My, how far we’ve come! After a year of things being closed, it was exciting to see so many family-friendly places find a home in Seattle. New playgrounds, boat tours, even Seattle’s very own Iceplex have kept families busy and bonding in 2021. Here are our favorite new spots where families can play!

Kraken Community Iceplex

Kraken Community Iceplex

Kraken fever has hit Seattle, and one of the coolest places around to catch it is at the new Kraken Community Iceplex. Not only is a great place for kids (and parents) to learn to skate or play ice hockey, but it’s the hot new place to go ice skating this season. We love that it’s got lots of perks beyond the rink, like the newly opened 32 Bar & Grill and a Starbucks ready to serve hot drinks to you and the kids after you’ve scooped the rink loop. It’s also an easy spot to throw a birthday bash or even watch the Kraken play. And if you time it right, you might be lucky enough to catch the pros as they make their way off the ice after practice.

HOCKEY: Faster Than Ever at PacSci

Another upside of all this hockey fever is PacSci’s new exhibit, HOCKEY: Faster Than Ever. It opened this fall and is scheduled to be on exhibit through February 27, 2022. In it, kids and families can explore how hockey has changed through the ages and try their luck defending the goal in interactive exhibits. Better work on your slap shot before heading over! The “Hockey Science Lab” is where visitors of all ages can test their speed, balance and reaction time on the ice. Got a rainy day? Then you’ve got what you need to visit. Please note: PacSci’s other exhibits remain closed for now.

Salish Sea Tours

Salish Sea Tours

It’s hard not to fall in love with the Sound and Elliot Bay when you live in Seattle. Whether you enjoy it from the shores of Alki, the hills of Queen Anne or from the top of the Great Wheel, there’s nothing better than ferry crossings and beach combing. 2021 saw the launch of Salish Sea Tours, the newest way to cruise the Bay and learn about the history of Seattle, with a focus on its Indigenous people. Sailing out of Miner’s Landing, the touring company is Native-owned, with a fleet of two, 93-foot Native-designed catamarans, creatively called Orca 1 and Orca 2. Set sail for a captivating one-hour tour (don’t worry, they’ve got indoor seating that’s perfect for our chilly and wet winter days!) you won’t soon forget. It’s a unique and exciting addition to Pier 57, and one that is perfect for even the tiniest seafarers.

Da Vinci—Inventions at MOHAI

Genius lurks around every corner at MOHAI’s Da Vinci—Inventions exhibit that opened this summer. The exhibit features the work of Grande Experience, a group of Italian artisans who brought da Vinci’s drawings to life by scouring over 6,000 pages of his personal codices, written in mirror-image. Their hard work allows you and the kids to explore the fantastic displays that range from costumes and musical instruments, to flying machines and pop-up bridges for foot soldiers that totally work. Each intriguing invention will have your kids wondering about design and imagination and the intersection of art and science. If you haven’t made your way over to SLU recently, there’s still time to catch this fascinating exhibit before it leaves on March 13, 2022.

Getaway Skagit Valley

If tech overload has been a side effect of the pandemic for your family, book some time at Seattle’s new vacation spot—Getaway Skagit Valley. It takes everything families love about camping—being outside, spending time together and cooking over a campfire—and combines it with a philosophy of rest, relaxation and rejuvenation that allows you to get away from it all—including screens. As a matter of fact, there’s no cell or WiFi coverage anywhere near Getaway’s Outposts, which frees you and the kids up for those low-tech activities you’re always trying to do more of anyway, like reading, journaling and playing games. Getaway’s Skagit Valley location makes it an easy launching pad for outdoor adventure too—whether you want to tiptoe through the tulips in April, explore Deception Pass in the summer or chill in the wilderness this winter.

Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience

This much-anticipated immersive art experience opened this fall, and families have been lining up since day one to see it. Between the 360-Immersive room, the interactive art station and the VR experience that lets you experience a day in the life of the artist, it’s a hit for kids of all ages. They’ll love the bold, bright scenes of Van Gogh’s paintings that come to life in the immersive room. Crabs crawl, wagons roll and paintings dissolve from one scene to the next, as the narrator explores Van Gogh’s life and work. The VR experience is definitely best for older kids, but everyone in the fam can get in on coloring a Van Gogh painting and displaying it for all to see. The exhibit will be in Seattle through the spring, at least.

