Washington National Cathedral

The cathedral offers almost daily prayer, musical events, and services for your family. Many of their holiday events are simply magical, so be sure to check the calendar of events before you plan your visit. In addition, the cathedral provides accommodations for visitors with impaired hearing and limited mobility.

Insider Tip: Be sure to download the scavenger hunt guide, which includes fun facts about on-site history and art, before you head to the cathedral. Then, make a game of it and see if you can find each one. The Children's Chapel is a must-see, too. The space was designed with a 6-year-old in mind!

Lincoln Memorial

Many grandparents will remember Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech delivered from the steps of this incredible monument. Take the family car to Northern Virginia, and get ready to enjoy a hangar full of planes, rockets, and restoration projects on display for the whole family. Hop in a simulation to experience your flying adventure, or book a showing at the on-site IMAX theater.

When was the last time you and the kids played tourist in the Emerald City? If it’s been a while, now is a great time to reintroduce your family to the Seattle Waterfront. With the removal of the old viaduct and the promise of a new city park, the waterfront is looking better than ever. On a sunny day, you can’t beat it. And if we’re being honest, it’s just as fun (and maybe less crowded) on a rainy day. From the Great Wheel to Ye Olde Curiosity Shop, there’s a treasure trove of things to do for families of all ages. Just mix and match any of our favorite spots to plan the ultimate Seattle Waterfront outing.

What to Do on Land

For our guide, we found places that are within walking distance of each other along the Seattle Waterfront, but parents with toddlers know that’s not always a standard measure. Don’t sweat it; you don’t have to do it all in one trip. Pick one or two attractions that fit your family and you’ll have a great time without feeling pressured to “do it all.”

Swim with the Fishes
The Seattle Aquarium is home to all kinds of colorful tropical fish, shorebirds, jellyfish, otters and a giant Pacific Octopus that kids can’t seem to resist. Its newest residents include Casey, a harbor seal who is friends with two others, Barney and Hogan; and Chiidax, a male northern fur seal and is friends with Flaherty. (We are not making this up.) The most impressive exhibit here is the Underwater Dome, where you’re surrounded by all kinds of sea life. Other exhibits include the Family Activity Center and the ever-popular tide pool where kids are encouraged to reach in and touch sea urchins, anemones and other underwater wonders.

Become a Miner for the Day
Pier 57 is home to Miner’s Landing, a mini Disneyland, if you will. This is the home of the Seattle Great Wheel, Wings Over Washington, an indoor carousel featuring 30 hand-painted horses, shops and restaurants.

Take a Spin Over the City
Standing at 175 feet tall and reaching 40 feet over Elliott Bay, the Seattle Great Wheel is the largest Ferris wheel on the west coast. Each of the 42 climate-controlled gondolas can carry up to eight people, making for a perfect ride whether rain or shine. While on the ride, you will see views of Century Link Field, Mt. Rainier, T-Mobile Park, Pike Place Market and the Space Needle. At it’s just as spectacular at night when it is covered with over 500,000 LED lights making for a free walk by light show.

Take an Indoor Flight
Patterned after Disney’s Epcot’s “Soar’n” attraction, the Wings Over Washington “flying theater” will transport your whole family to locations all over the state. Your journey begins in a “ranger station” where you’ll get a short briefing on what to expect. From there, you’ll exit into a “forest” and climb into your theater seat, and you’ll be on your way experiencing the sights, sounds and even smells of the PNW as you “fly” over the Olympic National Forest, Mt. Rainier, San Juan Islands, the Tieton River, Husky Stadium and even become part of the Walla Walla Valley Balloon Stampede.

Become Curious
Located on Pier 54, the Ye Olde Curiosity Shop is a hybrid museum and gift shop that has been entertaining families since 1899. It prides itself of being home to the “weird, freaky and curious.” Among the tourist t-shirts and coffee mugs, you’ll find displays of shrunken heads, mummies, natural oddities, “taxidermy treasures” and an assortment of human-made wonders. You’ll see jewelry made from real insects, hand-blown ornaments, Northwest Native American hand-carved totem poles and a lot more.

Go to the Market
While not technically one of the Seattle Waterfront attractions, it’s hard to resist a trip to the Pike Place Market when you’re so close. A family could almost spend a whole day just at the Market! Hint: it’s also a great place to park. The market is filled with 500 or so small businesses, so there is a lot of ground to cover. The best places to take the fam? Watch the fish fly by at the fish stands, check out the comics at Golden Age Collectables, take a (quick) stroll through the Old Fashioned Candy Store, say hi to Billie the brass pig and be fascinated with the iconic gum wall. If you’re good, the kids might even let you stop at the original Starbucks.

