For your little knights and princesses, this meticulously restored 1920s castle is straight out of a storybook. Located near the top of Wonderland Avenue and Laurel Canyon Boulevard (an artsy enclave famous for being home to legendary rock stars from the 1960s and 1970s), the grounds are completely enclosed by stone walls, and offer a private courtyard off the master, a built-in fire pit and a spacious pool to play in. Original details like stone turrets, gothic arches, and exposed beams abound. It’s a splurge, but so worth it.
This beautiful, open-concept loft overlooks the Pacific Ocean and is surrounded by three acres of mature gardens. Bonus? The oranges and lemons are ready to pick upon your arrival. Besides the enviable outdoor dining with ocean views and access to the nearby “Billionaire’s Beach” (where celebrities like David Geffen, Dr. Dre, Rob Reiner, Larry Ellison, and the former Dodgers CEO Jamie McCourt have reportedly had seaside homes), this colorful and light-filled home has a quirky fun feel that makes us think staying here is practically guaranteed fun.
Beach House with Arcade Games and a Rooftop Deck – Venice

This tri-level home is just four blocks from Venice’s trendy Abbot Kinney Street (shops and restaurants galore!) and a 10-minute walk to the Venice Boardwalk. With plenty of room to spread out, this home has three bedrooms and 2 1/2 bathrooms, with a spacious living room that’s got a stand-up arcade game and foosball table. But the real highlight of this spot (besides the killer urban location) is the rooftop, which has panoramic views of Venice, as well as a barbecue, fire pit, dining, and lounge area.
Note: Because of all the levels (and no gates on the stairs), we recommend this home for families with kids over 5.
Located smack dab in the middle of the historic Venice Canals (the SoCal version; not the Italian one), this unassuming 1950s bungalow is tucked between large Chinese Maple and Eucalyptus trees and offers a quiet respite—despite being just a few blocks from the bustling Venice Beach. When you’re not enjoying the serene waterfront view, take a quick stroll to see myriad street performers, sidewalk artists, stores, coffee shops, and eateries around the Venice Beach Boardwalk.
The rental is the front unit of a duplex bungalow and offers 1 bedroom, 1 full bathroom, a full kitchen, a deck overlooking the canals, and 1 dedicated parking spot.
Note: Babies and kids are welcome at this Airbnb, but due to its proximity to the canal (the walkways don’t have fences to stop littles from falling in) and numerous stone steps, the host says it’s “not ideal” for smaller kids.

This pristine hillside home looks like something out of a magazine. If you’re lucky enough to snag a reservation (Book your stay early!), the four-bedroom historic lake house won’t disappoint. Located within walking distance to the water, the home has 180-degree lake views from almost everywhere in the house—with three huge decks perfect for watching the boats go by as you soak in the hot tub or stay warm by the fire pit. It was built in 1935 but has been 100 percent remodeled with all the modern amenities and special touches—including leather couches, beaded chandeliers, and a “swing bar” on the first floor that features wooden playground swings instead of seats. There’s also a “kid loft” with three built-in twin beds and a toy shelf stocked with games, puzzles, and books.
The host, a mom of three, said that her goal was “to outfit the house with everything a parent would need so they don’t have to bring a single baby item.” That means you’ll have pack ‘n plays, noise machines in every room, high chairs, kids’ cutlery/dishes, and plenty of games to keep the kids busy.
Note: Don’t worry about those three levels and your little climbers! The host provides baby gates (located in the closets) to block off any areas or stairs that you want to be off-limits.
Vaulted wood ceilings? Check! Bunk beds? Check! Waterfront location with a dock to park your kayaks, canoes, or other water vehicles? Yes, yes, yes! This Big Bear cabin has everything you’d want in a summer getaway spot. Relax and take in the view through the floor-to-ceiling picture windows, or step onto the outside deck to enjoy unobstructed lake views while you barbecue beneath the stars (Hint: You’ve got a perfect view of the Fourth of July fireworks from here!). There’s also a grassy yard that leads to the waterfront, where there’s a dock free for guests’ use (boat/kayak rentals are available from shops throughout Big Bear, and these can be delivered to the home).
Note: The host offers 1 free (1-day) snowboard or ski rental in the winter months or 1 single kayak rental (for 2 hours) in the summer months.
Nestled amid the Alpine forest of Idyllwild-Pine Cove, about 2 hours from Los Angeles, this mystical abode is a dream come true for anyone who is into fairies and magic. Designed as a creative space—and, by the looks of its Instagram page, popular with yogis and artists—the bohemian three-story cabin has enough enchanting nooks and crannies to keep kids endlessly exploring. The home has a movie room, a library, a yoga studio (renting this costs extra), and five colorful bedrooms. Decorative tree branches lace their way around spiral staircases, and cozy treetop-level window nooks will make a birdwatcher out of anyone who stops to sit. Outside, a network of wooden bridges and platforms crisscross the exterior, leading the way through the trees to three fire pits, a sauna, a jacuzzi, and numerous outdoor sitting areas.
Note: This place may not be suitable for children under 5, since the home contains several staircases (including a spiral one) and fragile “magical” items.