Fantastic New Playgrounds

New playgrounds are always worth celebrating, and 2021 saw a whole slew of new places where kids can slide, swing and spin. The award-winning Juanita Beach Park and the Gene Coulon Memorial Beach playground are both worth a visit if you haven’t been yet. Is there really any better way to play than by the beach? Sunset Neighborhood Park in Renton and the new West Fenwick playground in Kent (pictured) also top our list. The climbing structures at Sunset Park are not for the faint of heart, and West Fenwick’s colorful, game-board-style playground will enthrall players of all ages. Pacific Catch

Pacific Catch/Anna Marks

With a brand-new location that just opened up in Santa Clara, you have even more options for dining out with your family at Pacific Catch. Offering primarily seafood options, your family will love the fish tacos, lobster roll with fresh avocado and the family-style fresh catch entrees that take the guesswork out of what to order for dinner. The kids menu options include kid-sized versions of the popular fish and chips, coconut shrimp and California rolls. Non-fish eaters can opt for chicken strips or a teriyaki bowl with chicken as the protein. The Santa Clara location has ample outdoor seating and a fire pit for when the temps dip.

Jack's Restaurant

Kate Loweth

With four Bay Area locations to choose from, there's likely a Jack's Restaurant near you. We love it for a family night out as the restaurants are totally family-friendly and the menu is full of food that kids will love. Take the kids on a trip to the Mediterranean with the sampler as a starter (pitas, hummus and tzatziki). Lamb meatballs are terrific for sharing along with the garlic oregano fries. Skip the traditional kid's menu choices and share a plate of the lamb chops that are perfectly sized for picking up and eating with your hands. To keep the Greek flavor going until the end, opt for the galaktoboureko for dessert. Layers of sweet phyllo pastry, semolina custard and apricot-orange blossom preserve will be just the bite you need to round out the meal.

August (1) Five

The deep aromas of Indian food welcome you as soon as you walk in the door at August (1) Five in San Francisco. This modern take on Indian food is particularly kid friendly at brunch time when they offer a rotating menu of options like French toast topped with bananas and butterscotch and arancini. Both Chef Manish and owner Hetal's own children love the Poori Aloo, a potato stew, and the Veggie Appam, a savory, gluten-free pancake. It's location is ideal as it is right down the street from the War Memorial Opera House and open for dining before or after Nutcracker and SF Symphony performances.

The popular food truck serving Indian street food with a twist has several brick and mortar locations all over the Bay Area, and the décor is enough to want to hang out with the whole family. The Bunty Burrito with paneer and Naan Pizza are top choices that are an instant hit, while grown-ups can snack on Sexy Fries and samosas. Can’t stay? Mendocino Farms

Kate Loweth

This LA-based deli (and more!) is all the rage since it opened up its first location in Campbell and second in San Jose. The kids' menu is pretty standard, but the PB&J will probably be the best version of this sandwich you’ll ever have. Get your little ones to try something new like the beet side salad—you can grab samples of whatever sides look appetizing while you wait to pay for your meal. Aside from the delish menu, these people know what it’s like to eat out with kids by designing a kid’s corner complete with a mini table, chalk wall and Connect Four game. With the goal of building a place that the community can gather around, Mendocino Farms just might hit the spot. Read more here

Gracias Madre

With a restaurant named “Thanks Mom” in Spanish and a dedication to love of the earth and the families that live in it, you almost have to visit, and it’ll be so worth it. This Mission Mexican joint is 100% plant-based, non-GMO and authentic. The interior décor takes you to a village in Mexico, while the food (looking at you guacamole) snagged some rave reviews from the Zagat national food reviewers. Try the quesadillas with pumpkin seed salsa and flautas with sweet potato and caramelized onions for a delicious take on vegan Mexican fare.

Mama bees looking for a place that doesn’t scream kid friendly but so is, look no further than Bumble. Its chic décor makes it an ideal spot for a mama’s brunch, while the playroom (available for a fee) and healthy kids' menu makes it all sorts of OK to bring the little ones. From special rides to off-menu treats, these Disneyland secrets will up the ante on your next visit. Scroll down to see them all.

