Parakeet Cafe

Michael B. via Yelp

A little birdie told us to fly straight to Parakeet Cafe for delicious coffee and delectable eats, and we're so glad we did! The cheery space features vibrant, neon and hand-painted parakeet print wallpaper that will instantly bring a smile to your face. But that's just the beginning of all there is to chirp about. Parakeet Cafe's coffee drinks, comprised of ethically sourced beans, house-made syrups and alternative milks, pair beautifully with their healthy, creative menu. They believe "indulging in your health should be just that: indulgent. Every item on the menu is full of lush, organic ingredients, bright flavor, interesting textures and beautiful color."

We love the turmeric latte, an enticing blend of turmeric, ginger, vanilla, cardamom, honey and almond milk, paired with their cacao waffle served with coconut yogurt, organic fresh berries, banana, chia, cinnamon and coconut sugar. Additionally, you'll find something for everyone's taste from their extensive menu of savory and sweet breakfast and lunch items ranging from decadently topped toasts and robust salads to comforting soups and hearty breakfast entrees served all day. Their pastry case is straight out of heaven, with plenty of vegan and gluten free options to choose from.

Mostra Coffee

Andy B. via Yelp

The aptly named Mostra Coffee ('mostra' is Italian for show, exhibition, or performance) lives up to its name by offering innovative brewing experiences and flavors that elevate grabbing a cup of joe to an art form. Additionally, Mostra was just named 2020 Roaster of the Year by Roast Magazine.

This elegant yet cozy neighborhood coffee shop features 'English Industiral' inspired design and has the first three-head, Mavam espresso machine in San Diego. The machine was built into a low bar-top so customers can witness the brewing process themselves. Mostra invites the community to warm up in their friendly, relaxing environment to make connections and enjoy great coffee. We love their impressive list of signature drinks including the Campfire Latte: oozing with flavors of mocha, graham cracker crumble and honey and the Bibingka Crème Brûlée Latte: inspired by a Filipino dessert, a Crème Brûlée Latte made with
coconut-infused whole milk, topped with coconut powder as well as their Choconana: house-made banana milk mixed with Brazil Cold Brew.

For a truly unique coffee-going experience, add canoodling with cats to the mix! Cat & Craft is North County's first cat café, and it boasts “Purr-over” coffees from Manzanita Roasting Company alongside “Catprese” toast and Hazel & Jade pastries. You'll get to cuddle adoptable kitties from rescue organization Love Your Feral Felines during your visit. (Married owners Andrew and Caroline Vaught hope to rehome 500 cats in the café’s first year.) Hawthorn Coffee

Hawthorn Coffee

Hawthorn Coffee is as family-minded as a coffee house can get. Owned by a father/son duo, Kevin and Dylan, Dylan's young sons often frequent the shop. The clientele consists of many parents with kids as well as expecting parents. Kevin says, "Part of the reason why is that we believe in welcoming everyone, and that means everyone. Our philosophy is that kids can do no wrong, so we let them have the run of the shop. And since kids generally make noise, we let them do that, too. And that, in turn, makes parents very relaxed." In addition to this fantastic, inclusive atmosphere, Hawthorn Coffee means business when it comes to the perfect cup of joe. They serve Cat & Cloud of Santa Cruz, CA, Dapper&Wise Coffee Roasters of Beaverton, WA and Arcade Coffee Roasters of Riverside, CA, in their shop because of their "commitment to that sweet balance, blend, and consistency of deliciousness." Bottom’s Up! Irresistible Juice & Smoothie Bars

Sure, snow-capped mountain towns are hot tickets during the winter. But, we’re letting you in on a little secret: these picturesque destinations are just as fun during the summer months, too. Once the snow melts, these vacation hot spots pack in the family fun with activities ranging from horseback riding to zip lines to serene hikes that’ll have you finding your zen in no time. Read on for six mountain towns—plus, six itineraries—for your next summer vacation.

