Fun and Frugal: 11 Free Things to Do in Seattle with Kids

You won’t need your wallet with so many free activites for the whole family

Fun, kid-friendly activities for Seattle families don’t have to break the bank. And since we’re all trying to save a bit of money these days, being frugal with kids’ activities can help. Earn your adulting star today when you head to one of these places to get your play on with the kids. From play areas to petting farms to story times (almost) every day of the week, we’ve mapped out our favorite free things to do in Seattle for families.

1. Read Our Lips: Free Story Times

Sit back and enjoy a good story at one of the many free storytimes around the city. The King County Library System offers an array of storytimes for every age and in different languages so all families can fall in love with a good book.

Families can also look beyond the library for storytimes. Head to Island Books on Mercer Island to enjoy Saturday storytime with Nancy Stewart, or check out the storytimes at your local Barnes and Noble. Add a little drama to your storytime at the Frye Art Museum’s Small Frye: Storytelling + Art, held on first Wednesdays. There’s also Inclusive & Cultural Storytime on the first Saturdays at the Highline Heritage Museum in Burien.

Remember that many children’s museums also host storytime as part of their programming. If you’ve got a membership, you can add them to your list of free things to do in Seattle. Storytimes are held daily at Seattle Children’s Museum, except Tuesday when they’re closed. But that’s okay because there’s storytime on Tuesday mornings at KidsQuest.

2. Get Outside

Speaking of storytime, families can also get outside and get reading when they check out the latest Pop-Up StoryWalk installation along a trail or at a nearby park. If one isn’t installed, you can still take the kids on a hike at one of our favorite city trails. The trails at Discovery Park, Seward Park, and the UW Arboretum never get old, and neither does a trip out to Maple Valley to check out the Gnomes Trail. If you’ve got a Discover Pass, you can chase waterfalls near Seattle with the kids pretty much all year long.

Even if you don’t, you can hike with a Park Ranger on the Eastside. The City of Bellevue offers free ranger programs at Lewis Creek, Mercer Slough, and Lake Hills Greenbelt multiple times monthly. While programs vary and require pre-registration, they’re all family-friendly and are a great excuse to get the kids outside.

Not so into hiking? Try a family bike ride.

3. Free Indoor Playgrounds

If you have a kid under five, you’ve logged a few hours at one of the many Seattle Community Centers drop-in play areas. But did you know you can get the crazies out for free any day of the week? That’s right. The community center drop-in programs are free with a Quick Card (register during your first visit) and are open for play with limited hours, Monday through Friday. Are you looking for a weekend option? Try Green Lake’s playroom—it’s open on Saturdays in the winter.

A new free toddler play gym opened at Salvation Army Seattle White Center Community Center. Drop in for playtime Monday through Friday from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. with your kids (ages 2-6) to enjoy toys, mats, and slides.

You can also take to the mall and pair a little shopping with your play experience. With the Kids Cove in Bellevue Square, the covered play area at U-Village, and the free kids play area at Westfield Southcenter, shopping malls are about more than just spending money these days. Although it’s not a playspace, Crossroads Mall’s Music on the Market Stage is free entertainment for the family that runs each weekend.

4. Visit The Center for Wooden Boats

This museum, dedicated to preserving and documenting maritime history, might be a frugal parent’s best friend. Kids love wandering the docks, getting up close and personal with tugboats, canoes, and sailboats (not to mention the seaplanes taking off nearby). If you can plan ahead, consider signing up for a free peapod boat rental on Wednesdays through Sundays. Or stop by on the second or fourth Thursdays for Tugboat Story Time at the floating Boathouse (be sure to check the events calendar to verify tugboat story time is running that week).

The warmer months offer even more free things to do in Seattle at the Center for Wooden Boats. On the first Thursday of the month, take advantage of the free Toy Boat Building at South Lake Union and Cama Beach on Saturdays. On weekends and first Thursdays beginning in June, the Center for Wooden Boats brings out ten beautifully crafted wooden boats for passers-by to test on the South Lake Union Boat Pond from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. ($5 suggested donation). Race them, time ’em, let them float leisurely along. Any way your littlest mate plays will be time well spent on the water.

The spray park at Lake Union Park is another fantastic and free way to spend a sunny day here. Pack a swimsuit and sunscreen during summer for this added maritime adventure. Remember that nearby MOHAI is always free for kids under 14, and the Kid-Struction Zone is open.

5. Sit & Sip at Kid-Friendly Coffee Shops

Hot coffee or tea and comfy spaces where kids can play make for a perfect outing any day of the week. From Sip and Ship in Ballard and Greenwood to Ballard Firehouse Coffee to Kaffeeklatch in Lake City and Third Place Commons in Lake Forest Park, there are a plethora of indoor havens that will keep parents and kids happy, all for the price of a cuppa Joe. Popular Eastside spots like mom-owned Bellden Cafe, the Issaquah Coffee Company, Coffeeholic House, and Mercurys Coffee Co.’s spacious (and busy) locations offer the same.

