Got a kid with a special birthday coming up? (Of course they’re all special, but you know…) If your child has a thing for those colorful, positive vibe-loving Trolls—are there any who don’t?—we’ve got a suggestion. Midtown Manhattan’s Trolls the Experience, an interactive journey featuring Queen Poppy and friends, hosts birthday parties, and we were invited to celebrate the Big 7 there. Trolls the Experience solo? Super fun. Trolls the Experience with your snack pack? Best. Day.  Ever. Read on for a play-by-play!

They Deserve It, But So Do You
If you’re like us, your ability and inclination to plan and throw a kid’s birthday party waxes and wanes from year to year. Some years you can whip up a disco dance party in the park (done it), others, not so much. Which is why sometimes you need someone else to do all the planning, work, and entertaining. (Also: a turn-key party with someone else as host gives you the chance to actually enjoy your child’s birthday party—what a novel concept!)

When we say the Trolls the Experience has it “handled”, we mean it. What’s included with your party will vary depending on the package you select (more on that later) but thanks to a decorated private party room, top-notch party help, the Trolls Experience itself, cupcakes, and a personalize souvenir, you really don’t have to do a thing. (We brought a cake and added some doo-dads to a goodie bag, but don’t really need to.)

Where’s the party at?
Aside from the Experience itself, one of the best things about a Trolls the Experience birthday party is the party room. This festive, roomy private space is not only decked out with balloon towers and lots of party decorations,  it serves as a gathering point (all guests are sent up to the third floor prior to embarking on the Experience), home base for your stuff, and, if needed, a spot for parents or kids to take a breather if they need to.

Once our guests had all arrived, our two party hosts (total pros who did an amazing job) briefed the kids on the party’s events. (We hosted 15 kids total, ranging in age from about four to nine, and that seemed to be the sweet spot in terms of age appropriateness.) Since the kids travel as a group through the Experience, they’re taught the phrase “No Troll Left Behind” to make sure they stick together, and are shown a wand that indicates where the group is. It was clear throughout the journey that our guides were mindful of keeping everyone on track and accounted for.

photo: Mimi O’Connor

First stop: Troll-tastic transformation with Glitter Gurus
When it Trollville, get Trolled-up. Kids saddle up to makeup stations for a Troll Transformation from “Glitter Gurus”, with cheeks, eyebrows and the nose getting painted. They can also choose some Troll “hair”—cardboard donned with the use of a rubber band a la a birthday hat—in the style of Trolls like Poppy, Guy Diamond, etc. When they’re done, they can check themselves out in mirrors both normal and “goofy.” (For an extra special treat for the birthday kid, you can opt for the VIP Hair We Go Experience, complete with full facepaint and take-home deluxe Trolls wig!)  And then, they’re ready to rumble!

photo: Mimi O’Connor

Follow the Rainbow Path
The loose narrative of Trolls the Experience is visitors complete tasks as they move along a rainbow path in search of Poppy’s Best Day Ever Celebration. At each stop along the way, kids get a sticker badge when they complete the activity found there.

The first stop is “Branch’s Musical Mashup” where kids activate the critters of Trollville to create a music track for the big celebration. It’s a light- and sound- filled sensory experience, with kids activating different character elements in the space.

photo: Mimi O’Connor

Caterbus Fun
Next stop—one of our favorites—is a “ride” on the Caterbus, a giant caterpillar filled with paper “gems” that must be collected for the party. One catch: a fan blows them everywhere and kids have to grab as many as they can as they fly around like confetti.

photo: Mimi O’Connor

Critter Creek
Party-goers then move on to Critter Creek, where they play virtual tag on a giant screen, “splash” in a virtual creek filled with gems, and climb a tree trunk just because.

photo: Mimi O’Connor

The Big Event
Finally, the group makes it to Poppy’s Best Day Ever Bash. But first, they don special glasses, because this isn’t just any ordinary party—it’s a 3D dance party!

Party-goers are led into a big, colorfully-lit room resembling Troll Village that has a large screen/stage area at the front. With Trolls the Experience party hosts leading the crowd, the soundtrack includes some of the greatest Trolls hits, including, of course, “Best Day Ever” and the finale, “Can’t Stop the Feeling.”