Mammoth, California

Mammoth Mountain

PLAY
Mammoth shines in the summer. Try your hand at rock climbing or horseback riding. If being on wheels is more your style, bike the town loop, a paved multi-use path perfect for beginner cyclists—do all or part of the seven-mile loop. For thrill-seekers, grab an adventure pass to access a ropes course, bungee trampoline, climbing wall, junior zip line and much more. Whatever your interest, you’ll find it in Mammoth.

EAT
Mammoth’s Rock ‘N’ Bowl is a great family dining spot. Expect an arcade, bowling, a full kid-friendly menu (think pizza, salads and burgers). If you're staying near the Village, try out Burgers for you guessed it...delicious burgers, Toomey's (try their pancakes!), Mexican fare at Gomez's or hop over to the super kid-friendly Brewery. You'll love how welcoming Mammoth restaurants are to kids—expect high chairs, crayons and kids menus.

STAY
Stay mountainside right near the Village at The Westin Monache Resort, Mammoth. The gondola is steps away and all suite-style rooms include gas fireplaces, kitchens or kitchenettes, and are dog-friendly to boot. Book now to save up to 15% off your summer stay.

Breckenridge, Colorado

Breckenridge Tourism Office / Liam Doran

PLAY
Lace up those sneakers or put on a helmet because Breckenridge is the perfect summer destination to hike or bike with your crew. For little riders, head to the Rec Path, a seven-mile section in the Town of Breckenridge that’s paved and follows the Blue River. For an easy 1.2 mile hike, check out the Iowa Hill Mine Trail loop where you’ll encounter an abandoned mining site with historical artifacts—who said vacations can’t be educational, too? Other summer family events include the WAVE (great time is late May or June before the costs and crowds pick up), Gold Panning Championship (Jun. 14-16), Summer Beer Fest (July 13) and Breckenridge International Festival of the Arts (Aug. 9-18).

Good to know: Ditch the car and take advantage of the Breck Free Ride to get around town.

EAT
Fuel up at the Sunday Farmer’s market on Main Street and then spend the day walking around town. If it’s nice out (which it likely will be—after all, it’s summer!) head to one of the town’s patios for a laid-back meal. Quandary Grille with mountain and pond views or The Motherloaded Tavern. Other dining options include Columbine for hearty pancakes and American favorites for breakfast, Breckenridge Brewery for brews and views of the Tenmile range, and Fatty’s for pizza on the cozy deck. For happy hour head to Breckenridge Distillery and Broken Compass. Broken Compass doesn’t offer food but you’re welcome to bring in your own and set up a picnic. And, if picnicking is your jam, grab lunch at Duggans Deli and head to one of the many parks in town—Carter Park or Riverwalk Lawn are two local favorites.

Residence Inn Breckenridge

STAY

Where to Stay

Lake Chelan, and next door Manson, have a variety of rental properties, campsites, hotels and lodges to set up your relaxation headquarters. Here are a few of our favorite spots:

Wapato Point
Located in Mason, just a short drive from downtown Lake Chelan, Wapato Point sits on 116 acres and 1.5 miles of waterfront. Large sandy beaches coupled with outdoor activities galore (think: biking, swimming, boating, fishing, putt putt golf, tennis, walking trails) and accommodations that range from studios and one bedrooms to two and three bedroom condominiums, make this resort the perfect place for families.

photo: Kristina Moy

The property boasts eight outdoor pools for seasonal use and one indoor Olympic pool facility, complete with a workout area, a hot tub and a shallow wading pool, so your little water bugs can get their aquatic fix on no matter what the weather. Each week, the Point offers a host of family activities that range from free to a couple of bucks. Purchase a weekly family pass for $95 (good for 6 people) and enjoy daily DIY arts and crafts, games, s’mores by the campfire and more from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. If you don’t feel like schlepping your bikes and sports equipment, the Kiosk (open daily starting at 10 a.m.) offers bike, tennis, pickleball, basketball, volleyball and horeseshoe rentals along with a range of non-motorized water craft rentals including kayaks, canoes, paddle boards and pedal boats; jet skis can be rented from Shoreline Rentals, conveniently located on the property.

