The 12 Best Things You Can Do for Yourself During Pregnancy

You’re selecting nursery furniture, choosing the perfect name, and creating a baby registry, but what about you? Your body and your life are going through big changes, and you need new ways to take care of yourself. Read on to find out the best things that expectant moms can do for themselves as they wait for their bundle of joy to arrive.

1. Yoga
Taking a prenatal yoga class can do wonders for your aching muscles. If your body is struggling with the extra weight of your impending bundle of joy, squeezing in a yoga session even once a week can help keep you feeling lithe. Look for low-impact classes in person or online. 

2. Prenatal Massage
If it's in your budget, a prenatal massage can be one of the best things you do for yourself. Not only is a prenatal massage a welcome chance to focus on yourself for an hour or two, it's also a great way to leave stress behind. A good prenatal massage therapist will know how to work out your sore muscles in a way that's safe for you and baby.

3. Undies
Many pregnant women notice early on that their regular undies just aren't cutting it anymore. Hemp undies from WAMA are exceptionally breathable. If you’ve birthed a baby past age 35, you’ve undoubtedly heard the super-flattering phrase “advanced maternal age.” (Don’t even get us started on the “geriatric pregnancy” label.) While these terms may not give you the warm fuzzies, we’re here to share the good stuff about taking on parenthood later on. Sure, it may come with a few extra fine lines here and there, but it has compelling benefits too. Read on to find out why being an older mom is the bomb.

1. You make the most of the moments.
If you have more than a few years of adulthood under your belt, you’ve undoubtedly experienced the feeling of time passing more quickly. While the moments speeding by in a blur can be vexing, it also creates an acute appreciation of the preciousness of each moment. As an older mom, you tend to slow down and take it all in—to breathe in the baby smell, long and deep, to soak in those sweet smiles and linger over the crib long after baby’s fast asleep. 

2. You take a relaxed approach.
The awareness of time has another effect as an older mom: recognizing that milestones don’t need to be met in a rush. As an older mom, you will likely be more comfortable easing up on expectations. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and weaning a baby off of a bottle or potty training doesn’t have to happen overnight either.

3. Confidence comes more naturally.
While having a baby in your later years may mean you do it with a few gray hairs, it also comes with an extra dose of mom-fidence. You’ve released that inevitable, youthful striving after an ever-elusive image of perfection and learned to be comfortable in your own skin. You pass on the hot-button topics (breast or bottle? Co-sleeping or not?) and settle into a routine that works for you and your baby—no explanation or apology needed.

4. You have to buy less baby stuff.
If you jump on the baby train a few years after your friends and family, you may just experience a flood of hand-me-down baby clothes and gear. Many parents pack away totes of tiny jammies and stash bigger items, like a crib, stroller and highchair, away in the attic in case of a “surprise” baby scenario, but after a few years, they may be ready and willing to hand over the goods and regain their storage space. Brand new baby and a bigger wallet, what’s not to love?

5. You can skip the maternity section.
That nugget about friends and family members setting aside tiny jammies just in case? Same goes for stretchy-topped jeans and nursing tops. Besides the obvious savings, shopping for maternity clothes in a friend’s closet is way more fun than hitting up your local store anyway.

6. You don’t sweat the small stuff.
A blow-out as you’re walking out the door may set you back a few minutes, but it won’t throw your whole day out of whack. With age comes a honed ability to put things in their proper perspective. As an older mom, you may find you’re able to keep your cool when facing the everyday frustrations of life with a baby (think: nap strikes and messy meals). As you take things in stride, you and your mini-me will benefit from this more chilled-out parenting approach.

7. You’ve been around the block, and now you can show baby the way.
Being an older mom often means you’ve had the time and opportunity to explore different paths—from career choices to hobbies—and have developed your personal interests and strengths. Those added experiences will inevitably inform your motherhood and allow you to pass on that wisdom to your child's benefit. Say hello to baby Einstein!

8. You’ve been there, done that.
Having experienced a few years of adult life before baby’s arrival may help you freely focus on your baby without regret. Once you’ve checked the box next to some life goals—from career mile markers to travel aspirations—you’ll be better able to settle into the routine elements of motherhood without the FOMO that may have struck in your youth. In the same vein, if you’ve spent more than a few years with your partner during that time, your relationship will have had time to deepen and mature before baby makes three. A win-win! 

