Hyatt Regency Lake Washington

Julietta Skoog

If the Hyatt Regency Lake Washington was a painting, the title would be "Chillin' by the Lake". Upon entering the vast but welcoming lobby, the lake view and Seattle skyline seem to envelop the back of the hotel, beckoning guests to grab a chair on the outdoor patio and let the relaxation begin. Opened in 2017, this hotel is already a neighborhood favorite and community staple. Brimming with goodies for the little ones, families can check in knowing their vacation or staycation will be spectacular. The safety first, faux-mini fire pit sets the mood and s'mores are just as tasty without the melted chocolate option. Grab pool toys and swimsuits for year-round indoor pool and hot tub splashing, or for lake side leisure in the warmer months. Water's Table is highly recommended as it masters the art of fine dining alongside family feasting. Also recommended to please carnivores is the Akaushi Tomahawk Ribeye, a platter of exquisitely cooked aged marbled beef perfect for groups sharing.

Can't-miss kid perks: Pre-order the Kids Glamping Package for $40. Well worth the delight in their eyes when they open the door and a tepee, replete with cozy pillows, soft blankets and s'mores plate greets them. The kid’s cookie decorating option is a creative way to entertain fidgety diners - it's complimentary so pre-order with ease.

Good to know: Hyatt Regency Lake Washington at Seattle's Southport is conveniently located near Skykart Indoor Racing Center, Henry Moses Aquatic Center and the Museum of Flight for more group entertainment

Kimpton Alexis Hotel

Jennifer Finch/Kimpton Alexis

Seattle is synonymous with great music and downtown Seattle still plays that '90s beat if you listen carefully. The Kimpton Alexis Hotel cherishes its convenient downtown location and proudly displays art that hints to the Emerald City's iconic music scene. Good thing the rooms aren't from that era. The recent $14-million guest room renovation blends the backdrop of the Pacific Northwest with elegant simplicity—the colors seem to flow in from the sky, sound and evergreen trees. Families can experience this and more with the Junior Suite, an 825-square-foot room with elevated living space plus an extra TV and sofa. Plus, who doesn't love dress up fairy wings, dinosaur play sets, giant checkerboard and checkers, movie trivia and books that are among the available delights. For the budding photographer, parents can rent a mini Polaroid camera and film for eight hours of artistic exploration. Whatever you choose, the experience will be stylish and entertaining for the whole fam.

Can't-miss kid perks: Take it up a notch with on-demand packages for kids. The Movie Night Package ($75) delivers a popcorn machine and candy bars for a full theatrical experience. They say the quickest way to a kid’s heart is through his tummy. That’s true where gummy bears and ice cream are concerned, at least. Get your family curious about where their food comes from by taking a factory or warehouse tour. There is a lot of food and drink made in the Chicago area and some manufacturers will take you behind the scenes. Flip through our album to discover tours for fans of candy, coffee and beer (both root and the grownup varieties).

Jelly Belly Warehouse Tour

Quinn Dombrowski

Hop on the Jelly Belly Train (yes, it's a thing) to tour the warehouse and learn through videos how candy corn, jellybeans and gummies are made. Shop the store to enjoy the sample bar, where visitors can taste each flavor as well as any favorite or new confection on the day’s menu. If you find yourself there at lunchtime, small bites are available at the Jelly Belly Snack Bar. Guided tours are scheduled 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and groups of visitors are taken around every 10-15 minutes.

Visitors will learn every aspect of coffee making with live demonstrations of the roasting process and discussions of everything involved between the farmer growing the beans and the coffee being savored in the mug. Enjoy all the freshly brewed coffee you can drink while on the tour and leave with the shakes and a free 12 oz. bag of freshly roasted coffee. Tour admission is $30 for adults and free for children under the age of 13. Tour availability is limited and reservations are highly recommended.

Kids will get a kick out of the 2,500-pound chocolate Statue of Liberty and 500-pound Santa sculptures that greet visitors. The tour starts with a video explaining how chocolate is made and moves on to the kitchen viewing area, were depending on the production schedule, you’ll see anything from caramel being cooked in copper pots to cream and butter filling churning in huge mixers. Watch as staff hand paints colored chocolate into the molds prior to filling, resulting in what looks like miniature pieces of art.

