16 Fresh Mom & Me Styles That Make a Statement

I do so love to watch cats grooming themselves. I find it hypnotic and soothing – the smooth play of muscles as they twist and stretch, the sensual splayed toes, the darting little pink tongue, the occasional glimpse of the cat’s nethers.

My husband does not find it nearly so soothing. That’s because Dushenka takes a pause from grooming herself, she starts grooming him. This could keep her busy all day, since he has a lot to groom.

She usually starts with a brief lick to the nose, which I assume is to let him know what’s coming. Then she starts in on his beard. When she’s had her fill of that, she moves on to his eyebrows, though she occasionally misses and grooms his forehead.

Whenever Dan’s shirtless, which is usual in summer and not unknown even in winter, she goes for his prodigious chest hair. I have never seen her miss and accidentally lick his nipple, though I’m pretty sure if she did, he wouldn’t tell me. And I won’t even speculate about her grooming his nethers. They may engage in these pursuits when I’m not around, for which I’m mostly thankful, but about which I’m perversely curious.

I remember a Robin Williams routine in which he said, “If you think cats are so clean, you go eat a can of tuna fish and lick yourself all over.” By that theory, my husband is coated with a thin layer of Super Supper and cat spit, which I must block from my mind when I hug him.

Dushenka occasionally gives my nose a lick, but that’s as far as she goes. Cats in general find no pleasure in grooming me, although I once had a cat, Julia, who was irresistibly drawn to roll on my head whenever I had my hair done at a salon. I think she was enamored of the coconut-scented mousse my stylist used, though I know of no of no other cat attracted to coconut.

I also once knew a cat who, when I was sitting on a sofa, was drawn to my curly-permed ponytail. But she did not slurp. She pounced, apparently believing that my ‘do was some sort of rodent or other cat toy.

The only time I experienced a lengthy cat-grooming attempt was when Dan rubbed catnip on my leg. (Thankfully, I was wearing jeans.) Lick, lick, slurp, slurp ensued, until I had a round, damp spot on my thigh.

But ultimately, this post is not about cat spit, or tongue-prints, or even pants-licking. The take-away from this is: Cats groom their kittens. My husband’s mother, therefore, is the cat Dushenka, and he is her child. Please don’t tell the woman who birthed and raised him. Her claim has been challenged. And we all know what happens when you engage in a war of wills with a cat.

The cat wins.

Hi! I'm a freelance writer and editor who writes about education, books, cats and other pets, bipolar disorder, and anything else that interests me. I live in Ohio with my husband and a varying number of cats.

Fashion Stylist + mom helping you live your stylishly and shop smarter.

I’ve been a professional commercial and personal stylist for 12 years, but it wasn’t until I became a mom that I started to reevaluate my wardrobe. I used to buy whatever was on sale, on trend and caught my eye. Now that I have kids, I’ve realized the importance of having key pieces that work for your life. Whether I’m shopping for myself or my clients, I always keep this in mind.

It’s even more essential to create a capsule wardrobe for your postpartum life, as you are busy, sleep deprived and need to make your wardrobe work for your new body and life. I wish I knew this instead of trying to make my pre-existing wardrobe work for me the first time I had a baby. I ended up with stretched out shirts from attempting to nurse in them and ripped jeans that didn’t fit.

I recommend sizing up in an affordable pair of jeans if you’re desperate like me to feel like your old self in while you lose the baby weight, which can take quite some time. If you’re like most people, you can’t have too many postpartum leggings (compression, high waisted and comfortable).

You’ll also want timeless pieces that are easy access for breastfeeding and easy to pair together for ease of getting dressed in the morning, even with all the coffee in the world. The last thing most new moms want is to look like they’re wearing maternity or even nursing clothing, so I’ve rounded up some of my favorite postpartum essentials that make you feel like yourself again while you’re busy with a baby on your boob and trying to do it all. The best part is you’ll likely wear these pieces for years to come (yes, even your nursing bras—once you go there, you’ll never want to go back to regular bras!).

Kids seem to grow literally overnight, and they outgrow their clothing just as quickly. So what do you do with all those adorable duds they (or you, if you’re cleaning out your own closet) no longer need? There are a lot of companies and services that will help you clean out your closet and donate clothing. Not only can you put those clothes to good use, but you’ll also help the planet by reducing waste. That’s a definite mom win. Keep reading to see our favorite spots to recycle and donate clothes below.

**Editor’s Note: Due to the COVID-19 crisis, we suggest checking to make sure any retail locations listed below are currently accepting donations.

