If there’s any time to start thinking about vacation, the holidays are it. Whether you’re dreaming of a break from the cold, thinking of an absolutely epic gift, or just need to get away after the whirlwind of the season, it’s hard for travel to not be on all our minds. And when we say Villa La Valencia Beach Resort & Spa in Los Cabos, Mexico delivers the ultimate epic gift/break from the cold/just need a getaway vacation of your dreams, we speak from first-hand experience.

Located on the stunning Golden Beach in Los Cabos, Mexico, Villa La Valencia is one of the newest all-inclusive resorts in the area. And in a location filled with resorts, the only way to stand out is by being…well, the best. And they are.

When You Arrive…

Villa La Valencia Lobby

From the second you step onto the property, you know you’re officially on vacation (of course, the full-service beach-inspired bar ready to serve you as soon as you walk outside of the Los Cabos airport helps, too). The clean, bright, wide-open expanse of the lobby includes the La Jolla Bar and an unbelievable view of the rooms, pools, and ocean (along with seating to enjoy that view).

Villa La Valencia Terraza Lobby

Every single staff member we met smiled with a hand over their heart (a signature of The Villa Group’s properties). We were guided through the check-in, and given our wristbands to wear during our stay that serve as both room keys and access to all the amenities (how easy is that?).

Speaking of Amenities…

Villa La Valencia Pools

The first thing you’ll notice (we’re pretty sure everyone does) is the collection of pools that span all the way to the beach. A serene adults-only pool, complete with cabanas, leads into the ultimate family pool featuring kiddo-friendly depths and lots of seating. Want to get a little closer to the beach? The infinity pool at the edge of the property is what resort life is all about.

Villa La Valencia Infinity Pool

Each pool offers poolside service from the relaxed Coralle Pool Bar & Restaurant, located right next to the infinity pool, along with a hot tub in each space. And, of course, there’s beach access with private lounging and food service.

Villa La Valencia Beach

But the real star of the show? The unbelievable lazy river that wraps around the whole interior of the property. Float for a lap or two, or relax as long as you want—it’s the longest lazy river in Cabo. Everyone is welcome.

Villa La Valencia Lazy River

Villa La Valencia’s amenities don’t stop there. A wellness and fitness center offers a hydrotherapy circuit. The Azul Spa onsite features luxury massages and facials, body treatments, and even the option to have your in-room bathtub turned into a private spa experience. We highly recommend the After-Sun Treatment if you find yourself a little red (it’s really easy to forget to reapply sunscreen when you’re floating that lazy river. Trust us.).

Welcome to Your Room

Villa La Valencia Suite

Each of Villa La Valencia’s 308 suites is ultra-comfortable, spacious, and complete with either a pool or ocean view (to enjoy on the furnished balcony, of course). They offer accommodations for couples, families, and groups up to 12 people. A soaking tub, rain shower, and twin vanity mean every part of your room is an experience.

Villa La Valencia One-Bedroom Suite

Villa La Valencia offers full kitchens, washers and dryers, an honor bar (restocked daily), and so much more. From one-bedroom studio suites to the three-bedroom penthouse, these spaces make it almost too hard to leave at all. Almost.

Make Sure You Come Hungry

Latitud 23.5 Steakhouse

From the breezy, casual El Patrón Restaurant, the chic, fine dining of Latitud 23.5 Steakhouse, to the open-air Italian kitchen at La Taberna, you literally can’t go wrong. The servers at each onsite restaurant addressed us by name and each meal was an incredible event. Of course, they’re not all on the formal side. For casual breakfast (with an unbelievable buffet), El Patrón is the place to be. Dine right by the ocean and infinity pool at Coralle, and snag quick snacks at Palmita Market & Deli. Wrap up your evening at La Jolla Bar for the perfect nightcap.

El Patrón Restaurant

You can catch live music, tequila tastings, and different culinary events, too, that make sure no two meals are exactly the same.

There’s Something for Everyone

Kids Club

As parents ourselves, we adore that Villa La Valencia recognizes that kiddos relax differently than adults. The large, brightly-colored Kids Club offers a place for your littles to let loose and have a blast. Video games, movies, tie-dye class, face painting, scavenger hunts, arts and crafts—kids will love having a place fully dedicated to them.

Villa La Valencia Nighttime Aerial View

Nightlife is just as much fun. Family movie night, blackjack, live music—there’s always something going on. During our visit, we got to check out their Art Walk and Taco Night (complete with a high-energy saxophone duo). Villa La Valencia is constantly coming up with ways to keep your vacation feeling like one every single second you’re there.

