Hey mamas,

Anyone else out there feel like they are on the COVID “no” train with their kids?

“No, you can’t have a sleepover but your friends can stay as late as they want.”

“No, your friends can’t hang out in your bedroom right now but you can hang out in our heated garage.”

“No, your friends can’t come inside the house and no, you can’t go inside your friend’s house.”

Friends, I’m exhausted talking to my teenagers about this and I’m weary that this has gone on for so long.

To be quite honest, I’m over this.

What I thought was going to be a few days off from school is now approaching the ten-month mark but I know deep inside, I have to remain positive and stay grounded to keep our family safe.

But today I was also reminded, from a stranger, how I have to remain diligent as a mom.

A delivery person called to confirm a flower delivery and began to pour out his heart, sharing with me how he lost his dad to COVID.

His dad was a healthy 72-year-old man who, within days, was placed on a ventilator and never came out of the hospital.

This young man was weepy sharing his story. He willingly opened up his deepest wounds about how he was able to hold his dad’s hand and how he is one of the lucky ones since his dad didn’t die alone.

This man’s personal encounter with COVID needed to be heard through my Bluetooth, in the car, for my teens to hear.

His message was needed as my girls too often forget why we are sacrificing being indoors and sleepovers with friends right now.

One day though, it won’t be this hard.

And on the days I begin to feel filled with frustration, I simply need to go back to this phone call.

My answer of “no”, is to keep our neighbors safe. My answer of “no” is to protect the health of my family members. My answer of “no” is often not the path other people are taking, and at times it’s not fun, but the big picture is more important to me. I just hope one day my teenagers see this as well.

So for now, I have to remain confident and comfortable being the “no” mom.

But I sure do miss our old ways. I miss the girls having friends over laughing in the kitchen and hearing all about college applications and life in high school while munching on endless bags of chips.

I miss making waffles, the morning after a sleepover and watching the girls walk downstairs in their oversized sweatshirts and messy buns.

I miss the hustle and bustle of what my house once was. It was a place where kids were in and out all of the time, side doors slamming and laughing. Lots and lots of laughing.

But I really miss saying yes.

These girls miss their friends and sleepovers.

I am really patiently waiting for the day I can start to say “yes” again and again and again.

Yes, to the sleepovers.

Yes, to the snuggles on the couch, with a friend, watching a movie, and sharing a bowl of popcorn.

Yes, to a handful of teenagers hanging out in the kitchen eating whatever leftovers I have in the fridge.

Who knew one simple word could mean so much?

I see the light and know the bend in the road is coming soon. The road we all miss and hold close to our hearts in memory, but also a road that will be the same, yet different, once we embark on it again.

So for now, I will continue to look forward to the day I can say “yes.”

A “yes” that is filled with every ounce of confidence, stored within this heart of mine, knowing my family and all those around me will remain safe.

Walt Disney World fans rejoice! As the phased reopening of the resort continues guests will be happy to know that the Park Hopper option will be returning in the new year. According to the Disney Blog, starting Jan. 1, 2021, guests who purchased a ticket or annual pass with Park Hopper benefits will be able to visit more than one park per day, with a few modifications.

Walt Disney World

Guests must make a Disney Park Pass reservation for the first park they plan to visit and enter that park first prior to visiting another. Currently a park reservation is not required after the first park, however reservation requirements are subject to change.

The resort will set specific Park Hopper hours during which this option will be available. Park Hopper hours will begin at 2 p.m. each day and end at the park’s scheduled close time. Guests will soon be able to check DisneyWorld.com/ParkHours and the My Disney Experience app for the most up-to-date Park Hopper hours, as they could start earlier at a later date, depending on the day and park. The ability to visit another park will be subject to the park’s capacity limitations.

These modifications are designed to help the resort to continue managing attendance in a way that fosters physical distancing. Additionally, other enhanced health and safety measures remain in effect. Face coverings are required for all guests ages two and up.

