The US Consumer Product Safety Commission recently announced a recall for the IKEA KULLEN 3-drawer chest. The recalled chest is unstable if it is not anchored to the wall, posing tip-over and entrapment hazards that may result in death or serious injuries to children.  Additionally, KULLEN 3-drawer chests imported after August 12, 2019 do not comply with the performance requirements of the updated version of the U.S. consensus standard (ASTM 2057-19).

KULLEN IKEA Recall

IKEA has received six reports of tip-over incidents involving KULLEN 3-drawer chests that were not anchored to the wall, including one report involving a minor cut and one report involving minor cuts and bruises.

The recall includes the following product numbers:

  • 600-930-58 (birch)
  • 501-637-54 (black-brown)
  • 803-221-34 (black-brown)

The KULLEN 3-drawer chest weighs about 45 pounds and is about 28.5 inches tall. A 5-digit supplier number, 4-digit date stamp, IKEA logo, country of origin and “KULLEN” are printed on the underside of the top panel or inside the side panel.

These dressers were sold exclusively at IKEA stores nationwide and online from April 2005 to December 2019 for about $60.

Consumers should immediately stop using the KULLEN 3-drawer chest if not properly anchored to the wall and place it into an area that children cannot access. Consumers should call IKEA’s toll-free recall hotline at 888-966-4532 from 9 am to 10 pm ET or go online to for more information on how to receive a refund or a free wall-anchoring repair kit. Consumers can install the anchor themselves or IKEA will provide a one-time, free in-home installation service, upon request.

IKEA will accept in-store returns or arrange for free pick up of the chests for a full refund.

We are in the thick of winter so we are craving more sunlight and warmer temps. For now, however, we’ll have to deal with the uninspired forecasts. In addition to the lackluster weather, we are in a constant battle to keep the cold and flu germs away. And if you have lost that battle, you are not alone my friend. I am here to admit that I recently had a house full of moderately ill little ones. In fact, I too fell ill. And it was horrendous. I was weak and barely dragging myself around while my kiddies had all the energy in the world. Literally, if it weren’t for their runny noses, you wouldn’t have been able to tell they were sick. But as a mama (or papa) you still have to go on. Life doesn’t stop just because you’re sick. So how did I make it through? I’ll share my simple tips:

1. Rest. This may seem obvious to some but there are those out there who will still try to do everything they usually do while they are sick. Listen, your body is trying to heal and repair itself. It’s ok to slow down a bit. You won’t be able to completely stop, especially if you have toddlers but you can at least modify what you would usually do. And speaking of toddlers, communicate with them that you aren’t feeling too well. I did just that with my four-year-old and it helped her to understand why mommy wasn’t as energetic as usual.

2. Get help. Whether it’s a family member, neighbor or friend, you may need some backup. My husband was able to stay home one of the days I was sick and it helped tremendously! Just having another adult in the house allowed me to let my guard down even more. I napped when the kids were up- something I obviously wouldn’t be able to do had he not been there. Getting help could also mean ordering out or having sandwiches for dinner. Again, don’t pressure yourself into your usual way of doing things.

3. Get some fresh air ASAP. Chances are that if you get sick, you’re going to be stuck in the house for a few days—not fun. So as soon as you start to feel a little better, get some fresh air. Even if it’s to just go on your front steps for a few moments—bundle up and enjoy some sun rays.

4. Remember that this too shall pass. When you’re in the thick of the battle, it can seem like it’ll last forever. But before you know it, you’ll be back on your feet like new. So don’t let yourself get down. Go through the process and allow yourself to properly heal.

I hope these simple tips help. They may not change the weather but they’ll keep you going when the cold and flu bug tries to stop you.

Recalled Product Description: General Motors Trucks and SUVs

There are several makes and models of General Motors vehicles involved in the recall including the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickups from the 2014 through 2018 model years. The recall also covers the Cadillac Escalade from 2015 to 2017, and the GMC Yukon and Chevy Suburban and Tahoe from 2015 through 2018.

Why the Vehicles Were Recalled

According to General Motors, as the vehicles age the pump in the power-assist brakes can put out less vacuum power than needed, increasing stopping distance and the risk of a crash. According to GM the problems occur rarely and mostly at low speeds. So far only nine crashes have been reported, two of which caused injuries. The recalled vehicles will need to have their electronic brake control modules recalibrated to repair the issue.

How to Tell If Your Vehicle Was Recalled

Vehicle owners are being notified directly by General Motors, but you can also check to see if yours is part of the recall by entering your VIN number on the GM website here.

What Consumers Can Do

Check your VIN number on the GM site and contact your local dealer for more information on completing the required repair. The repairs will be completed with cost to customers.

Buying the latest tech gadgets is anything but cheap. Still, technology has become a major part of modern life. Thus, it is practically impossible to live without it. However, if you are resourceful, there are a wide range of effective ways in which you can reduce the money you spend on gadgets. Get acquainted with five simple tips to do that.

Sell Your Old Devices

Before thinking about purchasing the latest iPhone or tablet, you should first think about selling or trading your old device, as there is a wide range of retailers that offer you this opportunity. The newer your gadget is, the more credit you can receive in exchange. You should consider opting for companies that offer credit in exchange, as there are others that typically provide users with gift cards. Another way you can earn money after your older device is selling it on eBay.

Determine Your Needs

Before considering updating your gadgets, you should determine the amount of storage space you genuinely need. This way, you won’t get tricked by a clever salesperson to purchase more than you need. Your gadget purchases ought to meet your individual requirements; there’s no reason to buy expensive gadgets if you don’t have use of it.

