With a slate of family-friendly flicks at the newest pop-up drive-in and a dino-mite drive-thru experience coming to the Rose Bowl, we are so ready for 2021. And we’re hopeful that many of our favorite outdoor destinations (like the L.A. Zoo and Aquarium of the Pacific) will reopen in the coming weeks. Read on for all the fun things that we can’t wait to do in the year ahead, plus get tips for staying connected in the meantime.

While we're hopeful that many of our favorite annual LA events will be happening later on in the year, there are no guarantees. But we do at least know that the upcoming Jurassic Quest Drive-Thru is a go! The event will take place at Pasadena's Rose Bowl Stadium, from Jan. 15-Jan. 31. Tickets are already on sale for the hourlong experience, which features over 70 life-like, animatronic dinosaurs.

Park at a Drive-In

In January, The Little Mermaid, Cars, Toy Story 4 and more will be showing at LA's newest pop-up drive-in, Rooftop Cinemas at the Santa Monica Airport. If you haven't made it to a drive-in yet, don't miss this opportunity. Bring blankets and pillows, pop open your trunk and let the kids settle in for a throwback big-screen experience.

Meet the Newest Animals at the LA Zoo

On Dec.7, the Los Angeles Zoo closed due to the latest Stay at Home orders. (It had reopened back in October, with time entries, limited capacity and additional safety guidelines in place.) The Zoo announced that it would be closed for a minimum of three weeks. We're hopeful that it will open at some point later in January or February of 2021. And we can't wait to meet this little baby langur monkey who is giving us major Baby Yoda vibes. Also new to the zoo? An itty-bitty California Condor chick.

Dine Out (While Wearing Masks)

As Angelenos, we're fortunate enough to be able to enjoy outdoor dining pretty much year-round. Although even dining al fresco at our favorite restaurants is off-limits for now. But when it's once again safe to do so, we'll be visiting our favorite kid-friendly outdoor patios at these LA restaurants

Feed the Moon Jellyfish at Aquarium of the Pacific

Long Beach's Aquarium of the Pacific was one of the first destinations to reopen this summer. Even with the indoor areas of the Aquarium closed, there was still plenty to see outdoors, including a Moon Jelly Touch Lab is, Stingray Touch Pool and Lorikeet Forest. Like the L.A. Zoo, the Aquarium announced in early December that it would be closed for at least three weeks. Until it reopens, we'll be zoning out with the Aquarium's animal webcams—we dare you not to feel more relaxed after watching these jellyfish drifting in the water.

Leisure travel is restricted for now, so even our jaunt to a nearby cabin rental had to be postponed. Once we get the green light, we can't wait to road trip it outta town.

Create with Cayton Creators

Cayton Children's Museum in Santa Monica put their weekly outdoor event, Cayton Creators, on pause at the beginning of December. But we're optimistic it will be back in the new year. Check here for updates.

And some day… (hopefully sooner rather than later)

Ride the Santa Monica Pier Carousel

Mike McBey via flickr

We're feeling nostalgic for the iconic merry-go-round, which hasn't seen any riders since pre-pandemic days. While all the rides on the pier are also closed, the pier itself is at least open if you want to take a stroll along the historic landmark.

Board the Trains in Travel Town

Old train cars to explore, lots of grass to run around, a mini locomotive to ride—this is toddler heaven and we can't wait for it to reopen. Until then, we'll be exploring the trails of Griffith Park (and beyond)

Make a Splash at Kidspace

One of our favorite museums for kids has been closed for way too long. As much as we love all the online content they're giving us, we can't wait to be there again IRL.

Have a Ball at an Indoor Playground

Best Indoor Playgrounds in LA

Let's be honest: Ball pits were already a germaphobes worst nightmare, even if kids can't get enough of them. Maybe one day when the pandemic is behind us, we'll be able to watch our little ones slide into a mass of plastic balls and only cringe a little.

EPCOT isn’t the only Disney theme park getting an update. While Disneyland remains closed due to the pandemic, Imagineers have been hard at work giving Snow White’s Scary Adventures a major overhaul.

The only only ride-through princess attraction at Disneyland has been reimagined and renamed as Snow White’s Enchanted Wish and it finally gives Snow White the happy ending she deserves. Keep scrolling to get a first look at the park’s “new” attraction.

Imagineers used this time to update the Fantasyland attraction which last received an update in the 80’s. The ride uses state-of-the-art audio and visual technology, new music, LED black lighting, laser projections and a new animation system which brings the experience into the 21st century.

While there’s no word yet on when the park will reopen, when it does, Snow White will be ready for guests.