But the real highlight of this place lurks behind a hidden door: Pull the right book on the bookshelf and you’ll find a Batcave so authentic you’ll wonder if the owner works in the movie biz (Hint: He doesn’t). The cave houses a life-size model of the caped crusader himself, a “control center” where heroes-in-training can pull up a chair and oversee Gotham; and a movie theater with luxury recliner seating for nine people and a large movie screen. It’s all so fun you won’t want to leave.

Besides being far from the light pollution of nearby cities, the three-bedroom home 20 minutes from Joshua Tree has a standalone dome observatory so you can get a closer look at our celestial neighbors. And don’t worry if you’re not a professional astronomer, the observatory uses software that lets you select a constellation on the computer for the telescope to automatically rotate accordingly. Besides that stellar experience (which, let’s be honest, is reason enough to visit), the rental also has two game rooms (with a pool table, ski ball, and shuffleboard table), an outdoor hot tub, and a fire pit. Perched on a hill in the middle of the rocky landscape, it also has 360-degree views of the surrounding area.
Enjoy a night on the farm inside your very own tipi at this Temecula-area farm stay where the animals are the real stars of the show. You’ll sleep on comfy floor mattresses inside an authentic teepee surrounded by farm animals, including a whole herd of goats (Pssst: Two new babies were just born in May!), chickens, miniature horses, pigs, and one lama. The tipi has a bathroom, hot shower, propane fire pit (the tent is ventilated enough so that it’s safe—we asked!), fridge, mini kitchen, Wifi, 2 twin beds, and a queen bed. When you’re not hanging in the tipi, your fam is free to roam the fruit orchards; pet, brush, or feed the animals; and play on the tree swing. You can even help milk the goats if that’s your thing.

Designed as a labor of love by a dedicated father-son team, the converted trolley car comes fully equipped with a queen-sized bed, 40″ TV, stovetop, fridge, microwave, air fryer, dishes, silverware, tile shower, games, heating & air conditioning. There’s also a large deck with recliner chairs and a barbecue if you want to cook under the stars before heading out to explore the area; the trolley is about 30 minutes from Vasquez Rocks, 10 minutes to Six Flags Magic Mountain, and 50 minutes to downtown Los Angeles.
Note: While children aren’t prohibited, the trolley only has one bed, and isn’t child-proofed. If you don’t mind ditching your partner for your a little, the host is fine with children, but this quirky spot may be best left to the grown-ups.