6. See a Kindiependent Concert

If there’s one thing toddlers can’t get enough of, it’s a chance to bust a move. That’s why we’re adding Mount Baker’s Kindiependent Kids Rock Series to our favorite free things to do in Seattle with kids. You can get tickets to see one of the coolest kindie rockers around for just $5 a person. Concerts run through April 1, 2023 for the current series.

7. Visit Animals

If Old McDonald is one of the songs in your musical repertoire these days, a trip to Kelsey Creek Farm in Bellevue is an absolute must. Kids love visiting with the cows, horses, bunnies, chickens, sheep, pigs, and more at this fabulous (free) farm in the heart of Bellevue. Families can also explore the walking trails that wind through the park, over the creek, and by the pastures. Bring a lunch to enjoy if it’s a dry day, and be sure to hit the playground when you’re there too.

But that’s not the only place to find furry and feathery friends that are always a safe bet for a fun day out with toddlers. There are lots of other places that don’t require you to drop any money to get your animal fix. Visit the horses at Woodinville stables, meet the resident animals at Farrel-McWhirter Farm Park if you’re on the Eastside. In the city you can look for ducks and turtles at Golden Gardens Park in the little pond by the bridge, grab a pair of binoculars and head to Discovery Park to look for more than 270 species of birds, or even stop by your neighborhood pet shop.

8. Explore Seattle Center

There’s a reason the Seattle Center is one of the top visitor destinations—it’s a blast! And you don’t have to spend a dime to keep the kids engaged. Let them wander around the sculpture garden, create cool sounds at the Sonic Bloom solar-powered art installation, run around the fountain (or jump in when it’s warm enough), play at the always-fun Artists at Play playground, and emote on the stage. 

Time your visit with a free Festál program, and you’ve got your day planned. And if you’ve got a membership to either Seattle Children’s Museum, MoPOP, or PacSci, that’s yet another option for free playtime in the heart of the city. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Discovery Center is just a hop, skip, and jump away. Admission is always free, Tuesdays through Saturdays, during regular hours. You can even hop on the monorail (it’s just a few bucks for adults, and kids under 5 are free) to see Seattle from above.

9. Hit a Local Park or Playground

Never underestimate the power of a playground when you need an impromptu, free kid-friendly activity in the city. In fact, it’s one of the best free things to do in Seattle with kids, year-round, thanks to our mild climate. Seattle kids and families know how to handle the rain (hello, Muddy Buddy and a change of clothes for the car), so even during the wettest months, this is a trusted go-to activity.

10. Spend Time at a Museum

Museums and toddlers can be hit or miss, so it’s hard to cough up admission fees for kids when a melt down and early exit are a distinct possibility. Fortunately, we’ve found some great museums that offer times for free admission for kids and have places toddlers can play and explore. Enjoy Free First Thursdays at these area favorites:

You can also score free museum passes (yes, we said free) through The Seattle Public Library and King County Library to some of our favorite places including: KidsQuest Children’s Museum, Seattle Aquarium, MoPOP, Wing Luke Museum, National Nordic Museum, Woodland Park Zoo, and more. These tickets require reservations in advance and they go quickly.

If you’re south of the city or are up for a drive, remember the Children’s Museum of Tacoma is always pay-as-you-will admission, and the Washington State History Museum offers free admission on the third Thursday of the month from 3 p.m.-8 p.m.

11. Visit a Lighthouse

The beaches around the Burrows Island Light Station offer a unique rocky landscape, which adds to the overall charm and attractiveness of the area. Families can enjoy the scenic views and experience the natural beauty of the surroundings. While the lighthouse may be closed to visitors during renovations, the Burrows Island Light Station grounds are open daily. Your crew can still explore and appreciate the outbuildings, adding to the overall experience of the visit.

Point Wilson Lighthouse is one of the iconic landmarks in Fort Worden State Park, situated just 60 miles northwest of Seattle, making it a perfect spot for a day trip. To gain access to this magnificent sight, bring your Washington State Discover Pass. The pass allows you to explore the lighthouse and the vast 432-acre park surrounding it. Point Wilson Lighthouse is particularly intriguing because its fully automated system allows it to operate seamlessly without a full-time operator.

As parents, this makes choosing a preschool paramount. From the school environment and education philosophy to the curriculum, teachers, and staff, there’s a lot to consider when touring facilities.

1. How does your curriculum differ from other preschools?

Preschool can be a great launching pad for kindergarten, helping your little learner grow as a whole (cognitively, socially, and emotionally). As every school fosters a different educational philosophy, it’s important to investigate the curriculum to ensure it’s balanced to your educational standards. For example, a well-rounded program incorporates early math skills, literacy, language development, creative expression, music, and playtime.

