I don’t know about you, but I have a love-hate relationship with back-to-school time. It is always a relief to have a regular schedule again—bedtimes return to a reasonable hour, the constant “I’m bored” refrain disappears, and, as someone who works from home, I finally get my full days back. And yet, each year I find that I am taken by surprise by the busy-ness that fills our afternoons and evenings with soccer practices, music lessons, back to school nights, PTA meetings, and other school year activities.

With all of the back to school craziness, it feels even more vital that we protect our family dinners as important time to have together—time to reconnect, to catch up, and to share the events of our days. So each fall I make it a priority to focus on getting our dinner routine back on track. Here are the four things that I do to get our family dinner routine ready to go for the fall:

1. Plan out the meals for the week. I have found that if I put together a plan for the week, not only does getting dinner on the table become an easier, faster task, but it also takes some of the stress out of my day because I don’t have that 3:30 or 4 p.m. what-are-we-going-to-have-for-dinner panic.

One key piece of my meal planning is to take five minutes to look at the schedule for the upcoming week and assign meals to specific days. On soccer practice days, for instance, I know we won’t get home before 7, which means I need dinner to be ready to go or take only a few minutes to throw together. So for us, those are slow cooker nights. On the other hand, Thursdays are blissfully unplanned, so that is the evening when I can select a recipe that takes a little longer to make. If you want help with the planning of meals (or someone to do it for you), check out The Scramble, an online meal planning service that specializes in family-tested, easy-to-prepare meals.

2. Set a guaranteed minimum. The reality is that given our busy schedules, every member of my family is not going to be able to sit down to dinner together every night of the week. So we decided to commit to a minimum number of nights a week that we have dinner together. For us, that is five nights, including weekends. For some families it might be three, for others, all seven is achievable. When the kids were smaller, my husband got home too late to have dinner together, so we made it a priority to do weekend meals as a family. Pick what works for your family, and then try to stick with it!

3. One meal a week is leftovers. Every family feels differently about leftovers, but my family LOVES “leftovers night,” and it’s a great way to save money and avoid food waste. For my kids, it is their chance to have extras of their favorite meals of the week. For my husband, it means fewer dishes. For me, it is less work. If your family isn’t a fan of leftovers, then try turning them into something that is still faster and easier—leftover proteins and/or vegetables can become fillings for sandwiches or burritos. Extra veggies and grains can be mixed together and tossed with a dressing to become a hearty salad.

4. Sandwiches, Salads, and Cereals. Yes, eating healthy, delicious, well-rounded meals is important, but that doesn’t mean it has to be complicated. As busy families, especially as we get back into the swing of things in the fall, simplicity is key and time is of the essence. So I never rule out sandwiches, salads, and cereals. Grilled cheese sandwiches and a simple salad is a great option, as is a big salad with some crusty bread, or even (low-sugar) breakfast cereal with fruit and scrambled eggs. The point is: on those crazy nights eating together is the key, even more so than what goes in your mouth.

As we get back into the rhythm of the school year, let’s be kind to ourselves and make it possible to establish a solid routine. With a little planning, some flexibility, and simple meal options, a less stressful back to school season is possible.

The Deep South Biscuit Co.

Audrica B. via Yelp

If you're from the south, then you know good biscuits from bad. Trust us, these are good. Buttery, flaky, crispy on the outside and soft in the middle, you can order these straight OG or as gourmet as you'd like.

Don't Miss: While some people prefer The Ricky Bobby, we think everyone should try The Deep South In Your Mouth—a hand battered, buttermilk soaked, fried chicken breast with smoked  bourbon-bacon "jam," house made pimento cheese, fried green tomato & house aioli (on a biscuit, natch).

The Details: The Deep South Biscuit Co. can be found at most of the local food truck line-ups and festivals, including the Alpharetta Food Truck Alley and the Grant Park Food-o-Rama. You can rent The Deep South Biscuit Co. with a guaranteed minimum of $1250 for two hours of catering, plus any applicable travel fees.