Commune with the great outdoors in total comfort when family “camping” becomes family “glamping.” We’ve rounded up the cushiest, coziest, most luxe places to glamp in SoCal that offer all the fresh air and scenic views you want from a camping trip without the stress and mess of pitching a tent. From Airstream trailers and tiny houses to lovely yurts and waterside cabins, these spots have amenities galore!
Joshua Tree is one of our favorite national parks to visit with kiddos. Not only is it a short drive from San Diego, but it also has some of the best hiking trails around, stunning scenery, and stargazing that would make even Neil DeGrasse Tyson envious. If you want to camp out with family but aren’t really feeling the tent experience, AutoCamp Joshua Tree is the next best thing. Located just 10 min. outside the park, this is glamping at its finest. With 47 custom Airstream trailers and 8 rectangular units across 25 acres, this luxe oasis in the desert offers a comfortable and chic respite filled with amenities for those who don’t exactly want to “rough it” in the great outdoors. The mid-century modern clubhouse on the property features a counter where guests can order a curated selection of food and beverages, a large patio with heated furniture, a communal firepit for some serious s’mores making, and a swimming pool—perfect after a long day of exploring.
The San Diego Metro KOA Resort is beloved for its many family-friendly amenities. If you’d rather forgo bringing your own tent or RV, you can stay in one of the deluxe cabins onsite. Cabins include partial kitchens, bathrooms, showers, and all the comforts of home. But the real benefit of camping here is the long list of swell activities to entertain kids. Check out the pool that’s open year-round, jump to your heart’s content on 3,500 sq. ft. jumping pillows, scale the climbing wall, rent a bicycle and go for a ride, stop by the playground for endless fun, or shoot hoops at the campground’s basketball facilities. With all that excitement, you’ll definitely work up an appetite so pop into the Sand Castle Café for a bite while littles show off their sand castle-building skills on the boardwalk.
Set on an 85-acre private nature retreat in a secluded forest meadow, the Bluebird Tiny House is a vintage horse trailer that’s been completely reimagined. This tiny house that sleeps 3-4 people features beautiful natural materials, old-fashioned wood cabinetry, handmade ceramic tiles, a fully equipped kitchen, luxurious linens, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a smart TV, and even a fireplace. Other amenities include a spa-inspired bathroom, a large deck overlooking the forest, a hot tub, and a firepit for cozying up under the stars. The secluded Lion’s Den retreat in the Cleveland National Forest at Laguna Mountain invites families to sleep outdoors in total and complete comfort. A bell tent features a queen mattress, sofa bed, and a tented lounge with two additional sofa beds—providing ample sleeping space for your entire brood. There’s also a double tree tent and a 2-story triple tree tent with two hammocks available for guests as well. And the creature comforts don’t end there—picture an outdoor kitchen space, hotel amenities, and a fire pit for cooking your favorite camp-inspired dishes. Last, but not least, there’s a shower and a flush or composting toilet (cue angels singing).
Talk about a magical place to stay—Joshua Tree’s Dome in the Desert is truly one of a kind. This modern-bohemian space is designed with handcrafted natural wood and stone elements that reenergize your mind and spirit. The dome features a full kitchen, full bathroom, and two bedrooms—one with a king-size memory foam bed and the other with a daybed. If you visit when the weather is chilly, snuggle up by the wood-burning stove or if you're there in the summer, air conditioning will keep you nice and cool. The primo part of this unique getaway is the breathtaking desert mountain views and the twinkling starlit sky. You’re also in a perfect location—just a few miles from the town center and entrance to Joshua Tree National Park.
Designated as an International Dark Sky Park, Anza-Borrego Desert is one of our favorite places to visit for some out-of-this-world stargazing. But for all that star peeping, you’ll need a great place to stay and there’s nothing better than the vintage Airstream trailers at Palm Canyon Hotel & RV Resort. These luxurious trailers feature super comfortable beds for a solid night’s slumber, a shaded outdoor patio with a propane grill and fire pit, a fully stocked kitchen, access to the pools and gym, Big Horn Burgers and Shakes restaurant, and close proximity to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park less than a mile away.
If the idea of “roughing it” makes you cringe, the lakefront and floating cabins at Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve may be much more your style. Lakefront cabins feature a fire ring that’s perfect for family cookouts and ghost stories, as well as pedal boats to use during your stay. The floating cabins also feature a pedal boat and a large front porch where you can kick back and take in the majestic views. Other cabin amenities include a kitchen, bathroom, barbecue grill, air conditioning and heating, TV, and Wi-Fi. When you’re done playing at the lake, there are two swimming pools on the property and a renovated playground.
Keep in Mind: Weekend reservations tend to go quickly, so don’t sleep on making plans!
Lions and rhinos and deer, oh my! If you can’t swing a trip to Africa, the Roar & Snore sleepover at the San Diego Safari Park may be the next best thing. Campers of all ages are invited to join an overnight tent-camping experience overlooking the East African savanna habitat inside the park. Activities include dinner, breakfast, and s’mores, as well as walking tours to observe the nighttime activities of wildlife and morning wildlife presentations. If you upgrade to a Supreme Roar & Snore Safari package, you get to experience the Flightline Safari zip line, a Night Vision Safari, and VIP viewing of wildlife ambassador encounters.
Skip the ocean waves sound machine at bedtime and trade it in for the real deal. Sleep over the ocean (literally) at the Crystal Pier Cottages in San Diego. Originally built in 1930, these charming Cape Cod-style cottages on the Crystal Pier include fully equipped kitchenettes, a separate bedroom and living room, private decks over the beach, and room to park one car. For safety, the property also features gated entry and night security.
Keep in Mind: Advance booking is highly recommended—4 to 6 months ahead for winter and 11 months ahead for summer.
If you don’t mind a 2.5-hour drive from San Diego, Huttopia Paradise Springs is well worth the journey. As the first Huttopia resort on the West Coast, Huttopia Paradise Springs is located in the San Gabriel Mountains inside the Angeles National Forest. Thoughtfully constructed wood frame and canvas tents featuring all the comforts of home make for a relaxing stay. Tents feature electricity, beds, private bathrooms, camp kitchens, linens, large outdoor decks, and more. There are two camping experiences to choose from—Red Rock or Coulter Pine depending on what you’re looking for in your getaway. And unless you’re a local, that probably means staying at a hotel. But how do you choose a place when the options are as bountiful as the bevy of balloons for sale on Disneyland’s Main Street? We’re here to help! Whether you want a plush hotel inside the Disney bubble or a vacation rental with its own private playground, here are our picks for the best hotels and Airbnbs near Disneyland.
On-Property Disneyland Hotels

