There is no better time of year to hit the road and find adventure with the family than in Spring. 78.1 miles from downtown Portland Portland is a long way away from the beaches of California, but you can get a little taste of the boardwalk experience in Seaside! Your clan will enjoy playing and relaxing on the massive expanse of sandy beaches that run along the ocean. In addition to amazing beaches, Seaside is home to The Funland Entertainment Center (201 Broadway St.), which is the largest arcade on the North Oregon Coast and has been around since 1931. There your little gamers will entertain themselves for hours with skee-ball, bumper cars, mini golf and so much more. Then head to the Seaside Carousel Mall where you and your kids will find a beautiful replica of a classic carousel that can take the whole tribe for a musical ride ( (300 Broadway St.).While you’re at it, make sure you hit Schweitert’s Cone & Candy (406 Broadway St.) for saltwater taffy and chocolate-dipped treats, including bacon-topped Twinkies. Then, head west 1 block, north 3 blocks and 1 block west again to go feed the seals and let the little ones touch a starfish at Seaside Aquarium (200 N. Promenade).
Located between Astoria and Seaside on the Oregon coast, Fort Stevens offers your family a unique adventure. In between hours of the best beach combing around on beautiful beaches your crew will find excitement and wonder exploring a historic shipwreck and a military fort.
Once you’ve gotten a good history lesson in, grab your bikes and take them for a spin on the nine miles of paved bicycle paths or don your hiking boots and hit the six miles of trails that take you through a wide variety of habitats including spruce forests, wetlands and dunes. While the water is probably still a bit cold, nearby Coffenbury Lake has two swimming areas, a picnic area, restrooms and boat ramp if you want to spend a day on the water.
If you are up for pitching your tent, Fort Stevens has a campground with six tent sited or try glamping in one of the 15 yurts that are offered. If camping isn’t your style, there are also 11 deluxe cabins to spend the night in. Five of the 11 are pet friendly, so your furry family members can join you!
Beaches may be fun, but the High Desert holds its own when it come to family fun and the best outdoor activities? If your family loves the fresh air then you just can’t go wrong with a weekend in Sun River. Visit Sunriver Resort to reserve a room at the Sunriver Lodge Village, a Sun River Lodge or one of their vacation homes or condos. You’ll want to bring your bikes — there are over 35 miles of paved paths that will keep little legs busy all day long. If water play is more appealing to your crew, you can rent canoes or kayaks, ride ponies, play at the park playground, and hike to Benham Falls. The top attraction is the resort’s Cove Aquatic Center. The Cove Aquatic Center offers visitors year-round swimming. The center features an indoor and outdoor pool, jetted spas, private outdoor cabanas, an indoor and outdoor waterslide, a gently flowing eddy, a nature walk and discovery area, lakeside trails, and a special lawn where you can soak up the sun.
If a beautiful mountain escape is like what your are looking for, Mt. Rainier is the perfect destination. With a National park that boasts over 130 trails for your and your family to enjoy, there is more to explore than your family can possibly fit in in a weekend. Having a hard time choosing what to do? Go on a wildflower hike or make your way to majestic waterfalls for and afternoon of awe.
To add some adventure to your trip, get up close and persona with the wild life at NW Trek. They offer Keeper tours that bring you eye to eye with the local animal residents.
Rainier is well worth a weekend trip. Consider renting a rustic cabin for your getaway. Three Bears Lodge offers eight cabins just outside the year-round Paradise entrance to the national park in Ashford. The cabins accommodate groups of all sizes. Some of the cabins even come with highchairs, boosters, toys, cribs and anything else you could imagine you might need. All of the cabins have fully equipped kitchens that have the supplies for a complimentary waffle breakfast. If you choose this lodging option, the only thing you need to bring with you is food.
Bend
162.9 miles
Families flock to Bend from all over the country for its unmatched outdoor recreation and adventures. You’ll have to wait until late Spring May 1st) but prepare to get wet and wild on the Deschutes River with Sun Country Tours—their guides can take you on a white water rafting excursion or a relaxing tour down the river by stand up paddle board or inner tube. Just a little further south on 97, you’ll find the world-renowned Smith Rock; climbers come to the area for an opportunity to scale the sheer walls of Monkey Face. Your little monkeys may not be ready to climb like a pro, but book a day with the guides at Chockstone Climbing Guides and they will be well on their way. All of the required gear is provided and you will feel safe in the hands of these climbing experts.
Mt.Bachelor Village gives traveling families a variety of lodging options. Rent a hotel room, a river view condo or a vacation home. There is something available to fit every family budget and all options come with amenities like indoor and outdoor pools, playgrounds, golf courses and access to biking and hiking paths.