Where to Play

Slidewaters
Located on the Chelan butte overlooking the lake, Slidewaters is one of the Northwest’s largest (and most popular) water slide parks. And with attractions for every age and stage, we guarantee everyone in your family will find something to enjoy. Kids and parents will love the 500-foot Lazy River, the Bug-a-Boo (a beginner slide for all ages), the Tube Blaster (for single or double tube riders at least 48 inches tall) and the Purple Haze (a dark covered tube for thrill seekers).

Lady of the Lake
If you want to explore all of Lake Chelan, hop aboard the Lady of the Lake for a day trip (or overnight adventure) where you can take in spectacular mountain and lake views and enjoy unplugged serenity. This 55-mile journey brings you to the head of Lake Chelan, known as Stehekin Valley; which is only reachable by boat, seaplane or a 50-mile hike. The Lady of the Lake offers two boats: The Lady of the Lake II (a 4 hour, one way trip) or The Lady Express (a 2 hour one way trip); keep this in mind when booking so you can plan accordingly.

With only 95 full-time residents, Stehekin is praised for its blue-green, glacier fed waters and nearly untouched natural surroundings. One of the biggest draws of this locale is the 312-foot waterfall known as Rainbow Falls. Hop aboard the Rainbow Falls Bus Tour where a heritage style red bus will take you to the falls and narrate historical points along the way. The tour includes a stop at the one-room schoolhouse (a historical landmark) and the Stehekin Pastry Co. where you can indulge in one of their famous cinnamon rolls.

Good to Know: There is a snack bar on board the boat, but you can also bring food with you. Before you board, hit up the Lake Chelan Artisan Bakery and snag a couple of lunch sacks to help ease grumbling tummies on the trip. If you have tots in tow, there’s not a lot to do on the boat, so make sure to pack plenty of activities to keep them occupied; puzzles, coloring books and a laptop with movies are always good for the trip.

Blueberry Hills
A trip to Lake Chelan wouldn’t be complete without visiting Blueberry Hills—a small, family owned and operated U-pick berry farm and restaurant. For a U-pick adventure, head out to the blueberry field and pick berries until they turn your fingertips purple. At $2.50 a pound, you should be able to gather enough blueberries to snack on and even more to bring home; post vacation. In addition to blueberries (available July through mid-August), you can pick strawberries and raspberries June through late fall and blackberries August though October. Psst… If you don’t have the time (or the energy) to hit the fields, Blueberry Hills does sell pre-picked berries by the pound at their fruit stand.

photo: Jenifer Castillo

Once you’ve had your fill of the fields, head inside to the restaurant for a good old-fashioned home cooked meal. Here you will find eclectic decor to feast your eyes and food to feast your belly. Enjoy a hearty breakfast such as the Pepe’ Scramble, Cowboy Breakfast or a smiley face waffle for your mini foodie. Enjoy homemade soups, sandwiches, burger, pies, muffins and even ice cream. The restaurant is extremely popular (especially on weekends), so if you want to avoid a line out the door, head here early. However, if there is a line, rest easy; the line moves fast and there is plenty of seating; including an outdoor covered deck overlooking the blueberry fields. Psst… while you are waiting, let your kids explore the hidden play space under the stairs; it’s packed with toys, books and plenty of fun.

Good to know: Blueberry Hills is known for their Breakfast Blintz (pictured below); a sweet crepe filled with a blend of ricotta and cream cheese and topped with warm blueberry or peach (or both) pie filling and whipped cream. Although it is large enough to share, you likely will want to keep this tasty treat all to yourself.

Where to Eat

Wapato Point Cellars
Lake Chelan prides itself in being home to some of the regions best wineries. In an effort to combine the family atmosphere of the region and to showcase the bountiful local vineyards; many of the wineries have made a conscious effort to be family friendly. One of the best examples of this is Wapato Point Cellars. Settle outside on an Adirondack deck chair that overlooks an acre of luscious green grass complete with a playground for the kiddos. Sip a glass of wine and enjoy appetizers while watching the kids play badminton or take a spin on the merry-go-round. Stick around to have dinner at the Winemaker’s Grill and enjoy the house favorite Chicken Piccata or Steak Skewers with goat cheese and bacon. Plus, everyone in your crew can enjoy evening entertainment, starting nightly at 5 p.m., where local musicians fill the evening air with sounds of music.