All the while, a 3D video featuring all of the Trolls and friends doing their particular thing plays on the jumbo screen. (Guy Diamond, of course, makes an appearance to fart glitter, and everyone does the floss together, as it should be.)

photo: Mimi O’Connor

Don’t Forget the After-party!
From there, your party is led down to an area for a group selfie (another highlight), and kids create their own memento of the experience by scrapbooking it. (This is where the badges they got along the Rainbow Path are used, and everyone gets a copy of the group photo. Staffers are on hand to help with scrapbooking as well.)

Our party hosts were particularly determined to make sure everyone could be seen in our photo, and that it was a good one. It was much appreciated.

photo: Mimi O’Connor

A Special Meet & Greet
It wouldn’t be a visit to Troll Village without an appearance from Queen Poppy herself. Following the scrapbooking, she comes out to present a special gift to the guest of honor, hug each of the attendees, and pose for a group photo.

Let Them Eat Cake!—and pizza
And then, it’s time to eat. It’s back up to the party room for pizza, juice and water, and cake.

Again, our party helpers took care of everything, from serving to cutting the cake, to stuffing the goodie bags, which everyone got on their way out.

photo: Mimi O’Connor

Trolls the Experience Birthday Party Basics
If you can’t tell, our guest of honor gives the Trolls the Experience Birthday Party two thumbs up. We do, too, and were particularly impressed by how well the event was run. We were told to expect and hour for the experience, and an hour for pizza and cake, and the timing was almost exact.

As stated, our party hosts had things well in hand, and kept the kids entertained and in line—an impressive feat!

We had some jitters from a couple kids and parents (would it be too overwhelming?) and let kids know if at any point they wanted to come back to the party room and relax, they could. No one took us up on it, and every kid really seemed yo enjoy themselves. (We received positive feedback from several parents unprompted. One younger sibling wasn’t feeling well, and took a time out in a separate “family room”, which was much appreciated and a great thing to have as an option.

FYI: There’s stroller parking on the main floor if needed.

Troll the Experience Party Packages
Interested in holding a Trolls the Experience birthday party? You have several options. Choose from the Classic Trolltastic Party ($1,200), the Deluxe Trolltastic Party ($1,350), and the Ultimate Trolltastic Party ($1,650). Basic party packages include the Experience, electronic invites, private room, decor, cupcakes, water and juice, setup and cleanup, Poppy meet and greet, and two party hosts. The pricier options include some or all of  the following: pizza, sandwiches, goodie bags,  and the Hair We Go transformation for guests and birthday boy or girl. You can download a full party brochure with all the details here.

Parties are for 12 people, a combined number for adults and kids; a 5:1 ratio of kids to adults is required. Because of space constraints, this is largely a drop-off party.  Parties larger than 12 can be accommodated for additional cost.

Under Cover: Indoor Birthday Party Spots for Toddlers

Between bridge trolls, Archie McPhee, the Pike Place Market gum wall and a playground centered around a larger-than-life cowboy hat and boots, Seattle has its share of quirky family attractions. And now, you can add one more item to your family’s unique adventures—ice bumper cars! It’s Tacoma’s latest family attraction and one of just 14 places in the world where you can ride them. Scroll down to learn more about this one-of-a-kind experience.

A New Kind of Ride

If ice bumper cars conjure images of ice hockey, curling or traditional bumper cars—you’re right! They’re quite a mix. They look like colorful oversized hockey pucks with LED lights. And the way they glide, so smoothly across the ice, is similar to a curling stone. Like traditional bumper cars, a driver controls them, although their cushioned bump is less aggressive than a carnival ride. In short, they’re an easy way for families to have fun on the ice with little skill involved. Each car is controlled by two joysticks that are so easy to use even toddlers and preschoolers can get in on the fun. They help you move forward and spin in either direction, in your pursuit of (or escape from) bumps. It doesn’t get easier than that!

Let’s Go for a Spin!