Staying at a Disneyland Resort hotel is definitely more expensive than choosing nearby accommodations, but for those who like to keep the Disney vibe going after closing time, it’s a must-do. Perks of staying on-site include early access to the parks (guests are allowed in 30 minutes before scheduled opening time), delivery of purchases to your room; special entrances; and opportunities to see Disney characters up close and personal (characters may saunter through the lobby or into the breakfast rooms). These are your choices, from most to least expensive:
Capturing the spirit of early California, Disney’s award-winning Grand Californian Hotel & Spa is the most luxurious of the on-site properties. The first hotel to be built inside a Disney park (it’s actually a part of California Adventure), the GC is the flagship hotel of the Disneyland Resort, with 948 guest rooms and 71 Disney Vacation Club Villas. The sprawling hotel has an upscale lodge sort of feel, with dark wood touches and elegant odes to Monterey pines and redwood forests. There are also three (!) swimming pools and five dining locations, including Storytellers Café, Hearthstone Lounge, GCH Craftsman Bar & Grill, and the award-winning Napa Rose restaurant.
Worth Mentioning: Guests of the hotel have a private entrance into California Adventure, which lets them bypass long lines at the main entrance.
Filled with old-time nostalgia that would make Walt proud, this 973-room hotel (the first one to be built at the park) offers three distinct towers to choose from—the Adventure, Fantasy, and Frontier Towers—each an homage to the park’s original lands. The landmark hotel has two pools and two water slides as well as memorable dining options including Goofy’s Kitchen, Tangaroa Terrace, Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar, and the award-winning Steakhouse 55.
Worth Mentioning: If you stay in the Fantasy Tower, keep an eye out for touches of pixie dust and “hidden” Mickeys lurking inside the hotel’s mid-century modern decor. In all guest rooms, the headboards light up with fireworks and play “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes.”
Note: Families looking for a home away from home might want to check out the soon-to-debut Villas at Disneyland Hotel, which will offer studios with kitchenettes, washers and dryers, and private bedrooms. The villas are scheduled to open in Fall 2023.
Disneyland’s least expensive (but still pricy) on-site hotel, Paradise Pier, offers a more basic experience than its ritzier cousins—but if you want to stay inside the Disney bubble, it fits the bill. The 481-room high rise has a SoCal “day at the beach” theme, and littles will love the sizable pool and a twisty waterslide. For dining, guests may enjoy the whimsical PCH Grill restaurant, with quick bites and refreshments also available in the lobby’s Surfside Lounge or at the poolside Sand Bar.
Note: Travelers should know that the hotel is currently under construction, so there may be expected closures and construction noise.
Worth Mentioning: Despite being an “on-property” hotel, Paradise Pier isn’t actually next to Disneyland; it’s a half-mile walk to the park’s front gates or a 5-minute walk to Downtown Disney, (where you can hop on the monorail to get to Disneyland Park).
Hoping to save a few bucks and don’t mind leaving the Disney bubble for the evening (note: this may be a good thing)? There are plenty of choices for fun, quality off-site lodging. Looking for a water park? Check! Hoping for a view of the fireworks? OK? Want a themed hotel? Sure! Here are your best bets:
Best Themed Hotel (that’s not part of Disneyland): Anaheim Majestic Garden

By the looks of the iconic castle turrets and the beautiful costumed princess who roams the halls, you’d think this place was a part of Mickey’s realm. On the contrary, this budget-friendly hotel just down the street from Disneyland offers enough magic for the littles without emptying your wallet (which means you can buy more at the park the next day!). The Medieval-themed hotel is sprawled over 13 acres that include three courtyards, a rose garden, an outdoor pool, and a koi pond. The rooms are spacious, with a royal theme that includes princess headboards and, in higher-class rooms, castle bunk beds.
Kids too pooped to stay at Disney until closing? The Disneyland fireworks can be viewed from several locations around the hotel, including the front entry and the pool area. When you’re ready to hit the park in the morning, the hotel has a free shuttle to whisk you the two minutes to the Downtown Disney shuttle stop.
Worth Mentioning: The hotel’s resident Princess Corinne is available for in-room bedtime stories or breakfast wakeup calls Fridays through Sundays. These visits include the princess and her royal page arriving with either a silver service of milk and a special sweet treat for bedtime, or juice and a sweet treat for breakfast. The visit includes a story, an autographed photo of the princess, crowns for each child, and a signed and dated “Royal Certificate of Visit” (The visit costs $75 for 1 to 2 children and $10 per additional child.).
Best Hotel with a Waterpark: Courtyard Marriot Theme Park Entrance