1. You Can Ride Mary Poppins' Horse on King Arthur's Carousel

In 2008, the legendary Julie Andrews was honored with the dedication of "Jingles" the horse, a replica to the one she rode in the iconic Mary Poppins movie. The horse is adorned with bells, like in the movie, umbrellas, and even a silhouette of the world's most famous nanny herself.

2. Hidden Mickeys

It’s hard to avoid seeing Mickey Mouse everywhere you turn in Disneyland, but did you know that there are a few Mickeys that are intentionally hidden? Disney theme park designers (Imagineers) left behind a treasure trove of hidden Mickeys. Created in the famous mouse’s image, and worked into the overall design of an attraction, there’s no definitive number on just how many Mickeys can be found. There are, however, dozens of blogs and even books dedicated to the subject. Print out a list, like the ones found at Hidden Mickeys Guide, and challenge your family to find as many as you can during your next trip—it’s a fun way to pass the time while you wait in those long lines.

3. Club 33

If you’ve ever strolled around New Orleans Square just outside of the exit from Pirates of the Caribbean you might have noticed a green door with a small placard that reads “33”. This spot is the holy grail of Disneyland secrets: an exclusive club that only a select few are members of. Becoming a member isn’t easy, it's rumoured you have to drop anywhere from $25,000 - $100,000 to start plus an annual fee of $12,000, oh and you’ll have to clear the waiting list, which is rumored to be years long. If you’re lucky enough to know a member you can also join them as a guest. So what’s so special about Club 33? In addition to serving up five-and six-course meals that include dishes like rack of lamb and lobster paella, it is also the only place in the park where you can enjoy an adult beverage from the top-shelf bar. You can also enjoy character visits at the club, valet parking at the Grand Californian, and access to 1901, a private lounge at California Adventure.

4. Morse Code Message at New Orleans Square Train Station

Stop by the New Orleans Square Train Station and you’ll no doubt hear a mysterious morse code message being clacked out from the Telegraph Office next door. The message is actually part of Walt Disney’s original dedication he gave on Disneyland’s opening day. It reads: “TO ALL WHO COME TO DISNEYLAND, WELCOME. HERE AGE RELIVES FOND MEMORIES OF THE PAST, AND HERE YOUTH MAY SAVOR THE CHALLENGE AND PROMISE OF THE FUTURE."

5. Behold the Evil Queen

Mirror, mirror on the wall, the Evil Queen’s in the window, ya’ll (But only if you’re lucky enough to catch her.)! While you and your family are wandering through Fantasyland, be sure to visit Snow White’s Scary Adventures. In the window high above the attraction, the Evil Queen peers out from behind the curtains at random times throughout the day to survey her realm and judge tourists wearing fanny packs. Give the kids your phone and see if they can snap a picture of her evilness!

6. The Lilly Belle

Named for Walt’s beloved wife, Lillian Disney, the Lilly Belle is the Presidential Parlor car that trails the back of the Disneyland Railroad steam engine, where the caboose would be. Decorated in mahogany wood paneling and antique furniture and accents, the secret car was once only accessible to members of Club 33 and the few visitors who knew to request a special ride first thing in the morning. Now visitors can reserve a ride aboard the Lilly Belle by booking a two-hour train-themed tour. For $89 per adult, you’ll be loaded up with a drink and a donut first thing in the morning before heading out on a guided walking tour that ends with a grand circle ride aboard the Lilly Belle.

7. Dominguez Tree at Adventureland’s Jungle Cruise

High above the Jungle Cruise in Adventureland, stands a prominent palm tree that predates the existence of Disneyland. It belonged to the Dominguez Family who sold their Anaheim farm to Walt Disney so Disneyland could be built. The Dominguez’s one request was that their beloved family tree, which had been a wedding gift, remain untouched as part of the park. The sentimental man he was, Mr. Disney agreed, and the tree still stands tall today. In fact, one of the youngest members of the family, Ron Dominguez, worked his way up the Disneyland ranks, eventually becoming the park’s president.  Can you find the tree?

