Seattle

For a more active vacation, head to our neighbors to the north to take in some culture. If you haven’t been to Seattle lately (or ever), do the tourist thing and hit up Pike Place Market and Seattle Center with the Space Needle and MoPOP. If that’s old hat to you, explore the Old Ballard neighborhood from the comfort of the Hotel Ballard. While you're there, don’t miss out on the Mexican food at La Carta de Oaxaca, and get the molé.

Mt. Rainer

Just a three hour drive away, Mt. Rainier offers parents-to-be opportunities to take in the beauty of winter, and engage in winter activities that are easy on the expecting. The mountain offers spectacular views that you won’t find anywhere else, and if you leave your cozy cabin you are sure to run into wildlife including dear and elk. If mom is up for it, ranger guided snow shoe walks are available inside Mt. Rainer National Park. If you are looking for something a little more gentle and relaxing, a ride on the Mt. Rainier Gondola will take you over 2,400 vertical feet to the summit where you will find expansive views of Mt. Rainier and the beautiful Cascade Range. While you are there, you'll want to grab a bite at the Summit House, Washington’s highest elevation restaurant serving locally sourced and Northwest inspired cuisine. For a romantic base camp, stay at one of Three Bears Lodge  seven cabins just outside the year-round Paradise entrance to the national park in Ashford. Columbia Gorge

The Columbia Gorge is perfect for a babymoon because it's gorgeous year round and because of its close proximity to your Portland birthing center. Portlanders usually make this a day trip, but a longer stay will allow you and your sweetie to really relax and take in the natural splendor. Skamania Lodge has long been a favorite of Portlanders, as it’s only 45 minutes away from town, but has both a lovely natural setting and plenty of things to do. You may not feel up to ziplining this time around, but there are plenty of other things to do: a ride on the Sternwheeler, a photography tour, local waterfalls, or a mani/pedi at the spa. Or, get in a bucket at the driving range, or leave that up to your partner to tackle while you're getting those toes you haven't seen in awhile fancied up.

Mt. Hood

Head to the mountain and book your babymoon stay at the Timberline Lodge. Timberline Lodge is an iconic spot that features a year-round outdoor heated pool that mom-to-be will love floating in. It also has a hot tub and sauna and luxurious rooms to relax in. If mom is up for it, it's a great basecamp for  a short snowshoeing adventure. You can rent snow shoes right there, go on a trek and then come back to the lodge to warm up and enjoy the game room or a light read from the lending library. There are multiple onsite dining options including the Cascade Dining Room and Rams Head Bar & Restaurant. You can stay for days without leaving the lodge, except for gentle treks in the snow.

Bend

Old Mill District via Yelp

Choose your adventure: Stay outside of town at a vacation rental to enjoy the high desert air and mountain views, or stay in town to check out arts, food, and entertainment. The High Desert Museum, just south of town, doesn't just have historical exhibits, but also houses native animals like a bobcat, lizards, and birds of prey. In town, you’ll also find a few spas that offer prenatal massage, like the Jinsei Spa, which also offers couples’ massage if you’re so inclined. Dads-to-be get stressed, too! Stay at the Oxford Hotel in downtown Bend. Not only are the rooms extra luxurious, amazing restaurants and shops are all in walking distance (even for tired, pregnant feet). And if you are too tired to make you way out for dinner, the Oxford has a stunning restaurant called Roam that offers delectable dishes on site.

