Amber Guetebier, Red Tricycle’s Mobile Editor shares this recipe and tells us, “I made these for my Sicilian friend for Christmas. They are totally time-consuming (over 2 hrs from start to finish) but perfect if you want something autentico for the holidays, and if your kids are tenacious and into baking and getting covered in flour and honey. If your kids are a little less patient, try making the dough the night before. The filling is delightfully sticky and the end product has a wonderful, not-too-sweet flavor. Traditionally these are covered in a powdered sugar based icing and then covered with sprinkles, but I skip that step and add sprinkles after the egg wash to get them to stick, because you don’t want to skip the sprinkles!”

Ingredients:

Dough:
4 cups of flour
1 1/2 tbsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 sugar
1 cup butter
1 large egg
2 tbsp vanilla
1/2 cup milk

Filling:
2 cups of dried figs (soaked in warm water for about 20 minutes)
2 cups of dried dates
1/2 cup of raisins (soak in warm water for about 20 minutes)
1/2 cup of honey
1/2 cup of orange marmalade
2 tsp. cinnamon
2/3 cup walnuts, coarsely chopped

Egg wash: 1 large egg white beaten with 1 tbsp. water for an egg wash

Method:

1. Sift together dry ingredients (flour, baking powder and salt) and then stir in sugar. Using a fork, cut the butter into the flour mixture. Tip: freeze the butter and then use a grater to shred it into the flour mix, much like you would for a pie crust. Beat the egg, vanilla, and milk together and slowly add to the flour mixture, working with hands to make dough. Turn that out on to a floured surface and knead for 5 minutes or so, until nice and smooth and soft. Divide into 4 pieces, wrap each piece, and place put in refrigerator for at least 45 minutes (or overnight).

2. Grind the figs, dates, raisins and nuts (if not coarsely chopped) in a food processor until coarse. (You can also just chop them, but a food processor is easier). Put this mix in a bowl and add the honey, cinnamon, and marmalade.

3. Preheat the oven to 375ºF. Lightly grease 2 cookie sheets.

4. Take out the dough and roll each piece into about a 12 inch square. Cut the dough into 4×3 rectangles. Put about 2 tbsp of the filling into the center (in a line) and roll the dough over. This makes a tube. pinch the ends and then shape lightly into a crescent. Make diagonal slits across the top, and then place onto pan. Brush with egg mix and sprinkles (before baking).

5. Bake for 25 minutes or until golden brown.

If your’e a fan of lemon poppy seed muffins, this recipe is sure to please. Courtesy Lisa Viger, author of Easy, Affordable, Raw: How to Go Raw on $10 a Day, and raw food expert, these buckwheat pancakes make for the perfect weekend breakfast or brunch dish. Serve with agave or date syrup.

Makes 4-6 pancakes

Ingredients:
1 cup (100 g) ground buckwheat groats, soaked and dried
½ cup (50 g) ground flaxseeds
Pinch salt
½ cup (115 g) apple puree
3 tablespoons (45 ml) lemon juice
1 teaspoon lemon zest
¼ cup (60 ml) agave
3 tablespoons (30 g) date paste
¼ cup (60 ml) water
2 tablespoons (15 g) poppy seeds

Method:
1. In a medium bowl, mix together the buckwheat, flaxseeds, and salt. Add the apple puree and then the lemon juice, lemon zest, agave, date paste, and water. Stir until well combined. Fold in the poppy seeds.

2. Using about 3 tablespoons (45 ml) of batter for each pancake, scoop out pancakes onto a lined dehydrator tray, making 2- to 3-inch (5- to-7.5 cm) rounds that are about ½-inch (1-cm) thick. Dehydrate at 118°F (48°C) for 6 hours. Peel from the tray liner and flip over onto an unlined dehydrator tray. Continue drying until the outside is beginning to get a little crisp and the inside is still a bit mushy.

3. Pancakes are best straight out of the dehydrator, but they can be kept in a lidded container in the refrigerator for up to a few days.

Kellogg’s Just Turned Their Cereal Boxes Black and White for the Best Reason

Between the mountain of baby socks, toddler tee’s and towels, parenting has morphed laundry from a mere to chore into something rivaling an Ironman triathlon. While the 30,000 onesies you registered for mean you can go at least a few days in between washing your kiddo’s clothes, what about your own bed sheets?

Long gone are those not-so-neat-freak college dorm days when you would go weeks (or sadly, months) before washing your sheets. Now that you’re an actual adult, and responsible for tiny humans of your own, you want a totally hygienic home––and that means washing your sheets regularly.

photo: Rawpixel via Pexels

While you know going for months in between sheet washing sessions just isn’t okay, you’re still not entirely sure how often to clean your bed linens. Along with the 30,000 to 40,000 skin cells you shed daily (and the hungry little dust mites that follow), your sheets are subject to everything from sweat to drool. Beyond the usual sheet-dirtying suspects, if you sleep naked you may end up with dried fecal matter on your sheets.

Then there are pet parents. Your playful pup can bring a host of not-so-welcome contaminants into your bed. Obviously, if your furry friend tracks half the backyard into your bed, you’ll need to wash the sheets ASAP. The same goes for toddler vomit, baby spit-up and all the other fluids your kiddo gets on the sheets.

So how often do your sheets need to make it into the to-do laundry pile? While there’s no 100 percent magic number, once a week is typically necessary to keep you and your family clean.

Forget about hand-washing each teeny tiny plastic LEGO brick and minifigure. This LEGO cleaning hack will save you time—and might just save your sanity, too!

You know the cold that your toddler and preschooler keep passing back and forth? Those germ-covered toys definitely aren’t helping the situation. Read on for the deets on a quick and re-brick-ulously easy way to scrub down all your kid’s LEGO collection.

photo: Semevent via Pixabay

All you need to get those LEGO bricks clean is a mesh laundry bag and a dishwasher. Place the plastic bricks into the bag, seal it tight and put the whole thing onto the top rack of your dishwasher. Turn the dishwasher on and let it do the work to wash those nasty germs away.

To avoid damage or melting issues, remove the LEGO bricks before your dishwasher gets to the drying cycle. While this might take an extra step, the work is pretty minimal. Empty the laundry bag of LEGO bricks onto a clean towel and blot, or simply let the bricks air dry. Germs, be gone!
