Our world has changed a lot in recent years. Things parents only dreamed about having delivered to their doorstep just a few years ago are now a reality. Likewise Seattle families can now rent all kinds of stuff that makes life easier and a little less expensive. It kind of makes you wonder, why buy big ticket items if you’re only going to use them once in a while? Whether you’re looking for a private swimming pool to help you stay cool on Seattle’s hottest days, unicorns for parties, free museum passes or adorable sleepover supplies, our list of unique things to rent is here to help.

A Truly Unique Ride

It might seem like a dream, but unicorns are real. Sort of. Whether you are looking for a guest star at your kid's next birthday party or are looking for a perfect model for a special photo portrait, there's a pony for you. Dreamland Ponies has a whole fleet of unicorns to choose from including solid white, rainbow, mini, pony, full-size and everything in between. They are available for hand-led pony rides at their home in Maple Valley or your home. They can bring the ponies to just about anywhere from a private residence to a local park. They will dress up the pony to fit your party theme from Pegasus to a western cowboy theme. And yes, they do offer "grown up" parties as well, but your kids will never forgive you (although, they don't have to know, right?)

According to Dreamland, all of their ponies are "super sweet, gentle, safe, sparkling clean and healthy." You may book up to a dozen different ponies at a time! The service providers also donate a portion of all pony party proceeds towards rescuing horses and ponies in need and other therapy services for children and seniors with chronic and terminal illnesses.

A Swimmingly Great Spot

Swimply.com

While it would be nice to own your own swimming pool, the investment might not be worth the actual splash time your family would use it. That's where swimply.com comes in. Their business model is similar to AirBnb but for pool owners and the people who would like to rent them. The website features hundreds of private pools available to rent right now, including a large handful in the Seattle area, like this one which charges a weekday rental fee of $63 an hour for up to 10 guests. Just like the homes and owners that offer them, each pool and setting is uniquely different. Some come with all of the bells and whistles (think: large patio with picnic tables, barbecues, playgrounds, pool toys, private bathrooms). Rentals range from $49-$149 per hour, and a few even allow up to as many as 40 guests during the rental. Sounds like a birthday party in the making.

Good to Know: You will need to reserve your spot ahead of time, but often arrangements can be made for the same day. Some pools will require you to rent it for more than one hour.

Every LEGO Set Ever

NetBricks was launched in 2015 with the goal of providing an exceptional LEGO-building experience to kids (or their parents, or both) who might not be able to afford every set they want. They are LEGO fanatics themselves, so they understand what LEGO-maniacs want. They have hundreds of LEGO sets of which to rent from on a subscription basis. Pick the set and they'll send them out to your family one set at a time. Start with one, build it, send it back and they'll send another one to your residence, just like the old Netflix movie rental model! ("It's a constant flow of fun" they say.) Or, go for the Pro Membership Experience where NetBricks will send multiple sets at one time and get another new batch 30 days later. And so on, and so on...

NetBricks offer sets that are new, hard to find or retired and range from "Junior" to "Master Builder Academy." Sets offered include the "The Simpson's" House (2523 pieces), "Star Wars" Death Star (3803 pieces), the famous Tower Bridge of London, England (4287 pieces) and many others.

Passes to Seattle's Best Museums, Zoos & More

Kids at the butterfly garden at Woodland Park Zoo over Memorial Day weekend when it reopns
Jeremy Dwyer-Lindgren/WPZ

You know about Free First Thursdays and Free Last Fridays, but sometimes you want to check out your favorite Seattle museums on your terms. Make it happen through the Seattle Public Library, where you can reserve free passes to the Seattle Children’s Museum, The Museum of Flight, MOHAI, even the Woodland Park Zoo (and more!) with just a few clicks. Passes can be reserved up to 30 days in advance of your visit (passes go quickly so reserve them as early as possible), and each pass includes at least two admissions but many include up to four.

If you’re a King County Library cardholder, you can reserve passes through their system. This is a great spot to snag free passes to BAM, KidsQuest and the Seattle Aquarium, to name a few. Families can reserve up to two museum passes per month (with the exception of KidsQuest and BAM that only allow one every 90 days) and can sort by museum or date to make their plans.

Powerhouse Pollinators

Steve Utaski

We’re buzzing with excitement over this Seattle rental service—mason bees. When it comes to pollinating flowers and crops, they get the job done (at a rate 100 times that of honeybees), and you can help them do it by renting a mason bee kit to host in your yard. It’s as easy as hanging up your mason bee block, letting the bees do their pollinating thing and waiting for them to lay eggs in the block, that you then mail back. Those eggs are shipped to farmers around the country where they’re used to pollinate some of your favorite foods like blueberries, cherries and almonds.