This gorgeous road trip will make you feel like you're a world away with the old-fashioned storefronts, lots of shopping and the stunning beauty of the surrounding area. For the most relaxing and romantic stay, book a room at Five Pines Lodge. You can stay at the grand lodge which is a blend of modern and rustic architecture and features a 30-foot rock fireplace, or in one of the cozy cabins located amidst a sprawling pine forest. While shopping is just steps away, mom might prefer to indulge Five Pine's Shibui Spa offerings or take in a flick at Sisters Movie House which is also located on the Five Pine Campus. Newport

While Cannon Beach trades in tourism, art and postcard-perfect views of Haystack Rock, Newport has a bit more hustle and bustle, with its touristy Mariner Square (with Ripley’s Believe it or Not, Waxworks, and Oregon Undersea Gardens), busy Bayfront district serving the busiest fishing harbor in the state, lighthouses, and the Oregon Coast Aquarium. If you’re feeling up to crabbing or boating (those of you with stable stomachs and solid balance), the Embarcadero Resort has a marina, private crabbing dock and crab pot rentals. If you’d prefer to take it easy, enjoy the harbor view and floating in the resort's salt water pool. Make the Embarcadero Resort your basecamp for your getaway. Portland Activities: 7 Easy Day Trips From Portland

Whether it’s a mandatory quarantine or the common cold, being home with sick kiddos is never easy. And if you’re not feeling very energetic yourself, it can be extra tough. So we’ve rounded up some simple activities that don’t take a ton of energy or effort from anyone. Check them out below.

“Fort”-ify Down Time
Build your mini-me a special place where they can curl up with furry friends, pillows, and their favorite blankie so they can rest or take a quiet nap. Load it with lots of love and climb in for some snuggle time too, if your sidekick needs a little company. Soft and comforting is the key, so kidlets will power down with ease. Check out these inspired designs before you start building.

Pamper Your Petite
Plan a Sick Day Spa Session for your sidekick. But instead of the usual mani/pedi plus oatmeal mask combo, go for soothing activities and potent scents that help with stuffy noses and minor aches. A warm bath or hot shower is a good place to start. If you’ve got it, put in bubbles or drop in peppermint or lavender essential oils to soothe your sick kiddo. And if you’ve got a lavender mask or scented buckwheat pillow that can be gently warmed in the microwave, put them to good use. If not, grab your closest bottle of peppermint lotion and rub some on little hands and feet for a faux mani/pedi effect that’s oh-so relaxing.

Party Like a Librarian
…very quietly, when you host a reading party for kiddos dealing with the crud. There’s nothing better than snuggling up with stuffies, blankies and the best book ever when you don’t feel well. Whether your mini-me cuddles up in bed or camps out on the couch, spend as much time as you can spare reading the day away. This is one easy activity that keeps them quiet and still, so they can get the rest they need to recover.

Soothe Your Sick Sidekick
DIY playdough is always an easy option for quiet, low-key play. But if your kiddo is under the weather, adding drops of lemon or eucalyptus essential oil gives play dough a wellness boost your wee one needs. Whip up a batch, then let your little patient mold, roll, and cut out shapes galore. The lovely scents will soothe noses and hopefully keep the sniffles at bay, too.

Spy Some Relief
Break out those miscellaneous trinkets and baubles your kiddo collects from birthday parties and holidays. Then put them to good use when winter colds settle in at your place by making an iSpy jar. Play this quiet activity alongside your bundled-up buddy by having them call out what they find, or checking items off on a homemade checklist. Easy-peasy play!

Sort It Out
Winter colds and crummy fevers are especially hard for the tot lot. But give them this quiet activity and they’ll forget just how icky they feel. Use colored pasta to set up a simple sorting game they can play perched in bed, from the comforts of a cozy blanket fort, or at the kitchen table so you can be close by. Once you’ve colored the pasta, set out bowls and have your cutie sort their rainbow pile into each, by color. When they’re done, they can easily string some of their favorites into a necklace or bracelet to wear!

Stick To It
Setting your kidlet up at the craft table to start in on easy projects keeps her restful without being bored. From duct tape beads to washi tape dominoes, here are seven easy tape-based projects your sidekick can embark on. Psst… most of these are just as easy to do from the comfort of the couch or bed as they are at the crafting table.

