9 Gender Neutral Baby Shower Themes to Celebrate Your Surprise

Kylie Jenner is a mom––again! The Kylie Cosmetics founder announced the arrival of baby number two on a sweet Instagram post, sharing with the world that she’s also now a boy mom. The photo shared was a black and white image of big sister Stormi holding her new little brother’s hand (pass the tissues!).

Baby boy arrived on Feb. 2, 2022, the same month that Kylie’s first child celebrates her birthday as well. He is the second baby for Jenner and her partner, Travis Scott.

Unlike her pregnancy with Stormi, we uber fans got to follow along this time around as Jenner shared the news she was expecting back in September with a sweet video montage. Since then, anyone could check in on how the mama-to-be was doing, with plenty of casual moments plus the glamorous photos shoots we’ve come to know from Kylie.

Kylie addressed her decision to keep her first pregnancy private, telling Vogue Australia, “I just knew that it would be better for me, and I could enjoy the whole experience if I did it privately. I just felt like it was a sacred special moment and I wasn’t ready to share it with everybody. I just wanted to keep that to myself.” While we definitely understand her feelings, we were also more than excited that she felt safe enough to share her journey the second time around.

Congratulations to the new family of four!

Your guests will love these baby shower game ideas

When you’re planning the activities for a baby shower, you’re looking for games that are easy to learn, fun to play and not likely to make guests cringe. These games are all that and more.

ABC Baby Book

cuppacocoa

The prize for this game goes to the mom-to-be, who gets a homemade alphabet book crafted by her favorite people. Let guests choose what image to draw for each letter or, if you think they'll need inspiration, choose a theme for the book (it can even match the shower theme). Stop by the cuppacocoa blog for a free template and full instructions.

Baby Guess Who?

iStock

Maximum fun with minimal prep work: Guests email you baby photos of themselves prior to the shower, and you print them up, number each one, and create a display on a wall or table. Print out numbered sheets where guests can try to match each guest to the pictures.

Year One Bucket List

Keababies

There are so many memorable things parents can do with their baby in the first year, but with baby brain, it can be hard to remember to do them. Have guests write down one first-year bucket-list item (from blowing. bubbles to visiting the zoo) on a note card and drop it into a basket for the mom-to-be to take home. Bonus points for using a diaper caddy as the basket, like the one above from Keababies, since the mom will find this invaluable for diaper changes.

Clothing Decorating Station

Lovely Indeed

Fill up baby’s wardrobe with customized outfits using blogger Lovely Indeed’s decorating station idea. Provide solid-colored baby clothes in a variety of styles and sizes, fabric markers, iron-on designs, and an iron. Your friends will have fun designing these tiny outfits, and Mom will get one-of-a-kind baby gear made with love.

Wishes for Baby

Art Bar

Ask every guest to share a wish for the new baby in this sweet idea from the Art Bar blog. Use pastel card stock and the blog’s free animal templates, or use scrapbook paper and your own shapes for the cards. Hang ribbon and small clothespins on your wall so guests can post their wishes for everyone to read.

Candy in a Baby Bottle

Sharon McCutcheon via Pexels

For a super easy game, fill baby bottles with a set amount of small candies, like sprinkles. Place a bottle at each table with a note that asks guests to guess the number of candies. This game doubles as an icebreaker as tablemates try to figure out the exact number. At each table, the person with the closest guess can win the candy.

Play-Doh Creations

Joao Cachapa via Pixabay

Give each guest a container of Play-Doh and 15 minutes to sculpt a baby-related masterpiece (like a baby, pacifier or bottle). Let the mother-to-be pick her favorite to win a prize.

Hand-Crafted Baby Blocks

Fireflies and Mudpies

Ask shower guests to show off their artistic sides by decorating baby blocks. Provide blank wooden blocks, markers, stickers and more (Fireflies and Mudpies has instructions for making these textured blocks) and let your guests get creative. After the party, paint the blocks with a natural wood varnish for a special gift for baby.

Children's Book Quiz

iStock

For a book-loving mom-to-be, set up a quiz with trivia from classic children’s books. Or, create a fill-in-the-blank quiz with titles of children’s books. This is a good way to get guests chatting, as they remember their own childhood favorites.

Match the Socks

Cheski Sock Company

All you need to play this game are a bunch of new baby socks in different colors, patterns, and sizes and a cute laundry basket. We love the sock bundles from Cheski Sock Company, shown above. Throw the unpaired socks into the basket, set a timer, and have each guest match as many as they can in one minute. Mom-to-be gets a laundry basket and a great sock collection for baby, and your friends get a workout and some laughs.

