It seems every time you turn around a new study seeks to definitively answer the question: is screen time harmful to kids? It can be dizzying to keep up with it all when each new study says something different—but this latest research offers some hope.

New guidelines issued by the the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) in the United Kingdom state that there is little evidence to suggest that screen time is directly harmful to kids’ health and that it’s impossible to recommend age appropriate time limits. The RCPCH made a single recommendation: that screen time should be avoided for at least one hour before bedtime.

Despite previous research that has linked screen time to obesity, mental health issues and even physical changes in the brain, the guideline suggests that emphasizing positive activities like exercise, socializing and sleep is more critical than placing limits on screen time. Rather than general limitations, parents should decide what is best for their own individual family.

“When it comes to screen time I think it is important to encourage parents to do what is right by their family,”Max Davie, RCPCH Officer for Health Promotion, said in a statement. “However, we know this is a gray area and parents want support. We suggest that age appropriate boundaries are established, negotiated by parent and child, that everyone in the family understands.”

It’s finally here! Awards season is upon us and the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature goes to…Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. And it is totally deserving of the big win.

If it seems like there has been a ton of Spider-Man movies lately, you’d be right. Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland have each played the Marvel superhero in recent years and in various reboots. But it’s this comic book page-to-screen adaption of Miles Morales—the first Spider-Man of color—that has fans hooked on a whole new era of the masked web-slinger—and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association clearly agreed it’s a winner, too.

Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was up against some pretty stiff and industry-established competition for the Golden Globe, including Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet, Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs, Disney-Pixar’s The Incredibles 2 and Studio Chizu’s Mirai. And while we might have expected a Disney or Pixar title to easily take home the Golden Globe, the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man came out on top.

Was it an upset? Totally—but a welcome one for the rise of representation in Hollywood, where everyone benefits. In a poignant quote backstage at the awards, Spider-Man co-director Peter Ramsey said, “Anyone can wear the mask. Everyone is powerful, everyone is necessary.”

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is rated PG and playing in theaters nationwide.

There's something so quintessentially French about Clafoutis — and Murat herself — it's a little absurd. She named her shop for the traditional rustic french cake made with with cherries that she fondly recalls her grandmother Simone baking during her childhood days in the French countryside. Mémé Simone had a gift for making things simple, elegant, and fun, and Murat carries on her legacy creating events and offering products in exquisitely good taste.

KEY TIPS: Don't have a balloon? A toy, stuffed animal or even a colorful shirt would work just as well.

When we first spoke to Meghan a little over a year ago about the prospect of becoming Red Tricycle’s family events calendar editor, we were blown away by her bubbly personality, keen eye for divulging the coolest family activities in L.A., and downright enviable organization skills. Meghan seemed like someone we’d want to be friends with to gab over a glass of wine about all the fun events in Tinseltown.

Fast forward a year and we’re impressed by all that Meghan has accomplished as our Los Angeles calendar editor. She has managed to find awesome events each week in a vast city of freeways and dozens of neighborhoods. Curating the Red Tricycle events calendar is a far cry from her previous life where she worked over a decade in Product Development & Marketing for companies both established giants (AOL, eBay) and startups (Rent.com, eToys). Meghan knew she couldn’t keep working those crazy internet hours when her twins were born.  It wasn’t long before she found her way back to her first love – writing.  Now, when not exploring every nook and cranny of Los Angeles with her little ones, she’s usually writing about it.  Or playing, cooking, eating, running, and always reading  – children’s literacy is one of her other passions (if you’re looking for book suggestions for kids of any age, check out www.litforkids.com).

We are so thrilled to welcome Meghan as our first ever Los Angeles editor. Meghan will be writing local stories to help you have more fun with your kids, engaging with you on our Facebook page, and of course, continuing to curate the family events calendar. If you’d like to give Meghan a tip about what’s new in your neighborhood, what you’d like to hear more of (or less of), and any Los Angeles-worthy family news, shoot her an email: Meghan.Rose (AT) tinybeans.go-vip.net.

Ride on!

If you forgot to reserve your campsites early this summer, don’t dismay, you can still enjoy one of Oregon’s state parks on an easy day trip from Portland. Set on the banks of the Willamette River, Champoeg State Heritage Area is a place rich in history and recreation opportunities to discover this summer. In the early 1800s, Champoeg was home to the native Kalapuya people and French-Canadian fur trappers before the settlers arrived via the Oregon Trail in the 1840s. It is also the site where the Northwest’s first provincial government was formed in 1843.