Los Cabos

Los Cabos is also famous for stunning beaches and clear water. Options to book tours, ATV rentals, jet ski adventures, glass-bottom boat tours, whale-watching, horseback riding, and more are all available. You seriously don’t want to miss these experiences.

Sister Properties

We were lucky enough to get to tour Villa La Valencia’s gorgeous sister properties right in Los Cabos: Villa del Palmar, Villa del Arco, and Villa La Estancia. Each resort is as beautiful as we’d come to expect from The Villa Group, and each offers a unique experience that caters to everyone’s pricing preferences and accommodation needs.

Be Prepared to be Treated Like Family

Every single minute we spent at Villa La Valencia was truly magic. And while the jaw-dropping resort, luxurious rooms, and top-tier dining were all part of it, we have to say that the best part was the people. There wasn’t a single staff member who didn’t make us feel like we were the only guests there, who didn’t go absolutely above and beyond for us, and who stopped to smile with a hand over their heart when they chatted with us. ‘Welcoming’ is an understatement.

From the pools to the Kids Club and the indescribable beauty of Los Cabos and its people, Villa La Valencia Beach Resort & Spa offers an unparalleled family vacation that you won’t be able to wait to experience again.

Make sure to check out their many deals and special offers to make your next vacation the most memorable yet.

Float a few laps in the lazy river that winds its way around the hotel and water park, and on the way back to the infinity pool, pick up wood-fired pizza for the whole family

When you walk into the Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun, the first thing you’ll notice is the open tile lobby with sweeping views of the ocean and an infinity pool with sunken lounges that seem to float above a grand outdoor auditorium.

The second thing you’ll notice is that the Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun is a resort for everyone. Whether you’re on an adults-only trip, a family vacation, or a multi-generational reunion, there are activities, restaurants, and amenities to meet every need. Want to spend the day lounging in the sunshine? Choose from two pools, lazy rivers, or the beach with a mellow surf. Want to enjoy an adults-only dinner? Arrange for the kids to spend time in the three-level kids’ club while you dine at Ma Maison. Want to catch the nightly entertainment as a family? Be sure to get there early for the age-appropriate excitement, and then (if you can!) tuck the kids into bed and enjoy the adult fun.

Something else that’s hard to miss? The attentive staff, milling around the lobby welcoming guests with refreshing drinks and answering any questions, ready to get your vacation started. You can even upgrade your experience if you book a room as a part of the Diamond Club. You’ll bypass the check-in area at the front of the hotel and head for a private check-in lounge, where you’ll meet your butler, one of several perks included in the package. You have access to your butler all day, and they will book your dining reservations and check on activities for your group.

What’s the Best Thing to Do at Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun?

Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun splash park and lazy river

Once settled in one of the rooms or suites, prepare for serious water park fun! The Royalton Splash has one of the biggest water parks in the Caribbean—with 14 water slides (four are for little kids), two lazy rivers, an impressive splash pad, and two incredible infinity pools, it’ll be hard to convince your family to do anything but play in the water. Once everyone’s had their fill of fun on the slides, take the short jaunt down to the beach, where you’ll find a pristine stretch of sand with almost no surf, making it ideal for little kids. Guests can rent sailboats, kayaks, and paddleboards.

If you and your group need a break from the sun, hang out at Game Up, where you can book bowling lanes, play laser tag, and jump on indoor trampolines. There’s also an incredible gym and outdoor multisport court for young adult and adult guests, and for those wanting to check out the spa, opt for a Mommy & Me facial package or a hydrotherapy session (Diamond Club guests get a one-hour complimentary hydrotherapy session).

Food at the Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun is a serious business

Agave is a restaurant in the Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun resort

If you’ve come on vacation for a diverse selection of dining options, the Royalton Splash Riveria Cancun does not disappoint. There are ten restaurants included in your all-inclusive package, and nine of them welcome all ages. Enjoy a Teppanyaki experience alongside fresh sushi at Zen, or dine on exquisite steak paired with premiere wine at Royalton signature Hunter Steakhouse. Fire up your tastebuds at Taj, which offers authentic Indian cuisine, feast on ribs and other southern specialties at Smoke BBQ, or enjoy the open views, ocean breezes, and fresh Italian fare at beachfront Grazie Italian Trattoria.

Gourmet Marche offers buffet-style dining with a little bit of everything for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and for a unique dining experience, a night at The Cave is a must. With a subterranean feel, sparkling lights, and cuisine made with local ingredients and inspired by global culture, you can’t miss a night here. There is also a gelato shop next to the splash park for a sweet treat, a grill serving kid favorites like chicken tenders, cheeseburgers, and hot dogs, and a food truck serving up freshly made tacos and quesadillas.