— Kristina Moy & Jenifer Castillo

A portion of this trip was paid for by the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce, but all opinions expressed here belong to the writers.

Looking for a weekend getaway filled with beautiful beaches, gondola rides, wild island adventures, cultural museums and botanical gardens? It could only get better if there was also fun stuff for kids, like mini-golf, paddle boats, arcades and carousels. Now add great food and affordable accommodations. And it’s all only an hour away. That’s right; Ventura and the cities of the central coast are the getaway you’ve been dreaming of.

Exploring Nature

Channel Islands
This is the highlight of your Ventura visit: a visit to one of the pristine Channel Islands. Santa Cruz is probably the best island for a first visit, as it’s the largest and offers the most amenities. (Though Anacapa is a beautiful and wild adventure, and you can read more about taking a trip to Anacapa here.)

Hop on an Island Packers boat for a day trip to Santa Cruz Island. It’s an amazing foray into pristine nature for kids of all ages (you’ll see even young babies, with the cutest life vests, on the boat on the way over).  When you get to the island, which is the only one with running water and a visitor center, you can take a hike with the naturalist volunteer who takes the boat ride over with you, and learn all about the history of the island from the Chumash settlers to the ranchers who raised cattle here to the island’s new life as a National Park and marine sanctuary (that has the cutest dwarf foxes your family will ever see).

The hour ride is a wonderful seafaring adventure, which doubles as a wildlife spotting trip. We recommend taking the boat that docks at Scorpion Ranch, which has lots of beautiful hikes, the visitor center and snorkeling spots. It also has the extra adventure of docking at sea, so you take inflatable motor boats to your shore landing, which makes it extra fun (you get wet!) for kids. If your family is adventurous or has been to the islands before, consider booking a kayak tour while you’re on the island (try the tours at Aquasports). Pack lunch, snacks and water as nothing is available on the island, or make your trip blissfully easy and order a gourmet meal from Channel Island Provisioners (read more about them in the food section!).

Ventura Botanical Gardens
While not as old or vast as some other SoCal Botanical Gardens, the new Ventura Botanical Gardens offers up a few things for families that no other garden in town can: sweeping ocean vistas and a chance to play Mary Contrary and see how the garden grows. The garden winds up in the hills above the city and is in its infant stages, which means every time you visit you can see what’s newly planted and growing. With an easy hiking path that leads to spectacular ocean views, native plants and Chumash stone walls, it’s a wonderful way for kids to stretch, play and learn. Admission is free, and free (informative and fascinating) walking tours are available. Check the website for tour and event information.

Oxnard Beach Park
This is a fabulous park that has absolutely everything you could want: vast green spaces for running, a small playground for littles and a bigger one for more adventurous big kids (pirate themed, of course), dog friendly, extends all the way to the beach and has bike and scooter paths along the beach. Oh, there’s also loads of space for picnicking and grilling. You may have to peel the kids away from here to get to other activities, so it’s a great place to spend the day, or just let them run around and go crazy after a long car ride.
Find it: 4800 Beach Way, Oxnard

Family Fun

Ventura Harbor Village
First stop for family fun in Ventura has to be Ventura Harbor Village. This is where Channel Islands tours and adventures leave from, but leave extra time to explore the harbor and village. While the shops range from unique (get some local art at The Mermaid Gallery and The Ventura County Potters’ Guild) to useful (hats for all come in super handy at Hats Unlimited and extra suits, sun screen and more are available at Ventura Swimwear), the draw here for kids is the activities. You can ride the vintage carousel and play video games at the retro arcade for a trip back in time. To really explore the harbor, rent any kind of boat (paddle, sail, electric or kayak) at Ventura Boat Rentals.

Gondola Paradiso
If a gondola ride through pristine canals in a hand carved wooden gondola sounds like a romantic date night, it is. But it’s also an immensely relaxing and entertaining family outing.  Kids adore the 50-minute cruise through Oxnard’s hidden (ok, not like you can hide a canal, but did you know Oxnard had such a beautiful, tucked away waterway?) spot, where they can glide and spot fish, birds and paddle boarders and you can bring a bottle of wine and relax after a day of sightseeing. Snuggling blankets line the beautiful boat, and a sunset cruise may just be your favorite part of your trip.