Tours cost $2 per person and are available Monday-Friday. Reservations are required and live production is not guaranteed. Stick around after the tour to shop for treats in their factory store.

Virtuous Pie
Get ready to experience some of the best vegan slices of pie you’ve ever had. Virtuous Pie is a Vancouver, BC-based restaurant founded in 2015 with mission of promoting the plant-based diet by creating food options that are affordable, fast and delicious. The wide variety of pizza options offered is almost as shocking as how incredibly good they are. The Meatball + Chevre Pizza($14) tastes a whole lot like a traditional pie. The kids are sure to love it and you are bound to wonder if the cheese isn’t actually cheese made from dairy. The answer is, “no”! The cheese is nut-based and made in-house as is their three-day dough, which makes incredible crust—not too thick and not too thin.

It’s hard to believe you can get full-flavored, creamy ice cream with out even a dash of milk in it, but Virtuous delivers in the frozen dessert department. Choose from a list of options that includes Pumpkin Pie + Pecan, Hawaiian Vanilla, Mint+ Dark Chocolate, Lavender + Lemon, Double Chocolate + Salted Caramel, and our favorite: Turmeric + Black Pepper. Eleven-year-old Seth Parker is a mini marketer in the making. The Brigham City, Utah sixth grader recently made news with his “Ice Cold Beer” sign, and if you’re wondering why (or how) a child could sell beer from a street-side stand—that’s the totally genius part!

Even though Parker’s sign may have given locals pause, all you need to do is read the fine print to understand. Look closely above the bold black lettering of the word “Beer” and you’ll see see a much smaller “Root” written in green.

The entrepreneurial 11-year-old, who set up a stand outside his home, used the attention-grabbing sign to draw customers in. And it worked! Not only did neighbors notice Parker’s sign, but so did the Brigham City Police Department. The PD posted a pic of the boy on its Facebook page, writing, “This young man, in the area of 600 South 200 East, has a twist on a lemonade stand. Yep, he’s selling beer … ROOT BEER, that is.”

The Brigham PD also added, “His marketing strategy has resulted in several calls to the BCPD, but apparently its paid off as business has been good.” Based on the Facebook comments, it looks like Brigham has a mogul in the making!

Ice Cream Donuts Are the Coolest Summer Craze

You love a good porter, and the subtleties of a fresh hop IPA aren’t lost on your palate. Luckily, with the current craft beer movement, more breweries and pubs are opening their doors to parents with kids in tow, creating fun, relaxing environments for all. Sure, this won’t replace your need for trivia night at your local bar, but now you won’t be limited on when and where you can enjoy the newest microbrew. From working farms that serve up fantastic ciders to world-famous breweries and gardens, keep reading to discover our favorite spots to grab a brew with babes in tow.

Ballast Point Brewpub - Disneyland Resort, Anaheim, CA

Rohlin A. via Yelp

The "happiest place on earth" just got happier since the Ballast Point Brewpub moved into Downtown Disney. The brewery features a 4,000-square-feet, glass-enclosed bar and restaurant space, as well as a 3,000-square-foot outdoor beer garden with “cabana-style seating,” perfect for crowd watching as you relax with a meal. The 100 tap lines will offer more than fifty styles of Ballast Point’s adventurous beer including some exclusive brews. Not only is the restaurant kid-friendly, but it is also hoping to help those less fortunate by donating one dollar of every $10 kids meal sold to No Kid Hungry.

New Glarus Brewing Co. - New Glarus -WI

Daniella D. via Yelp

While anyone is allowed to take the tour of the New Glarus Brewing Co., they have a strict policy where "anyone, regardless of age, who cries, spits, screams, fights or climbs on the machinery will politely be excused from our brewery tour." All kidding aside, visiting the brewery within Wisconsin's "Little Switzerland" is definitely a "must see." Located on a hilltop, you and the kids can take your own self-guided tour of the brewery's garden with plenty of photos opps. You will want to pack a few snacks since they do not offer food, but they do make their own root beer so everyone wins!