The entertainment does not disappoint

What about the Royalton White Party?

Every Friday at a Royalton Resort is the White Party, and the Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun is no exception. Find your way to the heart of the resort, where you’ll be swept away on a wave of dance energy sparkling lights. Other nights have live music, dancing, cultural performances, and more.  During the day, you can head to the lobby and see what activities are happening: think Bocce Ball, Ping Pong, trivia, beach soccer, and even water polo.

Whether you prefer an all-inclusive resort or a traditional property with lots to do nearby, these resorts in the Mexican Caribbean are kid-friendly and parent-approved

Cancún is a vacation destination that has it all: clear turquoise waters and white sand beaches that rival the most exclusive tropical islands, delicious cuisine by top chefs from around the world, and a bevy of resorts—across price points, too—offering the types of accommodations, entertainment, and amenities you dream about for the ultimate family getaway. Thanks to their ideal locations, impressive kids’ clubs, and reliable service, these family friendly Cancún resorts top our list for vacationing with kids.

Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun

Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun is a family friendly cancun resort

This all-inclusive family-friendly Cancun resort opened in late December 2022. Ideal for generational vacations, the property welcomes you with sweeping, open views of the ocean and pools, as well as the main stage, which sits in the center of the resort. There are 12 restaurants that range from French cuisine to Indian food, Hunter's Steakhouse (a Royalton resort classic), Italian food served overlooking the Caribbean, a food truck serving up freshly-made quesadillas and tacos, and much more. The beach is a short step away from the pool, and there's a show every night that starts with kid-friendly activities and evolves into a party for adults. Read more about it here.

Kids will love: the Royalton Splash is home to one of the largest water parks in Mexico, offering 14 waterslides and two lazy rivers to guests. There is a three-story kids' club and activities happen around the resort all day.

Planet Hollywood Cancún, An Autograph Collection All-Inclusive Resort

If you’ve got an active kid who won’t sit still, a standard beach vacation may not cut it on the stimulation front. Enter Planet Hollywood, so full of nonstop activity that the words “I’m bored” will evaporate from their saucy vocabulary. Nice beaches, pools, and entertainment are all a given; what’s special here are their exclusive activities like learning to surf (or practicing your moves) in the FlowRider® Surf Pool, designing your own movie sets and costumes at the appropriately themed Stars Kids Club, or catching a flick (with unlimited popcorn and soda, of course) at the on-site cinema. Find guaranteed fun for everyone in the family at the lazy river: while kids zoom down a wicked waterslide, parents can float up to a bar inside a cave.

Kids will love: basking in a roaring round of applause, just for them. The entire resort lobby (staff, guests, costumed superheroes, etc.) pauses the action to cheer loudly for each guest when they first arrive

Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach Cancún – All Inclusive

The waves can get a little rough in some parts of Cancún, but not here; Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach is located on the calmest strip of beach in the Hotel Zone, making it the perfect base for families with little ones or avid swimmers. It’s also a quieter, more private area, meaning limited interruptions from vendors who walk the beach. The resort recently spent a cool $2 million refreshing its Coral KidZ Club for the Gen Z audience; cutting-edge technology and more than 40 indoor and outdoor activities rank it one of the top kids’ clubs in all of Latin America.

Kids will love: the 5,166-sq-ft outdoor play area, which features a climbable “Mayan temple,” a “spray ground” with a wading pool and water guns, and a giant sandbox

Kempinski Hotel Cancún

One of Cancún’s most iconic resorts, the Ritz-Carlton, was recently taken over and rebranded by Kempinski, a European luxury hotel brand. All the best traits have so far stayed the same: incomparable service, renowned dining, and completely customizable children’s programming, led by the property’s 10-year kids’ club veteran, Karla Rubio Chi. Karla will greet your family at check-in and schedule activities for your little ones around your family’s schedule. Crafting is usually a big hit (entertained kids + a creative souvenir to remember their vacation by? Yes please!), as well as nature walks and scavenger hunts around the grounds. Mini adventurers love to scout for iguanas, binoculars in hand, and upon finding their nest, feed the critters bananas!

