Radical! Today, American Girl announced the launch of its first historical character in three years, Courtney Moore. She is a total ‘80s girl whose big, bright and bold ideas inspire today’s girls to find their inner hero to accomplish great things.

Growing up in 1986, Courtney’s story reflects the pop culture of the decade from sky-high hair, neon-colored fashions, music television and video gaming to major historical moments surrounding women in government and space exploration, as well as larger cultural shifts around blended families and emerging technology.

Courtney

Courtney comes to life via an 18-inch doll with curly sandy-blonde hair that can be worn in a high side pony with scrunchie, plus accessories like a pretend cassette player and tape, colorful bangle bracelets, and pretend Lip Smacker lip balm. The Courtney doll arrives wearing a high-waisted denim skirt, a bright blue off the shoulder crop top, plus white faux-leather slouchy boots. Girls can add tons of new looks with Courtney’s 13-piece mix-and-match ‘80s fashion collection and spend hours playing with Courtney’s Bedroom Set with over 25 pieces—including a hot pink bunk bed, two rainbow comforters and pillows, and a see-through phone that lights up and rings.

Courtney

Courtney’s world also includes several licensed products of ‘80s classics—including Courtney’s Caboodles and Hair Accessories Kit with a real mini Caboodle, plus Courtney’s Care Bears Pajamas for both girls and dolls and Courtney’s Care Bears Sleeping Bag Set. Fans can also level up with Courtney’s doll-sized PAC-MAN Arcade Game that plays like the real thing with multiple levels.

Courtney

Any 80s girl can tell you how obsessed they were when American Girl launched in 1986. Courtney is no different. She has her own mini American Girl Molly doll, one of the first three historical characters released by the then newly-founded Pleasant Company. Molly comes in a replica of a Pleasant Company doll box, a mini version of the original Meet Molly book, and even a mini 1980s Pleasant Company catalog.

Courtney

“The ‘80s are back, and we’re thrilled to celebrate this pop culture-defining decade with girls and their parents through Courtney,” says Jamie Cygielman, General Manager of American Girl. “For nearly 35 years, American Girl’s historical characters have helped to bridge the past and present, while providing inspiring role models through immersive storytelling and imaginative play. Likewise, Courtney’s story illustrates how to create positive change by standing up to fear, finding strength in every challenge, and developing empathy for others—qualities that are timeless and more important than ever. And to further our mission to help build girls of strong character and confidence, we’re partnering with Girls Who Code to help change the game when it comes to influencing female leadership in the fields of computer science and technology.”

Written by Kellen Hertz, the two-book series introduces girls to Courtney Moore, an avid gamer growing up with her blended family in the fictional town of Orange Valley, CA. Courtney loves going to the mall, especially the arcade, where she’s one of the top-scoring PAC-MAN players. But Courtney doesn’t only play video games, she’d like to create them and bring more girl characters to the forefront. When given a chance to create her own video game, Courtney looks to real-life heroes—like her mom, who’s running for mayor, as well as the astronauts on the Space Shuttle Challenger—as inspiration to invent a female superhero who’s bold, brave, and gives Courtney the courage to speak up for the people and ideas she believes in.

Courtney Changes the Game
American Girl is partnering with Girls Who Code, a leading nonprofit that’s on a mission to close the gender gap in technology and change the image of what a computer programmer looks like and does. From now through Dec. 31, 2020, American Girl is matching customer donations dollar for dollar up to a maximum of $50,000 to support the organization’s programming and outreach to girls, including those from historically underrepresented minority groups. In addition, American Girl is providing a $5,000 scholarship to four deserving Girls Who Code members to help further their education in computer science or a related field. To learn more about how American Girl is helping Girls Who Code, visit americangirl.com/gwc.

“Girls are constantly online, using apps, playing games and more, that’s why it’s so important that they also see themselves on the other side of those products, actually building them,” says Reshma Saujani, CEO of Girls Who Code. “It’s our goal to show girls the power of learning this skill set so that they can code the future they want to live in and, ultimately, change the world.”

Visitors to American Girl retail stores on September 25 will receive a free Courtney craft and giveaway. And in early October, fans can “relax to the max” in an all-new ‘80s-themed immersive experience at American Girl Place-New York, featuring a Courtney-inspired bedroom with bunk beds and a revolving closet that mixes-and-matches her outfits, plus an ‘80s arcade with two real PAC-MAN video games to play.

A dedicated Courtney play site, goes live on Oct. 1, and includes free games and activities, like Courtney’s Mall Madness interactive experience; an ‘80s-inspired dance challenge tutorial; Courtney wallpapers and much more.

Maria Dueñas Jacobs shares a love for all things sparkly with her three girls. So she created Super Smalls! All products in the line are for all children and include jewelry, sunglasses and hair accessories that come in amazing packaging.