8. Secret Menu

The delicious eats are a major part of the fun of a Disneyland visit, but did you know there are even more off-menu treats you can indulge in? You just have to know what to ask for. Some of our favorite selections include the Ice Cream Nachos at the Golden Horseshoe, which is a huge shareable feast of three ice cream scoops on top of waffle cone “chips” topped with hot fudge, whipped cream and chocolate chips. If you prefer something a little savory and are a fan of In N’ Out’s animal style burger, order a Galactic Style Burger at the Tomorrowland Grill to get it topped with French fries, bacon cheese, grilled onions and Thousand Island dressing.

9. Walt's Secret Apartment

If you’ve built a place as magical as Disneyland, you’ll never want to leave, which is probably why Walt Disney built himself an apartment where he could live, work and enjoy the view of the amazing place he created. The entire family used the apartment, and if there were special visitors in the park, Walt and his wife would invite them up for a visit. While no one lives in the apartment today, it acts as a time capsule of sorts, preserved as Walt left it. If you look up at the windows above the Main Street firestation you can see a lamp perpetually glowing.

10. Walk in Walt’s Disneyland Footsteps Tour

Want to get a peek inside that wondrous apartment and an insider’s look at the entire park? Book a “Walk in Walt’s Disneyland Footsteps Tour” and get up close with parts of the park unavailable to most guests. Your knowledgeable guide will treat you to one incredible story after the other as you visit Walt Disney’s private apartment and ride some of the most classic attractions that have been around since the beginning. When the tour is over, you’ll be treated to an exclusive lunch on Main Street U.S.A. For advanced reservations, call 714-781-TOUR.

11. Beyond Tacos & Turkey Legs—Disneyland’s Vegan Options

One of the best things about a day at Disneyland is the delicious snack fest you and the kids get to indulge in. From pizza and chimichangas to corn dogs and giant turkey legs, it’s a foodie fairytale come true. And vegans or guests just looking for veggie options need not feel left out of the fun. A myriad of restaurants throughout the park offer a variety of vegan options to thrill any palate—you just have to know where to go. Here’s a great rundown to bring to the park. We like the vegan jambalaya at Cafe Orleans, and kids will devour the Veggie Tater Bake at Flo’s V-8 Cafe.

12. Front of the Monorail

Riding the monorail is a unique experience in itself, but for something unforgettable try nabbing a seat in the front with the conductor. While the monorail is mainly used as a mode of transport between the park and hotels, even guests not staying at the Disneyland Resort are welcome to take a ride. Just get on at the Tomorrowland station where you can take a full round-trip ride. When you arrive at the head of the line, put on your best smiles and ask very nicely if you can sit up front. If by chance someone has beat you to the punch, you can ask to wait for the next monorail car. If you’d prefer the view from the back, you can also request a seat in the rear pod. Either seat will give you an incredible unobstructed view of the park below.

13. Pick Up Baby Essentials You Left at Home

Remembering all the essentials you need to bring from home for a trip to Disneyland is a wild ride in itself, especially with a baby in tow. Being the perfect parent you are, you think you have everything covered until the moment when ...  “No diapers?!” Luckily, Disneyland’s got your (and your baby's) behind.  Visit the Baby Care Center near first aid on Main Street, U.S.A. to purchase any important items you may have forgotten—diapers, formula, bottles, wipes, pacifiers—the works. You can also nurse or feed your tot in peace at this quiet spot.

14. Park Bench Where Disneyland Was Born

“The Disneyland Story presenting Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln” attraction is always a thrill for guests who stop by the Main Street Opera House. But the coolest of cool is getting to see the actual park bench where Walt Disney first conceived the idea of Disneyland. While watching his two daughters ride the Griffith Park Merry-Go-Round, Mr. Disney sat and contemplated a magical place where parents and kiddos could experience unimaginable fun together. Yep, it all started right here.  Have your kids take a seat, and see if they get inspired…

15. Magic Moments

A little kindness goes a long way, and if a park employee happens to catch you being especially kind and positive, they might just reward you with a little fairy dust. According to a former Disneyland employee, park employees have the power to grant you with "spur of the moment acts of kindness.” Those gifts could be anything from front-of-the-line passes to free ice cream cones.