Consider Online Shopping

If you didn’t consider online shopping before, it’s time you did that. Shopping online offers you the possibility to browse for hours before deciding on a particular product and get acquainted with the price range, particular properties and everything you need to know about the gadget you have in mind. Even though it requires a lot of your patience, it’s significantly convenient as online shopping offers you a wide range of great deals and coupons you can take advantage of.

When Possible, Opt for Free Software

Whether you were aware of the fact that you can opt for free software or not, there is a wide range of online services that provide users with free, equally effective free services. This software offers the same functions without additional, exorbitant costs. Still, while this alternative is not always available, you should always browse for obtaining products that meet your needs for lower costs. Simply reimburse yourself with patience and start browsing online.

Consider Skipping the Extended Warranty

While some people consider extended warranty to be an official guarantee that their products will be protected for a longer amount of time, the truth is that the steep prices to extended warranty cost increasingly more than the amount of money you would pay in the worst case scenario where you have to fix your gadget. As a matter of fact, retailers make larger sums of money from selling extended warranty than from the product themselves. Most of your gadgets will work perfectly, and in case they break down, the amount of money you saved will imminently cover the possible expenses associated with repair. Skipping extended warranty will undoubtedly help you save money, that’s a given.

As a parent, keeping your child safe is understandably your utmost priority. That’s why when buying products for your little ones, it’s definitely important that you know what you’re buying and have peace of mind that you can trust the source or brand of the thing you’re buying. The last thing you want is to give your child a toy they adore and get attached to, only for it to be recalled two weeks later.

But sadly, some things aren’t up to snuff.

A recall can be a nightmare for a parent, not only being forced to rip the possession away from their child, but also planting fear that the product has harmed their child in the process. In fact, there are a number of recall trends like this that have come up over the last decade. Nearly one-third of all recalls are in the children’s product market, so being informed is key to avoiding dangerous products.

So, Why are Products Recalled?

While some children’s products are recalled for simple reasons that may not phase you like some kind of obscure federal regulation, other reasons can pose very serious concerns. When a product doesn’t get used exactly how the retailer intended, it can result in choking, strangulation, entrapment, or laceration. Those experiences are no joke, which is to say that no matter how intelligent your little one may be, a defective toy can have some dangerous effects that certainly should not be risked.

Amazon is the Leading Retailer with Recalls

Of all children’s recalls, just under 17% of them derived from popular online retailer Amazon.com. We all know and love how convenient Amazon is. You can order while you’re making dinner, you can order while you’re trying to put the babies to sleep…you name it. But while this site is incredibly convenient for parents to shop without taking too much time out of their busy lifest‌yle, it is incredibly important to read the product details and reviews in full so that consumers know exactly what they are purchasing for their child.

The only other retailer responsible for over 10% of children’s products recalls was former Toys-R-Us with 118 recalls in the past decade. Other retailers that make up the top five in recalls include Target, Walmart, and Kohls. It’s safe to say it would be wise to keep these recalls in mind the next time you’re shopping for something for your little one.

The Most Common Response is a Refund.

While retailers and manufacturers can respond in a variety of ways when they realize there was an oversight, the most common response is to refund the consumers. This is the most common response especially when a product is recalled for choking, ingestion, fire, or federal reasons.

Other popular methods of dealing with the issue is to replace or repair the product. Manufacturers can also opt to provide new instructions, labels or advise people to dispose of the merchandise. For products recalled for strangulation, lead violation or entrapment, the solution was often unspecified.

The moment manufacturers realize their product could place consumers in the eye of danger, they will quickly take action to minimize future damages. This is why it’s so important to pay attention to recalls and instructions of the companies who created the gadget.

While no parent can be perfect, being an informed parent gives you just one more tool to plant under your belt to deal with whatever life throws at your family. You definitely shouldn’t live in fear of a toy lighting on fire and burning your child, but you should pay attention to recalls when they arise. Telling a child they can’t play with their favorite toy anymore can be a difficult task, but it could also be essential to their safety.

Ford Motor Company recently released two separate safety recalls—both of which could cause your car to roll away on its own. In a press release earlier this week, Ford announced that the current recall includes 2,500 2019 Ranger trucks and 259,182 2013 to 2016 Fusion vehicles in the United States.

The recalled 2019 Ranger trucks may have a problem with their transmission shaft cable bracket fasteners. According to Ford, “On some affected vehicles, the two fasteners that secure the transmission shift cable bracket to the transmission housing may not have been torqued to specification. Over time, an improperly torqued fastener could allow the transmission shift cable bracket to become loose and the transmission to be in a gear state different from the gearshift position selected by the driver.”

photo: Courtesy of Ford

If you’re not automotively inclined, the basics are: the improper torque could result in your truck shifting out of park and rolling away. There are no current accidents or injuries reported due to this recall.

Ranger owners with the affected vehicles should call their dealer ASAP, because the dealer will torque the fasteners which will fix the problem. Ford cautions Ranger owners to use the parking brake when the vehicle is parked until they are able to bring the car to the dealer for the repair.

Along with Rangers, Ford’s recall also includes 2013 to 2016 Fusion vehicles. According to a press release, “Ford is issuing a safety recall for select 2013-16 Fusion vehicles with 2.5-liter engines for a shifter cable bushing issue. On affected vehicles, the bushing that attaches the shifter cable may degrade and detach from the transmission.”

While this safety recall differs from the Ranger recall, the end result is the same—the possibility of the car rolling away. Ford’s recall press statement also notes, “The root cause and final service repair are in the process of being confirmed. Dealers and vehicle owners will be instructed to always use the parking brake, and they will be notified when the final remedy is available. The Ford reference number for this recall is 19S16.”
