The soon-to-open Skagit Valley Getaway in Mount Vernon is an unbelievably easy vacay option, especially for families. Set on 69 acres, families can book one of 9 cabins that sleep 3-4 (or plan a parents-only getaway at one of the two-person cabins).
Clocking in at around an hour north of the city, families will find so many places to explore once they get there. Not only is it situated near apple picking, pumpkin patches and the colorful Tulip Festival farms (blooming in April), but it's an easy hopping off point to explore Deception Pass. Oh, the stories this Pullman Train car, the Constitution, could tell. Built in 1905, it was basically Air Force One for Presidents Harding and Wilson and when the president of the Illinois Railway Museum visited, he said it was the most well-preserved Pullman train car in the U.S. A large living room with fireplaces, a master bedroom and bathroom have been added to the original car, which consisted of 4 staterooms, an observation deck, a dining room and a galley. This is all set atop a bluff overlooking Big Rock Creek and a floodplain full of 200-year old oak trees where you might see an Eagle or two. A long day at the beach means your little one will need a comfy place to nap. Before you have visions of dragging a pack ‘n’ play over the dunes, consider digging a hole. Yes, just dig a shallow, wide hole, lay down a towel and after a little rocking, place your baby down. Be sure to angle your umbrella just right to ensure your ki has a shady spot for her snooze-fest.
Days at the beach can get pretty windy. There’s a simple way to keep the family supply of towels from blowing in the breeze; grab a few plastic bags (quart size should work) and, while setting up camp, fill the bags with sand, then seal and set on the corners of the towels and blankets. Your little plot will stay secure, and the days of flinging sand on your crew and your neighbors will be over.
Freeze a few plastic water bottles and put them in the cooler. They’ll last longer than ice and when they defrost you can drink them. Bonus: you can roll the icy cold bottle on your neck to cool down. Just remember to recycle them after you’re done: studies show freezing and refreezing disposable plastic water bottles can cause a chemical breakdown that could contaminate the water. And don’t try this trick with metal bottles because they can burst when the water expands.
All kiddies want to wade in the surf, but taking a dip in the ocean isn’t always the safest choice. Here's one idea for letting your toddlers have fun in the water; bring a small blow up raft, fill it with water, their favorite toys and presto! Baby beachcombers get to splash around as much as they want, and you get to keep a close eye on them.

Who doesn’t love the Bavarian town of Leavenworth? With tons of shops and things to do, it’s a hit with everyone and there really isn’t a bad time to visit, although if you are not a fan of crowds you’ll want to avoid staying during the weekend. Even so, we found a perfect space that is just far enough from downtown (about 10 minutes) that you’ll feel as if you’re away from it all. This 4,000 square foot with “Gemini Lodge” sits on 12 private acres. The three levels feature four bedrooms and three bathrooms, an amazing kitchen and a dining room with French doors that lead out to the wrap around deck with a view of the mountains. Play in the pool, soak in the hot tub and enjoy an outdoor barbecue when the day is done. This log cabin also features a spiral staircase, a beautiful fireplace, flat screen TV and even a foosball table upstairs.
Just a short ferry boat ride will get you to this home away from home, but you’ll feel as if you’re a lot farther away. This Victorian-styled home (with three bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms) is located at the end of a dead end street, so your kids can make as much noise as they want in the pool and practically nobody will hear them! And you won’t care either since you’ll be engrossed looking out at the fantastic view of Port Gamble Bay from one of the house’s two balconies.