Baby Shower DIY Craft Projects Guests Will Love

You’ve spent months researching what products you’ll need for a new baby, but what about you, mama? Bodily takes the guesswork out of managing childbirth recovery and your postpartum needs with smart, well-made products for new moms. Read on for functional and stylish solutions for all your birth recovery and breastfeeding needs.

What It Is

From comfortable bras and underwear to breastfeeding essentials to well-curated kits of post-childbirth must-haves, Bodily has your new-mom body covered. Bodily works with medical professionals and lactation consultants to choose effective postpartum products that help women as they recover from childbirth and pregnancy. Their extensive research has led to design-led products that support women during this life-changing time.

Bodily bras are made for changing postpartum bodies. The nursing and pumping bras, like the Do Anything Bra (above), were designed with lactation consultants and mindful of research for optimal breast health to be both supportive and comfortable. Bodily’s bra collection has bras to wear from maternity to all stages of breastfeeding. Some of them even make awesome sleep bras!

Now let's talk panties. The All-in Panty (above) has a high waist for C-section mamas and is super soft, stretchy and supportive enough to change with your fluctuating body postpartum. And yes, Bodily also sells mesh undies that are a big step above hospital mesh panties.

For childbirth and the days following, the company sells a peri wash bottle, belly band, cozy socks and more. And for breastfeeding, you can get non-slip breast pads (low profile or full coverage), nipple balm, cooling gel pads, nipple shields, cute nursing tops and even a shirtdress. There's even a spicy turmeric latte, caffeine-free and loaded with antioxidants, that's available on its own as well as in the kits for when you need a decadent treat.

What's in the Kits

Each of the kits support different post-birth needs, so it's easy to find exactly the care you want.

Scheduled C-Section Birth Box ($145) includes a belly band and high-waisted underwear to support abdominal recovery, guidebooks on postpartum recovery, and childbirth recovery essentials: maxi pads, mesh undies and stool softener. It also contains breastfeeding items (breast pads, nipple shield and nipple balm), cozy socks and a packet of oatmeal.

Care for Birth Box ($105) includes grippy socks for the hospital and items for vaginal recovery, such as maxi pads, mesh undies and stool softener, a peri wash bottle and inflatable cushion to sit on.

B-Kit ($90) is the ultimate breastfeeding starter kit, with a nursing bra, breast pads and nipple balm.

V-Kit ($95), for vaginal birth recovery, contains a sitz tub with tote bag, peri spray and sitz salts, maxi pads, undies, stool softener, and guidebooks for you and your partner or other supporter on postpartum recovery.

C-Kit ($90) is for C-section recoveries. It includes a belly band and high-waisted underwear to support abdominal recovery, guidebooks on postpartum recovery, and childbirth recovery essentials: maxi pads, mesh undies and stool softener.

Care for Miscarriage Box ($90) supports women with tools to memorialize the loss, nurture themselves, and process the experience. The kit contains two books, a superfood-rich beverage and remembrance bracelets.

Care for Stillbirth Box ($115) contains books, remembrance bracelets, and practical products to aid in the body's physical recovery after stillbirth.

Why We Love It

We all see the Instagram photos of new moms smiling with perfect hair and makeup, but what did it take to get there? If you deliver in a hospital, you may be given some mesh undies and a squeeze bottle to take home, but nobody really spells out what postpartum physical changes and health issues to expect or how to deal with them (hello, bleeding and hemorrhoids). Bodily delivers all that and more.

In addition to postpartum essentials, the website has tons of research-led, evidence-based articles and timelines on what to expect from your fluctuating body and with breastfeeding. You get clear answers and products that actually work, so you can get back to what you want to be doing: caring for your baby. And for those who were pregnant but suffered a loss, the website now has a Pregnancy Loss Resource Hub, with research-backed information to support families in need.

Seattle

For a more active vacation, head to our neighbors to the north to take in some culture. If you haven’t been to Seattle lately (or ever), do the tourist thing and hit up Pike Place Market and Seattle Center with the Space Needle and MoPOP. If that’s old hat to you, explore the Old Ballard neighborhood from the comfort of the Hotel Ballard. While you're there, don’t miss out on the Mexican food at La Carta de Oaxaca, and get the molé.