Heirloom Quality Blankets: Superstitchous

Superstitchous

The idea to create a luck-themed gift-worthy product came to Samira Khoshnood years ago, but a demanding job in tech left little time or energy to make much progress. In December 2019, while on maternity leave after the birth of her son, she launched Superstitchous. After searching for heirloom quality baby blankets that compliment her decor but unable to find exactly she was looking for, she set out to design a playful yet sophisticated collection of blankets that would be used and loved by people of any age. Superstitchous blankets are illustrated with symbols of good fortune from around the world, based on traditions thousands of years old. All blankets are designed in San Francisco by Samira and made in the USA by a second-generation family-owned mill, from environmentally-friendly upcycled cotton.

Turning Chaos into Beauty: GoodHangups

Leslie Pierson

Leslie Pierson created something every mom has dreamed of: a product that brings order to the chaos. Her inspiration? The prolific creativity of her artistic 6-year-old son. Like so many moms, she hated the idea of throwing away her son’s masterpieces but was tired of the mess they made on the fridge. So she invented GoodHangups. GoodHangups MagnaStickers can be used on almost any wall surface to hang up unframed items: without a hammer, a nail or a frame! If this product seems familiar, you may have caught Leslie on Shark Tank (where she scored a deal with Lori Greiner).

Ride-On Luggage: LIL FLYER

LIL FLYER

As a mother of a 3-year-old who traveled extensively within and outside of the country, Yen Brown realized it was getting more and more difficult as her son got older. Managing a crowded airport was no easy task. She had her "ah ha" moment as she watched parents plant their kids on top of rolling suitcases to navigate the busy airport, and when Amazon didn't have what she needed, she took the task up herself. After a brainstorm session in an airport that involved several napkin sketches, the idea for LIL Flyer was born. "What If we turn it sideways and add wheels to the bottom.  We can add a seat and a safety belt and maybe some grips for our son to hold?"  For almost an entire year Brown and her husband worked with manufacturing parters and traveled the world until her dream became a reality. The result is a ride-on suitcase that is functional, and most importantly gets kids excited for travel.

Getting your kids excited about a hair cut is almost as tough as getting them excited about a trip to the dentist. But thanks to the newly opened Snip-its Kids Salon at Crossroads Bellevue, stylists are not only trained in the latest kids’ hair trends, but also how to work with young, nervous clientele—making each visit to the salon a fun and memorable one. If your crew is in need of cut, trim or style, read on for the inside scoop on this kid-centric salon that is making kids feel special and pampered with every visit.

photo: Snip-its Kids Salon

The Important Details
Snip-its is conveniently located near the center of Bellevue Crossroads Shopping Center (near the food court and stage area) and offers a bright, exciting space for kids to get their hair cut, trimmed or styled. Focused on creating “magical experiences for kids and parents,” Snip-its employs specially trained stylists who love kids and it shows. Stylists are also certified by Autism Speaks to help make the whole hair-cutting experience a positive one for all.

About the Owner
Owner Duc Quan wants to make sure this often seen “task” of getting a hair cut is turned into something fun for kids along with an educational experience. That’s why he provides information to kids and parents about correct kids hygiene and age appropriate products. With a 4 1/2-year-old daughter himself, Quan knows a thing or two about kids. And his passion for good products for kids is seen on his shelves. The salon offers Snip-its brand shampoos, conditioners and styling products, plus a 100% vegan brand, Original Sprout and perennial mom-favorite, Moroccanoil.

Walk-ins Encouraged
Unlike many other kids’ hair salons, Snip-its is primarily walk-in only—great for when you don’t want to plan weeks in advance (who can?) or when your little monkey is suddenly drowning in hair. And while walk-in service can sometimes be tricky, Snip-its offers up to four stylists at any given time, activities in the waiting area and the food court and mall right next door, so wait times (generally no more than 5 minutes) go by in a blink. Psst! Bellevue Crossroads is full of ride-on mechanical toys to entertain tykes (think two-minute rides on an elephant or train for $.25), as well as kid faves like WiggleWorks kids, an awesome candy store and Creatively Yours, a ceramic studio that offers paint-it-yourself ceramics.

Perks That Come with Each Service
At the beginning of each appointment, haircut recipients receive a key-card-like pass to hold during their service. After their appointment (which can include a haircut, a shampoo & cut, added styling or just a simple bang trim), kids drop their passes into a special slot on a Magic Box to earn a cool prize. Computer tablets are also available during haircuts for pint-sized entertainment and fun accouterments are available as well (think sparkles, washable hair color or hair tinsel which is like a weave that stays in for a considerably long time). Higher-end hair accessories and toys are also available for sale.

Low-Sensory Appointments
If your little monkey needs a bit more of a relaxed or quiet environment or if he or she is feeling tentative about the hair-cutting process, Snip-its is more than accommodating. They offer specifically scheduled appointments at quiet times during the day and when the sounds and lights can be dimmed for your appointment.

More Than Hair
If your mini fashionista is into more than just amazing hair cuts, Snip-its also offers mini manis and pedis, ear-piercing, facials and even parties! Choose Glamour, Hollywood, Spa or Rock Star and let your little one get duded up with his or her pals in the nearby Community Room. After the glam treatment, partygoers get to walk the red carpet, catwalk or prance on stage in all their fabulousness.