If you have any questions, visit the Know Before You Go page on DisneyWorld.com, call the Disney Reservation Center, contact your travel professional or reach out to planDisney to get helpful tips and information on your upcoming Disney vacation.

Disney World Delays Some Resort Hotel Reopenings

Walt Disney World Resort Introduces New System for Reserving Theme Park Visits

Big Changes Are Coming to Walt Disney World: Here’s What You Need to Know

How to Start Making Life Happen for You

Something I’ve seen time and time again is this idea about life happening to you. Be patient. Success is coming. Sit still and listen. Wait your turn. You don’t have to do anything outside of being willing to accept success. Wait, wait, wait.

I don’t just disagree with this mindset, I abhor it, and here’s why: I saw a quote recently and it said “Nobody cares about your excuses. Nobody pities you for procrastinating. Nobody is going to coddle you because you’re lazy. It’s your a$$, you move it.” Read that last part again, “It’s your a$$, you move it.”

Now, I don’t feed into the COVID excuse. I really don’t. I think this is a time to be creative and learn how to adapt your business to a changing world. I also think it’s a time to preemptively strike on the things that will remain different until they become the same. After 9/11, the world changed. We changed how we walked through airports, our check-ins for building security became much more stringent and our overall awareness in public multiplied by the thousands. We don’t even remember what it was like before that. I don’t know the last time I was in Penn Station without a military presence. This is no different. While we will return to many things that feel normal, there will ultimately be things that never change back and, quite frankly, shouldn’t. I don’t need to share a meal with the table next to me at a restaurant. I like my space. My point is, this is a time for growth. It is not a time to make excuses.

So, how do we remain productive or even better, how do we become productive (maybe even for the first time) as our world shifts? How do we take ownership and responsibility for ourselves when the world is seemingly saying “Oprah wasn’t successful until she was in her 30’s. Wait.” Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Oprah worked her a$$ off before her wild success started. Michael Jordan may have cried after being cut from his high school basketball team, but it drove him to work harder. He practiced more. Steve Jobs was fired but didn’t wait for someone to hand him his next company. He put his big boy pants on and did the damn thing. Your life is not a meme. It cannot be summed up by the minimized paths to success that celebrities took. Let me be clear, I’m not saying we should just work, work, work. My advice is to use this changing time to figure out what feels right to you and create an action plan to make it happen. I cannot shout it louder, success will not just happen to you. You have to be an active and vigilant participant in your own life.

Because I hate when people offer advice without action, so here’s a checklist of things to do:

1. Always have a five-year plan. I don’t mean pie in the sky, I mean a logistically-driven, actionable plan. Edit that five-year plan once a year.

2. Set big goals. You can’t change your life without knowing what that looks like. Achievement comes in all different forms, true satisfaction comes from setting metrics and hitting them.

3. When you hit your goals, set more and set them bigger. Success was never driven by setting small goals. It doesn’t benefit us to goal ourselves on things we already know we can do.

4. Play on your strengths. Comfort zones can be a great thing. I know my strengths and I know my weaknesses. I use both to my advantage by doing the things I’m good at and doing them really, really well. I also know it’s important to push past my comfort zone and turn some of those weaknesses into strengths.

5. Speaking of weaknesses, choose a few. We’re only human. It’s impossible to master everything, all the time. Take a look at your weaknesses and focus on turning around the ones that most closely tied to your version of success.

6. Lastly, get to know yourself. It’s really hard to understand what you want out of life if you don’t even understand who you are. Know what makes you tick, know what makes you happy, know what you want.

I’ll leave with you this: One of my favorite things to witness on the planet is other people’s success. I love hearing goals and then seeing people crush them. There is infinite room for success in our world and, if I can help someone achieve their success, I’m all in. Life is about partnering with the right people, at the right time. Life is about asking questions and asking for help when you need it. If you read this and feel like I’m someone who can help you, reach out. I’m open. Let’s murder the mindset of life happening to us and start making life happen.

