Your 16-bit childhood memories are making a comeback. Sega Genesis is releasing a mini version of the console originally released in 1988!

With Nintendo re-releasing games and accessories from the ’80s and ’90s, it was only a matter of time before competitors like Sega got in on the throwback era, as well. Sega has just released the Sega Genesis Mini along with some classic games from your youth. The console and games feature the same 16-bit graphics and sounds from the original version just 55 percent smaller. The console, which comes with two controllers, can plug directly into a TV for play.

The Sega Genesis Mini comes pre-loaded with 42 classic game titles including favorites like Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition, Sonic the Hedgehog, World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck and Castlevania: Bloodlines.

The entire system, including the games and controllers, is priced at $79.99 and is already available for purchase at retailers like GameStop, who expects this to be a hot ticket holiday gift. “Our pre-orders [of the Genesis Mini] are doing very well and we expect to move a lot of inventory as we head into the holiday season,” GameStop told CNN in a statement.

Walmart Is Selling Your Favorite Vintage Arcade Games for a Steal

Want to know what the hottest toys trends are this year?  We hightailed it to New York for the 116th Annual Toy Fair in order to get the scoop on the latest and greatest on toys and playtime. From bubble innovation to the best family games, here’s what play looks like in 2019.

The Biggest Trends in Toys

Magnetic Play
While the past decade has introduced us to massive boxes of magentic tiles (how did we live without them?), 2019 builds upon the fundamental shapes by adding animal faces, battery power and wheels, in the form of kits that bring your creation to life. For the preschool-set, we love the new Magformers Animal Jumble ($59.99). Older kids will love the GeoSmart Collection, including the Moon Lander ($52.99).

Nostalgia
1980s and 1990s toy pop culture was evident throughout Toy Fair, from vintage board games, to old school favorites like Lite Brite, Weebles, and Lava lamps. Two new toys that tipped their hat to the 1990s but offered a decidedly  modern twist are the Blockbuster Board Game from Big Potato Games (“The golden age of video rentals is back! Introducing a super-simple party game for anyone who has ever seen a movie”), which will be exclusively at Target in March 2019, and a collection of Spongebob Squarepants toys, including a Giggle Blaster,a weapon that sprays aerosol party string (included) and shouts over 15 SpongeBob phrases and sounds. The Giggle Blaster arrives in the Fall 2019 and retails for $19.99 (PS – Want to feel old? 2019 is Spongebob’s 20th Anniversary!)

Science Experiments
SpongeBob isn’t the only one celebrating an anniversary. The United Nations has declared 2019 the “International Year of the Periodic Table of the Chemical Elements,” and in celebration, Ooze Labs has released a chemistry set that will allow your budding chemist to safely explore 20 different experiments. For younger kids, Learning Resources introduced Beaker Creatures in Fall 2018, offering a science lab with a collectable component. 2019 brings a new Alien Experiment Lab and collectible alien creatures, including Swampoids, and Dogstars.

Real Life Heroes
While superhero toys will never go away, we were happy to see a renewed focus on “real life hero” toys including firemen, policemen and ambulance workers. Both LEGO and Mattel have introduced new action figures and play sets.

Mattel has relaunched Rescue Heroes, a line of collectibles that was popular in late 90s. The goal with the re-launch is to focus on preschoolers to stimulate children’s imagination and sense of adventure without involving violence. The product line will be available exclusively at Walmart stores beginning Summer 2019. It also coincides with a newly launched YouTube series.

LEGO is also focused on celebrating first responders with a  a new police play set in their City series, as well as a fire fighter play set available in a Duplo kit, which is aimed at preschoolers.

Play Sets for Small Spaces

We’re happy to see a slew of play activities for smaller spaces, and Fisher Price welcomed several innovative products perfect for apartments and travel, including an interactive kitchen that is portable and can be folded for storage, and a line of plush pretend sets, including a campfire. Sago expanded on it’s mini role playing sets with new professions including a veterinarian.

Movie Franchises

Though the long-awaited Toy Story 4 movie hasn’t hit theaters yet (May 2019) it hasn’t stopped the behind-the-scenes collaboration with some of our favorite toy makers.  The new LEGO movie is now headed to streaming channels, though kids will be thrilled with keeping the characters alive through a variety of action figures and play sets.

Some of our favorites from Toy Fair include, the LEGO Duplo play set (the first time a movie franchise has extended to Duplo, and the Barbie collaboration with Bo Peep as a super hero.