When in Bend, do like the locals and hit the breweries. Stop by the iconic Deschutes Brewery for some true Central Oregon flair. You will enjoy a selection of award-winning craft beer and hand-crafted ales. And if you are craving a good burger, they won’t disappoint. 10 Barrel is another local brewery that offers up fantastic brews along with outdoor fire pits and plenty of room for kids to be kids.
Astoria
What would Memorial Day Weekend be without a little Ocean air? This historic town sits where the forest meets the sea, and your family meets a good time! Started by Scandinavians, fur traders, Lewis and Clark, and named for John Jacob Astor, the city boasts a mix of all those influences perfectly. Admire the lovely Victorian houses on the hilltops, stop by Finn Ware for some Scandinavian-inspired goods (like salty licorice!), or check out Lewis and Clark’s 1805 winter camp at Fort Clatsop.
In town, don’t miss a walk along the pier and a stop at Frite and Scoop ice cream available for curbside pickup. Then head to theColumbia River Maritime Museum, especially if you’re little ones are fans of boats. This small museum does a really great job at offering interesting and dynamic exhibits, and you can even step aboard a real floating lighthouse ship! You’ll look at the river outside differently once you learn how dangerous it actually is to the ships sailing it.
Stay at the Cannery Pier Hotel, built on the site of an old cannery, 600 feet over the water. You’ll get views of the real working boats that ply the waters, and you can rent bikes to explore even more.
Across the river in Washington, take a day to explore Cape Disappointment, which is much better than it sounds (someone had a bad day there!). Clamber over rocks to scan the waters for whales, who tend to migrate in March. The numerous hiking options include a great lighthouse, and you can warm up inside the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center, which marks the end of the group’s epic journey to the Pacific.
For a stay on the Washington side of the river, check out the Sou’wester Lodge in Seaview. Just two hours from DTLA, Cuyama Buckhorn is a roadside resort that is big on style (mid-century meets western cowboy vibes) and locally-sourced goods from the Valley of Hidden Enchantment. Although Avalon is Catalina Island's most popular destination (here's our guide to spending the weekend in Avalon with kids if you're looking for something less rustic), there's an island adventure on the island's lesser well-known west end via the tiny town of Two Harbors. Hop aboard the Catalina Express and enjoy beautiful Pacific views as you cruise from San Pedro to Two Harbors. The trip takes under two hours and once you're there, outdoor activities are the name of the game.
Family Perks: Families can kayak, hike, fish or spend a memorable day snorkeling the clear blue waters. Two Harbors also offers a unique opportunity for a family camping trip! Palm Springs? Check. Joshua Tree? Check, check. What about Pioneertown? Say what? This little town, located 40 minutes north of Palm Springs (and just 10 minutes from Joshua Tree) looks straight out of the Old West—and for good reason—the area was actually built as a set for for movie studios in the 1940s, complete with a saloon, bank and stables. Today, you can still stroll through pedestrian-friendly downtown Pioneertown, where no cars are allowed—it's "Hoof & Foot Only," as the signs say.

We’ve all heard the expression, “The days are long but the years are short.” And that has never felt truer than when you realize your snuggly newborn has suddenly transformed into a toddler who’s holding your hand for a walk around the block. (Sniff, sniff.). Throughout the first year, your little one will go from one movement milestone to the next. Here’s what to expect, along with tips to foster curiosity and safe exploration of their exciting world.
Like any milestone, babies follow their own timetables. If you have any concerns about their development, talk to your pediatrician.
Is tummy time always a favorite activity? Nope. Most newborns prefer to be held, rather than doing this hard work. Tummy time helps build head, arm, and neck muscles that pave the way for more mobility. Seven weeks is a good time to try placing your baby on their tummy a couple times a day. They may only be able to keep their bobble head up for a few seconds, but they’ll build up to longer lengths of time. Don’t give up, even if you’re seeing some fussing. Distraction with a favorite toy in front helps shift their focus.
Let’s roll
All of that upper body strength building sets the scene for rolling, starting around four months. Going from front to back is more common than rolling from back to front at first, but rolling progression isn’t an exact science. One thing’s for sure: once they start, they won’t want to stop. Moving from one end of the living room to the other is fun for budding explorers. Keep a constant eye on your traveling baby and make sure childproofing is in place.
Sitting on top of the world
Anywhere from four months to eight months, you may see signs of your tot trying to sit. Good head control is important for sitting to be successful. You can support the gradual process by seating them upright on your lap often. When they’ve built up the strength to sit on their own, make sure it’s on a soft activity mat (not unattended on a couch or bed) and that you’re very close by to catch them should they topple back. This exciting new posture gives their favorite toys a whole new vantage point!