16. Best Place & Time to Watch Fantasmic

The fact that your tots have reminded you a billion times today about tonight’s Fantasmic Show gives you a sixth sense they may like to attend (You’re very intuitive that way.). Though most guests vie for a viewing spot in the center, the show was actually designed to be watched from all around the Rivers of America. So we suggest snagging a secret spot near the Haunted Mansion where there’s a lot more breathing room. Also, consider doing the second Fantasmic show instead of the first. You can hit the rides with no lines as everyone catches show #1, and then park empties out a bit for the second show. You’re welcome.

When the winter months finally arrive and the temperature drops lower than comfortable, Australia is the place you want to be. With winter raging on everywhere else, Australians are celebrating their New Year in their swimwear, on the beach, grilling some meat on the barbie in the process.

Aside from being the perfect place to enjoy the sunny weather and lounge on its expansive beaches, Australia is also the place where you can have wholesome family fun. Even though the continent is too rich and diverse to be experienced in a single trip, there are several destinations you simply can’t miss.

Tour Sydney on a ferry boat.

When you think of Australia, the iconic city of Sydney is most likely the first thing that comes to mind. And rightfully so, because this expansive urban gem is not only the country’s cultural hub, but also a true architectural wonderland. In order to experience Sydney from a different perspective, though, you should head over to the Sydney Harbour.

Running around the Harbour trying to keep your kids in line is fun on its own, but the most memorable experience comes in the form of a boat tour around the city. The ferry will take you through all the mesmerizing sights such as the Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, all the way to Fort Denison and Cockatoo Island. This is the perfect place to disembark for a relaxing family picnic. If you’re up for an extended excursion, take the ferry to Darling Harbour where you can visit amazing kid-friendly places such as the Wild Life Sydney Zoo, the Darling Quarter Playground and the Sydney Sea Life Aquarium.

Drive across Tasmania.

Out of all the scenic drives and mesmerizing natural oases in Australia, the southern island of Tasmania might just be the most exciting road trip destination for a family. Even though it’s considered to be one of the smaller regions, you will still need a car in order to get around the island efficiently. Fortunately, Tasmania has reliable cheap car hire in almost every city so you should have no problem getting around.

And good thing too, because the packed itinerary will take you from Freycinet National Park to Coles Bay (and excellent place for kayaking), Tahune Forest where you will be scaling the treetops, and of course, Mt Wellington where you can enjoy panoramic views and even cycle down with the family. Tasmania is also famous for its ghost tours, so head over to Hobart, Launceston or Port Arthur with your kids after dark if a good spook is what they are craving.

Exploring the Top End

Over at the top end, numerous natural and urban attractions await, including the historic city of Darwin. Be wary though, Darwin and the region in general are extremely hot this time of year, so adequate sun protection and regular cool-offs are a must. The best thing to do is to go for a rejuvenating swim in the ocean throughout the day.

You can do this in the city at the Waterfront Precinct, or if you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, you can drive over to Litchfield National Park where you can have fun with the family under the waterfalls. While you’re in the region, be sure to check out the indigenous rock art at Kakadu National Park and go for a kayaking tour in Nitmiluk National Park. Top it all off with a visit to the Crocosaurus Cove back in downtown Darwin.

Experience the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef.

Travel east and you will end up in Queensland, the home of the world-renowned Great Barrier Reef. You will need to travel to the far north to experience this adventure, all the way up to Cairns or Port Douglas. From one of these ports, you can board a catamaran that will take you to one of the atolls in the inner reef, or you can embark on a whole-day trip to the outer regions.

This is the place where you want to let yourself go to the mesmerizing beauty of the colorful underwater wonderland, as you take a prolonged snorkeling tour around the reef and watch as the marine life swirls and dances around you. Truly an unforgettable experience.

Visit the theme parks in Gold Coast.

While you’re in the region (but definitely not close), you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to visit the country’s adventure central—the Gold Coast. The kids are going to love it here. On offer you have five grand theme parks, including Dreamworld, WhiteWater World, Sea World, Wet’n’Wild and Movie World.

It’s bound to be an exhaustive weekend for you, but at least the kids are going to have the time of their lives. Plus, it’s an excellent way to top off an amazing Australian adventure with your family. Don’t forget to explore the Gold Coast’s beach suburbs as well if you’re up for some whale-watching, sea-kayaking, surfing and even jet-skiing.