Where to Go on the Sea

The water is pretty to look at, but it’s even better to experience. Hop aboard one of these ships for incredible views and memory-making.

Argosy Cruises
Argosy Cruises have been doing their thing for 70 years. Known as “Seattle’s Original Harbor Cruise,” Argosy offers one-hour long narrated cruises. “From the skyline to the shipping port, there’s views and history everyone will enjoy,” they say. Each cruise offers a live narration about Seattle’s present and mini history lessons about its past while taking in the panoramic views of the Olympic Mountains and Puget Sound. A full-service bar is on board with cocktails, wine, beer, non-alcoholic beverages and snacks.

Salish Sea Tours
Salish Sea Tours offers hour-long catamaran tours of Elliott Bay with an audio tour of Seattle and the surrounding areas. Two full-service bars are on board as well offering beer, wine, non-alcoholic beverages, salmon meals, sandwiches and snacks.

Seattle’s Tall Ship
For a change of pace, check out Seattle’s Tall Ship, a classic schooner departing from Pier 66 Bell Harbor Marina. The 85-foot traditional gaff-rigged schooner is a family-friendly ship. Yes, the twin-masted ship offers a similar tour with fantastic views, but this ride is wind-powered and is two hours long. It too offers and drink and snack bar and plenty of outdoor seating.

Bainbridge Island Ferry
For a simpler (not to mention cheaper) tour option, take a Bainbridge Island Ferry ride. Just walk on the 400-foot-long boat for a 35-minute ride to Bainbridge Island. Who knows, you just might see an orca. The best part? You’ll only pay a fare going to the island; it’s free on the way back.

Seattle Waterfront Restaurants

With all of that walking around and exploring, you’ll need some time to refuel. Along the waterfront, you’ll find a number of restaurants options that might fit the bill, but if you’re wanting to complete your day with an experience, check these out.

Ivar’s Acres of Clams
Ivar’s has been a Seattle institution since 1938. Ivar’s Acres of Clams is known for their “world famous” clam chowder, grilled wild salmon and true cod fish ‘n chips. The menu also includes deep-water halibut, Alaska King crab, Dungeness crab, jumbo prawns, Manila clams and weathervane scallops. The kids menu is pretty extensive with kid-sized portions of the classics plus butter noodles (with or without chicken), cheeseburgers, grilled cheese sandwich and more to chomp on. Got a picky eater? How about a fruit cup? Done!

Ivar’s Pier 54 Fish Bar
However, if the weather is cooperating, you might want to take the clan to Ivar’s Pier 54 Fish Bar right next door to the Acres of Clams. They serve up many favorites including cod, halibut and salmon fish ‘n chips, clams, prawns, oysters, scallops and even chicken. Enjoy white or red clam chowder or Alaska smoked salmon chowder in a cup or bread bowl or grab a side of French fries, cole slaw and shrimp cocktail and mix it up.

The Crab Pot
Here, you actually encouraged to play with your food. Sort of. The Crab Pot is a casual restaurant’s specialty is the Seafeast where buckets of steamed seafood is dumped directly on the table and your family can have at it. Four feasts are offered, but the most popular is The Alaskan which consists of king crab, snow crab, Dungeness crab, clams, shrimp, mussels, andouille sausage, red potatoes and corn on the cob. If that is not your thing, they also offer more traditional items including grilled seafood, barbecue ribs, chicken and vegetables, burgers and sandwiches.

The Fishermen’s Restaurant and Bar
Located right next to the Seattle Great Wheel, Fishermen’s Restaurant and Bar features indoor dining as well as a large patio to take in the views or just watch the Wheel go round and round. Dishes here include fresh-shucked local oysters, coconut prawns, local crab and smoked salmon.

Ahhhh….summer.  It sounds amazing.

Lots of time outside; the kids all splashing happily in whatever water-filled container you have.

Lots of unscheduled time, with no particular places to be or things to do.

Your kids get to just be kids for a while.

But here’s what’s also part of summer:

The crying and whining.

The endless repetitions of “I’m booooooored…” interspersed with refusals to help around the house.

And your triggered feelings.

What Happens When You Have a Big Reaction to Your Kid’s Feelings

When your kids don’t cooperate (which happens a lot when you’re together a lot), you probably go into one of four ‘modes’:

1. Fight Mode: You get combative! Your child might as well be an attacking bear that you’re fighting for your life. You will dominate them…through words (you can probably out-logic them), through your physical presence (towering over them) and/or through swatting or spanking them.