Located a short walk from the park’s front gates, this hotel features a sprawling water park that’ll make your kids be all, “Disney-what?” (at least for a few hours). That, and its family-centric amenities—including large rooms (some with bunk beds!) shuttle to the park, and a poolside view of the nightly fireworks—make a stay well worth leaving Disney grounds. If you can spring for the one-bedroom, bunk bed suite, you’ll have a two-bedroom apartment, with two bunk beds in one room, a spacious bedroom in another, and a kitchen-ish area with a microwave and mini fridge.
Worth mentioning: If your kids want to use the water park, be sure to make a (required) reservation! Guests are allowed three time slots per day.
Featuring a 30,000-square-foot waterpark, this hotel opened in 2020 and offers large, clean rooms, entertainment for kids, and a free hot breakfast. It’s a bit further from the park entrance (about a mile), so we recommend taking Anaheim Resort Transit (ART), which has a stop in front of the hotel. When you’re not at the park, kids will be happy to spend the day zipping down the slides or the evenings watching a movie on the wall by the pool. As for the rooms, they are all spacious, with family suites featuring bunk beds, a kitchenette, separate living and sleeping spaces, and two separate showers (plus a bathtub).
Worth mentioning: Kids must be at least 44 inches to ride the water slides (and there is a small baby pool for little swimmers).
Best for Littles – Howard Johnson Hotel and Water Park

If you’re a Disney regular, you’ve probably seen the whirly tube slides of this popular hotel from the monorail, since it sits just on the other side of the fence from the Tomorrowland station. Not surprisingly, Castaway Cove, the hotel’s pirate-themed water park, is the big draw here. The toddler-centric water park offers an assortment of water play features, a 200-gallon drench bucket, and a large curved slide. As for the hotel, which was originally built in 1965 (and which has been updated numerous times since then), it is simple but clean, with cheery rooms that are well-appointed, colorful, and spacious.
Note: Large families will want to opt for the deluxe rooms or suites, which offer bunk beds or “Kid Suites” so that parents can have a bed to themselves.
Worth mentioning: All Castaway Cove water features are shallow enough for non-swimmers to enjoy, so the water park is a thrill for even the youngest of guests. (That said, it’s definitely geared more toward younger kids than older, adrenaline junkies.
Closest Walk To Disneyland – Best Western Park Place Inn

If you’re looking to stay as close as you can to Disneyland while still reaping the cost benefits of staying off-site, this reliable no-frills hotel is just a stone’s throw from Mickey’s realm. Located across the street from the park entrance, all you have to do is wait for the light to turn green and walk 60 seconds to be in Disneyland territory (according to Disney Tourist Blog, it’s a 10-minute walk from the hotel to the turnstile). As for the rooms, don’t expect high-end perks—this is a “budget” hotel, after all—but the rooms are clean and newly renovated, and the breakfast is free. Enough said.
Worth mentioning: If you’ve got cranky kids and don’t want to wait to see the fireworks from inside the park, this hotel’s proximity to Main Street makes it a worthy viewing spot for nightly displays. Book a room facing the street and you’ll even be able to pop over to the window and see the sparkles without even going outside. Otherwise, standing just in front of the hotel works fine, too.
An upscale hotel that opened in 2021, this large modern hotel is a great choice if you’re looking for a more elegant style without compromising on location. Located right next to Disney’s California Adventure, the 618-room hotel is a peaceful respite from the theme park hubbub, with a grown-up vibe that’s markedly absent of toddler-filled splash pads and buzzing arcades (good news for some; not for others). Worth mentioning: Even though Pixar Pier is just across the street, you still have to walk all the way around the park to get to the entrance to either California Adventure or Disneyland Park. It’s a 15 to 20-minute walk that can be hard for little legs—so bring a stroller and get ready to crush your daily steps goal.

Whether or not you’re within walking distance of the park won’t matter when you step foot inside this amazing Disney-themed home that recreates the spirit of the park throughout its whimsical interior. Why is it that dads always seem to have everything they could ever want? Maybe they genuinely don’t want anything that they don’t already own. This Bavarian-themed restaurant might sound like it’s only fit for those of Octoberfest age, but it’s actually great for the kinders, too. Rhein Haus boasts indoor bocce ball courts, an outdoor biergarten and one of the best spots in town (short of Climate Pledge) to watch the Kraken play. While it tends to lean more towards a bar atmosphere the later you get into the night, if you head out there early, you can challenge your tiny ballers to a game of bocce. They have a full kinder menu for your diminutive Deutschers, or nosh on the homemade sausages and a giant pretzel the entire family can share. Das ist gut!