The coolest part of this rental kit is the experience you give your kids. Mason bees are docile and non-aggressive, so stinging isn’t something you have to worry about. That means your kids can watch the bees work and lay their eggs, packing them with mud, mason-style. It’s a fascinating interactive experience that directly connects kids with the foods they eat and the eco-system around them. Just think how different those cherries, pears and blueberries will taste to them this summer!

Good to Know: Although Rent Mason Bees 2022 season is over, you can keep the 2023 season in mind. Pick up takes place in March and the kits get returned in June.

Maybe you don’t get quite the right sun. Or your postage-stamp city yard won’t support the garden of your dreams. Whatever the reason, you crave fertile space where you and the kids can grow veggies, herbs and flowers. So why not rent some through the city’s P-Patch garden program? With 90 gardens throughout the city and over 3,000 plots, totaling 15-acres of grow-able land, you’re sure to find a garden spot that’s right for you. Can you dig it?

Tools You Need to Complete "That" Project

iStock

If you’re used to checking out books from your local library, get ready for something different. Seattle is home to five tool lending libraries that (you guessed it) lend tools to members for free or next to nothing. Like a library, tool libraries require a membership. Once you’ve joined, members have access to the library inventory where (between the five) you’ll find every tool you’ve ever needed and them some, including typical household tools, garden and automotive tools, even odds and ends like juicers and sewing machines. Memberships are free, but most suggest a donation between $20-$60 with flexibility, as each library is committed to making tools are accessible to all community members. Additionally, each library has different rental limits, but a week is pretty standard.

Good to Know: The West Seattle, Southeast Seattle and Capitol Hill tool libraries have workshop space members can use too. And many of these tool libraries host fix-it workshops where people can bring broken appliances, toys and clothes in need of mending in an effort the keep them out of the landfill and practice sustainability.

Don’t get us wrong, we love Seattle’s amazing parks and playgrounds as much as the next parent. They’re some of our favorite sunny days spots. Plus, when it comes to outdoor birthday parties, there’s no denying the ease of throwing one at a local park. But if you’re looking for creative places to host an outdoor birthday party that go beyond the everyday, we’ve got ideas. Help your summer birthday kiddo shine when you book a bash at a petting farm, aboard a spirited cruise or at a fun park. Read on for the party-pleasing details.

Head to a farm

Wide open spaces are the key to a successful outdoor birthday party for kids. And where better to find acres upon acres for kids to roam than at a local petting farm? There are more than a few local farms and animal sanctuaries where families can host a barnyard bash to remember this summer. First on our list is Farrel-McWhirter Farm Park in Redmond, where kids can explore 68 acres of trails, fields and creeks before visiting the animals. Parties can be booked on Saturdays from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. for up to 20 guests. They include either a wagon ride or pony rides, and prices start at $450 for residents. Just be sure to sign up as soon as you can for a party this summer; these popular spots go quickly.

Another farm-tastic spot to consider for your next outdoor birthday party is Tiny Hearts Homestead in Lake Tapps. Here, the birthday kiddo and friends can get as much animal time as they can handle, while you’ve got lots of picnic table space to set out treats and gifts. Parties can be booked for $150 an hour online. Fall City Fancy Farm offers a similar option, plus pony rides for your summer celebration.

Celebrate at the beach

Seattle Parks and Recreation

One of the upsides to an outdoor birthday party is that it’s naturally low-key. And it doesn’t get more laid back than packing a picnic, beach blankets and toys (hint: sand toys make great party favors) and heading to Golden Gardens or Alki to party. Kids can explore tidepools, build sandcastles and splash in the Sound. And you can pull out a package of chocolate bars, graham crackers and marshmallows and sing "Happy Birthday" around a bonfire. Just be sure to review the fire pit rules before you break out into song.

Plan a day at the fun park

Allison Sutcliffe

Flying pumpkins, antique cars, canoes and an enormous jump pillow are just a few of the perks of Remlinger Farm's Fun Park that’s one of the easiest places to host an outdoor birthday party. Packages are booked in two-hour increments, (for either 11 a.m.-1 p.m. or 2-4 p.m.) and include time in the covered party corral, smack dab in the middle of the fun park. Everything you need to enjoy the day is taken care of—a server sets up and takes down the party and helps with everything in between. The $500 price, for 15 guests (kids and parents), includes pizza, salad, beverages, cake, ice cream and party favors. Pony rides can be added for $7 a person, and extra guests (adults or kids) are just $25 each. Party in the room, and play all day at the Eastside’s version of Disneyland.