Cute crawling
Sitting unsupported (with the ability to independently move into and out of a seated position), rocking on all fours, and rolling are the major clues that crawling comes next. This movement milestone usually occurs between 7-10 months. Place their favorite toys just out of reach so they eagerly crawl to get to them. Some babies create their own unique “scoot” and work their way straight to walking (skipping crawling altogether!). It’s especially important that secure baby gates block the stairs.
Cruising (cool shades, optional)
The next step towards walking is pulling up, followed by cruising. Usually between 8-12 months, your busy baby will start using furniture and crib bars to stand tall and see their world. (Dressers, TV stands, and bookshelves should be securely mounted to the wall in case they want to use them as “props.”) They’ll also use furniture to support them as they shuffle around. The more opportunities you give babies to move (even if they’re unsteady and you’re in a constant state of panic—welcome to parenthood!), the better. You can walk with your baby, by holding onto both of their hands as they take little steps.
We’ve got a walker!
Alas, all that muscle strengthening, coordination, balance, and confidence building has led to walking. Many babies’ take their first steps around their first birthday (but it can happen earlier or later). It’ll start with a few wobbly steps and lots of wobbly falls. But the more practice, the more confidence and control. You’ll see your baby become able to walk in different directions, and even squat to pick something up and continue on their way! Indoors, your little one doesn’t need shoes. Walking around barefoot or in socks greatly supports healthy foot development. But if you’re heading outside on a walk, closed-toe, flexible shoes provide excellent support and protection.
How you can encourage exploration.
Boost resilience. Falls happen. Stay close by and provide reassurance after a fall that it’s okay and they can try again!
Add a new toy into the rotation. Push toys can help little ones work on standing and moving from place to place with some extra “help.”
Let them roam. You may be used to putting them in the stroller, swing, and activity center throughout the day. Try to minimize the use of those contraptions and give them lots of time to move about and work on their new skills.
Create new ways to explore. Who knew Tupperware and spatulas were so exciting? Put together a baby-safe (low) cabinet full of kitchen objects like plastic bowls and wooden spoons. Let them sort, stack, and bang.
Help them “help” you. While it’s not the most efficient way to get things done, opportunities to be helpful are wonderful for giving babies a sense of independence. Whether that’s sorting socks or cleaning up toys, little tasks go a long way.
Add a pet to the mix! Even though they’re little, babies and toddlers can learn from their parents how to care for and be kind to animals. They can help with getting supplies ready, joining you for walks, adding water to the dog bowl when it’s low and providing plenty of snuggles to your furry family member.
Before you hear those first precious words, your baby is already hard at work communicating. From crying to cooing, smiling to waving, babies continue to amaze their sleep deprived parents with just how much they have to “say.” There are lots of ways to encourage your child’s continued growth during this exciting milestone. And it’s as simple as making enthusiastic animal noises when you’re pushing the stroller (no one will judge, we promise!).

Point with purpose. This non-verbal gesture plays a big role in getting the verbal part going! Point at things you see when you’re on the go to build their vocabulary. When your child is excited and points, you’ll learn a lot from them too! Does your kiddo always point to the page with the kitten or light up when you see a neighbor’s dog on walk? Hint hint: Could be a sign you should add a furry family member to your crew. And if you do find yourself with Fido, your little one will be a great helper when they are able to speak more words and engage with their new BFF!
You’re pretty familiar with crying as a way of communicating. (Hungry? Tired? Memo received!). The addition of sweet “cooing” to your kiddo’s vocal repertoire around months 1-2 is a nice change of pace. You’ll be compelled to coo right back for your first two-sided convos! Anywhere from six weeks to three months, your baby will show off those first smiles (and not just facial expressions from having gas). This is an exciting milestone because it feels like you two are really connecting.
All about those belly laughs
Thought it couldn’t get any sweeter? At around three or four months old, babies start to laugh. The sillier you are, the more giggles you get. Whether you’re blowing raspberries on their tummy or making an elated “woof!” sound when reading a story about pets, laughter goes a long way in boosting budding communication skills. Add different voices, movements, and funny sound effects to books and songs. You may be a “Wheels on the Bus” soloist for quite awhile, but eventually you’ll be part of the cutest duet. Pro tip: throwing in a “pop” sound to peek-a-boo will really blow their mind.
The more you talk, the more they learn! Simply narrating what you’re doing (“I’m changing your diaper now!”) or referring to objects and saying the name (“The cat is on the couch”) helps babies gain an understanding of their world. You’ll feel like you’re repeating yourself a lot, but that’s a good thing when it comes to word recognition. You can do this from day 1!