Big Changes Are Coming to Walt Disney World: Here’s What You Need to Know

3 More Universal Studios Parks to Open June 5

More and more attractions and theme parks are slowly starting to reopen. Sesame Place just announced a phased reopening, with capacity limitations, on Jul. 24. The reopening of the park will include strictly enforced and enhanced health and safety protocols for cleaning and sanitizing, physical distancing, face covering requirements, and temperature screening. A new online reservation system will also help manage capacity so that guests can enjoy a safe and fun experience while maintaining physical distancing.

The phased reopening plan was approved by the state of Pennsylvania.

Sesame Place

“We thank Governor Wolf for his support of tourism in Pennsylvania as we prepare to reopen Sesame Place on July 24,” said Marc Swanson, interim CEO of SeaWorld Entertainment, Inc. “We have worked diligently with state and local health officials, outside consultants and attraction industry leaders to enhance our already strict health, safety and cleanliness standards. These protocols and guidelines will be modified based on evolving industry standards and methodologies, public health and governmental directives, and advancing scientific knowledge on the transmissibility of COVID-19.”

“We’re thrilled to reopen our park and celebrate our 40th birthday this year,” said Cathy Valeriano, president of Sesame Place. “We know our guests are eager to return and we are just as excited to continue to provide them with fun, inspiring and memorable experiences, while taking the necessary steps to make families feel safe when they visit our park during this milestone year and beyond.”

Sesame Place has detailed safety information about the measures that guests can expect when the park reopens, including key operational changes. Specific information can be found by visiting sesameplace.com/philadelphia/park-info/park-safety/.

Specific enhancements to key operational areas include:

  •       Guest Arrivals & Ticketing – Enhanced cleaning protocols will be implemented at arrival areas and for high-contact surfaces. Spacing will be increased for our touchless turnstiles enabling appropriate physical distancing.

  •       Restaurants – Restaurants at the park will include arranged seating layouts to accommodate physical distancing. Tables and chairs will be sanitized with increased frequency, condiment and topping stations will be closed, utensils will be pre-packaged, and guests with refillable products will be provided single-use alternatives. Buffet-style service areas will be adjusted or closed until further notice.

  •       Retail Shops – In our retail shops, we will have markings for physical distancing and signage directing guests to defined entrances and exits. To minimize contact of items at checkout, bagging and wrapping materials will be given to customers.

  •       Public Spaces – Across the park and especially in high-contact areas, enhanced cleaning protocols will be implemented. This includes an increased number of hand sanitizer stations, areas with single-direction guest flow, modified seating in venues to maintain physical distancing and cleaning according to enhanced protocols. Lounge chair seating will also be modified to maintain physical distancing.

  •       Rides & Attractions – Queue lines for all rides will have markings for physical distancing and modified seating will be implemented to maintain physical distancing. We will have hand sanitizer available at the entrance and exit of all rides and will increase the frequency of cleaning and sanitizing. Specific protocols will be implemented for water rides for employees and guests and unless play areas meet distancing protocols, they will be temporarily closed. For a list of temporary changes and attraction closures, please visit the attractions page on the website.

  •       Parade, Shows and Meet-and-Greets – Depending on the ability to ensure physical distancing for guests and team members, certain components of shows and meet-and-greets, such as those involving guest interactions, character interactions and photo opportunities will be modified or removed. Parades will be temporarily unavailable. For more information on the parade, shows and character meet-and-greets, please visit the shows & parade page on the website.

To help manage capacity to maintain physical distancing within the park, advance online reservations will be required. 2020 Season Pass Holders will enjoy an exclusive reservation time that opens at 9 a.m. on Jul. 20.  Reservations for single day ticket holders will be available starting at 10 a.m. on the same day.  Starting TODAY through Jul. 26, guests can take advantage of the ‘Sunny Days on the Way!’ sale with admission starting as low as $39.99.  Please visit sesameplace.com/Philadelphia/reservation for more details.

LEGO Announces Support for Children and Families Impacted by COVID-19

It was just two weeks ago that Disneyland announced its proposed plan to reopen, but new word from the state of California has the theme park pumping the brakes. This week, the state announced it will not issue theme park reopening guidelines until at least Jul. 4.

With the Disneyland Resort employing thousands of union workers, the new timeline simply won’t allow enough time to organize contracts that will allow cast members to return to work and jumpstart park operations by Jul. 9. Both hotel and theme park operations will be impacted by the delay as Disney eagerly awaits guidelines coming down from the state.

photo: Christian Thompson via Disneyland Resort

The Downtown Disney District will remain on track and reopen on Jul. 9. This area had already been approved to open as it falls under restaurant and retail openings that have been allowed under California phased reopening guidelines.

In the meantime, Disney continues to negotiate contracts with unions so that cast members can return to work as soon as allowed. Currently, 20 union affiliates have already signed agreements, meaning as soon as the parks reopen, they’ll be ready!