These picturesque play spots deliver serene coastal views, cool ocean breezes, and maybe even some whale or dolphin spotting if you’re lucky. We’ve rounded up seven of our favorite beachside parks perfect for your next play date hang.

Kellogg Park

Right near the boardwalk in the heart of La Jolla Shores, you’ll find beautiful Kellogg Park. With a large grassy area that’s perfect for a game of frisbee or an afternoon picnic, as well as a top-notch playground, it’s one of our absolute must-dos in the city. The “Respect the Ocean” themed playground features a rubber surface system offering more support for tiny feet. There are also tons of swings and interesting structures to climb. During your visit, make sure to check out the life-size bronze statue of a baby gray whale that’s a perfect size for little explorers to climb. The family-friendly space has plenty of restrooms and showers if you fancy dipping your feet into the ocean, and the parking lot is open until 10 p.m.

Insider’s Tip: This park gets busy on weekends so make sure to arrive early if you want to claim some prime picnic space on the grass. Also, one block away on Avenida de la Playa, families can find a variety of cafés, shops, and sports rentals, as well as the Birch Aquarium just up the hill.

Fletcher Cove Park
Perched high above the Pacific in Solana Beach, popular Fletcher Cover Park reopened its playground this summer after a $400,000 refurbishment. Improvements to the playground include a new shaded structure to keep kiddos cool, a blue rubberized surface with a whimsical whale design, as well as new play equipment like a slide, monkey bars, swing set, ADA-accessible disc net climber, and stationary boogie board. The playground was purposely designed to accommodate a wider range of age groups and features new activities like a mini clubhouse and sensory panels for the under-5 set. If you have a basketball player in the family, they’ll also dig the new half-court that’s been completely resurfaced and leveled up with a new hoop and backboard. There are also restroom facilities on site, a free parking lot, and plenty of street parking.

Tidelands Park
With scenic views of San Diego Bay and the Coronado Bridge, Tidelands Park has 22 acres of amenities to keep littles entertained all day long. There is an inclusive playground designed for kids of all abilities, four baseball fields, exercise stations, a fishing pier, picnic areas, paths for rollerblading, breathtaking art installations, and a bike strand that extends from Silver Strand to Old Ferry Landing. Plus, there is a small sandy beach if kiddos get the itch to create a sandcastle masterpiece. Facilities are plenty as well with a large parking lot and plenty of restrooms.

Insider’s Tip: If you take follow the bike path to Old Ferry Landing, you can grab a bite to eat at one of many restaurants in the area or catch the ferry to San Diego—bring your bike aboard for no extra charge!

Powerhouse Park
If you’re looking for stunning views of the sea and updated playground equipment, Powerhouse Park should be on your list. Recently renovated, the park features an ocean-themed playground with instruments to bang on, plenty of swings, a great climbing structure, and a sand play area. There’s also plenty of grass for a rousing game of tag and some swell walking trails to explore. And the cherry on top is not only is there a beautiful view of the ocean, but kiddos get an amazing view of the train whenever it passes by. Win-win!

Insider’s Tip: Mornings are best to avoid the crowds and be sure to bring an extra change of clothes and a towel since kids will get messy playing in the sand. Also, pay attention to street parking signs—some spots are free for two hours, but there are metered spots available as well.

Spanish Landing Park
Spanish Landing Park gives families a dose of San Diego history along with beautiful views the marina. This very spot held the meeting of the 1769 Gaspar DePortola and Father Junípero Serra expeditions. So after you’ve Googled all of that and impressed the fam with your knowledge, you all can enjoy the groovy playground on the west side of the park, a sandy beach, interesting art displays, and plenty of picnic tables for a delightful afternoon meal together.

Moonlight Beach
Located in a magical part of Encinitas right on the ocean is Moonlight Beach. This family-friendly beach has waves that are perfect for surfing and boogie boarding, as well as a great beach-themed (and shaded) playground just steps from the sand. The bright blue and gold structure features a climbable surfboard, slides and tons of other fun nooks and crannies to explore. Next to the playground is a large grassy area that has picnic tables when your hungry brood is ready for a snack.

Tyson Street Park
Easy walking distance from the pier, Tyson Street Park features a playground that’s just about as close to the water as you can be without getting wet. There’s a jungle gym with views of the Pacific, a large grassy area to run and play, and lots of picnic tables and restrooms. If your kiddos are begging to take a dip after they check out the playground, the summer months are a great time to do it since they close the water to surfers during the season, making it ideal for swimmers and waders.

Insider’s Tip: The park and beach are accessible via the stairs on Pacific St. where there is plentiful metered parking.

