The LEGO House opened its doors on September 28, and if you aren’t already in the loop, allow us to introduce you! Located in Billund, Denmark (aka the global headquarters of LEGO), we’ve got the scoop on this amazing new and oh-so-chic immersive LEGO experience that should officially go on your bucket list now. Read on for photos of what it looks like, and why you should make the trek!

A collab between LEGO and Danish architect Bjarke Ingels, the entire building is an interactive place where you can build and play all day. There is a LEGO museum, a hands-on play area, a LEGO store and a display area for fans to show off their own creations. The House itself looks like 21 giant white bricks, stacked on each other as if it were being built of bricks. Here’s what’s inside!

Upon entering the LEGO House a sea of LEGO bricks greets the kids and there are color-themed zones, each with a different theme. For example, the Red Zone is all about creativity and motion. Kids can don a lab coat and enter the lab where a teacher will help you build the LEGO creation of your dreams.

The Yellow Zone is set up for kids to play with emotions, with fun projects aimed at teaching kids to express, understand and regulate emotions. Create sea creatures, critters and their environments, and “plant” a LEGO flower garden.

The Blue Zone focuses on logic, showing kids how to solve complex problems, find solutions and learn new things through Robo Lab, City Architect, and gravity-defying vehicles in Test Driver. The Green Zone teaches kids to become great communicators and work on social skill building and awareness through LEGO fun like Character Creator, World Explorer and the Story Lab!

The Masterpiece Gallery showcases the creativity of the LEGO community. Build your masterpiece, whether it’s a famous person or place or outstanding work of brick, this gallery of human invention will be jaw-dropping (and your piece might be showcased too!)

There’s even a jaw-dropping LEGO tree, dubbed the Tree of Creativity. At nearly 50 ft. tall, it’s one of the largest LEGO structures ever built.  It took 6,316,611 standard LEGO bricks and 24,350 hours to assemble, and it’s packed with fun details and surprises.

In addition to the experience areas, the roof has a free interactive play area and there are three on-site restaurants. Check out the footage above of the Family Restaurant’s LEGO robots!!! Currently, the ticketed areas are listed with admission of about $32 USD per person. To learn more about the LEGO House and pre-book tickets, visit the website and watch our site for more info as it becomes available!

If you’re like us, sometimes sharing a bed can be uncomfortable. One person wants to snuggle under a pile of blankets, while the other is trying to adjust the sheet to give juuuuust enough coverage, while poking limbs out to breathe. Now, Smartduvet, the makers of the “self-making bed” cover, are introducing a solution.

The Smartduvet Breeze allows users to individually set the temperature on either side of the bed using a smartphone app. Like the original Smartduvet, it uses a small, automatic device to fill up an inflatable sheet that sits between the duvet and the duvet cover, lifting the duvet smoothly back to the “made” position.  In the new model, a smaller network of air channels delivers air that circulates between you and the duvet to cool you via evaporation, or heated air to warm you, depending on the setting.

The company suggests Breeze could also lower energy household consumption, because instead of cooling or heating the entire home for a good night’s sleep, users could cool their bodies directly.

The Smartduvet Breeze is available in various bed sizes on IndieGoGo.

Kids Snack Station Ideas

This post was written by one of our favorite moms, Seng Nickerson, and is shared from her blog here

“Mom, I’m hungry!!!”

That’s what I hear constantly over the summer. I don’t know what it is about the summertime heat, but my kids’ heads are always stuck inside the pantry door looking for snacks!  Did I tell you I had to actually child proof the pantry door to keep them at bay? Even my 7 year old can’t open it – seriously, the child proof door knob is the best invention ever. It’s not that I don’t want them snacking, but I want to make sure they are snacking in a healthy and nutritious way.

I’ve decided that it’s best to have an easy snack station so they can grab their own parent-approved snacks whenever they are hungry. My kids can easily grab out pre-portioned snacks perfectly sized for them without having to nag me to grab a treat out of the pantry. Sometimes, I forget how often they ask for snacks so having a kid snack station helps regulate how much they are consuming! The goal is to prep the snacks once in the morning and you are ready for the day!

