What’s Serena Williams’ greatest accomplishment? Hint: It’s not her stand-out tennis record. It’s her daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr.

Even though the celeb sports mama doesn’t celebrate birthdays (as a Jehovah’s Witness bday parties are not part of her belief system), she did pay tribute to her now-two-year-old daughter on the day of her birth.

Competing in the U.S. Open didn’t stop Williams from posting a family birth pic and cute caption on Instagram. Along with a photo of the tot just minutes after her birth, Williams wrote, “The last 2 years have been my greatest accomplishment.”

Hubby Alexis Ohanian echoed the sweet sentiment with his own IG post, “Thank you for being the greatest thing we’ve ever done.” Ohanian, who recently wrote an essay for The New York Times Parenting section, also added, “And thank you for teaching me that every parent in the US deserves those first months with their newborn. I’m a better business leader because of it. #PaidFamilyLeave.”

Here’s What Alexia Ohanian Has to Say about Paternity Leave

How Many Kids Does Kim Kardashian West Want?

In a recent essay for The New York Times Parenting section, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian got real about career expectations, becoming a father and paternity leave.

While Ohanian was lucky enough to take 16 weeks of paid paternity leave after his wife, tennis star Serena Williams, gave birth to daughter Olympia in 2017, not all dads are as fortunate.

In his essay, Ohanian writes, “Before Olympia was born, I had never thought much about paternity leave and, to be honest, Reddit’s company policy was not my idea. Our vice president of people and culture, Katelin Holloway, brought it up to me in a meeting and it sounded O.K., so why not?”

But after Williams’s complication-filled delivery of Olympia, Ohanian realized just how important his paid paternity leave was, writing, “Nothing could have dragged me away from my wife and daughter in those hours, days and weeks—and I’m grateful that I was never forced to choose between my family and my job.”

So why does Ohanian think men aren’t asking for paternity leave? He wrote, “The short answer is stigma. Men are conditioned to be breadwinners, exclusively—and another mouth to feed calls for more bread on the table (to say nothing of college tuition)—so off to work we go. Our sense of duty is often fear-based: Men assume their bosses will frown on paternity leave, so we don’t dare to go there.”

Underscoring the importance of the post-birth time for dads, Ohanian added, “I took my full 16 weeks and I’m still ambitious and care about my career. Talk to your bosses and tell them I sent you.” While a direct order from the Reddit co-founder may not score your S.O. paternity leave, it may start a conversation that’s all too necessary.

In a powerful new essay for Elle magazine, mom of six and actress Angelina Jolie shares the advice she gives her kids on women’s rights.

Jolie, star of the upcoming Maleficent 2, has travelled the globe advocating for women’s rights, which she discusses in the essay. “In my work, I travel often to countries where I know that if I were a citizen there, my beliefs and actions as a woman could land me in jail or expose me to physical danger,” the 44-year-old actress wrote. “Female human rights defenders across the world are incarcerated for their political views or for defending themselves or others, with courage I can hardly imagine.”

As a mom Jolie feels it’s important to pass on the knowledge she’s gained to her own kids. “I often tell my daughters that the most important thing they can do is to develop their minds,” Jolie wrote. “You can always put on a pretty dress, but it doesn’t matter what you wear on the outside if your mind isn’t strong. There is nothing more attractive—you might even say enchanting—than a woman with an independent will and her own opinions.”

Her daughters aren’t the only ones learning the importance of women’s rights, however. The actress also recognizes the need to give her sons the same lesson in respecting others. “I could not be prouder of my sons for the men they are becoming, the way they respect their sisters and are respected by them,” she said.

Mindy Kaling’s Speech about Single Motherhood Is as Real as It Gets

The Mother of Dragons recently revealed that she underwent surgery—twice—for life-threatening brain aneurysms. Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke is sharing her story now in hopes raising awareness of her condition, which affects more young people than you might think.

Clarke recently shared her story of undergoing brain surgery for two aneurysms in a personal essay in The New Yorker. Her first aneurysm was discovered while filming Game of Thrones in 2011. She described her diagnosis, surgery and the long path to recovery after. “On the set, I didn’t miss a beat, but I struggled,” Clarke wrote. “Season two would be my worst. I didn’t know what Daenerys was doing. If I am truly being honest, every minute of every day I thought I was going to die.”