Do Mosquito Patches Really Work? We Put Them to the Test

Do they do what they claim to do?

No matter how old you are, nobody is immune to those pesky mosquitoes, especially during the summertime. Whether outside by a campfire or in the backyard by the slip-n-slide, you or your kiddo have likely gotten a mosquito bite or three. If that sounds familiar, you might be looking for preventative measures to stop a bite before it happens or soothe an already itchy bite. Enter mosquito patches.

Most mosquito patches use well-known bug repellent ingredients to keep bugs like mosquitoes away—think citronella oil, lemongrass oil, peppermint oil, and geraniol. However, some mosquito patches also relieve bites once they’ve happened to minimize that annoying itch sensation.

As someone with sweet blood, I probably get 50 mosquito bites each year by simply going outside. I’m also the type of person who will scratch the heck out of them until they bleed (I know, it’s bad), but they are just so dang itchy sometimes. With that said, despite using insect repellent spray and bracelets, I’ve continued to get bit over the years, which is why I’ve decided to try patches this year.

I went on Amazon and purchased four different mosquito patches to see how they worked and whether or not they helped prevent these bothersome bites and soothe my already itchy ones.

BuzzPatch Mosquito Patch Stickers

To start my mosquito patch journey, I got my hands (or, shall I say, skin) on these colorful repellent stickers. The pack came with 60 vibrant stickers (10 sheets) with citronella oil and different funny faces to make them look more inviting. Although branded towards children, I had no problem using them as an adult since mosquitoes don’t discriminate.

As instructed on the packaging, I put these mosquito patches on my clothes before I went outside. I liked how I didn’t have to place it directly on my already sensitive skin, so extra brownie points were earned there. Plus, the instructions said they would last up to eight hours once applied, and sealed patches could be used for up to six months, so I appreciated their longevity.

Now onto the results: I didn’t get bit while wearing these stickers which was a bonus, but I did see countless mosquitoes flying around nearby. Essentially it got the job done, but I still had to swap some flies out of my general area. Personally, the scent of these stickers was a bit much for me as I’m sensitive to smell. If you’re looking at these for your kiddo, make sure they won’t be uncomfortable with the fragrance while in use.

Overall, for $15, I think this is a pretty solid choice for mosquito patches because they are comfortable, effective, and kid-friendly.

Cliganic Mosquito Repellent Stickers

The next time I braced myself to go in the great outdoors, I tried these essential oil-infused mosquito repellent patches. I placed a few on my clothes next to exposed areas of my body and let them do their magic.

I liked the circular shape of these patches and the fun images on each of them. They didn’t necessarily blend in with my clothes, but frankly, if it kept the bugs away, I didn’t care.

I found that peppermint oil and citronella oil did a great job of keeping the mosquitos away. As someone sensitive to smell, I appreciated how they were fragrant enough to be effective but not too much that I’d get nauseous.

With that said, this pack of 90 stickers costs $10, making it a steal. Adults can get 10-15 uses out of each pack and roughly 20-25 for children, so it’s worth the money.

Mosquito Guard 60-Pack Mosquito Repellent Stickers

This pack fell short of the rest with its overly plain and boring design. I mean, it was good when I had to wear them to a work engagement, but otherwise, they were pretty lifeless.

As advised on the packaging, I put these on my clothing near the exposed areas of my body. Unfortunately, I still got bit. Now, I can’t necessarily say the patch is at fault because, at the end of the day, there could be several reasons why I got bit. Although it was just two bites, it was still more than I got using the other two mosquito patches putting these towards the bottom of the list.

Plus, the smell of these stickers was very strong. I couldn’t keep it near my short sleeves because the smell was too pungent. Thinking back, I wish I placed these on my socks by my ankles to prevent bites down below.

Although they weren’t too pricey at $12, I was still disappointed with my purchase since they weren’t as effective as I hoped.

Quitch Bug Bite Itch Relief Patch

Unlike the mosquito patches above, these were designed to be placed directly on the bites after they occurred. For the sake of this story, it was good I got bit while wearing the other patches because I put these to the test.

I placed the patches directly over my bites and noticed a significant relief in the itch and discomfort in minutes. According to the packaging, the stickers apply pressure to reduce the appearance of swelling, while the aloe and witch hazel soothes and relieves discomfort.

Roughly after 10 minutes of putting on the patch, I didn’t have that uncontrollable urge to scratch my skin off. My favorite part was that they didn’t irritate my skin when putting them on and taking them off.

Overall Thoughts on Mosquito Patches

These mosquito patches were pretty effective in preventing bites and soothing pre-existing bites. I think they are easier than bug spray, which doesn’t tend to get the job done as well and can get super sticky.

With that said, it’s important to read each package for guidance on how many stickers to use as they vary based on age, height, and placement.