Serve Up Tea for Two
Tea parties are another simple activity that kids always seem to enjoy. But when they’re sick, it’s also an easy opportunity to soothe a sore throat or combat the chills with some mildly hot tea. Let your kiddo invite “guests” (think: action figures, stuffed animals or dolls) to your get-well tea party. Then brew up a pot of lemon ginger or Moroccan mint tea to serve at the event. Adding in a bit of honey sweetens the deal and helps the healing too. Party on!

Deal Them In
Tuck your little one into bed and then grab a deck of cards to play simple kid-friendly games like Go Fish, Crazy 8’s, Old Maid or War. Who needs the comforts of chicken noodle soup on a sick day when can you score serious points and plenty of much-needed rest at the same time with these card games!

Doctor, Heal Thyself
Turn the tables on your patient when you let them play doctor. Break out the pretend medical kit, or if you don’t have one, choose real-life wellness props like thermometers and bandages, then let them be the ones in charge of making you well again. Taking your temperature, listening to your heartbeat and bandaging up your boo-boos should be part of the routine. Psst… this is an especially helpful activity if your kiddo’s wary of having their temp taken when they’re not feeling well. Once they see you do, they’ll feel so much better!

boulderlocavore-popsicles

photo: Boulder Locavore

Freeze the Moment
When they’re sick, your kiddo wants something sweet to soothe their sore throat. So why not make your own fruity popsicles that they can enjoy? Each one of these 15 recipes is bursting with real fruit goodness and loads of vitamin C to boost their immune system and get your wee one well…sooner. Bring on the vitamins!

Cut It Out
Have paper, will feel better. After lots of rest and craft time, that is. Choose any of these 30 paper crafts for your cutie to make while they’re taking a sick day. From designer paper houses to flashy funky glasses, these no-fuss options will give your cutie something to focus on and let their body rest.

Push the Right Buttons
All you need is a bucket of spare buttons to keep your wee one occupied when a winter cold or fever has zapped their energy. From making button bookmarks to hold the place in your favorite story, to playing Who’s Got the Button with mom or dad, any of these five activities should do the trick!

Draw It Out
Drawing a picture is always good fun, but it can be even more fun if you make a game out of it. Each person participating starts their drawing and a timer for however long you’d like. After the timer is up, pass your picture to the next person and add it to each other’s art! This is a great way to create some fun art and some giggles.

The Bump. Babylist. MyRegistry.com. Baby registries are the ultimate checklist to ensure new moms have all the necessities (and then some) to care for their newborn. Sure, they make it super easy for loved ones to buy baby gifts, but if you’ve ever had a baby yourself, you know firsthand how little material things you truly need with an infant. Sure, you need a changing pad and copious amounts of diapers and wipes, but how many onesies does one baby really need? Once you’ve got the big-ticket items secured, like your car seat and stroller, the greatest thing that someone needs is help!

Now I don’t know of any baby registries that list help or more accurately, haaaalp!, as an option and it’s really, really hard for most new moms to ask for it. When you’re in that foggy postpartum delirium it’s nearly impossible to articulate what you really need even when your household is falling apart. So if you’ve got a friend who is expecting, here are a few ways to ‘think outside the registry box’ and shower her in a really impactful way.

  • Hire a housecleaner. Give your friend the gift of a sparkling clean house complete with a polish and shine. She is going to be consumed with keeping her tiny human alive and trying to ‘nap when her baby naps’, meanwhile her kitchen and bathroom have become no man’s land. Find someone trusted in her neighborhood and schedule it a few weeks after her due date. She will be forever grateful.

  • Pay for a dog walking service. Does your friend have a fur baby? Most doggies take the back seat once the new baby arrives and I’m not talking about car rides. Find a friendly dog walking service and schedule a few visits for their pup to be loved on, walked, and played with. Both parties will be soooo happy.

  • Pay for a laundry service. Could you imagine someone else doing your laundry for a few weeks? #laundrygoals. Babies produce an insane amount of laundry considering their clothes are one-tenth the size of ours and when you include burp cloths and clothes with milk stains, we’ve got a problem Houston. No one wants their dear friend doing their laundry. Pay a stranger and stay anonymously messy.