Online: deepsouthbiscuitco.com

The Mobile Marlay

Bahruny C. via Yelp

This traditional (and not-so-traditional) fish and chips purveyor is a mobile unit of Decatur's Marlay House, an authentic Irish owner-operated Dublin-style pub.

Don't Miss: Parents, give the Lobster Tacos a try (6oz Maine lobster tail split on flour tortilla over spring mix and coleslaw. Topped with chipotle aioli sauce. Boom.), but don't worry—there's a Dog-n-Chips option for kiddie eaters, too.

The Details: Find The Mobile Marlay in Midtown and Downtown—usually around Colony Square and Regions Plaza—during the week. To hire, contact michelle@themarlayhouse.com for pricing.

S & J's Wood Fired Pizza

Jonathan S. via Yelp

Pizza for a party might sound like old hat, but what if that pizza came to your get-together in a mobile, 3500lb Italian-made pizza oven on a trailer? We’re talking about delish New York style pizza, wood fired and made-to-order.  Best of all, S & J’s uses only ingredients from local farms and their own garden. But, if you want to think out of the (pizza) box, you can opt for choices like charcuterie, wood-fire seared shrimp, stuffed mushrooms, bruschetta or pasta. Additionally, S&J's will help setting-up the service area, passing appetizers, cleaning tables and removing trash.

Don't Miss: Want to try S&J's at home, before hiring them for your party? Check out their Pizza Dinner Kit through Garnish & Gather, a local Atlanta food delivery service.

The Details:  Private Pizza Staff and Mobile Wood-fired Oven rentals start at $14.25 per person. Weekday minimum $650, with a weekend minimum of $750.

Mix'd Up

Chuck H. via Yelp

This rock n’ roll-inspired food truck serves gourmet burgers with an international influence. Much like good music is inspired by lots of different styles, so too are good burgers.

Don't Miss: While you can't go wrong with the burgers (designed by a classically trained chef), you can mess up your Mixd Up experience if you walk away without trying the funnel cake fries dipped in melted chocolate. Don't mess this up. Worth. Every. Calorie.

The Details: Find Mixd Up all over town, but they're regularly at the Smyrna Food Truck Roundup on Mondays, and at the best in-town festivals on the weekends. To hire, you can choose to either run a tab and let your attendees order what they want off the full truck menu (they'll keep a running tab and you pay at the end), ory you can set a cap for your budget needs. Set price events start at $14 a person, which includes 1 meal and 1 drink per person. There is a seasonal minimum from early spring to late fall of $800 for lunch to $1,000 for dinner based on a 3-hour window. Travel fees may also apply.

Buena Gente Cuban Bakery

Buena Gente Cuban Bakery via Yelp

Buena gente means "good people," and in addition to the good people serving up your food, you’ll find warm, freshly baked pastelitos filled with homemade guava preserves, empanadas, croquetas, and Cuban sandwiches, among other things, in this food truck.

Don't Miss: You have to try the cuban, obvi—the bread is light, flaky, a little sweet and also a little salty.

The Details: Find Buena Gente at Colony Square on the regular, or hire them yourself. There is a minimum of 75 guests, and a food minimum will apply. Contact buenagenteatl@gmail.com for a custom food truck rental quote.

Online: buenagente.com

Sunshine Alchemy

Sunshine Alchemy via Yelp

This craft food truck serves conscious cocktails and veganish organic fusion out of a converted FBI surveillance truck. Their vegetarian burger actually, in fact, does taste like meat, and if you're feeling adventurous, you could dive into some BBQ jackfruit on a Hawaiian roll.

Don't Miss: While the food is fab, you won't forgive yourself if you don't try a blackberry lemonade, served iced.

The Details: Find Sunshine Alchemy frequently at 12th & Midtown, and at Regions Plaza on Peachtree (as well as at all the hot food truck spots around Atlanta). To rent during the summer, there is an $850 sale minimum on weekdays, and a $1000 sale minimum on weekends. Winter pricing varies. Contact jasmine@spiritunderground.com for custom event quotes.

