Editor’s note: We’re making every effort to provide you with the most up-to-date information. However, sometimes closures occur at the last minute due to circumstances beyond our control, such as the spread of Covid-19. We highly recommend that you call ahead or check websites before you pack your kids (and all those snacks, and diapers…) and haul them across town. Stay safe!

Chicagoans are no strangers to being stuck indoors for long stretches with our oftentimes unpredictable weather. But this COVID-19 is a whole new beast that will test the patience of even the most resilient cabin-fever battlers. Take a midday recess from schoolwork, art projects and sibling rivalry to take a walk outside to stretch those legs. Illinois State Parks are closed until further notice, but read on to learn where you or your child’s caregiver can feed your soul with a touch of nature.

Maple Grove

Maple Grove is the largest remaining remnant of the vast maple forest that became present-day Downers Grove and is both a rare historic forest and a valuable natural area. Categorized as a globally endangered ecosystem, this preserve has multipurpose and interpretative trails where hikers can appreciate wildflowers and hundreds of plant species, some of which are threatened or endangered. The variety of birds and the great-horned owl will definitely maintain the attention of little hikers. Visitors are welcome to bring their own grills to expand the hike into a fun family picnic.

What was once a Civilian Conservation Corps Camp is now an urban wildlife haven that plays host to a variety of animals with the original visitor center and several of the shelters still standing. Fullersburg maintains two trails manageable for families to hike or bike. A 1.3-mile interpretive trail follows Salt Creek through lowland woods and restored prairies and includes information on DuPage’s natural history.

Hikers, bikers and stroller jockeys can take advantage of this 2,492-acre forest preserve created long ago by meltaways from the Wisconsin Glacier. Adventure seekers can trek as many as 11 miles of limestone and turf-covered routes via four mapped trails through Waterfall Glen’s most scenic areas which include overlooks and a man-made waterfall.

Kettle Moraine State Forest

Thanks to the Wisconsin Glacier over 10,000 years ago, this beautiful playground for outdoor adventurers exists. Kettle Moraine consists of 6 units that display a variety of ecosystems with everything from lakes to bogs and rivers to swamps and activities that range from bird watching (that can be done from the comfort of a stroller) to mountain biking. While the number of trails is expansive, there are quite a few half-mile trails that are home to bullfrogs and cattails which are perfect for little ones just lacing up their first pair of hiking boots.

North Park Nature Village

Kyle H. via Yelp

North Park Nature Village, a 46-acre nature preserve, offers a big breath of fresh air in the middle of the city. The Nature Center is closed at at this time, but hiking trail is available to visitors. At a slow pace, it takes about an hour to hike the entire loop, making this a great hike for little legs.

The best part of this trail is that it provides a beautiful snapshot of Illinois' diverse flora and fauna, carrying hikers through wetlands, tallgrass prairie land, forests and even oak savanna. Wood ducks, geese, garden snakes, painted turtles, deer, raccoons, foxes, bullfrogs, kingfishers, crayfish, and great blue herons all call this corner of the city home. Step atop the observational area, raised up from the Main Loop trail about halfway along the wetlands, where you'll have a better view of the stunning native landscape.

It should be noted that while the Chicago lakefront is normally a great place to take a run or walk, much of it is closed because of the high lake levels. Check the City of Chicago Lakefront Closures and Caution Areas map before going to see which sections are open and walkable. Brookfield Zoo and Lincoln Park Zoo have also closed their grounds to visitors in response to COVID-19.

12 Pretend Potions Your Kids Can Mix Up Today

After years of anticipation the new Star Wars-themed land at Disney Parks is finally open and our dreams of a galaxy far, far away have come true. Getting in and seeing it all might seem like it takes a Jedi mind trick, however, with the crowds of fans wanting a peek.

Here’s everything we know about the new Star Wars-themed land, including the answer to how to get into Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge!