Gate City Brewing - Roswell, GA

Heather L. via Yelp

In what used to be two mechanic shops is now Gate City Brewing's two-story, brewhouse and taproom which is, as they say, "pro-friendly." Not only are kids and dogs welcome, but so is outside food (although local food trucks also make the rounds too.) The place offers nearly 20 house-brewed beers on draft and lots of fun including live music, brewery yoga, "paint and pint nights," comedy showcases and more.

Old Irving Brewing Co. – Chicago, Il

Julie A. via Yelp

Some families boast that the Old Irving Brewery is a great place to cuddle up during a rainy day. Not only will you find a beer here, but also beer-inspired cocktails, ciders, bourbons, whiskeys, rums, tequilas and more. For the kids (and for those who don't care to drink) they also offer a variety of sodas (house-made and Coca-Cola varieties), ginger beer, lemonade and ice tea. If you can manage to pull them away from the indoor bean bag toss area, your kids will love mac and cheese with bacon of other great finds on the huge kid-friendly menu.

Online: oldirvingbrewing.com

Elliott Bay Brewing Company - Three locations in the Seattle area, WA

Brad R. via Yelp

If you walk in the doors of Elliott Bay Brewing Company around dinnertime, there will be no doubt in your mind that this is where beer-loving parents come to enjoy a pint—and you’ll love that Elliott Bay is pretty noisy so no one will be hushing your little ones through your meal. Atlantic Brewing Company – Bar Harbor, ME

duluoz cats via Flickr

Atlantic Brewing Company was one of the first to hop (pun intended!) on the microbrew craze. Built on a 10-acre farm, the entire place was designed to create an experience where visitors could learn first-hand about small-scale beer production. There’s also a tasting room and beer garden, the very popular Mainely Meat BBQ restaurant, and a large outdoor courtyard area. The kids will love the playground in the back, and Atlantic Brewing even does flights of housemade soda tastings for the little ones! Also, check out ABC's Midtown location with Midtown Burgers (52 Cottage St.) and their sister winery, Bell Harbor Cellars (on Route 3) for their line of traditional red, whites, and local fruit wines.

When it comes to being kid friendly, Hopworks Urban Brewery (aka HUB) goes the extra mile. Port City Brewing – Alexandria, VA

Abigail W. via Yelp

Located right off the Holmes Run Trail, Port City Brewing is an ideal stop after that weekend family bike ride. It was awarded Best Small Brewery at the 2015 Great American Beer Festival, so you know the beer’s good here. There are ample picnic tables inside and out, there's a back room with seating/arcade games, and an upstairs bar area with darts, seating, and extra restrooms. There’s often live music on the weekend, and while they don’t serve food, you can usually find a food truck parked outside.

Station 26 Brewing – Denver, CO

Devin C. via Yelp

Craft beer fans know Denver as the home of the Great American Beer Festival, but it’s also home to an impressive list of breweries creating their own suds. There are several kid-friendly joints, but Station 26 is at the top of the list. There’s no restaurant, but there are pretzels for snacking, and a revolving selection of food trucks show up every day. There’s a grassy area that’s great for kids, a bunch of communal picnic tables with plenty of shade, and live music. Plus, the building was actually a real fire station in a past life. Oh, and the beer? It’s pretty awesome, too.

Finnriver Farm & Cidery – Chimacum, WA

Daria S. via Yelp

It's not exactly a brewery, but this awesome cidery located on the Olympic Peninsula is totally worth the drive, even with wee ones.  Not only is the cider seriously legit, but space is a destination in itself. There’s a working farm, a tasting room, and family-friendly music concerts during the summer.