  • Buy a three-month membership for a fitness app. Find one that has some postnatal yoga or pilates and give the gift of movement. This is especially perfect if your friend is having a winter baby. It’s nearly impossible to make it to the gym with a newborn even if you had the energy. Having some exercise options at her fingertips would be a beautiful, low-commitment option to get her happiness endorphins flowing again.

  • Now for the fun one. Give your GF a mani/pedi gift card to a nearby salon! This way she can feel like a queen again and have her nails be on point for those precious newborn pics.

There’s No Place Like Home! 12 San Diego Staycations for Families

6 Hair Salons Where Kids Can Get a New ‘Do, Chop, Chop!

5 Urban Playdates & Lunch Dates With Your Preschooler

Family vacations are one of those things you’ll never regret, but finding an affordable getaway that promises adventure, sandy beaches and culture all in one? It’s not impossible and you don’t even need a passport: we recently escaped to St. Petersburg, Florida (or St. Pete, as the locals know it) and we’re here to tell you that you can achieve your family vacation goals this year. Read on for eight very good reasons St. Pete should be your next trip.

1. The Beach

Amber Guetebier

The perfect formula for a family vacation is to find at least one thing that makes each person happy. Or you can go to the beach (which makes everyone happy at once). St. Pete Beach is one of the most beautiful and accessible beaches in Florida (home to many gorgeous beaches!). Located on the Gulf of Mexico side (just a short ride away from the heart of St. Petersburg), the kids can scoop and splash all day, you can chill in a cabana (bring along that novel! We packed two!) or go paddle boarding and parasailing, all without having to so much as hop in the car. There’s truly something for everyone.

2. The Accommodations

Sirata Beach Resort

St. Pete Beach has no shortage of beach-front or just-off-the-beach properties, from budget motels to grandiose palaces. Where you stay can make or break a family vaycay, but don’t get overwhelmed: just book a room at the Sirata Beach Resort. We stayed here on our recent trip and it gets a thumbs up recommendation from our family and all the families we met. Not only is it affordable (rooms start at just $159 a night) it’s right on the beach and extremely family-friendly. They just completed a renovation in January of 2019 and parents will find the rooms spacious and comfy, many with kitchenettes and awesome views of the Gulf of Mexico.

Amber Guetebier

You will also find onsite: two heated pools, three restaurants (that range from sand-in-the-feet casual to fine dining) a jacuzzi, cabanas on the beach with drink + menu service and, of course, a wide expanse of white sand beach. This is one of the only properties along this stretch that actually owns a big piece of the beach and that means you have first-dibs on some of the finest scooping, chilling and splashing around. They even have a book library so you can fulfill that dream of reading in a hammock. Book online at sirata.com

Good to know: Rooms offer the option for you to log in with your own Amazon Prime or Netlfix account (all info is deleted upon check out) so the kids can watch exactly what they want when you’re winding down in the evenings.

3. The Range of Kid-Friendly Options

Sirata Beach Resort

Should you find you’d like to venture off the beach, you won’t have to go far to please the crew. The Sirata Beach Resort has a Sprouts Kid’s Club game where you can all play together and an Extreme Gaming room featuring an Xbox-One. There are also daily crafts for kids! You’ll find a the newly designed Sprouts Splash Zone play area with a nice, high fence and chairs for parents to lounge.

Sirata Beach Resort

Even the design of the hotel is fun for the kids: rooms offer either a beach view or a city view, there’s tons of art and hideaways to explore (they will love the poolside hanging chair garden.) You'll even find a playground right on the beach. Parents and older kids will appreciate volleyball, beach yoga and live music.