Kids will love: meeting new friends from across the United States, Mexico, and now Europe. The property has long been popular with families from across North America, who tend to return annually. Kempinski’s goal is to introduce a completely new geographic demographic—the European market—to the beauty of Cancún

Royal Uno All-Inclusive Resort & Spa

Royal Uno® All Inclusive Resort & Spa

Royal Resorts is one of only a few hotel brands that has been in Cancún since the destination’s founding; so much of what Cancún is today is because of the example they set (and continue to) with hospitality and amenities. Their newest property, Royal Uno, just opened last year on what might be Mexico’s most desirable stretch of beach and is the picture-perfect image of what a family-friendly all-inclusive should be. Children will spend hours of fun at the Uno Kids club, sliding into and splashing around the pools, and frolicking along the white sand. The restaurants offer gourmet cuisine while remaining approachable to picky eaters; an entertaining (and delicious) Teppanyaki dinner at Aora is a must.

Kids will love: staying in a ground-floor suite, which has a grassy yard beyond your terrace to play on, and direct access to the beach and ocean for easy comings and goings. Some of the rooms even have Murphy beds!

JW Marriott Cancun Resort

As convenient as an all-inclusive can be, one of the top reasons not to stay in one is so you have the opportunity to properly indulge in (and expose your kids to) Cancún’s outstanding dining scene. JW Marriott Cancun is located within walking distance from some of the best restaurants in town, and has plenty of knockouts on the property itself: Hana, the first and only Polynesian restaurant in the Mexican Caribbean, and Sacbé Beach Shack, located on the sand with swinging chairs and great tacos, are two not to miss. Every guest room at the JW has a private balcony and ocean view, and interestingly enough, it is the only resort in Latin America with a certified PADI diving pool: 18 feet deep and decorated with an artificial coral reef, it’s the perfect way to introduce youngins in a safe and convenient way to the magic of snorkeling and scuba diving

Kids will love: running between the JW and its connecting sister property, the Marriott Cancún Resort. Guests at the JW can access both resorts: double the pools = double the fun

NIZUC Resort & Spa

Regularly voted one of the most beautiful resorts in the world, NIZUC falls into the rare category of offering high luxury while being truly a family friendly Cancun resort (rather than family-tolerating, like some other swanky resorts). Their location, right off the Punta Nizuc reef, is exclusive, private, and stunning. The snorkeling is some of the best in all of Mexico and will inspire the next generation of marine biologists. Winik’s Kids Club entertains with curated activities like easy cooking classes and piñata making, and there’s also a kids’ tennis clinic, where they can work on their skills alongside a professional coach.

Kids will love: paddling out to sea on a paddleboard or kayak. The ocean tide is calm and teeming with fish!

Canopy by Hilton Cancun La Isla

As much as we love the beach, staying at the oceanfront isn’t the only way to do Cancún. Across the street at the lagoon-facing Canopy by Hilton, guests have a variety of other exciting attractions at their doorstep, like an aquarium, wax museum, giant Ferris wheel, and Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, as well as plenty of shops and restaurants. Most exciting is the hotel’s kid-friendly rooftop pool, which features gorgeous views of the setting sun. The property is pet-friendly, too, meaning Fido can join in on the family fun.

Kids will love: the pirate experience located outside the hotel’s back entrance where they can float in gondolas down the waterways that run through La Isla while a group of scallywags puts on a show

The activities team does a great job keeping kids busy with activities like the foam party at the pool.

Beaches, Negril

As part of the Sandals family, Beaches Negril is a true family-friendly ultra-all-inclusive resort. Jamaica has two resorts, one in Ocho Rios and one in Negril. The property in Negril just underwent renovations on all their rooms and suites. The resort caters to all age groups with dedicated programs for infants, toddlers, and teens. There is a new 18,000 sq ft water park with lazy rivers, water slides including some for toddlers, a dining area, and more. Parents can enjoy the all-inclusive amenities, including premium drinks and gourmet dining at 11 restaurants.

As the only resort chain with a partnership with Sesame Street, your kids can meet some of their favorite characters during their stay. Parents with babies will love the infant program at no extra cost, and this is one of few resorts that offer childcare for infants under one year. The Kids Club program ranges from babies to teens.

Beaches Resorts provides terrific value for families who dive with all-inclusive diving at no extra cost! Beaches truly is for all and was the first resort company in the world to complete training with the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) and Autism Certification. Their kids’ programming includes options for families who have special needs.

Read all about the new luxury accommodations at Beaches Negril.

Bahia Principe Grand, Runaway Bay

Bahia Principe Grand is in Runaway Bay, between Ocho Rios and Montego Bay, and the highlight is the gorgeous sandy beach. It’s a large property with three pools facing the ocean and a new waterpark that the kids will love. We especially love that the areas around the pool are lit at night. The property features six restaurants, 11 bars, a kids club, and a spa. Take advantage of the complimentary kayaking, snorkeling, or catamaran rentals for 1 hour daily.