Even though getting to the Down Under can be an adventure unto itself, lame vacations don’t exist in Australia. Whether your family is looking for pristine beaches, cosmopolitan cities or magnificent natural scenery, you’re sure to find your perfect vacation destination Down Under.

Indeed, the main challenge for rookie visitors to Australia is choosing where to visit first! Since Australia is so vast, you need to plan ahead so you don’t waste all your vacation time in transit. Below, we’ll help you on your quest by sharing 10 of the top family holiday destinations in Australia.

Sydney

Let’s start with the obvious tourist draw: Sydney. Located along Australia’s southeastern coast, Sydney is the country’s most populated and most visited city.

It’s almost a requirement for tourists to take a ferry boat ride by the Australia’s two iconic structures: the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbor Bridge.

Once you’ve got that checked off your bucket list, get your “beach bum” on at Bondi Beach. Be sure to check online before your visit to see if there are any special Bondi Beach activities going on.

Just a few other exceptional attractions you should put in your Sydney travel itinerary include Royal Botanic Garden, the Queen Victoria Building, and Watson’s Bay. If your family loves the thrill of exploring an ultra-modern cosmopolitan city, then Sydney is your place to be.

Cairns

Sometimes called the “Gateway to the Barrier Reef,” the Queensland city Cairns is a popular tourist draw for people who love exploring Australia’s natural scenery. Thanks to the large inflow of tourists over the years, Cairns has built up an exceptional travel infrastructure complete with restaurants, cafés and resorts.

You should have no problem finding many family accommodation in Cairns nowadays. The city of Cairns itself has a very relaxed vibe and is often used as a jumping off point for other attractions in the region.

As for things to do in Cairns with your kids, definitely take a walk on Esplanade Boardwalk, book a ride on the Kuranda Scenic Railway, and explore the Cairns Botanical Garden. In addition to the Great Barrier Reef, Cairns is a great home base to explore areas like the Daintree National Park, Port Douglas, and Cape Tribulation.

Tourists flood into Cairns between June and August to take advantage of the city’s milder winter temperatures. If you’re traveling to Cairns during the summer season, you might not have to face huge crowds, but you will have to contend with increased humidity.

Hobart

Hobart is the largest city in the southeastern island state of Tasmania. Originally a penal colony, Hobart is now a huge tourist draw for artists, tourists, and even Antarctic adventurers. Fun fact: this city on the Derwent River is one of only five gateways to Antarctica.

Although Hobart may seem more like an adult tourist draw with its history and architecture, let’s go over what to do in Hobart with kids. First off, consider a visit to interesting historic areas like the Penitentiary Chapel, the Australian Army Museum Tasmania, and the old suburb known as Battery Point. If your child isn’t into history, maybe she/he will listen to a professional guide’s ghoulish tales on one of the nightly ghost tours offered in the city.

Besides the fascinating history of in Hobart, there are plenty of natural attractions here like Mount Wellington and Mount Nelson to explore. By the way, on good weather nights you could get a clear view of the Aurora Australis in the sky.

The Gold Coast

Located on Australia’s southeastern corner, the Gold Coast is the perfect location for sand, surf and sun. This city is split into four main districts, but the two most tourists stay in are called Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise.

There’s a total of 32 miles of beaches on Gold Coast and numerous opportunities to teach your kids to surf. Besides surfing, you could take part in a kayaking excursion, head out for some whale watching, or, if you feel up to it, go on a jet skiing adventure.

This Queensland city is also home to tons of exciting “worlds” like Sea World, DreamWorld, and Warner Brothers Movie World. Unfortunately there’s no Walt Disney World in Gold Coast yet…but you probably won’t miss Mickey Mouse in this fabulous city.

Kangaroo Island

No visit to Australia is complete without visiting a few kangaroos. And what better place to visit Australia’s favorite animal than on Kangaroo Island? Yes, there is actually a place named Kangaroo Island (abbreviated KI) in Australia! At 100 miles wide and 30 miles across, KI is the third-largest island in Australia.

The easiest way to get to this island is by taking a boat from the southern city of Adelaide. Besides checking out kangaroos at the KI Wildlife Park, you and your family will enjoy visiting the impressive rock formations at Flinders Chase National Park, the caves in Kelly Hill Conservation Park, and the seals at Seal Bay. Some of the other unique fauna you’re bound to encounter on KI include koalas, penguins, and platypi.