Getting In

Disney Parks

The good news: you no longer need a reservation to get into Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. The bad news: you still need to plan in advance if you want to get inside. Starting Jun. 24 entrance into the new land no longer requires advance reservations, but it might not be as simple as just walking in. All park attendees are free to enter the land until it hits capacity, which judging by its popularity so far will likely happen as soon as the park opens. Once the land hits capacity, park guests can register through a new virtual queue system to be given an assigned boarding group with a two-hour window to return later in the day. The virtual queue will be accessible through the Disneyland app so make sure you have it loaded and ready to go once you enter the park.

Disney Resort hotel guests will no longer have preferred access to Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, however, getting into the park during Early Morning Magic hours guarantees that you will make it to the land entrance before park attendees waiting at the gates.

Some Attractions Still Require Reservations

Disney Parks

The most popular attractions in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge currently require advance reservations to enter: Oga's Cantina and Savi's Workshop - Handcrafted Lightsabers. Both can be accessed via a same-day reservation starting at 7 a.m. through the Disneyland app or on Disneyland.com, whether you're in the park or not. You'll need a credit card to place the reservation and you will be charged a no-show fee of $10 for Oga's Cantina and the full cost of Savi's lightsaber show, $199. Making these reservations also has the perk of guaranteeing you access into the land with no boarding passes needed. Each lightsaber attendee can bring two guests who are also guaranteed entry.

Opening Day

Disneyland's Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge is officially open, while the Walt Disney World version is set to debut on Aug. 29, 2019.

Intergalactic Eats

From Blue Milk to Fried Endorian Yip Tip, the food and drink offerings at Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge are out of this world. The new land will feature several restaurants and food stalls including Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo, Ronto Roasters, Kat Saka’s Kettle in the Black Spire Market and more.

Awesome Merch

It wouldn’t be a trip to Disney Parks without some amazing souvenirs to bring home. Star Wars: A Galaxy’s Edge will feature tons of fabulous merchandise fans will be able to buy clothes, collectibles and Star Wars-themed toys from several shops, including Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities, Savi’s Workshop, where guests can customize and build their own unique lightsabers (for $199.99) and the First Order Cargo and the Resistance Supply. There will also be market stalls like Toydarian Toys, the Creature Stall and The Jewels of Bith. And just in case you want a droid of your very own, you can personalize one for $99.99 at the Droid Depot.

There Will Be Alcohol

Kent Phillips/Disney Parks

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge visitors will be able to toast to their good fortune over a glass of Fuzzy Tauntaun at Ooga's Cantina. Not only is this local watering hole an epic spot to grab a drink among intergalactic smugglers, but it will be the first place within Disneyland (besides Club 33) where guests can enjoy an alcoholic beverage.

Black Spire Outpost

Disney Parks

The village at the heart of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge finally has a name. As Disney Parks Blog explained, Black Spire Outpost is what the largest settlement on the planet of Batuu will be called. The outpost is a stomping ground for "traders, adventurers, and smugglers traveling around the Outer Rim and Wild Space.” The spires are in fact the petrified remains of ancient trees that stand at the heart of the outpost.

The Millennium Falcon

Disney Parks

Fans have been treated to glimpses of what the new lands will look like, but nothing really captures just how incredible it will be quite like this sneak peek aboard the Millennium Falcon attraction. While it’s reminiscent of Star Tours, the ride takes the experience of traveling in hyperspeed even further out of this galaxy by letting riders actually pilot the aircraft.

A Hotel Not So Far, Far Away

Disney Parks

The Star Wars experience won’t stop after you leave the park. Visitors will be invited to rest their heads among the stars in an intergalactic Star Wars-themed resort that "will be seamlessly connected to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.” Unlike any other resort experience in the world, guests will be fully immersed in the Star Wars universe with details, like windows that appear to look out into a view of space. We can’t wait to check in!