Moon Palace, Ocho Rios

Moon Palace Jamaica is a beachfront resort with scenic views along the shores of Ocho Rios. The resort’s all-inclusive package includes a dedicated kids’ club where older children can engage in supervised activities and children under four years old can participate with parental supervision. One feature that parents of infants will love is the baby menu, where parents can schedule freshly prepared pureed meals for their entire stay. Parents can save on the cost by booking during their kids/teen stay free offers. This resort also offers a 24-hour room service option.

Grand Palladium, Lucea

Grand Palladium is an indulgent escape located between Negril & Montego Bay. There are two hotels on the property, and guests have full access to both facilities, including all pools, beaches, restaurants, and bars. A highlight of this property is the private beaches and coves that give a sense of privacy and seclusion away from the busyness of the rest of the island. Though it’s a large resort, it’s still walkable, but if you prefer or need it due to mobility challenges, some golf carts can take you around the property.

Parents will love that this resort includes a baby club for kids ages 1-3, a mini club for ages 4-12, and a Junior club for teens. With one of the largest pools in Jamaica, a kids’ pool, and an adults-only pool, there is something for everyone.

Hotel Riu, Ocho Rios

Hotel Riu Ocho Rios is a large beachfront resort featuring 900 rooms, five pools, one children’s pool with slides, 11 restaurants and bars, and 24-hour service. The kids will love Splash Water World and the RiuLand Kids Club. The hotel is on a long white sand beach, with a section allocated only for guests.

Royalton Blue Waters, Montego Bay

Royalton Blue Waters, an Autograph Collection All-Inclusive Resort nestled on the stunning shores of Montego Bay, offers guests 228 suites, 7 bars, nine restaurants, pools, and a pirate-themed waterpark. This luxury resort with a boutique feel is excellent for families. The kids club is for children aged four and up.

Amenities include water sports, poolside cabanas, a lazy river, and more. The pirate-themed waterpark will surely be a hit with kids of all ages.

For families who want to avoid a long drive from their airport, this property is only 34 minutes from the Montego Bay airport.

Your kids will flip for the 126-square-foot indoor water park

Family vacations are often designed with the hope that our kids will not only have fun… but actually, remember the time spent together for years to come. Shared memories help bond families, which might be why Great Wolf Lodge (GWL) aptly markets itself as a place to  “Strengthen the Pack.” The newest Great Wolf Lodge resort in Perryville, MD  is not only the franchise’s largest, it’s now the closest resort to the DC metro area (just 90 minutes north of the city) and with over 50 adventure-packed activities all under one roof,  it’s also the perfect place to forge adrenaline-fueled, long-term memories with your own pack.

From challenging the kids to a lifesize, ride-on version of Hungry Hungry Hippo in the resort’s arcade to racing your family on the water-flume racetrack at Mountain Edge Raceway to simply gathering around a communal meal at Barnwood, the opportunities to spend quality time together are endless at this expansive new resort 75 miles from Washington, DC.

Get Soaked at the Indoor Waterpark

The first Great Wolf Lodge opened in 1997 in Wisconsin Dells, WI with a 20,000-square-foot water park, Today, Perryville, MD tops all 20 resorts nationwide with the largest indoor space—a whopping 126,000 square feet—filled with splash and spray pads, a wave pool, dump buckets, a lazy river, water cannons, and 22 epic slides. Did we mention the slides?

indoor water park at Great Wolf Lodge Perryville Maryland

From toddler slides to gentle twisting tubes to an exhilarating 4 story drop, there is a “just right” thrill for everyone. Enjoy the woosh of River Canyon Run (a family raft experience), pack in the most twists and turns on the longest twister slide in Maryland (a brand new attraction to all resorts!), or head to Coyote Canyon for a cortisol-spiking 40-foot-drop thrill ride! Step outside the 84-degree heated indoor space and there is more water-themed fun outside including a  wade-in pool and a “Hot Springs” hot tub.

Insider tip: Admission is included in your room rate, but you can also purchase day passes. Rates fluctuate between $40 for an off-season, mid-week half-day pass to $150 for a peak season, full-day pass.

Embark on the Ultimate Scavenger Hunt

While Great Wolf Lodge is best known for its water parks, it’s MagiQuest—the Harry Potter-like wand experience that weaves through Adventure Park and the Grand Lobby—that is one of the resort’s most stand-out experiences. Wand in hand, Magis are sent on an interactive scavenger hunt to find magic runes to help restore a mythical forest. Set the wand to Mini Magis mode and kids under 6 can activate the sparkling treasure chests and light up the tree-embedded icons without jumping through the game’s hoops. Complete the quest and your quest master will be knighted a Master Magi during the resort’s daily ceremony. If you don’t make Master Magi on your first visit, simply pack your wand for your next visit and start where you left off (with the purchase of new game time).