Don’t miss: The resort has bikes available for your use to explore Pass-a-Grille Beach or elsewhere. You can also arrange a boat excursion, dolphin cruise or parasailing tour with Suncoast Watersports from a kiosk located on the beach almost directly in front of the Rum Runners Bar & Grille. They say kids as young as three and kids-at-heart as old as 81 have embarked on parasailing adventures with them!

Good to know: The resort is also 100% pet-friendly!

4. Downtown St. Pete Arts District

Amber Guetebier

On the grounds of the resort you’ll find two murals painted by local artist Derek Donnelly. If you like what you see then you must explore downtown St. Pete. Book a walking tour to see the amazing array of murals sure to wow the kids or just explore on foot. Saunter along Central Avenue North to shop artisan wares and dine on local gourmet treats before exploring even more art: you’ll find the Morean Arts Center which offers daily glass blowing demos, their Chihuly Collection which is right across the street, and Florida CraftArt —all less than five minutes from each other.

Don’t Miss: If you find yourself there on a weekend, head all the way down Central Avenue North to the waterfront to hit up the local St. Petersburg Saturday Market.

5. The Salvador Dali Museum

Amber Guetebier

You can’t really have too much exposure to awesome art, right? Don’t visit St. Pete without bringing the kids to the whimsical, wonderful Salvador Dali Museum. From the sculpture garden to the main galleries, just the design of the museum itself will invoke their spirit of imagination. Be sure and visit the Education Room (main floor) where they can create a masterpiece of their own. And trust us, you haven’t really “seen” a Dali until you’ve seen one through the eyes of a 5-year-old.

6. The Food

Amber Guetebier

We’re not going to lie: the food options at the Sirata offer enough range and variety that we were hard pressed to eat elsewhere. Foodie-loving locals come from all over to dine at the Compass Grille, the fanciest of the Sirata’s three eateries. But don’t think you have to bust out a suit and tie: it’s beach-fancy and kids are super welcome. They also offer a daily breakfast menu, starting at 7 a.m. Fresh local seafood is abundant on all the restaurant menus. Parents can’t go wrong with Harry’s Beach Bar (11 a.m. to 10 p.m.). It’s been consistently ranked as one of the Top 5 Florida Beach Bars and comes with a killer view and the aforementioned poolside hanging chair garden. Kids will find all kinds of easy-to-eat delights from pretzel bites to burgers. And Rum Runners Bar & Grille  might be one of the best places along the entire of St. Pete Beach to catch the sunset (they’ll light a fire and you can order right from a cozy beachfront Adirondack chair: Ask for Rafiqa!)

Venture off property to eat at one place in St. Pete and we promise you will not be disappointed. FarmTable Cucina  (179 2nd Ave N., St. Petersburg) is not only one of the best restaurants in the area, it’s arguably one of the best restaurants we’ve visited, period. With a menu by chefs Michael Mina and Don Pintabona, the Italian-inspired dishes are comprised of locally grown and sustainably obtained ingredients, and you can taste it in every bite. It's casual, it's family style and yet it feels like a beautiful indulgence. Located above LOCALE market, you can pick up some Florida-harvested sea salt to take home.

Pssst: Wine Wednesdays mean bottles of wine are half-priced so hop a cab over from the Sirata and live it up.

7. Fort DeSoto Park

iStock

If you’re up for some further adventures, a short car ride away is Fort DeSoto State Beach where you can rent paddle boards and kayaks to explore the park and the mangrove forests with the kids. The waters are typically very calm and gentle. There are also tons of trails, including many that are stroller-friendly and cool things like old canons to explore. You will need a car or taxi to access this area.

8. An Excuse to Indulge

Amber Guetebier

The iconic 1920s “pink palace,” the Don Cesar, is just a delightful 1.5 mile walk down the beach (or hop on a bike and cruise down in a few minutes flat) from the Sirata. The great news is you can book a treatment at Spa Oceana even if you’re not a hotel guest. You can treat yo’ self to a massage or a mani-pedi and then eat lunch in the rooftop garden patio.