Mt. Rainer

Just a three hour drive away, Mt. Rainier offers parents-to-be opportunities to take in the beauty of winter, and engage in winter activities that are easy on the expecting. The mountain offers spectacular views that you won’t find anywhere else, and if you leave your cozy cabin you are sure to run into wildlife including dear and elk. If mom is up for it, ranger guided snow shoe walks are available inside Mt. Rainer National Park. If you are looking for something a little more gentle and relaxing, a ride on the Mt. Rainier Gondola will take you over 2,400 vertical feet to the summit where you will find expansive views of Mt. Rainier and the beautiful Cascade Range. While you are there, you'll want to grab a bite at the Summit House, Washington’s highest elevation restaurant serving locally sourced and Northwest inspired cuisine. For a romantic base camp, stay at one of Three Bears Lodge  seven cabins just outside the year-round Paradise entrance to the national park in Ashford. They are private, luxurious, and fully stocked with everything you need.

Columbia Gorge

The Columbia Gorge is perfect for a babymoon because it's gorgeous year round and because of its close proximity to your Portland birthing center. Portlanders usually make this a day trip, but a longer stay will allow you and your sweetie to really relax and take in the natural splendor. Skamania Lodge has long been a favorite of Portlanders, as it’s only 45 minutes away from town, but has both a lovely natural setting and plenty of things to do. You may not feel up to ziplining this time around, but there are plenty of other things to do: a ride on the Sternwheeler, a photography tour, local waterfalls, or a mani/pedi at the spa. Or, get in a bucket at the driving range, or leave that up to your partner to tackle while you're getting those toes you haven't seen in awhile fancied up.

It also has a hot tub and sauna and luxurious rooms to relax in. If mom is up for it, it's a great basecamp for  a short snowshoeing adventure. You can rent snow shoes right there, go on a trek and then come back to the lodge to warm up and enjoy the game room or a light read from the lending library. There are multiple onsite dining options including the Cascade Dining Room and Rams Head Bar & Restaurant. You can stay for days without leaving the lodge, except for gentle treks in the snow.

Bend

Old Mill District via Yelp

Choose your adventure: Stay outside of town at a vacation rental to enjoy the high desert air and mountain views, or stay in town to check out arts, food, and entertainment. The High Desert Museum, just south of town, doesn't just have historical exhibits, but also houses native animals like a bobcat, lizards, and birds of prey. In town, you’ll also find a few spas that offer prenatal massage, like the Jinsei Spa, which also offers couples’ massage if you’re so inclined. Dads-to-be get stressed, too! Stay at the Oxford Hotel in downtown Bend. Not only are the rooms extra luxurious, amazing restaurants and shops are all in walking distance (even for tired, pregnant feet). And if you are too tired to make you way out for dinner, the Oxford has a stunning restaurant called Roam that offers delectable dishes on site.

This gorgeous road trip will make you feel like you're a world away with the old-fashioned storefronts, lots of shopping and the stunning beauty of the surrounding area. For the most relaxing and romantic stay, book a room at Five Pines Lodge. You can stay at the grand lodge which is a blend of modern and rustic architecture and features a 30-foot rock fireplace, or in one of the cozy cabins located amidst a sprawling pine forest. While shopping is just steps away, mom might prefer to indulge Five Pine's Shibui Spa offerings or take in a flick at Sisters Movie House which is also located on the Five Pine Campus. Newport

While Cannon Beach trades in tourism, art and postcard-perfect views of Haystack Rock, Newport has a bit more hustle and bustle, with its touristy Mariner Square (with Ripley’s Believe it or Not, Waxworks, and Oregon Undersea Gardens), busy Bayfront district serving the busiest fishing harbor in the state, lighthouses, and the Oregon Coast Aquarium. If you’re feeling up to crabbing or boating (those of you with stable stomachs and solid balance), the Embarcadero Resort has a marina, private crabbing dock and crab pot rentals. If you’d prefer to take it easy, enjoy the harbor view and floating in the resort's salt water pool. Make the Embarcadero Resort your basecamp for your getaway. For the Outdoor Enthusiast: City Bonfires

how to host a bonfire party
City Bonfires

When two Maryland Dads unexpectedly found themselves home with their children once their jobs took a hit from pandemic-related closures they knew it was time to get creative. Chris McCasland, a sports and concert industry broker and restaurateur, and Michael Opalski, a senior restaurant industry salesman, wasted little time learning new skills. They put their heads together and  founded City Bonfires, a portable, reusable mini bonfire that you can take on all of your outdoor adventures or trips to your backyard. These small bonfires, created from a non-toxic soy wax, are perfect for making s’mores even if you don't own a firepit. Because they are made in Maryland each purchase helps support multiple local families. And their pint-sized packaging makes them the perfect fit for stockings!