2. Flight Mode: You’ve got to get out of here! Your child might as well be an attacking bear that you’re running away from, and quickly. You check out mentally, or you physically leave the room—and when your child follows you it makes everything ten times worse.

3. Freeze Mode: The bear’s attacking, and you can’t figure out what to do. You’re mentally and physically frozen: should you counterattack? Should you run and hide? It is simply not possible for you to make a decision—about anything—at this moment.

4. Fawn Mode: Most common among people who have experienced abuse, this involves getting the difficult behavior to stop at all costs. You placate the child; reassure them; say they can have the thing they want…anything to make the crying/screaming/whining stop.

It doesn’t seem like any of these things should be part of any parent’s summer plans…and yet, here they are.

Summer isn’t over yet.

Are you gonna make it?

Here are 5 tips to help you not just survive but actually enjoy the time you’re spending with your kids this summer:

1. Don’t Multitask.
Whenever your attention is split, there’s a good chance you’re going to get frustrated. Have designated times to play with your kids—and put the phone away. Focus on nothing but being with them. At other times, tell them you’re not available now but you will be in 30 minutes/after lunch/when the timer goes off.

2. Slow Down & Simplify.
Do you need to go to every birthday party? Must you take something homemade to every gathering, or would a bowl of cherries be just as welcome?  Could you eat take-out one more night a week, or cook twice as much on the nights you do cook, and eat leftovers every other night? Can you plan just a little further ahead so you don’t have to go shopping as often? The more you can slow down and simplify, the less overall stress you’ll feel, which will leave more gas in the tank to deal with the children’s meltdowns.

3. Be Realistic about What Your Child Can Do. 
We hear a lot about having ‘developmentally appropriate’ expectations, but many parents expect their children to be able to do way more than they really can.  A survey by respected organization Zero to Three found that over half of parents think that children under three can reliably resist the desire to do something forbidden when actually this starts to develop between ages 3.5-4. And 42% of parents think that children should be able to control their emotions—like not having a tantrum when they’re frustrated—by age 2 when again this develops between the ages of 3.4-4. If you’re expecting too much too soon, you’ll get frustrated when they can’t meet your expectations.

4. Embrace the Drop-off (Outdoor) Playdate.
If you have any access to the outdoors, and there are other families in your ‘pod,’ take turns hosting outdoor playdates. If you have a garden, the other child could bring a lunch and then you just turf them outdoors for the day—they can collect rocks, make ‘houses’ for imaginary friends; build things out of cardboard…Even traditionally indoor-based toys like LEGO and Magnatiles that they’re bored with using indoors can be fun again outdoors. Chances are having another child around will actually keep yours occupied for longer…and then your child goes to the friend’s house another time, giving you several hours off. Even if you go to the playground or park instead of your house, you could work for the life of your laptop battery, or hang out with a book. Win-win!

5. Pay Attention to What’s Going on in Your Body.  
In our culture, we have an idea that everything worth paying attention to happens in our brains. But very often our bodies tell us when something’s up—like when we’re getting resentful because our child has been asking us to do things for them all day. We might feel a tightness in our shoulders, heat across our chest, nausea, or a headache long before we yell at our child, walk away from them, freeze, or fawn. We can learn to pay attention to these signals and act on them early in the day rather than letting the frustration build until we explode.

Navigating kids’ big feelings is challenging for every parent. It can be doubly challenging when you can’t stay calm in these moments, perhaps partly because you are remembering difficult events from your childhood. But just because you’ve responded with frustration up to now doesn’t mean it always has to be that way. You might think that your child needs to change their behavior but none of the ideas here involve doing that. When you change the way you show up with them, they most likely won’t do as much of the behavior you find so difficult.

And so you will make it through the summer.

When they’re babies you do everything for them, but that stage doesn’t last forever. Before you know it, your toddler is shouting, “I do it self!” Raising independent kids who can accept personal responsibility means future adults that do the same. But how do we manage our expectations of our kids in an age-appropriate way and balance that with our instincts to make sure everything is okay? Here are five parent-friendly tips for helping teach kids independence.  

1. Make Expectations Clear (and Visual!)

Whether your child is four or fourteen, a visual reminder of daily routines and schedules will work as a prompt. With younger kids, rewards are frequently part of establishing a routine but even as kids get older, a to-do list will give them a sense of control. Whether it’s a simple whiteboard with weekly tasks or a rainbow sticker covered chore chart, find something that fits your family and your child’s personality. 

2. Keep Supplies Handy

Help kids help themselves by making sure the things they need to achieve their tasks are within easy reach. Put healthy snacks in a bin in the pantry they can reach themselves when they are hungry. Make sure things like toothpaste, face wash, washcloths, contact lens solution and hairbrushes are all somewhere easy to grab (and replenish) when they need it. 