Insider tip: You can purchase this as a stand-alone attraction ($16.99/quest, $34.99/wand and quest bundle) or – if you are a resort guest—you can purchase a value-added Wolf Pass ($84.99)  that includes all the Adventure Park attractions (except gem mining).

Go to New Heights in Adventure Park

Elevate your family’s vacation at Howlers Peak Rope Course, a multi-level obstacle course suspended high above the resort’s miniature golf course. Get strapped into a safety harness and climb through rope bridges, hop from platform to platform and, if you dare to walk a narrow “plank” like a pirate, you will be rewarded by ringing a bell that lets everyone know you made it!

Once you have your feet on solid ground, there is plenty more to explore and do, including a 9-hole putt-putt course, an interactive mirror maze, miniature bowling (think shorter lanes and smaller balls), an action-packed arcade, and a gem mining station. If your child loves MagiQuest, the Magic Mirror Maze is a must. It takes a carnival mirror maze experience and turns it into a live-action game where your mini miner has to interact with the mirror to reveal the way out.

Insider tip: The bowling alley is first come, first served so be sure to grab your tokens when you arrive so you can pounce on an open lane.

Have Howling Good Fun in the Grand Lobby

You’ll find nothing but free fun in the Grand Lobby where daily activities include craft time, dance parties, yoga, character meet & greets with the pack from The Great Wolf Park Adventures, and a theatrical bedtime story featuring the Legend of Luna

There is a constant buzz of activities in the Grand Lobby; mornings kick off with kid-friendly yoga sessions followed by interactive storytimes, hands-on craft parties, and more.  Even when there isn’t an official event, there is plenty to do—like challenge your crew to an oversized game of  Connect Four—while you gather around the magic fireplace.

One of the most popular events is the character meet & greets, a thrice-daily photo opp for the whole family. Grab a pair of free wolf ears at the Buckhorn Exchange Gift Shop and get ready to get in character (pun intended) with the  stars of The Great Wolf Park Adventures (streamed daily in all resort rooms). Get a family picture with Violet Wolf, Wiley Wolf, Oliver Racoon, Brinley Bear, or Sammy Squirrel. Don’t forget to visit the Build-a-Bear Workshop (in the back corner of Buckhorn Exchange) to build and bring home your very own plush version of these beloved woodland animals.

A brand new experience has debuted at this Perryville resort and it’s a must for all Wolf Pack fans. The Legend of Luna, which tells the story of Violet as a young pup, is a multi-sensory, theatrical storytime that caps off each evening (there are two daily shows).  With a dramatic poof of smoke, the lobby’s magical fireplace comes to life with twinkling lights and special effects for the ultimate bedtime story.

Insider tip: If you’re going to spring for a Build-a-Bear, bundle and save with a Pup Pass ($59.99) that includes the Build-a-Bear experience, recommended for toddlers and young children, but we spied a few teens taking advantage of this perk!

Enjoy the Suite Life

Meghan Meyers

You don’t have to be a hotel guest to enjoy Great Wolf Lodge (the resort offers day passes), but with so many attractions under one roof, it’s nice to have a quiet place to take a break from the excitement. GWL makes it easy to travel with your entire pack (including the Grands) with suites that have accommodations for 6 to 13 people. All rooms include a refrigerator and a small dining area so you can enjoy your leftovers as a hearty post-pool snack  (there are public microwaves and ice machines on every floor).

Standard rooms are a great value, but if you have more than 6 people or just want to experience the rustic lodge-vibe in your own hotel room, book a themed suite that features either a cabin-themed or cave-themed interior design complete with bunk beds (always a hit with the kids!).

Insider tip: Every year Great Wolf Lodge offers an $84 roommate on Aug. 4 in honor of the resort’s anniversary. The crazy low price is a nod to the constant temp in the indoor waterpark; a steamy 84 degrees.

Satisfy Your Hunger Like a Wolf

GWL makes feeding a family easy (and budget-friendly). With so many quick service options, you don’t have to tear yourself away from the attractions for long;  grab a burger, sandwich, or a healthy salad at the American-style eatery Timbers or serve your ravenous pack a generously sized pizza pie at Hungry Like a Wolf.