Nerf Alternatives
Did you know ax-throwing is now a thing? The folks at Zing, makers of cool outdoor kids gear), definitely know it, and have kid-proofed the sport so your little warriors can have fun without doing too much damage. Introducing the Zax, a soft-suction ax for throwing. Zing also has a new line of Hyperstrike bow & arrow products, launching exclusively at Target in May 2019 (other retailers in the Fall).  Designed with bungee cords, these bows can launch arrows up to 250 feet and are good for independent or team play (ages 14+). While Marshmallow shooters have been around for a few years, the The Marshmallow Fun Company is releasing The Jumbow, a large bow that will fire arrows with marshmallow heads (which totally alleviates the marshmallow stuck in barrel problem).

Hedgehogs & Sloths, Oh My!

Unicorns and Llama are so 2017. 2019 is all about Hedgehogs and Sloths, according to Toy Fair insiders. A few that stood out, Spike, the Fine Motor Hedgehog, which was a finalist for Toy of the Year 2019, helps todders 18 months + develop fine motor skills. Tumbling Hedgehog, a STEM experiment kit that allows kids to build their own robotic pet hedgehog will be released in July 2019, and the Fisher Price Smooth Moves Sloth, part of the new Linkimals line,  focuses on baby’s (9 months +)  gross motor development through music and motion by clapping its hands together, bobbing its head and activating music to encourage baby to move and groove along.

Red Tricycle Stand-Outs

Little People, Big Dreams Book Series
With stylish and quirky illustrations and extra facts at the back, this empowering series celebrates the important life stories of wonderful people  of the world, from designers and artists to scientists, all of them went on to achieve incredible things, yet all of them began life as a little child with a dream. The girls books launched in 2018 to much fanfare.

The first boys books in the popular series featuring Stephen Hawking and Mohammed Ali, were published in February 2019, Bruce Lee and David Bowie are coming later in 2019.

Fisher Price Wonder Makers Design System
Move over Thomas, Fisher Price is unveiling a whole new world of imaginative play and building this Fall. Built in response to consumer demand, the Wonder Maker Design System is gender neutral, a mix of textiles (felt, wood and plastic) and battery free. The Around Town starter kits retail for $39.99 and will be available for Christmas.

Bonus: The label informs consumers that the outer box can be recycled via curbside programs in most communities across the U.S. and the inside plastic bag can be recycled through store drop-off programs that accept plastic film.

Baby’s First Party: 12 Girly Theme Ideas to Inspire You

If you’ve got a prickly pet at home, you’re going to want to cool it with the pet PDA. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a warning about hedgehogs that surprisingly has nothing to do with those sharp quills.

After a multi-state salmonella outbreak, the CDC is putting out an APB against kissing hedgehogs. Ten out of 11 patients infected during the recent outbreak reported having contact with a hedgehog. Although these prickly pets are popular, they still pose a health risk and should be handled with care.

photo: amayaeguizabal via Pixabay

Hedgehogs can carry salmonella bacteria without appearing sick themselves—and easily spread it around. The CDC says it’s important to always wash your hands after handling your hedgehog and to always keep them out of the kitchen. Avoid bathing your hedgehog in the kitchen sink and bringing them into your bed. Keep their toys and cage clean.

If all else fails, get a dog instead ;)

The Mad Hatter from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

Gracing the pages of Lewis Carroll’s original 1865 tale, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, this kooky tea partier has been adapted for stage and screen including the animated Disney classic, Alice in Wonderland, voiced by Ed Wynn (who also played Uncle Albert in Mary Poppins, among many other roles and voiceovers). You can find literally hundreds of adaptations of this book. We love the classic, along with the Little Golden book based on the Disney version.

An original series that is fun, engaging and provides nuggets of teachable moments to your kids is any parent’s dream. Throw in the fact that you’ll feel totally comfortable leaving them watching an episode while you shower or finish up a conference call is the cherry on top. Read on to discover why we’re enamored with the Amazon Original award-winning Tumble Leaf series and how the show will win over you and your kids the moment you hit play.

The Plot: What to Expect
The original series follows a blue fox named Fig and his sidekick caterpillar buddy named Stick on their adventures as they explore the world around them. Joining the duo on their discoveries is a cast of endearing characters like Maple, a pink fox and Hedge…you guessed it, a hedgehog. Each episode begins with Fig scurrying down to the Finding Place, a special room in the hull of his home on the island of Tumble Leaf, to uncover the episode’s featured object. The objects range from shiny coins to flashlights to a sponge and a straw. Using the object Fig finds, he and his buddies embark on an adventure where they use the object to relate to the world around them. Your kids will follow along as they create shadows with a flashlight or discover how reflections work.