3. Make It Achievable & Age-Appropriate

Giving a toddler a basket of laundry to fold is not going to help anyone (although it does keep them occupied for a while!). So, make sure your child’s daily to-dos are age-appropriate. By asking them to do things that are manageable, they will quickly gain a sense of accomplishment and independence. 

For example, children who are 5 or 6 can do things like get the mail, feed the pets and set the table. Most kids after age 3 or 4 can perform basic hygiene rituals, like brushing their teeth and washing their face, without the aid of a grown-up. 

If your child starts to wear contact lenses they can learn to both insert and remove the lenses themselves. This may seem tricky at first because they are literally putting something in their eye, but with practice, they’ll have the hang of it in no time, and they’ll be proud of themselves to boot! In fact, 9 of 10 children as young as 8 years old are able to insert and remove their lenses on their own.¹  If your age-appropriate child wears contact lenses, make it easier on your kids by giving them daily-wear lenses, like MiSight® 1 day soft contact lenses, that can be used just once and then disposed of, saving them the additional steps of cleaning and soaking the lenses. 

4. Be Patient

We’ve all been in that situation where you’re running late and it takes about ten million minutes for your kid to tie their shoe. While your instinct is to just do it for them and get going, try to build your daily schedule with time to allow them to do these things themself. If you know they take extra time to tie their shoes, wake them up 10 minutes early, or better yet tell them it’s 10 minutes later than it really is. Whether it's contact lenses, remembering their lunch or clearing their plate, gentle reminders are different than taking over. Parents and caregivers are human, and we’re not going to be patient all the time, but the more you allow your child to take care of things themself, the more independent and confident they will become.

5. Let the Small Stuff Go 

From mismatched outfits to messy hair to the crooked little way they made their bed, try to think of the bigger picture before you take over. If every time your kid makes their bed you send the signal that they didn’t do a good enough job, they will feel like they can’t do it. If instead, every time they make their bed, no matter how wrinkly or crooked, you can look at it with gratitude that you didn’t have to do it for them, they will feel like they are doing it right. 

As parents, the more we can embrace the imperfections and not let the many, many, messy moments bother us, the more our children will gain independence. And if you need it to be neater, do it when they aren’t looking.

All aboard! History

In 1864, the railroad was built in order to take visitors arriving from San Francisco up to a resort in Calistoga. The Napa Wine train’s inaugural journey began in 1989 and has been a staple in Napa ever since with the railroad and train playing an integral part to Napa’s growth and development. 

Scenery

The 36 mile round trip journey to St. Helena starts at the Napa train station and showcases exquisite wine country scenery (and the famous Napa sign!) as it rambles idyllically along Hwy 29 past 100+ vineyards. Of all the ways to enjoy Napa scenery with your family, the Napa Wine train really lets you sit back and relax… all without a designated driver.

The Experience

Check-in starts at the train station where a wine store, lounge and restrooms await. Boarding is by groups and done so via the Locks of Love Bridge, where a token of your love can be left with the collection. A professional photo is taken before boarding of which the digital copy is complimentary with physical copies available for purchase following the tour. 

Stepping into the train car truly feels like time travel with rich mahogany panels coupled with tasteful brass accents engulfing the car. A champagne (or cider) toast sets the right tone and as the train pulls away, attentive staff offer four types of tea: Yunan black, earl grey, chamomile and rooibos. 

First, a carrot ginger soup (quite possibly our favorite part of the meal—next to dessert, of course) was served followed by a beet salad. Finger sandwiches followed with the lobster vul-au-vent (fancy speak for a pastry shell filled with lobster) and radish and creme fraiche being favorites. 

Cheese and grapes, macarons, bon-bons (how could there not be bon-bons on a train?) and other sweet treats finished the tea service by which time we were bursting at the seams. We also loved that periodically during the trip, narratives and insight is given by the staff regarding the history of certain wineries and interesting facts and tidbits we otherwise wouldn’t have known. This made it seem like a fun history lesson set in an actual piece of living history! 

Good to know: 

  • While the afternoon tea service is for the 10 and up crowd, other tours and experiences are available with no minimum age. Seeing as two or three hours is a long time for anyone to sit still, parents of the younger set might want to bring some form of entertainment  
  • Diaper changing is not permitted on board and children aren’t allowed to wander the cars 
  • The Afternoon Tea service menu is not modifiable but we were told other tours can change their menus with advanced notice 
  • The two types of seating are booths and plush armchairs and we recommend a booth because eating in an armchair seems like a recipe for spilling with kids  
  • Tickets range from $245-$295/person which makes it great for a special occasion celebration

Starting daycare is a daunting experience for any parent. When you add in the issue of food allergies the high anxiety experience can leave you worried for your child’s life. But for some of us, daycare is the only option we have. To get through it safely, here are a few tips for dealing with daycare and food allergies.