A lot of planning went into bringing the ice bumper cars to Sprinker Recreation Center. One of the priorities was making it a logistically painless experience for families. So rather than waiting around in long lines, riders will reserve time slots so they know exactly when it’s their turn. For their Grand Opening Weekend (May 25-27) reservations for a spot can be made online through Brown Paper Tickets. After opening weekend, families can call in to reserve a session (253-798-4030). Each session is 15 minutes of ride time ($12). But you can add a skate session to your bumper car ride ($19) to give the kids something else to do before and after their slippery adventure. Once you’ve reserved your slot, it’s time to plan the rest of your South Sound adventure!

Beyond the Bumper Cars

After you’ve checked out the bumper cars, and skated a few laps around the ice rink, you can keep the good times rolling at Spanaway Park. The same spot you’ve taken the kids to see Fantasy Lights during the winter holidays looks quite a bit different on a sunny day. And it’s just a quick hop over Military Road to get there (psst…keep your car parked at Sprinker to avoid the parking fee here). The 135-acre park has lots of paved walking trails that run along the lake, perfect for toddlers and strollers. There’s a new playground there, as well, with equipment that will keep both Littles and Bigs busy burning off any leftover energy they have after bumper cars. If the boathouse is open, you can rent paddleboats, rowboats and canoes to take out on the lake for just $10 per hour. Adding a stop here onto your South Sound trip means you can make a full day out of this adventure!

Good Eats

There are a few ways to “food” after you’ve had your fill of bumper cars. You can grab concessions at the rink’s concession stand, which will be open whenever the bumper cars are bumping. Eats from home are also allowed, although food in the rink isn’t. You’ll find plenty of picnic benches or grassy fields to throw down a blanket and enjoy the sunshine around the rec center. And Spanaway Park, just across the road, has even more seating if a change of scenery is what your kiddos need.

Perfect Party Packages

If your kiddo is always on the lookout for an unusual birthday experience, the ice bumper cars certainly fit the bill. Add the ice bumper car experience to either of the existing skate party packages for an easy win. Fully-hosted party packages that include a party room or rinkside seating, food, décor and a special announcement for the birthday kid and 10 friends runs $200. If DIY is more your speed, you can rent a party room and host 10 friends at the skate rink for $150. Ice bumper cars can be added to either of these packages for $12 per person for 15-minutes. It puts a whole new spin on a typical party package.

Good to Know

1. Opening Weekend has extended hours. Riders can book times online for sessions at these dates and times: May 25, 11 a.m.–10 p.m.; May 26, 2 p.m.–8:30 p.m.; May 27 11 a.m.–8 p.m.

2. Kids ages 3-5 ride for free, but they must ride with an adult. Kids who are 6 years old and 42” tall can ride by themselves.

3. Closed toes shoes are a must, so leave your flip-flops at home.

4. It’s an ice rink, so even if the sun is shining, be sure to wear layers to keep you and the kiddos warm.

5. It’s best to arrive 10-15 minutes before load time to make sure you don’t miss your window.

6. Although specific time frames are still TBD, the ice bumper cars will only run for public sessions on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Where to Find the City’s Best Parks & Playgrounds

This has been a great year for new play spaces in the Q-borough—and we can add yet another one to the list! The recently-opened Peek-A-Booo (yes, with 3 Os) is an indoor playground in the heart of Flushing, Queens, and is a must-visit for kids 7 and under. There was some early buzz about this place, so we decided to see what all the fuss was about. Our verdict? When your 4-year-old sobs because they do not want to leave, it’s a good indicator about how much they enjoyed. Check out our review below!

It’s Huuuuuge!
The 6,000 ft., ground-level Peek-A-Booo was founded by Yiejie (EJ) Wang, a Queens parent who previously operated a liquor store and really wanted to open a business that welcomed kids from all over the city—and was also a place where she could safely bring her son. Wang found the empty retail space in Flushing, and officially opened Peek-A-Booo (which has three o’s simply because, “it’s cute!”) in February.

You park your stroller to the left of the main entrance, stick your shoes in cubbies up front, and enter the very soft, padded indoor playground in just your socks. (You can purchase a pair for $2 if you or your kid forgets them.) Parents must sign a waiver for their kids, and everyone is encouraged to use hand sanitizer at the counter, before entering the space through a gate.