Having a snack station also helps during impromptu get together with other littles. All I do is roll out the snack cart, and their friends can join in on the fun. Jif® recently reached out to me to try out their delicious Jif® Power Ups™ to add to our new snack station that is something outside of the old-bag-of-chips realm! They are snack bars and clusters that come in a variety of different flavors, great for a pick-me-up during the day when you or the kids are low on fun! Peanuts are the #1 ingredient that provides a wholesome, well-balanced snack that keeps the kids energized all day for summer time thrills.

How I Setup Our Family Snack Station

1) I set up two snack stations. The first one is in the childproof pantry and the second one is our daily kid-serviced pantry. The pantry one makes it easy when I have to grab a few snacks for their summer camp lunches. The second one is stocked up daily so they get the snacks that I’ve approved for that day.

2) Rolling carts are the absolute best for snack stations! I can easily wheel them from the pantry to wherever the snack station is for that day! This is the one I have [HERE].

3) I stock up on the essential snacks during my bi-weekly trip to the grocery store so I make sure I always have some on hand. Being stocked up also helps when we decide to do a spontaneous zoo or swim park visit as we head out the door.

4) Keep a variety of snacks! Kids love options, so have plenty of them. I also store a quasi-snack station in our refrigerator for cool snacks as well.

So far, this DIY grab and go summertime snack station has been a hit with our kids. Also just as appealing as a delicious snack is the independence of being able to decide when they are ready to eat and what they get to eat! Who doesn’t love that?

Convince your wanna-be Ken Griffey, Jr. or Ronda Rousey that professional athletes aren’t the only ones to earn a spot on a hall of fame wall when instead of heading to a sports shrine, you visit the National Inventors Hall of Fame in Alexandria, Virginia. Individuals like internet network engineers Radia Perlman or Victor Lawrence, both among this year’s 16 new inductees, are sure to inspire intellectually curious young minds.

A Collection of Master Minds
Largely responsible for helping to make the internet faster, more efficient and globally accessible, Perlman and Lawrence represent just a fraction of the vast intellectual talent pool, and resulting cultural milestones the Inventors Hall of Fame was built to honor. Relocated from Akron Ohio in 2008, the museum is located at the US Patent and Trade Office complex, and features a newly renovated exhibit space along with a Gallery of Icons dedicated to the now 500 plus inductees. Ever wondered who made technology like the Hubble Space telescope possible, or developed modern electronic telephone architecture?  You can find out at the Inventors Hall of Fame museum, not to mention its comprehensive and searchable website.

Gone Camping
And are you still looking for camp options this summer for your Thomas Edison or other inventor in the making? With a one of a kind creative problem solving curriculum inspired by the work of National Inventor Hall of Fame inductees, Camp Invention is up and running at local elementary schools in Olney, Farifax and Alexandria for future U.S. patent applicants entering grades one to six. After school programs are also offered at the same sites.

What’s New?
In addition, a new interactive exhibit features singular advances in the world of motor vehicles and photography that will pretty much knock the ear buds off your budding IT guy or gal. Intellectual Propery Power illustrates how trademarks and patented material contribute to some of the most important inventions that we take for granted every day, like modern vehicles and selfies.

Kids can be absolute troopers when it comes staying up late, but when the Sandman comes around, there’s no escaping Snooze-town! Check out these hilarious photos of kids sleeping in strange places and positions.

This babe refused to sleep unless pops was holding her, and after two hours, he decided to have his cake and eat it too.

Bedtime stories are also for Santa.

“Just one more…” Hey, we’ve all been there.

When this babe arrived to Santa already sleeping, he told the parents not to wake him up. How cute!

Sleeping on the wooden floor might actually be more comfortable in this case…

While raising a house full of boys who loved pulling their socks off, Utah mom Christine Krogue finally had a lightbulb moment with her fourth son: What if the socks were attached to pants? Her invention, Baby Undersocks, are a must-have for the coming winter months.

Baby Undersocks are soft, thermal base-layer pants made from breathable bamboo — they look a lot like the long-johns we still shimmy into as adults — with thick, cozy socks sewn onto the bottoms. The pants are a neutral cream color and can be ordered with pink, blue or matching cream sock bottoms. They have a comfortable elastic waistband and non-slip rubber grips on the feet for babies on the move.