Go: Now!

Approximate travel time: Less than an hour from downtown Portland.

What to do: Bring the bicycles or some wheels to help little legs cover the 4 mile end-to-end trail or a picnic blanket to relax on under one of the big oak trees.

The Visitor Center and Bookstore is in the big red barn at the park entrance. Stop here first to pick up a map of the area and tour the interactive exhibit. Kids can touch and feel fur pelts and learn about the cultural history and events that occurred here over the centuries. Look for swallows’ nests and baby birds near the entrance before heading inside.

Next to the Visitor Center is the 1860s Kitchen Garden and the Threshing Barn, a restored 1862 barn where the park hosts regular living history demonstrations, such as Children’s Jobs Day to give kids a taste of pioneer life on the prairie.

Take the bike path past the grassy prairie and archeology dig toward the Riverside Day Use Area and you’ll find the Pioneer Mothers Log Cabin. It’s a replica of a pioneer’s log cabin that displays authentic furnishings from the 1850s. It’s open Fri-Sun or by appointment. From there, continue on to the Monument Plaza, known as the “Plymouth Rock of the Northwest”. This is the site of the 1843 vote that established the first government in the Northwest. There is a short hiking trail that begins here that takes you close to the river.

East of the Visitors Center is the Oak Grove Day Use Area. Along the bike path you’ll notice the nest boxes for the native Western Bluebirds, which are part of an effort of the Prescott Bluebird Recovery Project. As you approach the day use area entrance, you’ll see a Disc Golf Course. It’s a 15-hole course and is said to be the oldest disc golf course in Oregon. If you forgot to bring your own discs you can purchase child and adult weight discs back at the Visitors Center. There is also a boat and fishing dock in this day use area.

Continuing east on the bike trail you’ll pass the campground, where you can see the tent sites, yurts and cabins. It’s a nice cruise on the mostly flat trail as it becomes more wooded and has views of the river. Make the Historic Butteville Store just past the end of the park, over the hill, the incentive to continue the whole way. The store was established in 1863 and is the oldest continuously operating store in Oregon. Ice cream, homemade pie, cold drinks and more await to rejuvenate tired kiddos at the end of the trail.

Possible lunch spots: Pack a picnic and enjoy a peaceful lunch at one of the many picnic tables and grassy areas or find a secluded spot under the trees overlooking the river. Alternatively, you can head to the Historic Butteville Store where they serve classic sandwiches and old-fashioned treats. Inside and outside seating is available.

How to dress: Comfortable and weather appropriate.

Need to know: Day use permits are required year-round. Permits can be purchased at the entrance booth and visitor center for $5.

Bonus: Living history events with costumed interpreters are held on Saturdays. Check the schedule for details.

Cost of trip: Inexpensive.

Looking for another family friendly Seattle bakery? Sharing a scone or grabbing a coffee with kids in tow is easy in Seattle neighborhoods with established independent bakeries. Think Besalu in Ballard, Dahlia in Belltown, and Macrina in Queen Anne. But what about Lake City, an area long deprived of cafe/bakery culture?

Luckily, there’s the new and fabulous Kaffeeklatsch. This new neighbor is co-owned by Annette Heide-Jessen, the former manager of the venerable Columbia City Bakery, and its in-house treats are made by baker Brian Hensley.

The storefront that houses Kaffeeklatsch was gutted and built up from the studs. It’s a clean, bright new space, and the focus on German pastries gives the shop its own spin. It’s family friendly by design, with one section of the shop serving as a designated play area with toys, a chalkboard and pint-sized seating. The bakery is open and airy, with a lively din and plenty of room for strollers and gear. Coffee is made with care from Seattle Coffee Works beans.

Kaffeeklatsch serves up scratch-made and seriously tasty German pastries mixed with classic favorites. Think banana bread and triple ginger cookies alongside pillowy German pretzels and Bienenstich—or bee sting cake—a vanilla pastry with cream filling topped with honey and almonds. Or try a generous slice of berry Blechkuchen, a buttery pastry with fresh raspberries melted into layers of dough.

The staff is friendly and encourages parents groups to meet at the shop. Try the breakfast sandwich and drip coffee special weekday mornings, or take the family for a leisurely weekend snack.