The Fry Guy

Angela S. via Yelp

We’ve yet to meet a kiddo who does not adore French fries. Serving up perfectly seasoned, hand-cut fries, you can jazz them up with garlic aioli, honey sriracha mayo, or red curry ketchup. Or, you can make it more of a meal by adding brown bag catering options like their delish chicken salad or veggie sandwiches.

Don't Miss: Truffle fries. They'll change your life.

The Details: Sale minimums vary by season and day of the week to rent Fry Guy. Call to set up your own custom Fry Guy experience, or inquire here.

Online: fryguyatlanta.com

Freckled & Blue

Andrea M. via Yelp

Freckled & Blue got their start as a catering company and just kept growing. Now their fresh, home-style food is available for lunch 4 days a week at their Smyrna location and you can scoop up their famous FAB Pimento Cheese at many Farmers Markets around Atlanta, and of course, their food truck!

Don't Miss: Think BBQ chicken, 4- cheese macaroni, pigs in a blanket, and banana pudding sound like the Southern favorites your crowd is craving? They are. You can't go wrong on this menu.

The Details: There is a $900-$1500 minimum to hire the food truck, but Freckled & Blue can also cater your event without the truck, with options for pickup or delivery.

Online: freckledandblue.com

Good Food Truck

Good Food Truck via Yelp

Famous for “The Poodle”—a hot dog on a French toast bun, apple maple slaw, topped with mustard and maple syrup—Good Food Truck lives up to its name! The littles will love when this bright red truck shows up to the event. But, now that they have expanded, you can choose from a whole fleet of vehicles to suit your catering needs: a truck, a trike, or a beautifully hand-painted Indonesian soup cart!

Don't Miss: The food is legit, but you have to try a snow. Whether you're sticking to watermelon shaved snow or want to venture into the exotic (we love the Ho Chi Minh, with coconut ginger syrup and tapioca pearls), these things are the bomb.  -

The Details:  There is a $750 minimum purchase required for the Truck, and a $500 minimum purchase for the Trike. Prices per person will vary, but you should plan on about a $10-15 price per head, based on the regular menu.

If you have little adventure seekers in your crew, then head east to the city of Rocklin to check out the new adventure course that’s a guaranteed day of fun. Zip lines, rope swings, rock walls and more—this massive outdoor paradise is just waiting to welcome mini adrenaline junkies. We checked it out and have the full scoop below!

Quarry Park

The city of Rocklin is just past Sacramento on Highway 80, about two hours from San Francisco. Quarry Park gets its name from the park’s history as a granite quarry, supplying granite to the California State Capitol Building. This 5 1/2-acre adventure park features activities for adults, teens and kids of all ages.

The Activities

Thrill-seekers suit up in harnesses and undergo gear training at Ground School before they head to their choice of activities. At one end of the park is the large aerial adventure challenge course where guests traverse an obstacle course requiring concentration and balance. Different levels are available, head to the third story for the biggest challenges. The good news is this is a choose-your-own difficulty course with many options along the way and skilled guides to help you out if you get stuck.

In addition to some smaller zip lines on the challenge course, guests can race their friends on the Big Gun Zip Lines—a set of three zip lines that are each 1,200 feet in length. Taking you over the quarry to the start of the aerial adventure course, these zip lines are a definite kid favorite.

Perhaps the most heart-stopping of activities is the Cliff Hanger Free Fall. Jump from the rim of the quarry to the floor below, if you dare! The free fall device slows your decent and ups the excitement.

Rock climbers can test their skills on the wall near the aerial adventure course. This spot is great for the little ones as the minimum weight is 40 lbs. here. You can also clip on to the Via Ferrata and make your way along the walls of the quarry horizontally.

Quarry Kidz Kove

Don’t worry, the younger set isn’t left out of all the adventures at Quarry Park. Head to Kidz Kove where they can literally spend hours climbing rope bridges, swinging on zip line seats and pretending they are spiders on a massive web.