Golf N’ Stuff
When you drive up the coast, you have probably noticed the giant castle looming over the freeway. It’s a massive mini golf course (if that’s not an oxymoron!) and that’s not all. There are go-karts and bumper boats, laser tag and an arcade. If you need a break from nature and museums and boating, this is sure to delight every kiddo in the family.

Museums

San Buenaventura Mission
This is the first stop on the historical tour (the one we’re making up!) of Ventura and the central coast. It’s a beautiful example of an early California Mission, and you can bring kids in 7 days a week for self guided tours. Founded in 1782, the mission still holds masses and confessions, and gives kids a glimpse of the early days of settlers life in the area. Enter through the gift shop, where you buy tickets to take a tour of the museum and grounds.

U.S. Navy Seabee Museum
Lovers of history, science & technology and playing with little green army men and tanks will all love this Naval military history museum in Port Hueneme. Pacifist parents dig it too, as it really explains and emphasizes the infrastructure building and engineering that the Navy participates in around the world in times of war and peace. The Seabees (standing for CB, or Construction Brigade) were born in the days after Pearl Harbor when the Navy needed builders who were trained to be in war zones and fight, too. This museum has history, past and present, alongside loads of cool artifacts and STEM room for kids that will let them build and construct to their heart’s content. To get the most out of the museum, you can contact them in advance of your visit and arrange a guided tour.

Murphy Auto Museum
This tucked away little museum in Oxnard is a must for kids (and parents) who love cool vintage cars or miniature trains, because smack in the middle of over 90 beautiful old cars are over 1800 feet of railroad tracks and tiny surrounding villages maintained by the Gold Coast Modular Rail Road Club. The museum is open on weekends year round, and also on Wednesday and Friday from April-December. But try to visit on the weekend; that’s when the railroad club turns on the trains!

Where to Eat

Andria’s Seafood Restaurant and Market
When in Rome, eat pasta. When on the California coast, eat fish! You’ll smell the fish and chips as soon as you hit the harbor village, and then it will be all you can think about. The generous portions of lightly fried halibut do not disappoint and neither do the sourdough bowls filled with clam chowder. Even kids who don’t like fish tear into both, but if they resist, there are also inexpensive kids meal options that include mini corn dogs and chicken tenders alongside the fries and a lemonade (or other drink). Watch the boats as you eat, and you’re ready to take your own seafaring adventure, fully fueled. They’ll also give you a token for 50 cents off an ice cream over at Coastal Cone.
Online: andriasseafood.com

Coastal Cone
Because of course you need an ice cream by the sea! Between your fish and chips and your cone, you might want to take a long walk and even longer paddle around the harbor, because once you smell the fresh & house baked waffle cone (they also dip ‘em in chocolate and roll them in sprinkles), you’ve got to get one. This ice cream comes in 40 flavors and it’s one of the only places outside Disneyland that you can also get an official Dole Whip.
Online: coastalcone.com

Channel Island Provisioners
Yes, you can stop at the grocery store and stock up on a whole host of snacks to munch on as you picnic your way through the beach or on your trip to the Channel Islands. But why you’d do that when you can call Channel Island Provisioners and have them pack you a gourmet lunch or breakfast (or both!) to go, we can’t understand. A sailor himself, founder Chef Neil knows how to cook gourmet and pack small. Everything is delicious, but for kids we especially recommend the breakfast buns, which are easy to pack, unbelievably delicious and will get you ready for your whole day of hiking, camping or island exploring. For grownups the tasty seafood catch of the day sandwich is out of this world good. Place your order, they’ll deliver it dockside in the morning, and you’ve got unbelievable food (including a ginger and salty snacks trail mix that settles seasick tummies) for the day with no work. Now that’s a vacation!