Read, read, read. It’s never too early to read to your baby. Aside from helping spur language development, it’s wonderful quality time and can easily be incorporated into your daily routine. Start with simple books that have colorful drawings or photos. Say the name of what you’re looking at (“green apples!” or “striped cat”). Board books are great because they’re sturdy, can’t be ripped, and hold up to drool and curious baby nibbles! Touch and feel books are also exciting for little hands to explore.
Say it with signs
Baby sign language is an effective way to help your baby express what they want well before they can say the words. At around six months, start teaching simple signs for common objects, activities, or people. “More” and “milk” are some good go-tos to get started. It may take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months for your kiddo to catch on, but the more you demonstrate, the better. Signing can help ease frustration when communicating (for both of you!).
Babble on!
8-10 month-olds seem to have a lot to say… even if you don’t have a clue what that is exactly. You might catch some “ma-ma” and “da-da” consonant/vowel sounds, although they’re probably not saying them intentionally yet. Heart melting first words will delight you anywhere from 12-18 months.
Practice those royal waves
Babies love to mimic… especially waving! Somewhere around 9 months, they may start saying hi and bye using this adorable gesture. Heads up: it’s a real crowd-pleaser on walks in the stroller. As your baby gets older, you’ll notice their imitation game gets stronger. They’ll love to copy you clapping and making silly faces and gestures. Remember, this fun back and forth is their version of having a conversation!
Show excitement. Babies pick up on your cues. If you’re engaged and respond with interest (even if the fire truck isn’t that exciting to you) they’ll pick up on those positive (and talkative!) vibes!

Be sure to find some shady spots to stop for breaks along the way. Scale back rigorous outdoor exercise when the sun is blazing. Even if your pup loves to endlessly chase a tennis ball, don’t overdo it. Keep in mind that panting is not common for cats, so if you notice your kitty breathing heavier than usual, call your veterinarian.
Bring Water on-the-Go
Hydration is just as important for dogs as it is for people. Whether you’re strolling around the neighborhood or hanging out in a friend’s backyard, bring along water for your dog and offer it regularly. (Remember, Fido can’t exactly tell you, “I’m thirsty!). Portable dog water dispenser bottles and collapsible travel dog bowls are great options for easy water breaks on the go. Add a few ice cubes when possible.
And Speaking of Water…
Some pets love getting wet! Give your pup a refreshing mist with the hose when you’re watering the garden. When you set out the baby pool or turn on the sprinkler for your kiddos, don’t be surprised if your dog wants to get it on the action, too.
Keeping your pet in the car isn’t safe and can lead to discomfort, illness, and in worst cases—death. When a car is turned off, the temperature inside can rise to dangerous levels quickly. So run your errands solo, and leave your pet at home!

Protect Their Paws
Heading out for a walk is probably one of your pet’s favorite pastimes, but if the driveway or sidewalk is extra hot, it may cause injury to their paws. Check to see if the pavement is too toasty by pressing your fingertips on it for a few seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s not right for your dog either.
Know the Signs of Heatstroke
It’s possible for pets to become overheated and suffer from heatstroke if they’re exposed to too much heat and humidity. According to the Humane Society, some signs of heatstroke include heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, excessive thirst, lethargy, fever, dizziness, lack of coordination, profuse salivation, vomiting, a deep red or purple tongue, seizure and unconsciousness. The risk for heatstroke may depend on the animal’s age, weight, pre-existing illnesses, and breed. For example, boxers, pugs, shih tzus, and other dogs and cats with short muzzles will have a much harder time breathing in extreme heat. If you notice these signs, call your vet or head to an animal hospital immediately.

Who doesn’t love the Bavarian town of Leavenworth? With tons of shops and things to do, it’s a hit with everyone and there really isn’t a bad time to visit, although if you are not a fan of crowds you’ll want to avoid staying during the weekend. Even so, we found a perfect space that is just far enough from downtown (about 10 minutes) that you’ll feel as if you’re away from it all. This 4,000 square foot with “Gemini Lodge” sits on 12 private acres. The three levels feature four bedrooms and three bathrooms, an amazing kitchen and a dining room with French doors that lead out to the wrap around deck with a view of the mountains. Play in the pool, soak in the hot tub and enjoy an outdoor barbecue when the day is done. This log cabin also features a spiral staircase, a beautiful fireplace, flat screen TV and even a foosball table upstairs.
Just a short ferry boat ride will get you to this home away from home, but you’ll feel as if you’re a lot farther away. This Victorian-styled home (with three bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms) is located at the end of a dead end street, so your kids can make as much noise as they want in the pool and practically nobody will hear them! And you won’t care either since you’ll be engrossed looking out at the fantastic view of Port Gamble Bay from one of the house’s two balconies.