Overall, everything at Peek-A-Booo screams, “fun!”  The place is whimsical, inviting, and safe, with lots to do; it was constructed to meet all New York City safety standards and is also very colorful. (Wang says she wanted to make sure the various colors and overall aesthetic of the place photographed nicely when parents snapped pics of their kids having fun.)

Not One, But Two Ball Pits
The venue’s most popular attractions are its two—yes, two—huge ball-pits. The first one visitors encoutner has an interactive digital “video game” along its back wall that allows kids and parents alike to toss plastic ball-pit balls at the screen to ‘hit’ targets of creatures and emjois. Kids can also ride a purple slide into the mass of yellow, green, and orange balls.

The rear ball-pit features a central house structure in the middle that kids can climb into. There’s also a large ‘treehouse’ next to the first ball-pit with a wide slide that changes color and designs when you and your kids slide down.

Other must-dos include a trampoline with a swing, large, plastic cars to ride, and many climbing structures.

Kids can also play around in a large, closed-in sandpit complete with sand toys in its own little section. (Fancy feature: little lights make it look like little crabs and snakes are inside the sand in a fun not creepy way.)

While there’s a lot to enjoy here, Wang plans to incorporate a new play structure or set of toys every few weeks for variety.

Stay in Your Lane
For younger kids ages three and under, an area in the rear of the space has soft blocks, smaller climbing structures, mini basketball hoops, riding toys, and is also well-padded like the rest of the space.

The separation of the older kids and younger kids is a very nice touch; it prevents excited, older kids from racing around toddlers, and allows for toddlers and younger kids to have their own designated, private area to frolic. Also in the rear of Peek-A-Boo are more climbing structures and animal-shaped, car-like (solid) plastic structures to ‘ride.’

Employees walk around the venue making sure the space is clean and keeping an eye on the kids. But note: This is not a drop-off space; kids must be accompanied by an adult, and children should be seven or younger.

Party On, Kid!
Yes, they do birthdays, and the party room is located right in the center of the space. Packages range from $380 to $799 for kids 7 and under. Celebrations include playtime, food, cake, and your choice of party theme.

Note: When parties are held, either on weekdays or weekends, the space does not close down completely just for the party; instead the birthday child and their young guests are given a special bracelet and/or stamp to be ID’d. (However, just one party is held at a time.)

Basic But Important
Peek-A-Booo has two on-site bathrooms, and one has a changing table. There’s also a little section with tables and chairs for snack time, however, no food or drink is permitted near the ball-pits, climbing structures, and games.

In the future, Wang hopes to incorporate a mini cafe with coffee and teas, but for now the only food available for purchase on site are snacks, juices, and water, so if you plan on spending a few hours at Peek-A-Booo, bring along some food and expect to eat it in the designated snack section.

When we visited from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on a weekday, it was not too crowded at all, but it’s recommended you call ahead to make sure there’s space to play. especially on weekends.

The Price of Play
For now, pricing is as follows: A monthly membership is $99; Quarterly is $199, yearly is $399. “Punch cards” are also available for purchase for $200; after 10 sessions, you get 3 visits free.

There is a drop-in “all-day” fee of $25 for one child and one adult; it’s an additional $10 per adult. With the $25 all-day ticket, there’s no time limit on how long you can stay and play for the morning and/or afternoon. Hourly, it’s $15 per hour for one kid and one adult.

Cash or credit cards are accepted.

At press time, Peek-A-Booo was still new, so there is no official web site as of yet, but keep an eye on it’s Facebook page for updates and specials. (Prices and hours may adjust in the coming weeks/months.)

Currently, Peek-a-boo is open from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., which is nice because if your kid needs to burn off some energy after school, stop on by, it’s worth the subway ride on the 7, or the drive.

Kids who love to swim could care less what the weather forecast is – they’ll ask to take a dip outside even though the skies are gray and the water is ice-cold. So what do you do with your tadpoles now that the rainy season is here? Simple. Grab their swimsuits and check out Tacoma’s newest indoor pool. Open year-round, and heated to a cozy 85 degrees, your crew can get their water fix without freezing their tooshies. Dive in for the deets!