A babymoon is the perfect way to relax and reconnect with your partner before having to tackle sleepless nights, diaper changes and bottles. While there is no one right way to babymoon, there are some things every mom-to-be should consider when planning a pre-baby getaway. Read on for tips on how to choose when and where to go and what to pack. Can’t travel? We have you covered with great ideas for babymoon staycations.

1. Choose the Right Time
Timing is key when it comes to planning a fun and relaxing babymoon. Most obstetricians think the best time to travel is between 14 and 28 weeks of pregnancy. This is the ideal time to plan a babymoon because the fatigue and nausea of the first trimester will have passed but the discomfort many moms-to-be experience in the third trimester will not have set in yet. Added bonus: Planning a trip for the second trimester will also give you something to look forward to when you're struggling through the worst of those early pregnancy symptoms.

2. Find the Perfect Destination
With months of sleepless nights ahead, you'll want a destination that offers plenty of opportunities to relax. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has plenty of advice about how to stay safe on cruise ships, airplanes and during international travel, so nearly everything is on the table for expectant moms. If you have any concerns about your health and your baby's, select a destination that is not more than a few hours from your doctor or a large hospital capable of handling pregnancy complications. Consider your pregnancy symptoms as well. Even if you loved cruising before becoming pregnant, if you tend to get nauseated on the water, you may want to avoid any activity that could cause sea sickness.

3. Set Your Budget
Babies are expensive! Before getting carried away with your vacation, think about how much you can realistically spend. If the answer you come up with is "not a lot," don't worry. You can have an amazing babymoon on a budget. Consider a babymoon staycation! Look for mid-week hotel specials in your town or find a spa that gives prenatal massages and book a couple's day there. Or, look to nearby towns that are an easy drive from where you live to keep costs down. If you already have a lot of baby necessities from an older sibling or can snag hand-me-downs, consider asking family and friends for donations toward a babymoon rather than creating a baby registry. Instead of receiving baby gear you don't need, you can request gift certificates for dinner at a restaurant on the beach, a night at a hotel or a prenatal massage in the on-site spa.

4. Get Your Doctor's Okay
Before any babymoon plans are booked, check with your OB or midwife to make sure your trip is medically approved. Then schedule a pre-trip checkup to make sure you and the baby are in good health before jetting off. Since this appointment will be close to your departure date, most of your vacation plans will be set. That means it's a good opportunity to ask any questions you have about your destination, such as whether certain local foods are safe to eat or how to avoid Zika virus. Get the okay for any location-specific activities, like rock climbing or long hikes. This appointment is also a good time to ask travel-related questions, such as how often you should get up to walk during a flight or where to place your seatbelt for a long car ride. Pro tip: Some airlines and cruise ships have restrictions on when pregnant women can travel, so you can ask your doctor for a letter confirming your week of pregnancy at this appointment.

5. Pack Wisely
Stick to the essentials when packing so you won't have a mountain of laundry to do when you get home. You also want to be comfortable and cute! A babymoon is the perfect opportunity to refresh your wardrobe and get some basics to take you through the rest of your pregnancy and postpartum. A cute pair of Allbirds slip-ons will help ensure you are able to walk around in comfort on your babymoon. As a bonus, you will have a great pair of shoes you can put on hands-free once your bebe arrives. You can also justify picking up some new clothes to fit your growing belly, like a lounge dress or stretchy leggings from KyteBaby.

6. Plan Some Quality Couples Time
A babymoon is a great chance to strengthen your relationship with your partner. Remember what brought you together and enjoy each other's company as a couple before life changes. Take some time to talk about what you are looking forward to and what you are worrying about. If you need some ideas, The Adventure Challenge: Couples Edition is a fun scratch-off book full of ideas to make sure you don't always have the same old date night while on your babymoon.

7. Babymoon at Home
Whether you have to stay close to home because you are on bed rest or because every extra penny is going to the baby, you can still have a great at-home babymoon. Treat your babymoon at home the same as you would if you were going out of town. Set an out-of-office auto-response for email and turn your ringer off. Plan to spend a long weekend (or more) doing nothing but pampering yourself, hanging with your main squeeze, eating all your favorite foods and binge-watching whatever you like. A long bath with candles and a weekend of lounging around can do wonders to help you reset and get ready for the next phase of pregnancy—and your baby!