Pete’s Breakfast House
Did you take advantage of being on vacation to sleep in, but still want a hearty breakfast? Pete’s is your place. Old school delicious breakfast food is served ‘til they close at 2 p.m., and while your kids will adore the happy face pancakes or the pancake roll up, we have to recommend that whatever you order, you get an extra side of the fresh biscuits and home made strawberry jam (strawberries are the #1 crop of Ventura County, so it makes sense the best and freshest jam is made here).
Online: petesbreakfasthouse.com

Ottavio’s Italian Restaurant
After your gondola ride, you may want to continue the feel of an Italian holiday, in which case you should make your next stop Ottavio’s in Camarillo. From a Michelangelo bust to a decorated ceiling, it’s definitely a Disney version of Italy; in other words, kid heaven. Pastas, pizzas, salads and meatballs dominate a decidedly old school menu, which is exactly what you remember (and loved) as a kid yourself. While kids will be tempted by everything on offer, point them to the kids menu, which is a fabulous deal every day, free with adult diners on Monday & Tuesday and comes with a Roy Rogers or Shirley Temple for every grown-up in training. We told you it was old school, in the best possible way! It’s also a hop, skip & jump from the Camarillo outlets if you’re doing a little shopping.
Online: ottavio.com

Topa Topa Brewing
If after exploring, hiking, shopping and soaking up some culture you’re beat, this is just the spot. Topa Topa offers 16 rotating hand-crafted beers on tap, and is a wonderful spot to relax inside or on the patio, is very welcoming to kids as well as dogs, and will let you order pizza from the fabulous Tony’s Pizzaria down the street for the kids to munch on while you work your way through a sampler. If you’re an oatmeal stout drinker, don’t miss this version!
Online: topatopa.beer

Spencer Mckenzies Tacos
Nothing says California like a fish taco, and sometimes after a day smelling the salt air, that’s all you crave. Luckily for Ventura visitors, some of the best in the state are at Spencer Mckenzies. They also make one of the best shrimp and fish burritos (nope, seriously, it’s been quantified) and best hot sauce (that one’s just an opinion, but an educated one). Kids who won’t touch critters from the sea are happy with chicken tenders or chicken and carne asada tacos, and parents and happy with everything, washed down with an ice cold beer.

Where to Stay

Embassy Suites by Hilton Mandalay Beach Resort
There’s really too much to do in Ventura for a day trip, especially if you’re taking an island hop, when you need to be dockside in the early am. Our favorite place to stay locally with kids is this Embassy Suites in Oxnard, which is right on the beach, has a pool setup that kids compare to Peter Pan’s Neverland, great breakfast buffet and is minutes from the harbor in Ventura. All that, plus suites where you can tuck the kids into one bedroom while you toast the sunset from your balcony in the other and reasonable rates too.
Online: embassysuites3.hilton.com/en/hotels/california/embassy-suites-by-hilton-mandalay-beach-resort-OXNCAES

Crowne Plaza Ventura Beach
Another Oceanside spot, this one is right on the boardwalk, overlooking Ventura Beach and Ventura Pier with amazing beach views.  You know that round, tall building you can spot off the 101? This is it. Right off the freeway, this is an amazingly affordable and convenient option that is super central to all your Central Coast explorations.

Residence Inn Marriott Oxnard at River Ridge
This is our pick for a longer getaway with the kids since it has fantastic suites that are like little apartments and even offers grocery shopping, tennis courts with a coach, footgolf, football fields (attention pigskin fans: this is the Rams and Cowboys official practice venue during spring/summer).
Online: marriott.com/hotels/travel/oxrri-residence-inn-oxnard-river-ridge

Four Points Sheraton in Ventura
If you’re staying overnight to catch an early boat, this pick is perfect. You can literally roll out of bed and walk to Ventura Harbor Village. So not only can you be on time for boat launches, harborside means you can walk to dinner, the carousel, arcades, shopping and have lovely harbor views.

If you need more help, the Ventura County Coast website has loads of information for planning anything from a daytrip to a week getaway. Have you ventured to Ventura County? What are your favorite family spots?