The Recreation Pool
The original pool at People’s Community Center opened in 1979 and remained a part of Tacoma’s Hilltop neighborhood until it permanently closed down in 2008. After undergoing a major reconstruction project, the facility has finally reopened and is quickly becoming the go-to indoor pool for South Sound families. Large floor-to-ceiling windows fill the room with tons of natural light, giving it a nice outdoorsy feel compared to the basement-like atmosphere you get with some indoor pools. It also has a unique L- shaped design that divides the pool into three distinct sections: a shallow area, a current channel and a lap lane area that transforms into two basketball courts and a water-walk play area during open swim sessions.

Splash-tastic Features
Your little ones will feel completely at home in this particularly shallow pool, with depths ranging from two feet in the shallowest part to just over five feet in the deep end. Wide steps give a gradual entry into the spacious kiddie area, and you’ll find the submerged bench around the perimeter is the perfect place for water bugs to practice their jumps from, or where mom and dad can have a seat to watch as the excitement unfolds.

The current channel is like a mini lazy river (minus the tubes) with jets that propel kids around in circles as if they’re spinning on a merry-go-round. The duo basketball hoops are perfect for half-court games, and balls are provided so you don’t have to bring your own. But the big draw for your older kiddos will be the water walking feature (Psst… swimmers must be age 7 or older, plus be at least 5 feet tall or able to pass a swim test to do the walk). Floating disks shaped like lily pads and log rounds create a path for traversing the pool. Kids can try to make their way across using their balance alone, or with the help of a cargo net suspended overhead.

The Spray Pad
Sure to become your little one’s favorite place to play during the cold months ahead, you’ll find Tacoma’s first indoor splash pad is loaded with ground sprays galore and plenty of run-around room for big imaginations to roam free. There are colorful buckets that pour surprise showers and dozens of bubbling geysers to dance around in, but what we love the most about this spray pool is that it’s stationed right next to the pool so you can easily stay close to your little ones while keeping an eye on your older kids who swim.

Have a Swim Party
If you’re hoping to make a big splash for your kiddo’s next birthday, the People’s Pool is offering a sweet deal on party packages through the end of 2016. Prices start at $40 per hour plus admission for parties held during afternoon and evening open swim sessions, and private parties are available Saturdays and Sundays from 4:30 p.m.- 6:30 p.m. starting at $85 per hour. Packages include the use of a large party room located adjacent to the pool and plenty of water fun for everyone.

Good to Know
1. There isn’t a direct walkway between the locker rooms and the pool, but you’ll find three private family restrooms with showers located inside the pool area near the splash pad.

2. Towels are not provided, so be sure to pack some along for your crew.

3. Free lockers are available for guests to use, but you’ll need to bring your own lock to securely store your belongings.

4. In addition to open swim sessions, the facility also offers lessons, exercise classes and lap swim times – no membership necessary.

Good news, Eastside parents! No more long drives in search of an indoor playground – JuzPlay Kids has juz’ opened in Issaquah and is ready to delight your little monkeys. Combining the best small-scale climbing toys (think Giggle Jungle in Redmond and DaBuDa in Bellevue) with large-scale towering climbing, crawling and sliding apparatus (think Funtastic Playtorium), JuzPlay Kids offers exciting variety for wee ones all the way up to 55 inchers.

photo: Jennifer B. Davis

JPK Visionary
JuzPlay is the brainchild of Stephanie Tang, who, along with her sister, opened JuzPlay Kids right off N.W. Gillman Blvd. on Mall Street. Seeing a need for not only something in the Issaquah/Sammamish area, Tang also understands the benefit of providing a place that can entertain kids and siblings alike. After all, she and her sister are both mamas to small kids. And since Tang often finds what appeals to her younger daughter isn’t as exciting for her older daughter, she designed and constructed this play area to grow with kids up to 55 inches.

photo: Jennifer B. Davis

Treehouse Fun for Everyone
Centered around a treehouse theme, JuzPlay Kids features mascots Juzzy and Spila, magical treelings who love to play in their world made up of enchanted playgrounds. The treelings watch over a dedicated area for infants and toddlers along with an upper loft designed for nursing moms (complete with a glass railing to keep an eye on older sibs below). Toddlers and preschoolers can enjoy a soft climbing pyramid, balloon pit with slide and a variety of climbing and swinging pieces, while older kids will find the netted-in play structure right up their alley. Psst! The play structure includes two ball pits, a large-scale slide and three stories of climbing fun.