Who doesn’t love a good beach excursion? We know that when you are toting around a youngster or two, there is a good chance your beach outings include more digging sand out of toddler pants than sitting with a cocktail and watching your beach bums build a sand castle. But maybe, just maybe, you can have it all when you check out Bongos, a beach-themed Caribbean restaurant near Green Lake. Bongos is the ideal place to let your tiny sand tots do their thing. Along with an indoor seating area and a patio, there is an outdoor dining area filled with sand where you can all enjoy palate-pleasing Caribbean and Cuban food like pork and cuban sandwiches, jerk chicken, black beans and yuka fries with your toes in the sand and your tots preoccupied with the restaurant’s sand toys in the dunes. It’s pretty much a win-win. Great island food, relaxed ambiance and your little beach beauties playing away in their faux seaside happy place.

Move over, PT Barnum! The greatest show on earth might just be housed right here in Seattle. If your kids are ready to be a ring leader, let their imaginations run away with the circus at The Pink Door, a spectacular trapeze and entertainment-themed Italian-American restaurant in Post Alley. Each night features an eclectic mix of entertainment such as jazz and blues musicians, tap dancing and tarot card reading. While some of these gigs start a bit late for the miniest of maestros, don’t let this culinary, old-timey experience pass you by. You will want to hit this joint up on Tuesdays for their delightful aerial performances, with all the twists, turns and contortions performed right above you. There are four short performances between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m., first come, first served. This is one pasta and farm-to-table eatery where you and your posse can enjoy your vittles while someone else swings from the rafters.
There is no place more decked out in mid-century nostalgia then the one and only vintage-themed restaurant, XXX Rootbeer. Literally covered from floor to ceiling in '50s and '60s memorabilia and antiques, this former drive-thru will be so captivating for your groovy little gang they won’t want to leave. One of only two XXX Root Beer restaurants in the entire country (with the largest lighted Plexiglass sign in the west), it’s definitely a landmark you will want to experience. Grab some American diner fare for your little sock hoppers from the kids’ menu (hot dogs, burgers, fries), play a few songs on the old-fashioned jukebox and grab a sweet for the road from the oversized gumball machine. Don't forget quarters for the ride-ons outside. They're irresistible to toddlers.
Good to Know: The restaurant has outdoor seating for sunny days and a classic car show on most Sundays.
Looking for a restaurant where you can really have a racket? Why not try SPIN Seattle, an eccentric, graffiti-gorgeous ping pong restaurant. Yep. This is a legit ping pong eatery. Located in downtown Seattle, SPIN is a 10,000 square foot table tennis social club where you can reserve a ping pong table, unlimited balls, paddles and dedicated seating for up to 10 people. Reservations go for $39 an hour per table (they have 10 tables available). While this quirky, cool place does give off a pretty hip bar vibe, kiddos are welcome to come in and enjoy a bite and game (or two) before 9 p.m. The menu includes farm-to-table goodies like apps, pizza, tacos and sandwiches, perfect fare to refuel after all those backhands. Make a reservation for your petite ping pongers online before heading over. Don’t forget to check out their signature bathtub filled with ping pong balls. It's as amazing as it sounds.
Got a crew of feline fanatics? Head over to this Capitol Hill cafe right “meow.” It’s not just a cat decorated cafe with “Hang In There” posters on the wall. It’s an actual café where you can dine and also play with the furry critters IRL. At NEKO (it means cat in Japanese, where the cafe got its inspiration), your little kittens can nibble on light treats (think: donuts, cookies, bentos, savory breads), while you sip on coffee, wine or beer. If an afternoon spent petting the purr-fect pal is on your bucket list, also make a reservation in the cat room. Reservations are highly recommended, but if the kitty room is full, the café is always ready to welcome you and your feline fanatics. This will be an experience your tomcats and tabbies won’t want to hide from.
Good to Know: Kids 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult, and there must be one adult for every two kids under the age of 10 when in the cat room. Also, the feline friends here are adoptable.
Who says you have to be a queen to enjoy a spot of tea? The petite royals in your life can feel like princes and princesses when they visit the Queen Mary Tea Room—the oldest independently owned tea room in America! How very delightful. Located in Ravenna, this quaint Victorian-themed restaurant will charm your booties off. Come for brunch, lunch or afternoon tea and let your kids order off the kids’ menu that includes shortbreads, sorbets, fruit, tea cakes, tea sandwiches and grilled cheese. Set up your reservation for parties of two or three (1 hour and 45 minutes), or plan a two-hour reservation for up to six. Get your little royalty ready to put their pinkies up and head over to Queen Mary for a tea-rrific time. They also serve tea, ice tea and crumpets to go.
Good to Know: Booster seats and highchairs are not available, so plan accordingly. Also, Queen Mary needs her beauty sleep on Mondays and Tuesdays, so schedule your visit Wednesday through Sunday.
Want to dine with your adolescent alpine lover? While not a themed-restaurant per se, this place certainly has its own particular milieu that makes it worthy of this list, and your pocket-sized explorers will go gaga over it. It’s Washington’s highest elevation restaurant, the Summit House at Crystal Mountain Resort. While it’s got the lodge/ski resort feel, the novel fun for your young cliff connoisseurs is how you get there. When you get to Crystal Mountain Resort, you will need to climb the mountain. And by climb, we mean ride the enclosed ski gondola all the way up to the 6,872-foot top. Summit House gives you the most spectacular views of Mt. Rainier (like you could reach out and touch it views). The Summit House offers traditional faves, as well as a scrumptious “pasture, land and sea” menu. There is also outdoor seating (yes, please!) available first-come, first-served.
Good to Know: Always check the website before you go. If bad weather strikes, the gondola may not be operational. Also, your reservation does not include the gondola ride.