Does the extra layer mean a little more work when you’re changing a diaper or getting baby dressed for the day? Well, yes. But with Blizzasters and Snowpocalypes on the horizon, warm tootsies are worth it. And for spending a relaxing day playing at home, we’d pull these on over a cute long-sleeved onesie and call it an outfit.

$20 per pair, available in sizes 0-3 months to 3T online at babyundersocks.com.

Your picky princess has finally settled on a dress to wear today, but her sartorial stylings do not allow for shorts, leggings or tights. They’re bunchy. Itchy. Too hot. Don’t match. On the other side, while her Disney Princess undies are undeniably adorable, they’re not something you want the whole world to see while she’s mastering the monkey bars.  Enter Broxies – a hybrid of underwear and fitted shorts that satisfies everyone’s requirements – she’s covered, cute and comfy.

Launched just this summer, Broxies are reinforced cotton underwear with the comfort and ease of underwear and the coverage of fitted shorts. Without the layers. So, what’s in a name? Well, the creator of the Broxie is a mom (of course, mothers are the mothers of invention) who grew up in South Africa, where underwear is called broekies. So when she came up with this solution to end her morning battles with her own opinionated girl, she decided to call them Broxies – broekies for the girl with plenty of moxie.

So Mom’s happy. But what about the girls? Well, we tested road tested them on several of the pickiest girls we know, and they were a resounding hit. They come in two styles – lace edged and plain, and have several adorable designs in each style to choose from. One rough and tumble girlie-girl pulled on a pair of the pink laced Broxies. “I love them! They’re so cute,” was her pronouncement, before pulling on a skort. Her mother told her that a skort wasn’t necessary. “Wait, I don’t have to wear a skort? Or tights? Can we order some more?”

Now, can someone just invent the perfect sock (you know, seamless, not too tight, not too short, not too long, not too bunchy, not too itchy…)?

Broxies run from $18-$22 a pair, come in sized 3-10, and are available online at broxies.com.

They say that necessity is the mother of all invention. In other words, when people really need to do something, ask a mother (or a father!). Parenthood is all about needs: what your kid needs emotionally, physically, nutritionally, creatively – you name it, there’s a need for it.  And sometimes what you need doesn’t exist yet.  We were inspired by these parents who were inspired by their kids needs to invent something new.  Check out these cool products that our very own LA moms & pops have been busy inventing.  They might just solve one of your own pressing needs – or inspire you to get inventing!
Neat-O’s
So, you’re making your kids lunch, and you’re stumped. You want to be environmentally friendly and pack reusable containers, but there’s only so many of those things you can shove into a lunch bag. So, you reach for the plastic baggies, and suddenly you’re not feeling like Mother Earth’s best friend. Cue LA native Rachel Ostroy to the rescue with Neat-O’s, her invention to solve this lunch-packing problem. These baggies can be reused hundreds of times, let you see the contents without opening it, and can even be personalized with drawings or labels.  They come in multiple sizes and all close with zippers, so you don’t have to worry about trying to scrape off dried food from velcro – yuck! With these awesome little gems, you might actually look forward to packing lunches every morning.

The Yes Bar
Speaking of lunches, wouldn’t it be great to reach for a pre-packed snack that wasn’t loaded with tons of sugar and preservatives? Most kids snacks on the market are stuffed with the sweet stuff (and other unpronounceable ingredients), and we either have to say no, or guiltily send our little ones off with an impending sugar high. Flashback to a kitchen in Laurel Canyon, where mom Abigail Wald was struggling with the same dilemma. Her youngest son has allergies, and not only did she need to avoid certain foods, but she wanted to give him a snack she could feel good about. These tasty treats are free of gluten, dairy and soy, and they’ll satisfy your little one’s craving for “yummy”. With these bars, you’ll get the fun of saying yes when your kiddos ask for a treat! (Note: the Coffee Cayenne is for you, while the Macadamia Chip if for your kids.  The pepper packs a bit too much punch for teeny tastebuds, but if you’re looking for a not so sweet lunch on the go for you, you’ve found it.)