Party Time
If you’re looking for a place to throw your little animal’s next big bash, a party room is available for rent and provides not only the private room rental and free play passes for guests, but also decorations (balloons and banners), the ability to bring in your own food and drink, paper and plastic products in the color of your choice and use of the photo booth. While still in-process, the photo booth will provide 2”x6” photo strips – unlimited use for guests available as a party add-on. Additional extras include themed decorations (think Frozen, Star Wars and Dora the Explorer) and snacks provided by JPK.

Work Hard, Play Hard
If you’re looking for a place to pull a little work/play double duty, JuzPlay Kids features an “out of the way” upper loft and seating inside the party room (with visibility to the main play room), plus free Wi-Fi and ample access to plugs and USB outlets. Snacks are also available for purchase and an upper TV loft is scheduled to be installed which will provide the ultimate chillax station—making this a truly comfortable space for every member of your family.

If your little one’s idea of afternoon tea involves plastic cups and lukewarm faucet water (can’t knock the imagination, though), get ready to blow her mind with a real tea party at Vintage Glam Tea Party & Co., a one-of-a-kind party room located in Petworth. Pinkies up!

Someone Else’s Trash is Someone Else’s Treasure
The first floor houses a super-cute preloved boutique featuring vintage, used and new clothing, jewelry, accessories, gift wares and craft items (it’s almost impossible to not want to buy something, er…everything!). The second floor is where the magic happens in a Vintage Party Room that’s reminiscent of great-grandmas fancy formal living room. If you decide to throw a shindig here, an assigned host helps to coordinate everything around a tea party that features all vintage wares—from teacups and saucers to luncheon plates and serving tiers.

Girl Talk (and Tea)
While Vintage hosts all sorts of parties (think: baby showers, corporate gatherings, and grown-up get-togethers) their “Girlie Girl” Tea Parties are just what your tannin loving tyke ordered. Designed especially for littles (ages 6-12) who love to dress up, entertain friends and host cute tea parties, “Girlie Girl” Tea Parties are held for up to 12 guests in Vintage Glam’s party room or at an off site location.

Cheers!
This isn’t your mom’s tea party! Guests get to use petite teacups and saucers, luncheon plates, cloth table linens and napkins, silverware, platters and servers for cake,  Centerpieces, tea (herbal or fruit), punch, milk or juice—regardless of the beverage tea cups, saucers and/or punch bowls are used—during the tea party. And, come dressed to impress, but just in case, consider renting Vintage Glam’s Fabulous Dressing Table staged with feather boas, vintage hats, bracelets, necklaces, handbags, gloves and scarves to accommodate “dress-up” during the party.

Looking for a winter break outing? A snowy day excursion? Something to do with the family on a weekend? You need to hit up Buzz-a-Rama, the old school New York slot car racing outfit where kids with a need for speed — or just plain fun — can rock out on mini racing tracks. It’s the real deal, lo-fi, and a hot birthday spot too (especially for those winter/early spring babies who can’t party in the parks). Here’s how to get Buzzed!

What’s the Buzz?
Buzz-A-Rama (which takes its name from the moniker of its owner, Frank “Buzz” Perri) is the only spot in New York City where you can race slot cars — little, lightweight, seven-inch plastic cars which zoom around a track, controlled by hand-held rheostats. A slot-car enthusiast himself, Perri opened the Kensington, Brooklyn Buzz-A-Rama in 1965, and outfitted it with tracks from California manufacturer American Model Car Raceway, or as Perri says, “the Rolls Royce of Slot Cars.”

It’s probably no surprise that the place is a magnet for kids (although adults come and play — and race —here, too) and the setting for many spirited birthday parties. (The place has been around so long that “kids” who had their birthdays at Buzz-A-rama now bring their own children to race and celebrate.)

It’s old school, it’s gritty, it’s got a drop ceiling and video games from back in the day — and your kids will love it.