The Rooms at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa
After its multimillion-dollar design transformation in 2019, Renaissance Indian Wells, a Marriott Bonvoy property, officially re-opened as Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa—a nod to the hotel’s original name, storied legacy, and star-studded history. Among many features included in that mega makeover were the resort’s 560 beautifully decorated mid-century modern rooms, including 103 suites—all with balconies and breathtaking views of the mountains, pool, or golf course. The rooms are thoughtfully appointed with amenities to make life easier, including spacious closets (they were bigger than our closets at home), Keurig coffee makers, a mini fridge, complimentary bottled water, lush terry cloth robes, Aveda bath products, and LCD TVs that even feature Netflix (no need to enter your password here!).
Regular guest rooms have more than enough space for families of four or less, but if you prefer to level up, the one-bedroom suites are worth the extra price and deliver even more space complete with a dining table and two TVs. For larger family gatherings or extra special occasions, book the Ambassador, Executive, Governor, or even the Presidential Suites—they feature separate living and dining rooms that are ideal for entertaining and large groups or multigenerational stays.

Jump into the Desert’s Largest Swimming Pool
If there’s an award for hotel pools, Renaissance Esmeralda is winner winner chicken dinner! One of the best resort pools we’ve ever encountered, this is likely where spend much of your stay. There are three pools, a stunning waterfall, hot tubs, and plenty of lounge chairs and cabanas. Our favorite—the zero-entry pool off the resort’s sandy beach—makes you feel like you’re on a tropical island getaway. Parents can relax while keeping a watchful eye nearby as kiddos independently splash the afternoon away. The beach also features shovels and pails for some serious sandcastle building.
We reserved a private beach cabana during our stay and can’t recommend it highly enough. The cabana features a cooler stocked with bottled water, towels, plates and utensils, a sofa seating area, and four lounge chairs near the sand. The H20 Pool Bar offers walk-up service with light bites and drinks (hello, margaritas!) poolside. Or better yet, ask one of the many attentive waiters to deliver lunch directly to your lounger so you never have to move a muscle.

1. Desert Glow Entertainment
One of the resort’s newest additions is Desert Glow—the ultimate gaming and lounge experience on the lobby level. Open all day, we predict your kids will want to spend a sizable amount of time here (as ours did). Filled with everything from classic arcade games, virtual reality games and air hockey to claw games, Duckpin Bowling and a Gold Rush Escape Room, it’s pretty darn impressive. You can purchase a game card on site to fill with credits for play and each game costs around 10 credits. If you need assistance during your visit, staff are readily available to answer any questions you have.
2. Camp Esmeralda
The resort’s commitment to providing entertainment for the whole family continues with Camp Esmeralda—a children’s program led by skilled and creative counselors so parents can steal some time to themselves (cue angels singing). Their dynamic activities include arts and crafts, ceramic painting, slime making, canvas coloring, sand bottle making, and much more. The program is complimentary to resort guests, and hours and availability can be found on the resort calendar.