Mark Your Calendars for the Grand Opening Party!
Everyone is invited to come and check out the salon at the official Grand Opening Party on Saturday, March 25 at 2 p.m. Eric Haines (a Cirque du Soleil entertainer!) will be on-hand to wow the crowds with a variety of amazing feats (think stilts, unicycle and other silly fun). Plus, face painting will be offered, along with music, a free spin of the prize wheel (you could win a 6-pack of hair cuts!) and more.

Good to Know
This is the first franchise location of Snip-its in the Pacific NW, but Quan has his sights set on opening four more locations in areas such as Bothell, Bellevue, Issaquah, Lynnwood and Greenwood. Keep an eye on their website for more Snip-its fun for everyone!

Hayes Valley is giving everyone a reason to visit these days. Now parents of stylish littles have even more incentive to swing by the hip SF hood (as if the current bounty of indie shops & eateries wasn’t appealing enough!). Decidedly bright and baby drool-worthy, the recently-opened Kira Kids is happily curated with organic kids’ clothing and accessories, all made in the USA. Extra noteworthy: all clothing prints are designed exclusively by the shop’s owner and Bay Area native, Christine Tang. This is the second brick and mortar store for Tang, who opened her original location in Los Altos.

Smarter (Softer) Clothes
Kira Kids strives to work with local factories to produce high-quality, sustainable garments for kids and babies. For this reason alone, we majorly back the forward-thinking boutique. Of course, stocking the sweetest array of ever-so-soft clothing helps, too. Sustainable (check!), buttery soft (check!), cuter than cute (CHECK!). In addition to clothing, Kira offers plenty of kid-centric extras. A few of our favorites include STATE backpacks, colorful greeting cards from Thimblepress, and the addictive hair accessories of Hello Shiso.

One-of-a-Kind
From tacos to spaceships, to smiles and city-dedicated styles, Tang’s youthful prints evoke joy and happiness with every thread (yay!). There is a “yay”design, btw. In addition to prints and graphics, Kira offers a more classic “basics” collection featuring solid hues and stripes. The shop’s logo features a crown which, according to its blog, “represents leadership and at Kira we believe that kids are the leaders of the future…We encourage kids and adults alike to have the courage to explore, break the rules and create something positive and new for the world while having fun!” High fives to that mantra!

Whether in the market for a shower gift or overhauling your kiddo’s wardrobe, we suggest factoring in a Kira Kids visit the next time you’re in Hayes Valley.  After all, the best kind of love is local love—a kind reminder to shop small and local this holiday season.

If you’re already hooked on Instagram (we know you are!), this post isn’t going to help ween you from your addiction. We’ve sifted through feeds to find some of the hippest moms (and their equally hip babies) that the photo-sharing site has to offer. From expertly outfitted baby bumps to moccasin-clad bambino toes, check out our picks for the must-follow style maven mamas.

The mom with the chicest laid-back look: Shannon Peterson, Much Most Darling

This Instagram feed proves that new mamas can still be super fashionable (and comfortable) – whilst toting diaper bags and baby bottles. Shannon, a lifestyle blogger, features pics of her chill baby-mama style, which includes perfectly paired scarves, headbands and shawls. We also love when she sneaks a pic of her handsome 13.5 month old little guy into a style shot.

Instagram Handle: @shynnz

The mom whose baby always has adorable headbands: Lynzy Coughlin, Sparkling Foot Steps

During the day, Lynzy works in an ER room (you go, mama). She then moonlights as a blogger and photographer. Her Instagram images are super girly and ethereal, perfect for showing off the cute hair accessories that her 17-month old daughter Olivia rocks on the regular. Bonus: Lynzy’s two rescue kitties make chic cameos on the thread, too.

Instagram Handle: @sparklingfootsteps

The mom with the coolest (and realest) nursery: Shaynah Dodge, Ruffled Snob

This Minnesota-based family and style blogger shows off her “ordinary life” in this Instagram feed devoted mostly to the antics – their funny faces, their energy, their hip-beyond-hip fashion choices – of her three boys. But it’s Shynah’s simple, yet stylish nursery decor (her whole house for that matter) that we can’t get enough of.

Instagram Handle: @ruffledsnob

The mom with awesome nesting style: Mandy Roberson, Momma Society

Mandy, founder of Momma Society (an online community for modern mamas), makes nesting look so chic and fun! From baby moccasins, nursery books, toys, diapers, crib sheets, and clothes -the cutest clothes – this momma-to-be documents how she (and other moms) prep for their newest addition.

Instagram Handle: @mommasociety

The mom who knows exactly how to dress her baby bump: Christina Han Johnston, Proper Hunt

If mommy blogger Christina has ever had a rough day with her pregnancy, she doesn’t show it in her lovely Instagram feed. Instead, we see her glorious baby bump, homemade mama-friendly meals, and cute pics of her first born. If Christina’s photos are this addictive now, just wait until the new addition arrives!

Instagram Handle: @properhunt

The mom with the most fashionable babies: Karla Quiz, Karla and France

Karla is the mother of two little girls, sassy France Fox (3 years old) and sweet Fair James (7 months old). They live in the San Francisco Bay area and take weekly adventures into the city, but never without the cutest outfits (think: bandana bibs, head scarves, and jumpers, oh my!).