Distance learning brings with it many challenges, but now Adobe is looking to make the transition a little easier. Adobe is offering Creative Cloud application access at no additional charge to all students and teachers from Aug. 24, 2020 through Jan. 31, 2021 for current U.S. K-12 volume license customers. New U.S. K-12 Creative Cloud customers can also take advantage of these cost-savings by purchasing a volume license for their school or district, giving access (including at-home) to all students and teachers at no additional charge.

We are accustomed to a classroom model for education. Our new reality of distance and hybrid learning is changing the way institutions operate, how educators teach and how student  success is measured and achieved.

Distance learning

For decades, Adobe has partnered with educators and education leaders and they remain committed to helping foster positive student outcomes amidst this changing landscape. This latest offer builds on a series of education initiatives put in place throughout this year.

For higher education and 2020 college graduates, Adobe is granting free access to Adobe Portfolio for one year to help them demonstrate their creative skills, which are essential differentiators in today’s fast evolving job landscape.

For parents and educators (K-12 and higher education), Adobe’s Distance Learning Hub provides practical teaching and learning resources. This includes unique curricula such as Khan + Create, a creative lesson plan on the Adobe Education Exchange developed in partnership with the Khan Academy.

The newly launched Adobe Creative Educator program also connects educators around the world and helps them learn how to foster critical skills like creativity in remote learning environments.

Additional resources for educators and parents can be found on AdobeForEducation.com, including industry-leading research on creative problem solving and the creative skills gap in today’s workforce.

There are so many new and beloved animals to visit at the San Diego Zoo––including the adorable black-footed cat kittens: female Skyler (top) and male Ryder (bottom) that are growing fast. Don't let their sweet looks fool you. Even though they are one of the smallest cat's one earth they are referred to as
“the world’s deadliest cat.” While these kittens and their mother will remain off public view for now, two adult black-footed cats—male Sawyer and female Yuna—can be seen in their habitat at the Safari Park’s Nairobi Village. With their keen sense of hearing and smell, these cats' predation success rate of 60 percent is the highest of any feline. In a single night, one black-footed cat can consume up to 14 rodents and birds!

Platypuses also now call the Safari Park home, so be sure to visit them at their habitat in Walkabout Australia. Countless additional extraordinary animals await your visit too! Tigers, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, cheetahs, gorillas and more!

Aquarium of the Pacific - Long Beach

Take a deep dive into the outdoor exhibits at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, which is open through July 24. Although the indoor exhibits remain closed, there's still plenty to see outside. Kids can touch a moon jellyfish—the delicate translucent sea creatures drift in a pool near the entrance—along with a variety or rays and maybe even a shark. Another must-see? The Lorikeet Forest, where you can purchase a cup of nectar for $4 and make your way through the aviary as the colorful birds land on your for a sip. In addition to these interactive exhibits, kids can also see penguins, seals and sea lions diving through the water and splashing around.

Tickets with a timed entry are $12 (children 2 and under are free), and must be purchased in advance. We recommend booking an early time as the touch pools can get crowded even with social distancing markers displayed on the grounds.

8 Spontaneous Ways to Have Fun Outdoors with the Kids

It was just two weeks ago that Disneyland announced its proposed plan to reopen, but new word from the state of California has the theme park pumping the brakes. This week, the state announced it will not issue theme park reopening guidelines until at least Jul. 4.

With the Disneyland Resort employing thousands of union workers, the new timeline simply won’t allow enough time to organize contracts that will allow cast members to return to work and jumpstart park operations by Jul. 9. Both hotel and theme park operations will be impacted by the delay as Disney eagerly awaits guidelines coming down from the state.

The Downtown Disney District will remain on track and reopen on Jul. 9. This area had already been approved to open as it falls under restaurant and retail openings that have been allowed under California phased reopening guidelines.

In the meantime, Disney continues to negotiate contracts with unions so that cast members can return to work as soon as allowed. Currently, 20 union affiliates have already signed agreements, meaning as soon as the parks reopen, they’ll be ready!