Set sail aboard the Queen Anne's Revenge

Emerald City Pirates

The high seas (a.k.a. Lake Union) is a great spot for families looking for a different take on an outdoor birthday party. Let the Emerald City Pirates entertain your little buccaneer plus party guests on this interactive sailing experience. To get the party started, kids will go to pirate school and test their newfound skills on the guests at Ivar’s as they sail by. Then it’s time to get down to business and raid the pirate’s treasure chest on board. But, wait. What’s this? The chest is empty. In a truly delightful turn of events, these newly minted pirates and adorable party-goers must sail the open seas in search of the treasure. All we’ll say about the experience is that the stakes are high, and a water cannon fight may be what it takes to wrest the treasure from the bad guy. Then it’s time for a rousing round of “Happy Birthday,” sung by your fellow pirates and a game or two.

When the day is done, party pirates can head to the shores of Lake Union Park for a cake and ice cream (whatever you’ve brought along to celebrate). And the birthday kiddo can check out the cool pirate pack swag that’s part of this experience; all the party guests receive an official pirate certificate too. You’ll need a minimum of 15 guests to get the discounted group rate on this sail, or book individually at the standard pricing.

Splash at a pool, spraypark or wading pool

Mounger pool in Seattle is a great space to host an outdoor birthday parties
Seattle Parks and Recreation

If you’ve got a toddler, planning an outdoor birthday party at a wading pool or splash pad in Seattle or on the Eastside is one of the best bets around (assuming the weather cooperates). Roll up early to grab your spot (and snag a nearby picnic table too), then set out blankets and watch the kids splash and play throughout the day.

If you’re looking to host a party with a little more structure, you can’t go wrong at one of Seattle’s most scenic spots—Coleman Pool at Lincoln Park. Parties can be scheduled on Friday, Saturday or Sunday nights from 7-9 p.m. Mounger Pool is the other fantastic outdoor party option. Although you won’t have the view, you will have access to the playland pool—a toddler’s dream. The pool can be rented Saturdays and Sundays from 5:45-7:15 p.m. and Monday through Thursday from 5:30-7 p.m.

Good to know: Seattle's splash pads opened over Memorial Day weekend, but Seattle's wading pools aren't open yet. The two outdoor pools are set to open the weekend of June 18 and 19, and will then move to a full-time schedule starting June 25. But you can book group pool rentals starting June 1 at noon.

Zip into an adventure park

via instagram

Outside is the name of the game at any one of Seattle’s adventure parks. When it comes to party planning, High Trek Adventures in Everett has options for everyone. Book a party package on the ropes and zipline courses where kids as young as four can test their skills on the cadets kids course. Anyone over the age of seven is allowed to tackle the super high challenges found on the captain’s course. Playing laser tag on the outdoor course is also an option for groups. Group parties are booked on a per person cost (between $30-$55) with a minimum number required to get that rate. Plus they offer lots of flexibility in the BYO realm. Bring your own food, drink and cake to enjoy at the reserved picnic table, or make it super easy and choose from their selection of frozen treats.

Hit a hole in one

There's lots to love about mini golf, especially on a sunny summer day. It's another low-key, low-stress birthday party idea that's guaranteed to please. While there are a few different courses that host birthday parties in the area, the ease of hosting your next "hit" birthday party at Interbay Golf Center may have you wondering why you hadn't done this before. When you call to reserve a party (call at least 2-3 weeks in advance), they'll set aside a picnic table for you and make sure the course is clear for your group to jump in and play. The day of, kids can play through the whimsical challenge of this 18-hole course before sitting down for a bite to eat (pizza, hot dogs or chicken strips are on the menu) with friends. Parents can bring in whatever birthday dessert strikes their fancy and little extras that aren't on the menu, like juice boxes, so kids can refuel. The price is just $15 per kiddo for this simply sweet celebration.

Sender City

best birthday party locations in LA
Andie Huber

Kids who love to climb all things climbable will never want their time here to end. Sender City—the kid nook inside the massive Sender One climbing gym near LAX—makes it easy for kids to reach the ceiling safely. The room is outfitted with a colorful assortment of challenges, including stair-stepping "skyscrapers" (featured above), a timed rock wall that lets climbers compete with friends, and a firefighting-themed wall that challenges kids to put out fires (by hitting buttons) as they climb ladders to the top. And don't worry: Climbers are hooked into an auto-belay system while climbing, so the ropes quickly catch them and whisk them gently to the ground every time they jump or fall.

Birthday party packages include 30-minutes of activities and instruction; one hour of climbing time inside Sender City (plus all the gear needed to climb); one hour in the party space; free climbing for the birthday kid's parents (trust us, you'll want to join in on the fun!); plus a party attendant to make sure everything goes smoothly.