—written and images by Meghan Rose

Warning: If you live with a small, train-obsessed person you may want to obscure the view of the screen you’re looking at, because for a certain crowd, this story contains some explosive imagery. That’s right, the wait is over: Thomas Land is here! We made the trek to the faux Sodor in eastern Massachusetts, and have the scoop on the new theme park. Read on for our review, other attractions nearby and where to eat and stay on your train-tastic pilgrimage.

photo: Thomas Land

The Depot Deets
Located about a four-hour drive from NYC in Carver, Massachusetts, Thomas Land opened in August and is the only Thomas-themed park in the United States. It’s actually an amusement park inside another amusement park, occupying 11.5 acres inside the existing kid-friendly park Edaville — which just means double the rides and fun.

Visitors are transported to the island of Sodor the minute they walk through the entrance; the Thomas theme song (“They’re two, they’re four, they’re six, they’re eight…”) plays from loudspeakers, and a life-sized fountain of Sir Topham Hatt greets the crowds.

Beyond the main gates, the park is a replica of Thomas’ home base, the Island of Sodor, with familiar destinations like Tidmouth Sheds, Knapford Station, and Brendam Docks where your little engineers can play and pose for photos.  But you’re really going to want to have the camera at the ready for the moment when your little engineer sees the real, full-size Thomas chug down the tracks blowing his whistle. As the saying goes: priceless. (Thomas circles the park on a track, and of course, visitors can hop on for a ride.)

The park is currently home to 10 different rides featuring Thomas’ friends, with a few more to open soon. Additionally, Sir Topham Hatt holds meet and greets throughout the day and there are also shows at Tidmouth Shed, so be sure to check the daily schedule when you first enter Thomas Land. Outside of Thomas Land, in the Edaville section of the park, you can find about twenty additional carnival rides, like the tilt-a-whirl, carousel and bumper cars.

photo: Thomas Land

The Rides
This park knows its audience, and even your tiniest thrill seekers can take a spin on just about every ride, as long as they are accompanied by an adult. But this isn’t to say that these rides don’t pack a punch; you can swing back and forth and whirl in circles on the Rockin’ Bulstrode or bump and spin high above the park on Toby’s Tilting Tracks, to name a few.

More hesitant riders or first timers can take a ride on the Diesel Derby or fly a helicopter on Herold’s Liftoff. Their park even features a few rides just to keep  the “older” kids excited too, such as the Runaway Coaster and Cranky’s Crane Drop. (The height requirement is taller on these rides, so the littlest riders won’t be able to hop on with or without an adult.)

photo: Caitlin Dowling

Full Steam Ahead
As if an entire park filled with Thomas and his friends wasn’t enough, your little conductors can then hop on board a narrow-gauge train helmed by a life-sized Thomas the Tank Engine and take a 20 minute scenic ride around the park. Trains typically leave on the hour, but check for the daily schedule at the boarding area. If you happen to visit Thomas Land between Nov. 20th and Dec. 20th, consider going for an evening ride; every Saturday during the holiday season, Edaville decorates Thomas’ path with thousands of lights for an even more magical ride. (FYI, the train is the only place in the park where strollers are not permitted; they can be parked in the boarding area.)

photo: Thomas Land

A Very Thomas Holiday
And as we mentioned earlier, Edaville is known for its holiday celebrations, so if you want to make this a twofer, you can cross Santa and Thomas off your to do list all in one visit. Edaville is transformed into a winter wonderland during the holiday season, complete with Santa’s Village, Polar Express train rides and the newly constructed Dickens Village.

If you get there before the winter season, Santa may not have set up shop yet, but Dinoland is still up and running until the colder months when the giants go into hibernation. (Yep, you heard us right: this park has it all, including 23 life-size animatronics dinosaurs.)

photo: Dinoland

Dining Caboose
There are plenty of places to grab a quick tasty bite inside the park, from pizza to sandwiches to BBQ. There’s also a sweet shop if you want to give your little ones an extra treat that day. Feel like more of a sit down meal outside of the park but want to stay in town? Swing by Mama Mia’s, a family friendly italian restaurant or Little Red Smokehouse, for some southern BBQ. If the weather is nice, head over to Cabby Shack in Plymouth for waterfront views, live music and delicious seafood. Or, top off the weekend by enjoying a hearty breakfast before hitting the road at Roo Bar in Plymouth. (We suggest the peanut butter and jelly waffles.)