3. Lawn Games & More
Throughout the resort, there are a plethora of fire pits where you can cozy up with a good book, a game of UNO, or a cocktail. Foosball tables, ping pong tables, and corn hole games are also located around the hotel grounds, encouraging a little friendly competition. Parents, don’t miss Spa Esmeralda, the full-service spa which offers plenty of pampering treatments. And for active families, there are tennis courts, a state-of-the-art fitness center, bike rentals, outdoor yoga classes, and two 18-hole championship style golf courses at Indian Wells Golf Resort that surround the property and offer stunning mountain views. So, whether you’re taking a quick getaway or a longer respite from the world, Renaissance Esmeralda has everything you can dream of in one place. Prices vary depending on the season but tend to be less expensive during the (warmer) summer months.
Where to Eat at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa
Unlike other resorts that maybe have one or two restaurants (if you’re lucky), Renaissance Esmeralda features six wonderful dining options that offer something for everyone. The first morning of our stay, we grabbed breakfast at Café Biscotti which features a variety of tempting pastries like pain au chocolate (which we devoured), muffins, donuts, and fresh fruit. They also have a superb menu of signature coffees and other drinks to go. For dinner, we enjoyed a meal at The Place Lobby Bar with its fab selection of light bites and specialty drinks in a lively atmosphere. There’s ample seating inside, but given that it was such a lovely evening, we dined outside under the stars by the firepit.
Our last day in Indian Wells, we stopped by the incredible breakfast buffet at CAVA—the only restaurant in town to host a buffet like this seven days a week! Choosing what to eat first was the difficult part—with an omelet station, homemade pastries, fresh fruit, salmon, bacon and sausage, waffles, cereals and much more—it’s a fantastic way to please even the pickiest palates. In addition to CAVA’s usual offerings, they’re now hosting a special happy hour menu from 4:30 p.m.-6:00 p.m. daily, as well as live entertainment.
And if that’s not enough, the resort also features Glo Sushi with a delectable selection of rolls, B&F On-Demand which conveniently delivers breakfast or dinner to your room, and H20 (mentioned above) for fantastic poolside dining. Bon appétit!
The Best Things to Do near Indian Wells with Kids

If you feel like having an adventure offsite for the day, The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens is just five miles away from Renaissance Esmeralda. Whether you want to feed giraffes, get up close and personal with wallabies, check out the new Rhino Savanna, learn about animal care at the Tennity Wildlife Hospital and Conservation Center, or stop by the crazy cool model train exhibit, The Living Desert never disappoints. After you’ve tired your little ones out, head back to the resort for a refreshing late day swim.
Every March, Indian Wells Tennis Garden hosts the highly prestigious BNP Paribas Open–the largest ATP Tour and WTP Tour combined two-week event in the world. Just two miles from Renaissance Esmeralda, the event features some of the very best players in the world. When you’re taking a break from the action on the court, the stadium offers a Tennis Paradise experience around the grounds with unrivaled amenities, live entertainment, and luxe dining and retail options. Renaissance Esmeralda is a hotel partner for the tournament and ticket/hotel packages are available when booking earlier in the season. Unfortunately, this year’s Official 2023 BNP Paribas Open hotel packages are now sold out, but a limited number of hotel nights may still be available. This year’s tournament dates are March 6-19, 2023.
Just a 20 min. drive from Renaissance Esmeralda to Metate Ranch, Red Jeep’s San Andreas Fault Jeep Tour is always a family favorite for those who love adventure. The 3-hour tour winds through a maze of geological cuts and canyons of the San Andreas Fault Zone while a naturalist guide tells stories about the area’s plants, animals, geology, seismology, and Cahuilla Indians.
Located adjacent to Renaissance Esmeralda, the Indian Wells Golf Resort was named “one of the 30 best municipal golf courses in America” according to Golf Magazine. For young ones looking to up their game, private junior lessons can booked prior to your visit. Also, when available, the Troon Family Golf Program gives junior golfers one complimentary round of golf when playing with a paying adult after 3 p.m. Juniors may also rent Callaway Golf Clubs for free anytime they’re playing with a paying adult. Once the sun goes down, families should check out the club’s Shots in the Night experience. It’s fun for golfers and non-golfers alike and features Laser Putting by Netlinks and a brand new Top Tracer Driving Range. And if you work up an appetite, the famous food truck onsite serves beverages and elevated BBQ (including some kids’ menu selections).
A little over an hour’s drive from Renaissance Esmeralda, Joshua Tree National Park is the perfect day trip whether it’s your family’s first time or their 100th. Known for its incredible rock formations, adventurous hiking trails, and stunning stargazing opportunities, this national treasure is an absolute must-do when you’re so close by. Just be sure to fill up on gas before you head into the park as there aren’t any stations inside. Also, remember to download mobile maps ahead of time or stop by the visitor’s center to grab a paper one since cell service can be spotty. And, above all, pack more water than you think you’ll need (at least 1 gallon per day per person) as it’s difficult to find in the park.