Parents can plant themselves at a shady picnic table and relax as the kids tire themselves out. You can even reserve a table for your next birthday party or school soiree. This fully-enclosed area does not require kids to wear harnesses or helmets.

Just past the climbing structure is the Miners’ Maze. Wind your way through to see if you can make it to the center before you encounter one of the boulders.

Quinn Quarry Lake

Right next to the climbing structure is a small lake with calm waters. Take out a pedal boat when you need a bit of a break from the action. A parent is required to ride along with kids.

The Details

Quarry Park Adventures is open for the season on a daily basis. Start times are available in 15-minute increments and the number of adventurers is limited per time period so there’s aren’t a ton of people on the course at one time.

They have free lockers for you to use while you are on the course and often there is a food truck or snow cone truck there for purchasing snacks. You must weigh between 70-250 lbs. to do the zipline and other activities in the quarry, except the rock climbing which has a minimum weight of 40 lbs.

Tickets:
All Access: $44.99/4 hours, $29.99/2 hours
Single ride: $9.99
Rock climb ticket: $9.99/hour (40-250 lbs)
Quarry Kids Kove: $9.99/hour for kids ages 3-13.
Kidz Adventure Package: $18.99/2 hours includes Quarry Kids Kove and rock climbing

Connecticut just took a major step towards helping families. The state recently joined six others (and the District of Columbia) in offering paid family and medical leave.

The state’s senate and house recently approved the bill, but Connecticut workers were still waiting for the governor to sign before rejoicing. Now that wait is officially over!

The new act, which was signed into law by Gov. Ned Lamont on Tuesday, will give private sector employees 12 paid weeks of paid leave to care for a new baby or sick family members. The sliding pay scale isn’t just for salaried employees. It also provides minimum wage workers with up to 95 percent of their would-be earnings, capped at $900 per week.

Along with giving workers paid leave to care for infants and their fam, they can also get an additional two weeks of benefits if they aren’t able to work during pregnancy.

Even though Lamont has already signed the law into effect, employees aren’t eligible to start collecting benefits until Jan. 1, 2022.

This State Is Rolling Out 16 Weeks of Paid Family Leave: What Parents Should Know

It’s no big secret that the United States lags behind most other countries when it comes to paid family leave. But with the recent addition of Connecticut’s paid leave bill, there are now seven states giving workers the option to take time off after having a baby—and much more!

After passing the state senate and house last week, Connecticut governor, Ned Lamont, has plans to sign the bill into law, “ASAP.” So what does this new law mean for parents who live in the Northeastern state?

photo: Wayne Evans via Pexels

Under the new act Connecticut workers will get up to 12 weeks of paid family leave. And this doesn’t just include leave for parents with new babies. It also includes paid time off for workers who need to care for grandparents, older children and siblings. The law, which goes into effect in 2022, will provide 95 percent of low-wage employees’ pay (capped at $900 per week).

Non-low-wage earners may receive weekly paid leave up to 60 times the state minimum wage, according to the National Law Review. The law also allows employees to collect a paid intermittent leave entitlement—if they don’t need to take 12 weeks in a row off.

Previous family leave laws in Connecticut required employees to work at a company for a minimum of 12 months and at least 1,000 hours before getting the then-unpaid benefit. The new family leave act removes this requirement, setting a three-month employment minimum. Employees must also have already earned $2,325 in this period to qualify.

New Jersey has joined a growing number of states offering paid family leave. Doubling its previous mandated paid leave to 12 weeks, the Garden State is now among the best in the country.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy just signed legislation that will provide 12 weeks of paid leave after childbirth, as well as to care for a sick family member. The new law increases the weekly maximum benefit from $650 to $860. It also increases the allowed intermittent leave from 42 to 56 days within a 12-month period.

photo: Kelly Sikkema via Unsplash

“No one should ever be forced to choose between caring for a family member and earning a paycheck,” Murphy said in a statement. “By providing the most expansive paid family leave time and benefits in the nation, we are ensuring that New Jerseyans no longer have to face such a decision and that working families are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve. This comprehensive paid family leave program, coupled with the newly passed earned sick leave and minimum wage increase, are fundamental elements in building a stronger and fairer New Jersey for all working families.”