The Buzz Basics
Open only on weekends, Buzz-A-Rama is home to four tracks of varying lengths: yellow (80 feet); black (95 feet) orange (100 feet), and a blue, extra-large “king” track, which is mostly reserved for the pros and adults. Perri says the sweet spot for slot car racing for kids is between the ages of five and 12. (We brought a 3 1/2-year-old and while she wasn’t the most adept racer, she could do it and had a great time.)

Racers pay for equipment rental (the car) and time in 15-minute increments, with prices varying by track, i.e., 30 minutes on the yellow track will cost you $9.50; 15 minutes on the orange track will set you back $6. (If you bring your own car, it’s cheaper, but if you’re the type to have your own car you already know that.)

You grab your car, place it in your assigned colored lane, and use the trigger-equipped handset to control the speed of your car. (Speed regulation is the key factor in successful racing; taking a corner too fast will cause the car to derail.)

A Very Buzz Birthday
As mentioned, Buzz-A-Rama does boffo birthday business, and they pretty much guarantee kids will love a bash here. You can rent out one, two, or all three tracks for a party, with a potential 24 racers behind the “wheel.” (Each track has 8 lanes; additional racers can be accommodated on single or multiple tracks with rotating users, a process Buzz seems to have refined.) Party rentals include the cars, controls, and the time, and each party ends with a “Wildcat Race” — a sudden-death match which tests the skills racers have acquired over the past hour. Price per track rental ranges from $150 to $250.

More to Love at Buzz
Buzz-A-Rama can accommodate your pizza and cake, too, in its very basic “party room,” which you can rent for an additional fee of $100 for an hour. It’s essentially some large tables behind a wall, but the space is encircled by a gallery of vintage arcade games, which kids can play for free when the chowing down is complete. (Pac-Man, Galaga, pinball machines and racing games — they’re all here.)

The Fine Print
Buzz-A-Rama is only open on weekends, and you should always make sure the space isn’t all booked up with parties before heading over.

Interested in booking a party? Reserve it now; demand is high and Buzz-A-Rama is only open from September to just after Labor Day. Be sure to read the extensive info on booking parties, deposit required and more on the Buzz-A-Rama site. Be advised that Buzz himself lords over party proceedings and he runs a tight ship, using a bullhorn to corral excited revelers from one track to the next, to the party room, etc., which if you ask us, is pretty genius.

Note that parties at Buzz-A-Rama are drop-off affairs, although it’s recommended that each track is manned by three adults to replace the cars when they become dislodged from the track — a fairly common occurrence when kids are getting the hang of taking those turns. (You’ll be charged $10 per person for any additional adults over that number.)

As we roll into the rainy season, now is the time to have some indoor play options in your bag of tricks. Good news! The Eastside is now home to three new drop-in play areas where your tykes can roll, jump, hop, climb, slide and burn off the crazies every day of the week. The best part? These hot spots don’t require a membership or tons of cash, so you can drop-in and play when the weather’s not-so-hot.

DaBuDa Playhouse & Cafe

Named after the owner’s son’s first word (though they’re still not sure on the meaning), self-proclaimed party queen Callia Kwan based this new Bellevue drop-in play place on favorites of her own children. Bright, clean and colorful, DaBuDa’s space includes four moving play structures, three slides, a raised obstacle course, balloon pen, water like “pool” and a handful of kiddie cars and scooters to zoom around in.

Extras
A full kitchen is close to completion along with the installation of a latte machine – a glorious addition for sleep deprived ‘rents. A small area is available for party rentals, and a larger separate party room is set to open for even more festive occasions. Asian-inspired fare is available (think pineapple buns, sushi and moo shu pork) along with kid favorite standards like pizza, grilled cheese, bagels and fruit and yogurt platters.

Best Time to Go
DaBuDa’s Playhouse is best enjoyed by toddlers and preschoolers and because it has only been open a month (and is tucked back in a crowded office park off Northup Way and 20th), the space is not overly crowded. Kwan says that in general, Mondays are the best times to avoid any possible crowds.