Along with her published essay, Clarke launched a new charity called Same You to help raise awareness about the recovery needs of those who have suffered a brain injury, especially young people. “I am calling for the prioritization of increased funding for neurorehabilitation,” Clarke’s blog on the Same You site said. “Everyone after leaving hospital should have the multi-disciplinary rehabilitation and recovery care they desperately need.”

What Do Jessica Alba’s Tattoos Mean? They Have a Special Meaning about Her Kids

Getting kids unglued from screens and playing outside isn’t always an easy task, but the benefits of spending time outdoors are well worth the effort. One expert suggests kids should spend a minimum of three hours a day running, playing, and just plain being a kid outside.

Angela Hanscom is a pediatric occupational therapist and author of the bestselling book Balanced and Barefoot who recently started a therapeutic outdoor program for kids called TimberNook. In a recent interview with the Huffington Post Hanscom said, “Movement through active free play, especially outside, improves everything from creativity to academic success to emotional stability.” Hanscom says that, ideally, kids should be playing outside for three hours each day, not including organized sports.

So how on earth can most families fit in that much outdoor time between school, homework, and other after school activities? Hanscom says that school recess time should account for some of that time and believes schools should lengthen recess. In the meanwhile, just squeeze in as much time as you can.

Hanscom does have a few suggestions on how to make the most of whatever outside time you can manage. For example, she suggests leaving them to their own means of entertainment. “There’s so much value in kids creating play schemes on their own. Kids who are always told how to play have trouble thinking outside the box, and even answering freeform essay questions. Plus, true outdoor free play is like cross training, with the climbing, spinning, going upside down, and the like that adults don’t encourage but that are so valuable for their development,” she explains.

How much time do your kids spend playing outdoors every day? Share your thoughts in the comments.

A former San Francisco mom, Kaui Hart Hemmings is the acclaimed author of The Descendants and a short story collection House of Thieves. She contributed an essay about her relationship with her daughter to Because I Love Her:  34 Women Writer’s Reflect on the Mother-Daughter Bond. She has a new addition to her family as they recently adopted her son Leo from Ethiopia. The new film The Descendants, based on her novel, is getting rave reviews. Kaui took a few minutes out of her crazy week of interviews for the Los Angeles premiere to speak with Red Tricycle.

Nicki Richesin: Congratulations on the success of The Descendants. Your brilliant novel (made into a film directed by Alexander Payne and starring George Clooney) just opened. What was it like being on the set with the cast and crew?

Kaui Hart Hemmings: This cast and crew was absolutely top notch. Everyone has their unique jobs, yet it’s all in service of the same goal. There was a lot of fun on and off the set. Parties, dancing, softball, and going to Kauai was quite the experience for all of us.

NR: Most of Alexander Payne’s films (Election, About Schmidt, Sideways) are hilarious and yet sweetly vulnerable and compelling. How did you enjoy working with him on The Descendants?

KHH: I got to see a master at work. I enjoyed his joy, his curiosity. He’s exacting, patient and observant. And a big ball of fun.

NR: You lived in San Francisco when your daughter Eleanor was born. When you return to the bay area, do you have favorite places and parks where you like to hang out with your family?

KHH: The Bay Area Discovery Museum, Golden Gate Park, the Presidio; I have such beautiful memories of those old haunts. It’s such a child-friendly city (until your child reaches a certain age).

NR: You returned to Hawaii, where you grew up, to live with your family. It must be such an inspiring place to live and work. What’s inspiring you the most right now?

KHH: Well lately I’ve been seeing the place I’ve inhabited up on a big screen with actors spewing out words that I wrote. That’s kind of inspiring me to try that again, to capture places and people never seen before and yet resonate somehow.

NR: What are some of your favorite things to do when you spend time with Eleanor and Leo?

KHH: Eleanor is 7. My son, Leo, is 15 months.  That’s an age gap, but I find that the beach accommodates age gaps. My perfect Sunday is at Kailua Beach. My daughter and my dog, Bob, boogie board. Fearless Leo charges the water. Friends, food, good sandy fun.

NR: Could you tell us a little bit about what you’re working on now?

KHH: I’m working on a book set in a ski resort town in Colorado. Another family light-handed drama set in an idyllic place.

NR: Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with me and best of luck to you with your next novel.

Nicki Richesin is the editor of four literary anthologies, The May Queen, Because I Love Her, What I Would Tell Her and Crush. She lives in the San Francisco bay area with her husband and daughter. You can find more about her work on her website.