Ice Cream Heads
And from healthy snacks we’ll ease on over to desserts…and the one food that kids everywhere can agree on: ice cream!  But we’re not talking about the edible variety. Huh? Let us explain.  When Los Angeles parents Brittany & Harold Perrineau and Jeff & Dr. Stefanie Phelps tried to wash their little girls’ hair, they were met with tears. Bath time was decidedly not fun. But you know what is fun? Ice cream. So these creative parents cooked up the idea to invent Ice Cream Heads, a line of sweet-smelling shampoos and conditioners that are gentle on sensitive eyes and effective on both curly and fine hair. The bottles look like ice cream cones, which means your kiddos will be begging to have their hair washed. With classic “flavors” like chocolate, strawberry and vanilla to choose from, you can’t go wrong. These folks have definitely made bath time fun again

Belly Buds
All that ice cream talk has us thinking about cravings, and of course that reminds us of pregnancy. Sardines and gummi bears, anyone? And while you’re downing that late night snack, wouldn’t it be great to chat to the baby inside your tummy? Los Angeles Dad Curtis Williams came up with the idea for Belly Buds when his wife was pregnant. She wanted to play music to her baby bump, but couldn’t move around while doing so. She needed something that stayed put so she could carry on with her day. So, Curtis created Belly Buds: specialized speakers that gently adhere to the belly & safely play memory-shaping sound directly to the womb. No more awkwardly holding up your iphone to play junior the latest hits. Belly Buds let you play music, your own voice or even recordings from far away family. A baby’s hearing begins to develop at 20 weeks, and memory forms at 30 weeks, so he or she can start to recognize the voices of every loved one before birth. We can’t think of a better way to connect with your baby before their much-anticipated arrival.

Squeeky Knees
It’s only natural to segue from babies to…baby attire. But we’re not talking about ordinary baby apparel. How about cool clothes that squeak when worn? You know babies will go gaga for something so fun! Mom Lisa Evans was inspired by her own mother, who used to tie bells on Lisa’s shoes so she could keep an ear out for her. When Lisa had two tiny crawlers of her own, she realized they were always on the go, and well…hard to keep track of! Thus the idea of Squeeky Knees was born. These well-made, adorable pants and leggings incorporate foam padding and a built-in squeaky device so little knees stay protected from bumps and scrapes, and of course crawlers adore the fun noises they make as they move. Clothing as entertainment? (And kid-tracking devices.) Yes please!

Homespun Vintage
If you like innovative design, then you’ll love filling your kids’ closet with a few bespoke pieces from Homespun Vintage. Kathlene Linehan & Corrie Sullivan were new moms in LA, sick of seeing the same old, same old baby clothes everywhere they looked, when they came up with the idea to start a clothing line that introduced vintage wear to the younger set. Meetings were held over coffees at the park while their little ones played, or when they could grab a few hours after the last bedtime story was read. These two designers set about re-purposing clothes of yesteryear to create unique outfits for little ones. Their line allows your tots to showcase the flair and charm of their personalities, and stand out from the crowd. This one-of-a-kind “wearable nostalgia” will only get better with time, so you might just want to tuck away a few pieces to pass on to your grandkids. And with outfits designed for newborns all the way up to 8 year-olds, your kiddos will be stylish for a long while.

We’re so inspired by the awesome Los Angeles parents who had great ideas and nurtured them into fruition. Cheers to them and to the kiddos who got that creative energy flowing.

Let us know if there are other local companies created by parents. We’d love to hear.  Or are there any products you’ve been dying to create?

Your little sidekick might be too young for underdogs, but she can still have a blast on the swing set. A new invention makes it easy, fun and safe for young ones to swing, even when there are no baby or toddler bucket seats in sight. Meet SwingEase, a portable mini seat that securely attaches to standard swings, converting them to fit kids 6-36 months.

SwingEase was created by two Washington D.C. moms who were tired of visiting playgrounds where they couldn’t find bucket swings or the bucket swings were unclean and insecure. Their portable helper looks like a diaper (the fit is secured by an adjustable strap) and has metal hooks that attach to standard chain swings.

Your little one can swing next to an older sibling (perfect for grabbing a photo opps). Better yet, your babe can swing with you in your lap; just attach the hooks higher and perch underneath. When you’re not using the SwingEase, it folds up snug to fit in its own portable sack, which is small enough to fit in your diaper bag.

SwingEase is brand new and up for grabs online for $39.99 at honeybeechild.com.

Would you use SwingEase? Let us know in the Comments section below.