Once you’re done exploring all that KI has to offer, you can head back to the Australian mainland to explore Adelaide’s top sites like the Glenelg Beach, the German Hahndorf settlement and the Adelaide Zoo.

Brisbane

Brisbane is Australia’s third-largest city and the capital of Queensland. The best way for tourists to get the most out of their Brisbane experience is to take CityCat ferries to all their destinations. There are at least 21 CityCats on the Brisbane River that can take you anywhere you need to go in the city. This is also a great way to orient yourself to the city without having to worry about driving around.

One of the major draws in Brisbane for kids is meet and greet koalas at the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. Museums that are bound to entertain kids include the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium, the Queensland Maritime Museum, and the Queensland Museum and Sciencentre.

For families who aren’t afraid of heights, plan to scale the 941-foot summit of Mount Coot-tha and/or the Story Bridge for exceptional views of bustling Brisbane.

Canberra

There’s far more to Canberra than snooty politicians, government buildings, and historical monuments. First-time visitors are often surprised just how much green space is in Australia’s capital city. Nature lovers have many hiking paths to choose from all around Canberra’s bushlands.

For the best aerial views of the city, climb to the top of the Black Mountain Tower or the summits of Mount Pleasant and Mount Ainslie. As you descend from your climb, you must want to visit Canberra’s highly respected Australian War Memorial. As you stroll through the Parliamentary Triangle, take a few pics by Australia’s most important buildings like the Parliament House, the High Court, and the National Library.

You’ll also find the kid-friendly Questacon, an interactive museum dedicated to the sciences, in Parliamentary Square. If you can, try to visit Canberra during the Floriade Flower Festival between September and October.

Launceston

While it’s not as big as Hobart, Launceston deserves a spot on every serious traveler’s bucket list. Founded in 1805 by Tamar River, this city has plenty of charm and family-friendly attractions for an exceptional Tasmanian adventure.

The most noteworthy draw here is the lovely Cataract Gorge Reserve. Another wonderful nature reserve in the area is called the Tamar Island Wetlands. Launceston is also home to the charming Tasmania Zoo and the impressive Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery.

Finally, anyone in your family interested in vintage cars will love a stop at the National Automobile Museum of Tasmania.

Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park

Even if you haven’t heard the name “Uluru” before, you’ve probably seen this massive stone in Australian tourist booklets. Uluru, which means “Earth Mother” in the indigenous Anangu tribe’s language, is one of the most striking rock formations on the planet.

Scientists say this monolith has a height of at least 216 miles, extends into the ground 1.5 miles, and has a circumference of 6 miles.

If you have any budding geologists or anthropologists in your family, you can’t skip a visit to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Just so you know, this park in central Australia is split into the Ayers Rock Airport area, the actual park, and the Yulara resort area.

Besides Uluru, guests also get to visit Kata Tjuta, which are about 35 rock domes nearby. Today there are many tour options available for you to get the most out of your visit no matter your level of fitness. If you don’t feel up to hiking, then book a Segway, bike, and camel tour of the region.

Ballarat

About 60 miles northwest of Melbourne, Ballarat is a quaint city in Australia’s Victoria region. The key attraction here for families is the recreated town of Sovereign Hill.

As you walk through Sovereign Hill, you’ll feel as if you just walked into a time machine and came out in 1850s during the height of the Ballarat’s gold rush. Everyone visiting Sovereign Hill can’t afford to miss the 80-minute spectacular “Blood on the Southern Cross” that tells the story of the 1854 Eureka Rebellion.

You can learn even more about Ballarat’s history with the gold mining at the Gold Museum. A few other interesting spots for kids to visit include the Kryal Castle, the Ballarat Tramway Museum, and the Ballarat Wildlife Park.

Around 8.7 million international tourists visit Australia every year. Now it’s time for your family to join the millions who visit this enchanting land every year. Hopefully this list gave you a few great family holiday ideas to keep everyone in your tour group satisfied.

Look over this list again and do a bit of research before booking your flight to the Land Down Under. No matter where you choose to go, however, take this piece of advice to heart: bring extra sunscreen. Trust us, you’re going to need it.