At a Station Near You
If you feel like extending your stay and checking out the area, there’s plenty more to see and do. Thomas Land is less than a half hour drive to the bridge that takes you over the bay to one of Massachusetts’ best vacation spots, Cape Cod. In the warmer months, hop on a whale watch or soak up the sun at the beach. When the weather is cooler, the seafood is still delicious, so grab a bite, hit one of the cute town centers for some shopping and take a walk on the beach.

Plimoth Plantation, a living history museum and home to Plymouth Rock is about 30 minutes away. Go back in time take visiting with pilgrims and climbing aboard a replica of the Mayflower II.

photo: John Carver Inn & Spa

Where to Stay
There are plenty of options for lodging in the area, and many offer package deals for Edaville. If you’re looking for biggest convenience, The Marriott Townhouse Suites is the closest hotel, about 7 miles away, and has an indoor pool and complimentary continental breakfast. If you’re a family of history buffs, consider the John Carver Inn & Spa, located on the site of the original Pilgrim settlement. The hotel boasts an indoor pilgrim theme pool with a 80-foot water slide and waterfalls, and is within walking distance to shops and restaurants. And while this isn’t an option in the colder seasons, if you’re planning your trip for a warmer month, consider adding a little adventure and setting up camp at Pinewood Lodge or Myles Standish State Forest. You can check out the full list of hotels offering Edaville packages here.

Have you visited Thomas Land? Tell us about your visit in the comments below!

Now that school is back in session big breakfasts on a weekday aren’t exactly practical – it’s all you can do to get them up and dressed, slurping a gogurt or smoothie in the car. But that doesn’t mean pancakes are now strictly for Sundays. Just wait till the sun sets and break up your routine with a little breakfast – for dinner. Here are a few stellar spots that are serving up breakfast all day long.

Restaurant goers like the at home vibe of Pann’s. Where do you go to get the most important meal of the day, at the end of the day?

When it comes to planning a family vaca, there’s a reason so many Seattleites head east to Lake Chelan. With 300 days of sunshine, no matter what the season you can nearly always count on fun under the bright North Central Washington sun. And with recreational activities galore, clear mountain air and stunning scenery, and an easy livin’ pace, it’s no wonder families have been making Lake Chelan their vacation tradition for generations. Whether you prefer a tent-cation or a condo-cation, we’ve put together a list of our fave Chelan hot spots. So read on, and get ready to plan your next family vaca east of the Cascades.

Blueberry Hills
This small, family owned and operated U-pick berry farm and country restaurant (specializing in down-home, country cookin’) should be at the top of your to-do list! For just $2.50 a pound, you and Littles can head out into the fields and pick until your heart’s content. In addition to blueberries (which are available July through mid-August), you can pick strawberries and raspberries June through late fall and blackberries August through October. If don’t have the time (or the energy) to hit the fields, Blueberry Hills does sell its blueberries (pre-picked) by the pound at their fruit stand.

Depending on the time of day (and your appetite), you’ll want to head inside the barn (aka restaurant) for some homemade grub made just the way grandma use to make it. On the menu: hearty breakfast dishes with names like Pepé Scramble, Joe’s Breakfast, and Cowboy Breakfast as well as smiley face waffles for the kiddos, a variety of lunch items including homemade soups, sandwiches, and burgers, and yummy pies, muffins, and ice cream. If the line is out of the door when you arrive, don’t worry. It moves fast and there’s plenty of seating inside (including an outdoor covered deck which overlooks the blueberry fields). Once you place your order, feel free to walk around the restaurant and look at the variety of collectibles hanging from the ceiling, covering the wall, and peering underneath the glass tables. If the kiddos need something fun to do while you’re gawking at the décor, there’s a play space (with toys) under the stairs. Insider tip: Blueberry Hills is known for their breakfast Blintz, a sweet crepe filled with a blend of ricotta and cream cheeses topped with your choice of warm blueberry or peach (or both) pie filling and whipped cream. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, be sure to order one or get one (or two) to go.