9. Fewer stresses from finances.
While this doesn’t apply across the board, studies show that women who enter motherhood later on often benefit from more financial stability than their younger counterparts. This is often the result of older moms having had the chance to spend additional years developing their careers and building up a comfortable savings. This extra cushion can allow you to take more time off from work, hire help or even embrace experiences, like international travel, that may have been out of reach in your younger years.

10. Gleaning from seasoned moms is a breeze.
When you’re a young mom, getting advice from moms in your peer group can be tough, as everyone is navigating new waters. But when you experience motherhood for the first time a bit later in life, calling your crew to get the low-down on anything from sleep training to the best baby sunscreen will easily yield tried-and-true advice.

Want to consign? While some shops require a consignment fee, you won’t be charged one at The Growing Years. They accept gently-used children’s clothes from newborn to size 16, children’s shoes, and maternity wear. It’s by appointment only. I Miss My Ankles & Other Third Trimester Failures

It’s here! The third trimester of my second pregnancy has arrived. I am so grateful my baby boy is healthy and growing like a weed. In a short twelvish weeks, I will get to meet him for the first time and kiss his fat little adorable face. In the meantime, I am enjoying feeling him kick and move around in my ever-growing belly. And with a growing belly comes a growing me, an everything growing me.

It’s so weird, but it’s like someone flipped a switch on the first day of the third trimester. I feel more pregnant, more tired, more moody, more hungry and more ready than ever to meet my tiny little human. With that said, I have had some major third-trimester failures. I thought I would share. They may make your life a little easier one day.

Don’t cry because you grew cankles overnight. I woke up this morning and realized that my legs resembled stumps with feet on the end. I put on a knee-length dress with flats and made the mistake of looking in a full-length mirror. Nothing makes you feel less attractive than not being able to tell where your calf stops and your ankle starts. I miss you, ankles, come back soon. Please.

Don’t examine your stretch marks and cry again. Stretch marks happen. There is no secret cream that keeps them away. I didn’t get them until 36 weeks with my first pregnancy. This time, they were out in full force from the beginning. They will fade with time, and until then, I will wear them with pride. Those stretch marks came from growing a tiny human, and that’s pretty freaking awesome.

Don’t sweat the small stuff. When I found out I was pregnant, my husband and I decided that we should get our kitchen remodel done before the baby arrived. Well, it has gotten pushed back a few times and won’t start until May 1st. I am due mid-July. Fingers crossed that I don’t have construction workers welcoming me home from the hospital. Remodels never take longer than expected, right?

Don’t feel bad for forgetting things. Baby brain is real. They did a scientific study showing it exists! I am normally on top of my game when it comes to remembering things and multitasking like a freaking champ. But the last seven months have been crazy hard. I forget things, don’t remember what I am supposed to be doing in the middle of a task and lose concentration easily. I have been really hard on myself, but you know what, this too will pass. I am just hoping I don’t drive away with Henry’s favorite blankie on the back of the car again.

Don’t feel guilty for napping. Growing a human is hard work, people. You deserve a nap! Or ten!

Always have snacks available. Hangry has taken on a new meaning the last couple weeks. Throw some granola bars and a cheeseburger in your purse in case of emergency. Along with a bottle of Tums. You never know how long a meeting may last. Better safe than sorry.

Make sure your toddler is ready for the new baby. Hahahaha! This could be a real disaster. I had an amazing plan that I would have my two-year-old potty trained by the time baby #2 comes. Except that he shows zero interest in using the potty. Having two kids in diapers isn’t that expensive, right? This is me praying for a potty-training miracle.

Don’t feel bummed when none of your clothes fit. Even my maternity clothes are starting to feel too tight. I went through my entire wardrobe the other morning and could not find a single top that fit over my large belly. Then I had a genius idea. I wore what used to be a knee-length dress as a top. I even got a compliment saying it was a cute outfit. I did wear a cardigan over the top/dress because it was a little tight here and there, but in the words of Tim Gunn, I made it work. I will be winning no fashion awards in the next couple of months and plan to wear only black maxi dresses that hide my cankles.

Don’t weigh yourself! You have to see it every time you go to the doctor. Don’t make it even worse by weighing yourself at home. It’s going to go up. A lot. That’s just the way it is. Enjoy your tacos and give yourself a break.

Don’t try to wear cute heels, even if just for a short amount of time. I tried it. I was miserable. I ended up walking around barefoot after about twenty minutes. I don’t care if you think heels make your cankles look less cankle-ish. You will hate your life.

The third trimester is tough. Don’t beat yourself up over things that are out of your control. This too shall pass and life will be back to (maybe) normal soon!