If you want to take a break from the fast-paced adventures of GWL, book a reservation at the rustic, but elegant, Barnwood where your dining experience will make you forget you’re at a water park! Entrees include grilled salmon, steak, and free-range chicken. Other onsite options include Dunkin’, a  buffet-style breakfast at Campfire Kitchen, Wood’s End Creamery (get a free scoop with a Wolf, Paw or Pup pass!), and grab-and-go style meals from Freshwoods Market

Insider tip: Head to Freshwoods Market before the nighttime showing of the Legend of Luna for popcorn served in a souvenir cup.

Just a quick flight from the U.S. will get you to these resorts for some well-deserved family time

With its breathtaking cliffs, many nightlife offerings, and beautiful beaches, the Los Cabos area of Mexico is well known as a luxury vacation spot. But amazingly, it’s also the perfect spot for fun family getaways. Both kids and adults will enjoy water activities on the Sea of Cortez, taking in the area’s great location for whale watching, or off-roading in a four-wheeler. And when it’s time to head back to the hotel, staying at an all-inclusive resort can help control spending while keeping everyone occupied when onsite.

Some of Cabo has non-swimmable beaches so you’ll want to check that before you go if that’s high on your list. Here are some of the best all-inclusive resorts we found for families in Cabo.

Garza Blanca Resort & Spa Los Cabos

Separate spaces for guests of all ages define Garza Blanca Resort & Spa Los Cabos. Spacious rooms range from Junior Suites that sleep three to a two-story, 4-bedroom penthouse that accommodates up to ten. And all suites offer an ocean-view experience. Children can have time away from their parents at the onsite kid’s club that entertains little ones ages 4 to 12 with games and activities such as sandcastle building, movie time, and beach treasure hunts. Parents looking for a little ‘me time’ can explore the adult-only areas or head to the spa for a luxurious pampering session. The resort also features eight heated outdoor pools, a wide beach, multiple eating locations, an optional all-inclusive add-on option, and a family package allowing kids to eat and stay free.

Villa La Valencia Beach Resort

Home to the longest lazy river in Los Cabos, Villa La Valencia Beach Resort has plenty of opportunities for families to relax and get away, whether on the beach or in their rooms. Suites offer private terraces and living areas to help parents keep a routine if needed. At the same time, the onsite mini-mart and in-room refrigerators allow families with smaller children to enjoy meals on their schedules. Other times, everyone can get out and explore the multiple pools, four restaurants, and a lazy river. And remember that everyone needs time to themselves. The kid’s club allows children to create piñatas, take Spanish lessons, and enjoy yoga classes while, for an additional fee, parents can enjoy the couple’s experiences at the Azul Wellness Spa.

We’ve got a hot air balloon, zipline, and water park on this list

Orange County may be best known for Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, but there are plenty of other fabulous things to do with kids when you’re planning an OC outing. How about one of SoCal’s best water parks? Or a Mexican restaurant that gives you fab views of Disneyland’s nightly fireworks (without having to pay to go into the park)? Or maybe a giant helium balloon that can take your family 400 feet up in the air? Or perhaps playing with sharks at Discovery Cube’s brand new Discovery Sea Lab is more your jam? Whatever your pleasure, the OC has you covered from “fun to done—and all of it’s worth the car ride.

Littles will soak up every second of fun they can get, so slather on the sunblock and get ready to make the day of it. There are also three restaurants on-site to easily grab a bite when your brood gets hungry.

The space consists of The Traditional Ninja Warrior Course which models itself after the TV show with a series of skill-testing walls and obstacles, as well as a huge inflatable obstacle course. Calaca Mamas Cantina | Anaheim

If you want to end your day with a bang, Calaca Mamas Cantina near Disneyland has one thing that really stands out from other restaurants—fireworks, baby! Their outdoor patio has a prime view of the Disneyland fireworks, which means if you time it right, you can get all the sparkle of Disney’s famous nighttime show without the hefty theme park price tag.

Fans of Disney’s Coco will recognize the restaurant’s Día de los Muertos theme. The space is filled with vibrant Day of the Dead decor, including skeleton art, skull-shaped planters, and an ofrenda featuring photos of people who have passed (they’re reportedly relatives of the staff, but look closely and you’ll also spot Walt Disney). The bright colors and vibrant festivity will only add to your meal as your fam noshes on light and flaky chicken flautas or the signature “Taco in a Bag,” which blends all of the traditional taco ingredients and tosses them into a Fritos bag. Finish with homemade churros served inside a mini churro cart alongside a huge sparkler candle.

Insider Tip: If you’re lucky, you’ll be treated to an appearance by the restaurant’s balloon artist who can twist balloons into any creation. Free validated 2.5-hour parking is also available at the Best Western next door.