The new benefits will go into effect beginning July 2020.

Standing at 605 feet tall, the Space Needle has always been a spectacular sight for both visitors and Seattleites alike, but with its latest $100 million renovation, it looks better than ever! Sure, the Needle has been around since 1962 and you’re probably thinking ,”been there, done that,” but wait until you see what they’ve done with the place and the view. A whole new experience awaits you, and we have all the deets you need to know plus more on the epic climb to the top of the Needle with Base 2 Space. Read on!

photo: Suraj Joshee via Space Needle Facebook page

Arriving at Atmos
The top of the Needle is now referred to as Atmos and includes three levels: the 500-foot observation level (with the world’s first revolving glass floor), the 510-foot Ring Level (with less spectacular but still important new restrooms) and the 520-foot observation level (with both indoor and outdoor open-air viewing). Connecting all three is a new grand staircase. The Oculus Stairs are two half-moon shaped staircases built from steel, wood and glass. At the base of the stairs sits the Oculus, a 19 foot by 11 foot glass floor that gives a unique view of the elevators and counterweights.

photo: Marcy Grantor

Skyrising Selfies
On the 520-foot level you’ll immediately notice one of the biggest changes to the Needle. Gone is the metal security “cage” that used to surround the Observation Deck. It has been replaced with open-air glass walls providing uninhibited 360-degree views. All around the deck you’ll find 24 glass “Skyriser” benches that lean back away from the needle. If you dare, take a seat, lean back and imagine what it would be like to be floating high above the ground (selfies are encouraged from this unique angle!). Inside the indoor observation level, you’ll find the Atmos Café offering beverages and light bites.

photo: Marcy Grantor

Around the Loupe
Located on the 500 foot level is “The Loupe” which is the world’s first and only revolving glass floor giving you amazing downward views of Seattle while also revealing the mechanics of what makes the rotating floor turn. The Loupe makes a full rotation every 45 minutes, and while two-thirds of the floor actually turns, the center third of the floor stays still. While little ones might not want to look down, you can relax knowing that the 37-ton glass floor is made from 10 layers (yep, you read that right!) of structural glass. And if that isn’t enough to settle your nerves, you will be happy to know that the Atmos Wine Bar can be found on this too. Well played, Space Needle!

photo: Space Needle

Other Features to Make Note Of
The new Space Needle comes with a few extra special touches to make your experience all the more memorable without any extra fees. These include:

1 Multiple professional digital photos including the Skyhigh Selfie and the Zoomie.

2. An interactive area that includes a digital globe and a wall of memories featuring photos through the years.

3. The Stratos Virtual Reality experience where you can feel what it would be like to bungee jump off the Needle!

photo: Melinda Wong

Be Sure to Exit Through the Gift Shop
Though you don’t have to, your visit to the Space Needle wouldn’t be complete without stopping at the Spacebase Gift Shop. Not only will you find Needle-themed souvenirs, but you’ll also find apparel, drinkware, food items, jewelry, toys, books and more. If you need a Seattle-themed gift or unique kid’s birthday present, the Spacebase Gift Shop has you covered.

photo: Mark Grantor

Climb to the Top of the Needle with Base 2 Space
During the month of September, guests can climb the 832 stairs up one of two intertwining, open-air stairwells. Why? To support the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the Space Needle Foundation. The best part? One hundred percent of the donations benefit the two organizations with close to one million dollars in funds raised annually. Keep an eye on their website for 2019 climb dates!

photo: Mark Grantor

Good to know: To be eligible for a trophy, you’ll need to be signed up as an Elite Climber (one that can run a 5-6 minute mile), a Runner (able to complete a 7-10 minute mile) or a Trotter (able to complete a mile within 11-15 minutes). All participants must be 8 years old or older and all kids ages 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult. The registration fee for adults is $75 plus a $175 fundraising minimum and $50 plus a $100 fundraising minimum for youth ages 8-17. Register or find more information online.
