Feeding a baby new to the solid-food scene? Trying to nourish an on-the-move toddler? If you’re not already hooked on pouches, here are five reasons why you should try them.

Convenience

If you’ve taken on the task of handcrafting your baby’s meals – chopping, steaming and pureeing every veggie and fruit under the sun – you’ll love how easy it is to grab a pouch. Sure, you didn’t make it fresh from your garden-grown organic crop, but there are many organic brands with little to no added ingredients that offer a very healthy supplement. So when you’re short on time or on-the-go, pouches are the best.

At the beginning, you’ll probably need to help your newbie eater get the good stuff out of the pouch. You can either squeeze the puree out onto a spoon, or buy a special spoon attachment that universally fits on the end of the pouch. Try Munchkin Click Lock Food Pouch Spoons (pictured above) that come with covers for the spoons, just in case your baby doesn’t finish it all in one sitting.

Later, your baby will be able to feed himself the pouch making it a generally mess-free (aside from the occasional time your baby decides to squeeze it before placing it in her mouth) and beyond easy snack or meal.

Speed

Before your baby can use a spoon to feed himself, he can hold a pouch and suck all of the goodness out of it all by himself. That’s right, your babe can eat sweet potato puree solo. This is a miracle. Now, while he chows down, you can be pushing the stroller, feeding your older child, making yourself a well-deserved meal, or whatever you need to do. And, most babies slurp these down fast. In a matter of seconds he can have polished off a serving of healthy, organic veggies and all you had to do was pop the top.

Portability

While you need to keep any homemade purees cold on the go, pouches are shelf stable, meaning you can toss them in your diaper bag without a cold pack. That said, once opened, they do need to be refrigerated and consumed within 24 hours.

Nutrition

Pouches can add new foods and nutrients to your baby’s diet. You might not puree beets yourself, or make a mix with kale and chick peas, but you can find these ingredients mixed together in baby food pouches. This means you can serve a greater variety of flavors and produce. Plus, some pouches, like Plum Organics Mighty Veggie and Happy Family’s Love My Veggies (part of the Made to Matter Handpicked by Target line) boast a full serving of vegetables.

DIY Ability

Love making your own baby food and knowing exactly what’s inside? You can make your own pouches too! You can fill these adorable, reusable Squooshi pouches (pictured above)with your own purees or smoothies – get creative with your own healthy and yummy blends featuring your baby’s favorite flavors. Cleaning isn’t as tough as you might think, thanks to a bottom zipper that opens the pouch up wide. While you could use a funnel, pastry bag or steady hand and pouring from a pitcher, to make things easier, a special pouch filling station is offered. Another option is to go with the Infantino Fresh Squeezed Station, which helps you quickly fill BPA-free one-time-use plastic pouches.

What’s your baby’s favorite pouch? Tell us in a Comment.

The great state of Georgia is filled with things to do and places to see—including seven of its own natural wonders! From wild horses to wonderful waterfalls, we’ve put together a summer bucket list of spots to take the tots before school starts.

Cumberland Island
Nature reigns on Georgia’s largest barrier island. Known for roaming feral horses, undeveloped beaches and wide marshes—the island once owned by the Carnegie family is rampant with old world charm. Only accessible by boat, the seashore is lined with remains of historic mansions and landmarks, such as the Dungeness and Plum Orchard. Home to at least 23 distinct ecological communities, a maximum of 300 people are allowed on the island at a time. Ferries to the island leave from St. Marys and reservations are highly recommended. There’s a small fee for the ferry and entrance onto the island, but you can camp for cheap at a variety of sites.

Sapelo Island
Georgia’s fourth largest barrier island and, perhaps, the most pristine and historic. It’s believed to have roots that trace some back 4,500 years ago. In Sapelo’s 464-acre Hog Hammock community live roughly 47 descendants of West African slaves, known as (remember that show Gullah Gullah Island?) Gullah, or Geechee, peoples who have retained their African traditions. There are also salt marshes, beach sand dunes and maritime forests on this island, also only accessible by passenger ferry.

Tallulah Falls
The picturesque beauty of Tallulah Gorge State Park is one that leaves most speechless. Regarded as one of the most spectacular canyons in the eastern United States (and another one of Georgia’s seven natural wonders), the gorge stretches nearly two miles and features rocky cliffs up to 1,000 feet high. Through it run a series of six different waterfalls, dropping a total of 490 feet. Perfect for kayakers and hiking enthusiasts, it’s also stroller-friendly. A paved path follows an old railroad bed up the 10-mile trail.

Providence Canyon State Park
Who needs the Grand Canyon when you have Providence Canyon, often called Georgia’s “Little Grand Canyon.” Regarded as one of the state seven natural wonders, it’s actually not entirely natural. The massive gullies were formed as a result of erosion on account of poor farming practices in the 19th century. Still, the awe remains at the beauty of the canyon and the very rare plumleaf azaleas surrounding it. If your little one is a car lover, there’s also an abandoned homestead of a dozen rusty 1950’s cars and trucks park officials have decided to leave as-is.

Broxton Rocks
Once a hidden secret, known only by those in Coffee and Jeff Davis counties, Broxton Rocks is an anomaly of sandstone ledges, caves and 30-foot high cliffs. Nothing like anything you’d ever expect see in Georgia. It’s also home to rare species of plants and animals, such as the indigo snake. Green-fly orchids that normally only grow on trees – they grow on rocks here.  Because it’s such a special place, Broxton Rocks is a guided tour, by appointment only deal – with a few exceptions. During the summer months, June through August, a one-mile trail from the preserve gate to the falls is open to the public.

RT: What neighborhood/borough do you live in?

KC: Terra Linda

RT: What is your favorite “escape hatch” to get some “me” time and recharge?

KC: Years ago, I studied yoga and I try to sneak in a 30-minute session in the mornings before my 2 year old daughter wakes up. I also love to go on long runs or hikes by myself. It helps me clear my mind and I often come up with great ideas.

RT: What does the perfect Bay Area Sunday morning look like?

KC: Almost every Sunday is a perfect Sunday for me because I get to do what I love to do. Morning typically starts with morning snuggle with my family and then I teach a Stroller Strides class, which is a fitness class that moms can do with their Stroller aged children. Sundays is a special class for the whole family and so not only do I get to see my lovely mom’s but I also get to see many of the dad’s. Classes are twice the size and twice the fun! After class we walk over to the Civic Center farmer’s market to eat a yummy lunch and buy fresh fruits and veggies for the week.

RT: What is your latest obsession?

KC: On a recent trip to Sweden visiting my family and friends, I was connected with Sami Pharmacy. They offer a variety of organic super foods such as crowberries and wild blue berries. I am obsessed with their yummy products so much that now I’m going to be distributing their wonderful products here in the US.

RT: What’s your secret to balancing work and family life?

KC: The secret is that I have an amazing job, which allows me to integrate business, family, friends and fun all in one. I can bring my daughter when I teach my classes. She is my little workout buddy. My husband is also very supportive and appreciative of all the hard work I do in the home and for my company. Most importantly, I love what I do and so it really doesn’t feel like work.

RT: What is your proudest parenting moment so far?

KC: It is impossible to only mention one moment. There are so many little moments every day that make me so proud of my daughter. She shows a great deal of empathy towards other people, eats leafy green salads, helps me make lunches for her dad… the list goes on!