Insider tip: Monday through Thursdays, non-hotel guests can gain access to the Don Cesar’s spa with a $30 day pass. This allows you use of the sauna, steam room and other spa facilities. Hotel guests can obtain this pass any day of the week.

Getting There & Around

Sirata

Look for flights into Tampa, the nearest major airport and then arrange a car service to bring you directly to the hotel (for a fee). Sirata Beach Resort partners with Resort Transportation Services, 727-343-3303. They can pick you up at the airport and take you directly to the front door of the resort. They have booster seats, car seats and infant seats too. (Just request one when booking your ride.)

It is possible to experience St. Petersburg and St. Pete Beach without a car. Once on site, you can use Free Beach Ride to get you a ride to places like downtown St. Pete or the Dali Museum. Ask the hotel concierge to hook you up. To get to the Fort DeSoto State Park you may need a cab or Uber since Free Beach Ride doesn’t take you all the way into the park.

If you rent a car, your stay at the Sirata includes overnight parking.

The spa offers both individual services (like Mommy & Me nails) as well as party packages for kids who love the idea of cozying up in fluffy pink robe with all their friends. For spa newbies, try the "My First Spa Experience," which includes a manicure and pedicure plus a mini strawberry or chocolate soufflé facial, a take-home ring and flip-flops.

Got a gaggle of girls to entertain? Try the "Day Spa Diva" party, which comes with a mani/pedi and a facial for each guest as well as unlimited sparkling drinks. All parties include luxurious spa robes, full use of the comfy lounge, "Just Dance" games and karaoke; plus, the birthday girl gets her own tiara to wear throughout the soirée.

Cost: $16 and up for individual spa services; $400 and up for parties.

Dream Come True

Dream Come True Party Room via Yelp

The best thing about the Dream Come True Party Room is that your party doesn't have to be a full-blown party! The locally-run venue offers private playdates for as few as two children for only $18 a person. This includes dress-up, face-painting, a craft—and some quality time with a real, live princess. There are also weekly "Happy Hours" which include a similar program and cost only $10 a child. Celebrating a birthday? Private parties include a princess of your choice, dress-up, face painting, nails, crafts, storytelling, cupcakes and food.

Insider Tip: Don't worry if your birthday girl has a few boys at the ball. There are plenty of pirate, wizard and knight costumes for kids who don't want to don a gown.

Cost: Private playdates are $18 a child ($15 a child if there are 4 or more kids); Happy hour is $10 a child; private parties are $395 and up.

Diva Girls & Adventure Boyz

While we're talking princesses—what about all those wannabe princes out there? At Diva Girls & Adventure Boyz (owned by the same company as Le Chic Spa), there are party packages that both girls and boys will like. The "Knights and Princesses" party lets girls get glammed up with gowns and makeup while knights get decked out with tattoos and cool hairdos (of course, the girls may want this, too, and that's fine too!).

Got an aspiring American Idol?  The "Pop Star/Rock Star" party includes a plethora of rockin' duds for boys and girls who want to get onstage and belt it out. There's also a foozball table and an air hockey table for kids who want to step away from the royal affairs and just play.

Cost: Party costs vary but the "Pop Star/Rock Star" starts at $459 for eight guests; "Knights and Princesses" starts at $475

Disney Parks

Disneyland knows princesses. So where better to get ready for the ball than the place that practically invented Happily Ever After? Cinderellas hoping for a transformation will be sufficiently wowed as Disneyland stylists—er, Fairy Godmothers—transform them into the princess of their choice. All makeovers include a new hairstyle, shimmering makeup, a princess sash and cinch bag, a face gem, and nail polish. It's a splurge, that's for sure, but seeing your little royal's eyes light up when she sees the princess in the mirror? Priceless.

Cost: $64.95 and run as high as $229.95 (not including admission to Disneyland). Higher-tiered packages come with a princess dress as well as professional photos of the transformation.