Head's up foodies! Finnriver takes the slow food movement seriously. During the week they offer local snacks and goodies to create your own picnic. On the weekends, the grill is open and serving tasty eats like local brats, with kraut, homemade cider mustard, and seasonal vegetables or salads. Flossmoore Brewing Company – Flossmoor, IL

Courtesy Flossmoor Station

Stationed inside a 1906 train depot, this award-winning brewpub is located in the heart of historic Flossmoor, just 28 miles outside of Chicago. Kids love the Old Caboose Ice Cream Shoppe (open Thurs.-Sun. from Jun.-Sept.) that dishes up frozen yogurt and fun toppings like gummy bears, Snickers bar, and teddy grahams. There’s a kid’s menu with healthy options, and the adult fare is pretty tasty too. Think carving board charcuterie & cheese, burgers, baby back ribs, fish 'n' chips and more. Tiny guests also have a chance to write a story about Goober, the pub mascot (the two best stories are chosen once a month). The winner receives a free kids meal and the honor of having his or her story posted in the main entrance. There’s also a miniature train set that runs above the pub and bar area, and the brewery even does root beer tours for local second-grade classrooms!

Maple Island Brewing – Stillwater, MN

Maple Island Brewing Company via Yelp

If the patio overlooking the beautiful St. Croix River and the view of the famous Lift Bridge doesn’t win you over, the impressive collections of games, the free popcorn, the yoga and fun family events (cornhole tourney, anyone?) will. This family-owned brewery is located in the heart of historic Stillwater, and the community vibes are real—every Monday, $1 of every pint sold goes to a local non-profit organization. They also have menus from nearby restaurants on hand, and there’s a candy store right across the street. Golden Road Brewing – Los Angeles, CA

Thedavis M. via Yelp

It’s pretty clear that Golden Road Brewing Company understands the perils of dining with kids in public. The hand-crafted Bavarian soft pretzel is a family favorite at the Atwater Village location (5410 W San Fernando Rd.). There are lawn games for little wiggle worms, you can catch a train going by every now and again (the brewery is housed inside a former Southern Pacific switching station), and there’s even a special patio just for dogs. And, here’s an insider tip: make use of the valet parking. It’s free and beats parking a few blocks away. Self-parking is scarce. Other locations can be found in Downtown Los Angeles (317 S Broadway) and Anaheim (2210 E Orangewood Ave.).

There are games, puzzles and a custom-painted scavenger hunt on the walls (complete the hunt, get a prize!).  There’s a full kids menu and, the best part? Laurelwood Brewing Company - Portland, OR

Ricky Pike via Flickrr

Self-described as “the place where friends and family meet,” it comes as no surprise that Laurelwood Brewing is ideal for a family gathering. With two patios, two kids’ play areas and a warm atmosphere, you can tell that this establishment was opened by parents with young children. Order the kids’ food first (long list of entrees, plus a side, drink and dessert) and get it earlier if your hungry children are chomping at the bit. There is a phenomenon that is working in our favor these days. Microbreweries are popping up all over the Puget Sound region and many are catering to both pets and kids. And while many of these places serve a full menu, a number of them are strictly breweries which means they actually encourage you to bring in your own food (pass the Goldfish crackers!). If you love craft beer, but thought your days of visiting brewhouses were over, we’ve handpicked 20 spots where you can grab a pint with your pint-sized peeps.

