out of time to get or make an excellent gift for the woman who gave you life.

Now, with two little ones, I don’t usually expect much for Mother’s Day. My hubby will often pick me up some flowers and something I mentioned wanting but would never buy for myself, and my oldest daughter will make me something out of construction paper and elbow macaroni, but that’s about it. Don’t get me wrong — I’m not complaining about it. I treasure every elbow macaroni craft, but sometimes you end up hoping for something a little more … well, awesome.

With that in mind, as Mother’s Day gets closer, here are some fantastic ideas to make your holiday rock a little bit harder.

Mommy and Me Yoga

Whether you’re an experienced yogi or a newbie, a mommy and me yoga class can be a blast. These beginners’ yoga classes can be a great way to stretch out, relax and spend time with your little ones. You may even find that you’ve got a talent for yoga, which might give you a way to relax even on your most stressful days.

Yoga helps to increase flexibility and improve your metabolism and can also help you lose weight. You don’t have to be active or naturally flexible to try out yoga, either. If you keep at it, the strength and flexibility will develop. As the late, great Carrie Fisher put it, “be afraid but do it anyway.” The confidence will come later.

Mother’s Day Weekend Camping

Who says you only have to celebrate Mother’s Day on a Sunday? Make it an entire weekend by heading out for a family camping trip. It doesn’t matter how old your kids are — you can enjoy a weekend camping trip. Just make sure you have a couple of comfort items like blankets or stuffed animals so your kids will be comfortable — and stock up on snacks and other supplies. You don’t want to be roughing it with young children. Wait until they get a little bit older for those wilderness excursions.

My parents took me camping as a kid and, honestly, they’re some of my best memories — even if we were sleeping on a beach in a sandy tent and got so sunburned we looked like little lobsters. We never went on a Mother’s Day camping trip, but it’s a great way to spend the holiday weekend.

Make Some Crafts Together

While I adore the elbow macaroni creations that I get from my daughter every year, it might be fun to make a craft together. Make splatter-paint canvases by throwing paint on a canvas. I can guarantee that kids of every age will love this one — kids adore making a mess! Just make sure you do it outside, because you will get paint everywhere.

This year, I think me and my oldest daughter are going to make handpainted flower pots. Terra cotta pots are perfect for painting, and once they’re dry, you can plant anything you want in them. Both beautiful and functional.

DIY Pizza Party

Who doesn’t love pizza? Instead of ordering in, why not get the kids involved and make your own pizzas? If you’re handy in the kitchen, you can easily make your own pizza dough. But if you’re not, store bought is fine.

Set up the pizza dough and let your kids build their own with their favorite toppings. You can even create a pizza bar with all the toppings, sauces and cheeses you want. Then, once they’re decked out, throw them in the oven and you’ve got a tasty dinner that you all worked together to make. What better way to spend Mother’s Day?

If you’re worried about counting those carbs, don’t fret — you can make a low-carb pizza crust with a riced cauliflower.

Play in the Dirt

Kids love digging in the dirt, so why not get your hands dirty and plant a garden? You can plant flowers to decorate your yard, or maybe vegetables, depending on what’s in season in your area.

If you don’t have a yard that you can dig up to create a garden — either because of HOA rules or just because you don’t have a yard at all — set up some raised planting beds and go to town. Your kids will love to have you playing in the dirt with them, and depending on what you plant, you might have some fresh vegetables or fruits to enjoy a few months down the road.

Whatever You Do, Enjoy Your Day

Now, I’m not saying you have to do all of these things for Mother’s Day — or any of them. This list is just to give you a few ideas to help your Mother’s Day be a little more awesome this year.

Jennifer Landis is a mom, wife, freelance writer, and blogger. She enjoys long naps on the couch, sneaking spoonfuls of peanut butter when her kid's not looking, and binge watching Doctor Who while her kid's asleep.  She really does like her kid, though, she promises. Put your Amazon app away and take a trip to the bank, because the online retailer’s formerly cashless IRL stores are now accepting the green stuff. The brick-and-mortar stores are changing their payment options, depending on where you live.

In April, the cashless-to-cash Amazon Go transition rumors started swirling. A company spokesperson confirmed to CNBC, that Go stores would start accepting additional types of payment at some point in the future––and the future is now!

photo: Courtesy of Amazon

Following backlash against the cashless payment-only method, Amazon reconsidered its Go checkout model. Even though the ability to scan, bag and leave without spending half your day wrangling kids in the check-out line sounds like bliss to many of us mamas, it also excludes some customers. Anyone without access to an Amazon account or without a credit or debit card can’t use the high-tech stores.

According to recent reports, Amazon’s newest (and twelfth) Go store will open in New York City this week—and it will accept cash. The store, located in Brookfield Place mall in Lower Manhattan, will have “entry associates” who scan cash payers in. After shopping, these customers can check out with an employee, pay cash and get a paper receipt. And, of course, you can still use the cashless option.

As of now the NYC Amazon Go store is the only one of the retailer’s brick-and-mortar shops that will accept cash, but expect more stores to roll out this option over time.