Good to Know
Similar to other locations, punch cards are available providing a 25% discount on 10 visits. But definitely like them on Facebook as spur of the moment and happy hours deals are often posted. Combined art/play activities are also featured (days and times vary – check their Facebook page) and Kwan is working to partner with neighborhood organizations like Kindermusic, so she can offer joint music/play classes in the coming months.

Giggle Jungle

Nestled in the western corner of Redmond Town Center, Giggle Jungle is the newest offering in the mall’s quickly becoming “kid corner” (along with Gymboree Play & Music and the mall’s outdoor sensory garden). Offering the ever-popular pink, green, blue and white motorized toys, two of the favorites include the dolphin carousel and climbing pyramid. Your lil’ nut can even ride on the swinging peanut, without worrying about allergies. Of course, there’s also the bubble pen, bouncy house area (with a slide), a small toddler area and building blocks for stacking and crashing.

Extras
Like the Giggle Jungle on Facebook to get a 10% discount or buy a punch card for 5 or 10 visits for an even better discount. Or better yet… stop by for happy hour the last hour they’re open each night for only $5. The Giggle Jungle allows outside food and offers free Wi-Fi access, so you can drop by with dinner and kids in tow and leave with full bellies and tired tots. A win-win in our book!

Good to Know
Socks are required and kids must be under 48 inches to play. Parents must also stay and supervise their tots. Packed with fun, Giggle Jungle is still small enough to keep an eye on your little giggler at all times. If you’re thinking this sounds like the perfect place to throw your tot’s next bash, Giggle Jungle offers a small room for parties which includes use of the party room for 1 1/2 hours and all day free play for up to 16 partygoers. Party packages cost $299 on weekends and $199 on weekdays.

Funtastic Playtorium

Definitely one of the more active, crowded and wild of play indoor spaces, the Funtastic Playtorium is a large, recently-opened spot in Factoria Mall. Situated next door to the Children’s Museum, this space is good for your most climby-est, slidey-est adventurer.

Within a huge meshed-in structure, kids up to 10 years old can tunnel, side, bounce, creep, climb and ride. Unlike smaller play areas, it’s tough to keep an eye on junior the entire time, but the structure is sturdy enough for adults should you want or need to venture in. (Psst… bracelets are provided for adults and kids alike to monitor comings and goings). A loud ball blaster section allows for aiming at targets or the foam balls can be piled into an air fountain.

Extras
The Funtastic Playtorium features a dedicated and larger-than-usual toddler area with soft climbers, blocks and even a slow-moving climb-through wheel. The whirling octopus is a major crowd pleaser for toddlers and is located outside of the climbing structure (a definite plus as the Littles warm up to venturing into the vast, enclosed climbing area).

Billing itself as the only indoor playground “where everything moves, spins, or flies,” Busy Bees is NoVa’s newest indoor escape for antsy 48”-and-under tots. Cue the happy dancing by mamas, papas, and caregivers everywhere. We get it.

So Fresh and So Clean
Located in a Falls Church strip mall adjacent to a pavilion and several lunch spots, the bright white space is largely dedicated to its pristinely-cleaned play equipment—staff uses only “naturally based” Dapple products to keep germs at bay. First-timers: anticipate spending a few minutes completing a safety waiver, and be sure that you and your child are wearing socks (there are also fun pairs for sale). Adults and children under one are free; entry for each older child is $15 and includes all-day, in-and-out privileges. For parents and caregivers looking to fill the late-afternoon witching hour, weekday admission from 4 pm-5 pm is only $10.

Choices, Choices
Features include a padded jungle gym, rotating carousel suspension swing, electric see-saw, slide, blocks and puzzles space, and merry-go-round.  The pièces de resistance, however, are the elevated, clear-bottomed trampoline and a net-enclosed balloon room. Shrieks and laughter abound.

And…Break!
Outside of the safety latch-locking half-wall surrounding the primary play space are padded stools for break time (there are a few snacks available for purchase, but outside food is also permitted) and several suspended pod swings. Cubby holes for shoes and personal belongings line the walls. Toward the back are bathrooms (ask a staff member for diapers or wipes if you forgot your stash at home) and a station with complimentary tea and coffee. There is also a party room available for rent; prices range from $220-$550. Stay tuned: The party room will soon host ballet and Music Together classes.