To deal with daycare and food allergies the best way to start is to take control of what you can. Get involved with food prep and give detailed instructions to those who you fear may not have food allergy training. Bring reminders and have paperwork for everyone involved, so you’re all literally on the same page.

Food Allergies in Daycares

Chances are your daycare will have at least one child that has food allergies already attending. Since 8% of children in the US have food allergies, about 1 in 13 children or 2 students per classroom are dealing with allergies.

Despite this growing number, you may find some schools are less prepared than others to deal with food allergies. Because food allergy education and training is different everywhere, you will have to be vocal about your safety concerns.

Get an idea of how prepared the school is during the first walkthrough or orientation. Explain how severe your child’s allergy is and ask if there are other children with food allergies.

Take a look at where the children eat and how food is handled. Be sure they understand that food allergy safety also means avoiding cross-contamination. Will children be eating allergenic foods and immediately playing with toys?

Ask every question you think of there’s no room for misunderstandings.

Food Allergies & How to Deal With Them in a Childcare Setting

To deal with food allergies in a childcare setting, all teachers and parents should be notified of a child with food allergies in a class. This means everyone knows, so no one from another class comes in and makes a mistake.

Parents share a lot of information from the start. To help with communication be ready with as much food allergy information as you can.

  • Having a doctor’s note always helps people understand the seriousness of the situation (if you’re dealing with a daycare that doesn’t understand, find another one).

  • Leave detailed instructions for the epi-pen.

  • Use food allergy cards and stickers as reminders.

  • Write out substitutes for allergies on the school’s menus so the daycare has options.

  • Have an emergency care plan.

  • Teach your child to be vocal about their food allergies.

This is no time for your child to be called picky—allow your little one to voice their opinion. Let the school know you taught your toddler about food allergies and let them question if a food is safe.

In some cases, the school may not have access to simple substitutes like soy milk for dairy. So you’ll take on the role of providing school lunch earlier than expected.

Learn to Meal Prep

With the hefty price tag of daycare, bringing your own lunch can be a problem, but with a few meal prep ideas, you can keep the cost down. The benefit of making your own lunch is you know what your child is eating each day.

Create meals for the week and take them to the school on Monday. No need to lug milk every day if the school has a full kitchen. Drop off the soymilk on Monday and have the daycare inform you when it’s all out.

This gives the providers the chance to serve the toddlers lunch with the other children. Labeling and prepping is a lot of work, but for some doing it once a week versus every day may help.

Of course, this option will require a lot of communication. This plan depends on the daycare’s st‌yle and how comfortable you are with the ability to avoid cross-contamination.

Take Advantage of Bento Boxes

Make lunch with your toddler’s favorite foods in a bento box. Add crackers, lunch meat, fruit, veggies, and their favorite dip. A bento box doesn’t have to mean big expensive lunches your toddler doesn’t want. Keep it simple and change up the ingredients and it’ll always be fresh.

Sometimes it’s best to choose options that don’t have to be heated so handling is kept to a minimum. However, when you want add a sandwich or dinner the day before and use your regular fruits and veggies as sides.

Skip Breakfast (If You Can)

My boys are allergic to eggs. I’m lucky enough to work from home, so when eggs are for breakfast at daycare, I drop them off a little later. They skip breakfasts they can’t eat at school and have breakfast at home.

If that’s not an option pack up breakfast on the go and always remind the daycare they already ate or they have their own.

When it comes to lunch, give in to your child’s demands. No point in creating beautiful nutritious meals they don’t want. If they want seed butter and jelly three days in a row, don’t feel bad for giving it to them. You still have dinnertime at home to fill the gaps.

While these tips may not get rid of all your fear, being prepared can help put your mind at ease. Making notes on the weekly or monthly menu will keep everyone stay up to date at every meal. Using eye-catching stickers and food allergy cards on bookbags and cubbies is a fun way to use reminders.

When substitutes aren’t an option, bring your own lunch. Meal prepping with bento boxes and skipping breakfast at school can keep costs low. Choose your child’s favorites to ensure they eat every bite.

Starting daycare is hard, but you can get through it, even with food allergies. Once you witness the fun your child has making friends and bringing home artwork, you’ll see why it’s worth it