How to Stay Connected to Your Partner Post-Baby

8 New Parent Date Night Ideas Right at Home

7 Hotel Hacks to Make Your Room Baby-Friendly

I just spent a few minutes looking at my “Today in the Past” photos of Facebook, including a few pics of my husband and me with our newborn daughter, who is 10 now.

Oh, I’d give anything to go back to those days…Actually, wait. That was REALLY hard, and there were a lot of tears, exhaustion, and anxiety

(Why don’t they tell you that in a diaper commercial!)

Looking back, though, I realize that this time could have been so much easier and more enjoyable if I had seen things a little differently. I wish I could go back and tell my younger self what I know now.

1. Listen to your instincts and intuition. While I was super confident before having the baby in my ability to care for her, I quickly lost that confidence when I was holding a crying baby who wouldn’t latch and everyone kept telling me what I should or shouldn’t do. I wish I had had the guts to tell them what I felt in my heart so strongly. In hindsight, I knew what was best for me and my daughter, but I didn’t trust myself enough.

I’m not saying to ignore medical professionals or the well-meant advice of other moms, but voice your own thoughts first and make sure you are heard and seen. Because, after all, mother does know best.

2. A crying baby is not the end of the world. Although, truth be told, it can sure seem that way sometimes. Most of the time, though, they’re just trying to get what they need. So, be patient and calmly offer what she might need. Food, a clean diaper, sleep, connection, and love. Nine times out of ten, that will do the trick. And if not, keep calm and seek help.

Sometimes, there can be other issues that are causing the crying. Our daughter had reflux, so there was a lot of crying, very little sleep, and as a result, an overtired baby, who was very hard to settle. This is all a hindsight 20/20 thing, though, because back then, I took me weeks to figure it out, and I put some of the pieces together months later.

3. The sun will rise again. I felt the most lonely during nighttime when I was walking round and round in my room with a crying baby who wouldn’t fall asleep despite my best efforts. She was overtired, and so was I. I think those were the times I cried the most in the beginning. What I’d love to whisper in my past self’s ear is that this too shall pass. After this night, there will be daylight again. The baby will sleep eventually and in a few weeks, she’ll have figured out this night and day thing.

4. It’s just a phase. “This too shall pass,” as my Dad used to say. Every mom has probably heard this tip and given it to another mom, but while we’re in the trenches, it can be hard to remember. Everything is a phase with little ones. So, sometimes, the best you can do is just ride out the waves. And, for better or worse, it all really does fly by.

5. Know what to expect. I often wish I’d done more research on what to expect in the newborn phase (or even past that). Obviously, you can’t know everything, and every baby is different, but what I learned is that doing a little reading upfront can ease a lot of fears and help figure out what’s not working before it drives you insane.

6. Do things that make you feel normal. I struggled for the longest time to consolidate my past identity with my new identity as a mom. To be honest, I still do sometimes, but what has helped immensely is writing down when I feel most like myself and doing those things as often as possible.

Also, create routines. I found that routine activities made me feel happy and gave me a sense of control.

7. Ask for help. Can’t stress this enough! It does take a village to raise a kid, so don’t think you have to do it all by yourself. Ask your spouse, your family, or your friends to help out. It could be as simple as having someone to talk to when you’re covered in baby spit-up and in desperate need of a grown-up conversation. Or it could be a couple of hours of sleep or time to yourself. Have a friend do grocery shopping for you, or ask your spouse to take care of laundry.

8. Relax into it. This is definitely the hardest to do but makes all the difference. I still haven’t mastered it years into motherhood, but those times when I’ve managed to slow down, breathe and relax into it have been the best. Even when it happens as you’re trying to put your baby down and it’s been an hour already. Especially then.

9. Loosen up and let go. Bruce Lee once said, “Be like water, my friend.” In other words, go with the flow. You’re bound to have spit-up on your shirt 24/7, a messy home, crazy-lady hair, and a never-ending pile of laundry.

You could either stress about it or just let it go. Don’t worry, one day you’ll discover you’ve worn the same shirt for the whole day. You will get back on track with your laundry. You most definitely will find time for personal care again. One day, I promise!

So, if you’re down in the trenches right now, or about to become a new mom for the first (or third) time, I hope this post offered some support, understanding, and most importantly, a gentle reminder that the hard parts will pass, and the joy will only grow.

You’ve got this, mama!

I'm Missy, a mother of three and a middle school drama teacher at a private school. I'm obsessed with my Vizsla (dog), traveling, and the musical Hamilton. I also enjoy writing and sharing fun parenting stories, which is what brought me here.