H&M

H&M

This Swedish retailer is well-known for its discount prices and stylish fashions, but it has also become recognized for its leading role in sustainability practices among the retail industry. Not only does H&M sell garments that are made with eco-conscious sustainable materials and recycled textiles, but it also allows shoppers to donate clothing for recycling. All you have to do is bag up your items and bring them to any location worldwide. H&M will accept any textiles, from mismatched socks to old sheets. For each bag of textiles you drop off, you'll earn a discount card for 15% off your next in-store purchase.

Gap

BusinessWire

Gap, Inc. has partnered with resale company thredUP to make it easy for customers to donate and recycle clothing. At select Gap brand stores, including Gap, Banana Republic, Athleta and Janie and Jack you can pick up a free thredUP kit, which includes a Clean Out bag or a mailing label. Pack up your unwanted items, and send them in. If any items are accepted for resale, you can receive cash or store credit. If you opt to receive store credit and use it at any Gap Inc. brands you’ll receive an additional 15% off your purchase. Any items that aren’t accepted for resale can either be sent back to you for a fee or recycled.

Patagonia

Yukiko Matsuoka via Flickr

Considering Patagonia’s mission statement is “in business to save our home planet,” it should come as no big surprise that the company offers a recycling program for all of its products. You can either drop off your used Patagonia products in-store at your nearest location or you can mail them to the address below:

Patagonia Service Center
8550 White Fir Street
Reno, NV 89523-8939

The North Face

Athrasher via Flickr

With the Clothes the Loop program, The North Face invites customers to bring in unwanted clothing or shoes of any brand to help keep those items out of landfills. All items are then sent to the company’s nonprofit partner Soles4Souls whose mission is to create sustainable jobs. The organization repurposes and redistributes donated items. When you make an in-store donation you’ll earn a $10 rebate on your next purchase of $100 or more at The North Face. Check here to find the nearest The North Face location.

Blue Jeans Go Green

Pexels

Denim is made from cotton which can be recycled and repurposed, which is good news for all those too-small pairs of jeans in your drawers. The American Cotton Producers and Importers are behind the Blue Jeans Go Green program, which allows you to donate your old jeans. Donated jeans are repurposed into housing insulation to be used in buildings constructed by Habitats for Humanity. While you can drop your jeans off at specific retailers for recycling, thanks to Zappos for Good, you can also mail them in for free. Just box up your jeans, print a free mailing label here, and they’ll take care of the rest.

Levi’s

Mike Mozart via Flickr

The godfather of jeans also offers an easy way to recycle those dungarees, along with everything else in the closet. Levi’s will accept all clothing and shoe donations at any of its retail locations throughout the United States. All items donated will be repurposed or recycled through Levi’s partnership with I:CO. You’ll also score a voucher with your donation for 20% off a single, regular-priced item purchased in-store at Levi’s.

Pact

Pact

This sustainable fashion company is all about offering eco-friendly, organic alternatives for the whole family. It also wants to ensure that its products are long lasting and don’t end up in a landfill, which is why Pact has partnered with Give Back Box to help you easily donate any unwanted items instead of discarding them. Reuse the Pact box your items came in, and pack it up with any clothing, shoes or accessories you no longer want. You can print a prepaid label here and mail the box in for donation.

Give Back Box

Pexels

You can also go straight to the source and reuse any retailer box you have at home to make a donation through Give Back Box directly. Simply pack up the box with clothing or household items, print the free label and send it off. When you make your donation through the Give Back Box site, you also have the option to choose a specific charity to receive your donation. You will pay a $15 fee to print the mailing label, rather than printing one for free.

Salvation Army

Mike Mozart via Flickr

You’re likely already familiar with this organization to drop off donations, but did you know they also provide pick-ups, so you can add one less thing to your to-do list? Simply bag up your items and visit the Salvation Army online to schedule a pick up time.

Here’s How You Can Buy Hand-Me-Down Kids’ Clothes from the Kardashians

12 Clothing Subscription Services Just for Kids

One of the founding concepts at AVYN is that motherhood changes everything, but it doesn’t have to change your style. However, how do you keep your personal st‌yle rocking with waaay less time to get ready? Developing a quick, easy routine with a few staple wardrobe options will significantly help manage your mornings and keep your stress levels at bay. Below are my top five ways to crush your morning routine.

1. Dry Shampoo. While we may have time for a quick shower here and there, we in no way have the luxury of washing, drying and styling our hair everyday. Enter stage left, Living Proof Dry Shampoo. This stuff actually cleans your hair while also eliminating oil and adding some texture. When I think about all the precious free time I wasted on my hair prior to becoming a mom, I dramatically heavy sigh at what a damn fool I was.