The Scope

Disney Parks

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge is going to be huge figuratively and literally. The new land will take the parks to new heights with its towering stone spires and AT-ATs. Not only is the new land massive, but it is also incredibly accurate down to the tiniest details. When you enter the sprawling, epic new area you will feel like you've actually landed on an entirely different planet.

The Cast

Disneyland via Instagram

Judging by a recent Instagram post, the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge cast is massive. The pre-opening pic features what looks like hundreds of park cast members, ready and waiting for the attraction's grand debut. Not only does the IG post show a crowd of cast members, fans also got a sneak peek into what the costumes look like!

Leaked Video of Disney’s New Star Wars Millennium Falcon Ride Looks Insanely Cool

Is there one thing children know too much or too little about kindness? I thought, perhaps, reading and doing math are essential skills to have in life. By all means, I do believe those are meaningful educational goals. Then, I wondered if kindness and compassion are still valuable lessons to learn.

There is nothing more important in the world than letting children know the importance of kindness. Why go through the process of even teaching children the value of compassion?

I wasn’t aware the impact of kindness until I experience it myself. Even though I often spare my extra change for the red kettle that rings with compassion outside the grocery store, I often wonder how far does that quarter go.

If only those 25-cents could talk, I think it might say that all together it helps someone have brighter holidays or help someone find a job, desperately. When you teach children to be kind, it’s a worthwhile opportunity to let them experience the wonders of community. Whether it’s a learning experience or an occasion to make children know what it means to give from the heart, it’s a chance to offer compassion. It is undoubtedly vital to let them do so at any age whenever they see an opportunity to help someone.

Would going to a homeless shelter help them realize how vital it is to have food? The majority might see it as a guilt trip. In reality, it is a thankful approach to life. Teaching them to recognize the part of life that they should be grateful teaches them such a valuable lesson. In essence, when we take the time to explain that this is not a negative aspect of life but a remarkable way to help someone else.

By helping to collect coats, blankets, food supplies, or serving food in homeless shelters, I’m adding value to my life and those around me. It is an experience to cherish for life. A new perspective on life is upon me when I think those few coins can make a world of difference. Yes, whether it is a small gesture such as dropping coins in the red bucket Salvation Army or collecting toys for Toys for Tots, the need to think besides my ‘wants’ and desires are more powerful than receiving something from someone else.

Don’t let the valuable lesson stop there. Carry on the kindness of helping others by serving in other ways throughout the year.

Autumn sure is packed with fun kids events, but that doesn’t mean you (mom and dad!) have to sit on the sidelines. Nothing screams grown-up fun more than a road trip through the Bay Area to visit some great breweries and taste delicious autumn-themed beers. Our friends at 7×7 have put together fabulous suggestions on places to try tasty brewskies that will make you feel the Fall Spirit in the best way possible. Sit, relax, and drink up…. adults need their treats, too.

Just as seasons vary from one part of the country to another, so do regional seasonal beers. In the east, the local brewpubs are all about pumpkin ales this time of year. On the west coast, we have the succulent orange squash as well, which is the subject of a future blog, but right now it’s the end of our hop harvest season and time to enjoy beer bittered with fresh or “wet” hops. We asked the experts for their tasty suggestions for autumn brews.

Dave McLean, brewmaster and owner of Magnolia and the owner of Alembic Bar, explained the concept of fresh hopped beers. “Hops are very fragile when picked and need to be carefully dried to preserve them for use throughout the year. Fresh hop beers eliminate the drying step and are made using just-picked hops that are taken from field to waiting brew kettle in as short a time as possible, before any degradation might occur. This usually means getting them from the grower to the brewer in less than 48 hours.” He adds, “Since the hops aren’t dried, the flavor profile manifests all of the hops. Essentially, none of the most volatile flavors and aromas are driven off during processing.” Dave notes that Magnolia still has a limited quantity of their wet-hopped beer, High Time Harvest Ale, available, but expects that it, like the season itself, will soon be gone.