Old-school boardwalk fun rules the day at Balboa Fun Zone in Newport Beach. Ride the iconic Ferris Wheel – in operation since 1936—and enjoy arcade games, bike rentals, and even a nautical museum. Want to check out nearby Balboa Island? The kids will love taking the auto ferry from the fun zone across the water. Pedestrians, bikes, and cars are all welcome. And be sure to grab one of the island’s famous frozen bananas dipped in chocolate.

Another option for exploring the Balboa Marina is to rent a Duffy boat from Balboa Boat Rentals. These electric boats go a maximum of 5 mph and seat up to 12 people. You can drive them yourself or hire a driver. Many restaurants in the marina offer “dock and dine” service where you dock your Duffy boat and grab some eats to enjoy aboard or at the restaurant.

Hours: Open daily, Ferris Wheel open 11 a.m. – 9 p.m., and boardwalk rides are open 11 a.m. – 8 p.m.

The huge course has no big surprises and there are no fancy moving windmills or electric clown faces. This is straight-up traditional mini golf here, with tried-and-true challenges including raised holes, bridges over water, and mystery tunnels where your ball goes in one place and shuttles to another spot far below.

Adventure City | Anaheim

Want something a few steps (and dollars) down from a big theme park, but that gives enough thrills that pint-sized riders will be squealing with delight? Look no further than Adventure City. Spread out over two acres, this little amusement park has 11 rides and almost all of them are perfect for kids as young as 2. From a tiny Ferris wheel and “Crazy Bus” to a carousel and train ride, kids will feel like bona fide daredevils as they conquer each attraction. There are two small roller coasters that older siblings will appreciate (with a height requirement of 39″ and 36″), but all in all, we’d say the sweet spot for this place is ages 3 to 8. Tweens and teens will likely long for the bigger, faster rides of larger theme parks.

Kids of all ages will also love the petting zoo where they can feed sheep, chickens, goats, and pigs. And when you need a respite from the heat, head to the arcade to cool off and game for a spell.

Hours: Open daily in the summers; weekends throughout the year (hours vary)
Cost: $28.95 per ticket

Santa Ana Zoo

The LA Zoo is amazing, but from time to time, families might crave something a bit smaller. The Santa Ana Zoo is perfect for kids who want a taste of wildlife without the all-day commitment. With just 20 acres of easy paths meandering around a smattering of fun animal exhibits, plus a petting zoo, playground, and even a few amusement park rides—it’s a zoo that’s super easy to handle.

This zoo focuses on the animals of Central and South America, and its residents include anteaters, monkeys, llamas, and a variety of birds. There’s also a farm area where kids can interact with friendly critters and a butterfly exhibit that lets visitors walk through a habitat filled with butterflies from South Central and North America.

Did we mention rides? The 50 Monkey Ferris Wheel and Conservation Carousel are always a hit – as is the Zoofari Express Train Ride which provides narration about all the animals who call this zoo home.

Insider Tip: Pack a lunch and picnic (or buy from the cafe) next to the Safari Playground then let your kids work out their wiggles so they’ll snooze all the way home

Discovery Sea Lab at Discovery Cube | Santa Ana

In addition to all the wonderful, hands-on exhibits your family has grown to love at Discovery Cube, this one may be the coolest yet. They’ll also discover the amazing wonders of a tide pool community and learn how their diversity supports the entire planet.

Huntington Beach Central Park West Playground

Ropes course? Check! Zipline? Check! Totally free? Yep! This awesome playground located in Huntington Beach’s Central Park West between the Huntington Beach Disc Golf Course and Kathy May’s Lakeview Cafe opened last year and is worth the drive on the 405. With enough wow factor to impress kids who might balk at the idea of spending an hour in the car, this totally innovative playground has a towering ropes course that lets kiddos scamper high above the ground; then take flight on a zip line that soars across the play area – but, don’t fret – this part is low to the ground so littles can’t fall far.

The course here is designed like a “Floor is Lava” game where climbers have to get from one end of the playground to the other without touching the ground. Kids will dig it – though it’s best suited for ages 5 and up. For little ones, there’s a toddler playground next to the lake with a seesaw, baby swings, bench swings, and a small climbing structure with a slide.

Good to Know: Set your navigation to Kathy May’s Lakeview Cafe (6622 Lakeview Dr., Huntington Beach); its is the closest place to park near the playground
Insider Tip: Make it a staycation and book a room at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort and Spa where your kids will love the water slides, beachfront activities, nighttime s’mores, and mermaid swim lessons.