2. Balm Stick. The pocket-sized Olio balm stick is locally made in Portland, Oregon and I cannot get enough of it. I want to put it all over my body and call myself pink. For a more conservative approach, simply apply it to your cheeks for a touch of color, moisturize your lips, or tame flyaways. The No. 2 French Melon is my favorite and I promise, this snappy color works for everyone. Buy two, one for home and one for your purse.

3. Bomb Jeans. Levi has taken ‘mom jeans’ to a whole new level with their new rib cage high jeans. Never again will you hike up jeans every time you bend down to pick up a toy and your phone will never fall out of the back pockets. It’s like your whole body is snugly tucked away in a denim hug.

4. Comfy Shoes (but still cute, duh). The Italian shoe company SugerGa had comfort and casual cool in mind when they designed these street-friendly studs. They were made to walk 500 miles (and I would walk 500 more) plus they literally pair well with EVERYTHING in your closet, whether you’re wearing cropped jeans, a dress, or shorts. They come in a rainbow of colors and a few animal prints.

5. The Perfect Bra. Obviously, I’m going to include our AVYN Bras on this list, but I’m going to politely add them at the end of the list in an effort to be subtle. Honestly though, since designing and manufacturing these bras, my morning routine has this element of simplicity I didn’t have before. I no longer have to think about what bra I’m going to wear because I love them all and they all feel like butter. Plain and simple.

Here’s to wonderful days full of big hair, rosy cheeks, and well-supported boobs.

This post originally appeared on shopavyn.com.

I'm an outdoor enthusiast, travel junkie, exercise nerd and co-founder of AVYN. After having my son 4 years ago, I saw a need on the market for athletic-st‌yle nursing bras. AVYN Bras allow women to do "all the things" while still being stylish enough for happy hour. You can find us at shopAVYN.com.

As timeless as the books themselves, we will never get tired of Harry Potter-themed merchandise––especially when it’s an awesome Mini Boden Harry Potter collab.

Boden has partnered with Warner Bros. to conjure up a whopping 81-piece Harry Potter apparel collection for Mini Boden. The “elevated collection” features prints, embroidered designs, color-changing sequins and intricate appliqués inspired by the Wizarding World. Here’s your first look at some of the most magical pieces in the new line.

Hedwig Sweater

Young wizards will be plenty cozy wrapped up in Hedwig's wings.

Hogwarts Bodysuits

One body suit for each house in a four-pack means your mini wizard can represent no matter where you get sorted.

Bertie Bots T-Shirt

You'll be dreaming of the rainbow of flavors decked out in this tee.

Hogwarts Printed Dress

This comfy dress is the perfect look for conjuring up some fun.

Lightning Bolt Jeans

These jeans are electric!

Harry Potter Play Sets

Magical threads that are perfect for a play date with your tiny wizards.

Hedwig Dungarees

These yellow overalls are about as extra as it gets.

Platform 9 3/4 Sequin T-Shirt

Sequins reveal the magical spot that will send you on your way to the Hogwarts Express.

Harry Potter Long John Pajamas

Little wizards will be dreaming of spells and Quidditch matches in these cozy PJs.

Items are available in sizes newborn to 16 to fit young wizards and muggles of all ages. A second wave of the collection will drop Oct. 7, just in time for Halloween and the start of the holiday season.

Eleven-year-old Sasha Bogosian was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at birth and has spent a big part of her life receiving treatment at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. She hasn’t let her challenges stop her from pursuing her dreams, however, and thanks to her artwork she has managed to raise thousands for the hospital through The Sasha Project LA.

When she was nine years old Sasha underwent a procedure that put her in an ankle-to-hip cast for 60 days. To keep her occupied during that time, Sasha’s mom Isabell taught her how to paint on clothing. Her new found skill quickly transformed into a passion and Sasha began to paint custom jeans.

Sasha didn’t stop there, however. She wanted to help other patients with her new passion and, together with her mom, she established The Sasha Project LA, a non-profit raising funds for CHLA’s art therapy programs. For a donation Sasha will handpaint your jeans or other denim item and all of the proceeds go to the Mark Taper-Johnny Mercer Artists Program at CHLA, which allows patients and their families the chance to express themselves through dance, drama, visual arts and music.

Sasha’s art work has caught the attention of many celebs who have ordered her custom designs. Now something of a celebrity herself, Sasha and her mom Isabell are starring in a new web series, Real Moms, which follows the stories of ten moms who bond through raising children with life-altering medical conditions.