Omg—you’re pregnant. Congratulations, mama, you’re in for the ride of a lifetime. Like most rides, there are sure to be bumps to navigate along the way. The first, and most obvious, is the one you’ll need to dress for the next nine months! But, don’t despair, we’ve got you (and your growing baby bump) covered. Use these 10 fashion tips and you’ll sail through your pregnancy feeling stylish and comfortable.

1. Save money by opting for less expensive leggings and tank tops.
Instead of breaking the bank on expensive maternity pieces that you’ll outgrow and never wear again after pregnancy, opt for cheap maternity leggings and tank tops that can be worn on the regular for the next nine months. To dress up these staples, splurge on items you can continue wearing once baby arrives, like a nice cardigan or button-down top.

2. Buy nothing for as long as possible.
Resist the urge to shop online for maternity clothes as soon as you hear the news you’re expecting. Instead, take a solid inventory of what is in your closet already that you can continue wearing. Although you’ll start to feel changes happening in your body right away, the reality is that your current wardrobe will fit for some time, so hold off as long as you can and save your pennies for a few core pieces you’ll need down the road.

3. Don’t buy pieces much larger than your current size.
It’s easy to want to anticipate what will be happening to your body down the road, but the truth is you don’t know what’s in store and your bump will grow at its own pace. So, it’s better to buy pieces that will grow with you. 4. Wear your favorite jeans longer.

It’s more than likely you’ll have a few special-occasion events to attend at some point in your pregnancy. For those occasions, try renting an outfit. It gives you the option of finding a piece you truly love without forking over a substantial amount of money for something you will probably only wear once. Embrace the next nine months as much as possible and let yourself splurge on a few pieces you know you’ll want to wear after your baby arrives. Perhaps it’s the most cozy pajamas that will help you relax after a long day or a trench coat you love and makes you feel stylish as soon as you throw it on. Treating yourself to a few special pieces may just get you through the more stressful days.

9. Invest in what’s underneath!

San Francisco has a dearth of kids’ consignment shops, so budget-conscious locals all cheered when this hip and friendly new boutique, decorated with vintage toys, opened last summer. The owner, a former buyer for fan favorite Chloe’s Closet, has an eye for sourcing cute, cool, high-end used kids’ clothes (sizes newborn to 12), which she sells back at incredible prices. You can also find unique toys, mobiles, locally-made art and children’s jewelry. Keep kids busy in the reading nook, complete with comfy bean bag.

Chloe’s Closet
This San Francisco consignment favorite has three locations. The Bernal Heights store has long been a go-to for city moms and is on pretty much every “Best Kids’ Clothing Store” list in the city. From toys to costumes to maternity clothes, parents will find everything they’re looking for and will likely go home with much more. The Bernal location sells clothes for kids (from newborn to size 12) and moms, while the Inner Sunset location sells only kids’ items (newborn to size 10). The Berkeley location features kids’ sizes newborn to 12 as well as women’s maternity. (Note that you can consign women’s maternity and non-maternity clothes at all three locations, whether or not they can be sold there.) This well-stocked store in a shopping mall (plenty of parking!) in Walnut Creek has one of the largest selection of used pregnancy gear around, ranging from posh working outfits to nursing bras. They also feature all styles and brands of kids’ clothes up to size 16. It’s easy to keep kids entertained here with the toys they’re welcome to play on and try out, and a TV to distract if all else fails.

Located in an unassuming strip mall in Concord, tiny, pleasantly-packed Growing Pains is a treasure trove of gently used clothes and toys for the very young. You may not find as many items for older kids and teens, but babies and toddlers are extremely well represented. One of the biggest selling points is that unlike many chic consignment shops, this one is happy to buy and sell lower-end brand like Carters and Target, to mix in with the pricier items. Super friendly service makes selling and shopping here a pleasure.

While their brick and mortar boutique in Pleasanton has closed, you can shop an even wider selection (and consign by mail) at their sleek website. They have a fantastic inventory of new and like-new children’s clothing, books, toys and gear at 40-60% off retail prices. They buy clothing outright, and accept baby gear on consignment. Clothing items range from 12 months to 10 years. Note that they do not accept clothing brands from big box stores including Circo and Cherokee from Target and Arizona from JC Penny. They also won’t take cribs, mattresses, stuffed animals or car seats. Favorite brands recently found here are Baby Gap, Crewcuts, Tea and Janie and Jack.