Why You’ll ALL Get Hooked
The animation is cute, colorful and enchanting. The entire series is done in stop motion (think: Chicken Run or the original Wallace and Gromit), which makes the visuals of each scene really captivating. Coupled with the vibrant animation are each episode’s teaching moments. Fig and his friends use objects to understand the world around them, but each exploration is relatable to kids as young as three-years-old. In short, the narratives won’t hit you over the head with science in a boring or irrelevant way. At 11 minutes long, each episode will make your kids look at their environment in a new light and encourage their curiosity.

It’s Not Just Us
We’re not the only ones digging Tumble Leaf. The series is a winner of five Daytime Emmy’s and the winner of the 2015 Parent’s Choice Gold Award.

What’s Next
Season two of the award-winning show debuts on Amazon December 11, 2015! Click here to watch the debut episodes as Fig and his friends embark on even more fantastic adventures. Not caught up yet? Check out the series’ first season here.

You’re late, you’re late, to a very important date. We’re talking about your invitation to an utterly mad tea party in celebration of Coco’s third birthday. Since Coco loves to dress up like Alice from Alice in Wonderland, Coco’s mom thought it would be fun to plan a party around her daughter’s favorite storybook character. Well Alice, eat your heart out, because Coco’s Mad Hatter birthday party really takes the cake (with tea, of course). Luckily for Coco, she’s not the only one in her family obsessed with Alice and her whimsical adventure down the rabbit hole–her grandmother and her godfather are big Alice fans and were hugely instrumental in making this fantastic party come together. We have to tip our 10/6 size hat to superstar photographer Kay Bradford who captured all these magical moments of Coco’s Alice party. Take a look at some of the great shots and read on to get the deets on how this celebration came together.

Coco’s third birthday party was hosted at her godfather’s backyard. In order to make guests feel like they were about to step into a magical English garden, the entrance to the party was quizically marked with signs pointing “This Way” and “That Way” purchased on Etsy. The Alice and White Rabbit garden statues came right from Coco’s grandmother, who collects Alice memorabilia.

Ok, we’re truly envious of this spread that makes all of our stuffed animal tea parties we threw as kids look totally amateur. Coco’s talented godfather, John, is an artist who was largely responsible for many of the decorations at the party, including the hand-woven Mad Hatter’s hat suspended above the table (made from actual tree branches!) Check out his Etsy shop to see more of his amazing work.

The mix-matched chairs were an especially nice touch for the tea party, many of which came from thrift shops and the goodwill.
That’s the birthday girl all dolled up in her Alice costume. To really give the feel that guests had stepped into the home of the White Rabbit himself, Coco’s mom had photographer Kay add an “oil painting” filter over a picture of Coco in her dress. All of the hearth decorations were courtesy of Coco’s Alice-obsessed grandmother. Coco’s mom claims she literally went shopping at her mother’s house to find all of the little knick knacks for the party.

The tables were literally covered with Alice-themed teacups, playing cards, and teapots, many of which came from various thrift shops.

Even the room for the parents was fully decked out, complete with oversized playing cards hanging overhead and a colorful set of tea cups and plates.
The Mad Hatter hat station was great for letting guests dress up as their favorite characters from the story and snag a photo or two as a reminder of all the fun they had at Coco’s party.

The Queen of Hearts! By the looks on Coco’s face, she was more than excited to see her the Queen take time out of her hedgehog croquet game to come wish Coco a Happy Birthday.

No self-respecting tea party is complete without a few party games. Coco’s godfather hand-painted the pin-the-smile-on-the-Cheshire-Cat game on brown butcher paper and sewed a few stuffed hedgehog toys into a ball so Coco’s guests could play Hot Hedgehog. The winner even got to take their own hedgehog home with them. After the games, everyone joined in on an impromptu dance party to the Alice in Wonderland soundtrack. To top off the festivities, everyone got to take a swing at the piñata…

…shaped like the Cheshire Cat of course! The piñata was courtesy of Dale Piñatas. This little guy sat perched in the tree for the party, overseeing all the guests before it was his turn to come down and join in on the fun.

With decorations in just about every corner of the garden, no detail of the party was left unnoticed, even the flower beds were decorated with colorful pinwheels and decorated mushrooms.

We can’t even begin to imagine how Coco’s next birthday party will turn out–this one is pretty hard to top. Coco’s mother says she’s incredibly grateful for all the help she received from her talented friends and family in making this fantastical party a reality. We’re exhausted just looking at the photos.

What is your favorite part of Coco’s whimsical birthday party? Share it with us in a comment below.

A very special thanks to Holly, Coco’s mom for all of her help in bringing this piece together.