Hale’s Ales
Tucked between the Fremont and Ballard neighborhoods, Hale’s Ales is always full of families, even during happy hour (weekdays from 3 p.m.–6 p.m.). Besides the tasty beers, we love Hale’s because they use as many local companies on their menu as possible. Populuxe Brewing
A popular Ballard nanobrewery, Populuxe threw its hat into the local brewery ring in March of 2013. Operating out of an off-the-main-drag warehouse that happens to have an excellent fenced-in patio, Populuxe offers picnic tables, an all-ages corn hole court, awesome pinball and arcade games from the Seattle Pinball Museum and lots of room for kids to roam. Naked City Taphouse & Brewery
Hearing your kiddos giggle about going to a place called “Naked City” is priceless – trust us! But sadly for them, Naked City Taphouse and Brewery is not actually clothing optional (which you should probably reiterated with your literal four-year old!). Greenwood families love popping in here for dinner or weekend lunch – despite a somewhat limited kids’ menu, all of the options are very thoughtful, including many vegetarian choices. Stoup Brewing
We fell in love with the distinctive NW Red ale pre-parenthood, but thankfully, this Ballard brewery with a killer patio is perfectly hospitable to tiny tikes. Try one of the beergeek-approved brews, and procure a snack from the Stoup-er snack machine—a clever vending machine stocked with chips, nuts and even a few soda options—or visit for dinner to take advantage of the daily changing visiting food truck (they stay longer hours on the weekends). Fremont Brewing’s Urban Beer Garden has been described as industrial, but also intimate with its 18-foot long community tables. Open daily from 11 a.m.-9 p.m., parents will enjoy the dozen or so taps and ciders on hand while the kiddies sip on complimentary (housemade) cherry soda. Optimism Brewing Company
The place you frequented the most in your 20s isn’t necessarily the kind of place that would welcome you with kids in tow. But Optimism Brewing Company—a sprawling Capitol Hill brewery inside a renovated old auto showroom—is the sort of place cool enough for the old you, but warm and welcoming to you (and your dogs and offspring) now. Optimism’s creative craft beers are characterized by tasting notes rather than names, so go for the adjectives that draw you. If you’re hungry, order delivery right to the beer hall, or pick up some grub from one of the rotating food trucks in the courtyard. This SoDo brewery is a rare breed: equal parts awesome happy hour drink destination and family-friendly restaurant with really decent food options. The weekend brunch (11 a.m.-2 p.m.) is particularly great—get your mini-me the breakfast sandwich from the kids’ menu, while you chow down the hop-seasoned pork belly Benedict. Toys, books and coloring options (plus an awesome little train table) make the wait for food easy. As for drinks, try the seasonal Evergreen IPA or Emerald ISA for a taste of locally sourced hops and grains.

Middleton Brewing Co.
It’s no surprise that the folks at Middleton Brewing Company are kid-friendly. In addition to creating their own “normal” beer, they are also known to brew up batches of beer made from Trix breakfast cereal and other similar fare. Located in the International Marketplace in South Everett, Middleton serves up their own signature pizzas including the Pizza Monster (served with a brown ale marinara), the BBQ Supreme (with smoked porter BBQ sauce) and Beer Cheese Pizza (with beer cheese soup used as the sauce). They also serve a variety of sandwiches, salads, soups and nachos; and kids can wash it all down with a bottle of Jones Soda.

Crucible Brewing
You can use Crucible Brewing as a reward stop after a long bike ride on the Interurban Trail. (Hint: there’s even a bike rack stationed in front). The place is kid- and dog-friendly, so Fido can even come too. However, the best time to try them out is on the weekends when they are regularly visited by food trucks on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

And while they don’t serve food here, you can bring your own. They also offer games of corn hole and shuffleboard and sports are always playing on the big screen. McMenamins
Based in Oregon, McMenamins brewery and restaurants have already made a pretty big impression in the greater Seattle area. Each location is family-friendly, serves up delicious pub-style food and comes with a welcoming homey atmosphere. Most locations brew their beer right on the spot and offer brewery tours. However, each place is unique and has its own quirks too, so check ’em all out.

Chuck’s Hop Shop
Chuck’s Hop Shop may not be a brewery, but it makes our list for three reasons: 1. Chuck’s stocks 1,000 different bottles of beer and offers several on draft; 2. Both the Greenwood and Central District beer shop/neighborhood gathering spaces are typically packed with as many kids as adults on the weekends; and 3. There are scoops of Full Tilt ice cream for dessert. There may not be a lot of room for strollers, but there’s plenty of space to grab a table, drink a pint of cider, tuck into fish and chips from a local food truck and lick lemon marshmallow ice cream cones with the kiddos.

Finnriver Farm & Cidery
OK, so it’s not technically a brewery. But this cidery on the Olympic Peninsula is absolutely worth the drive from Seattle, even with the tiniest of tykes. First, they make some seriously amazing cider (the dry-hopped cider will even convince the most ardent cider critics). Second, the space itself is a destination: there’s a fully functioning farm, a tasting room and even family-friendly music concerts on summer Sundays. Go when you have a whole weekend day to kill—you’ll want to enjoy at your leisure.

Want to try your hand at brewing beer yourself? Bob’s Homebrew Supply (2821 N.E. 55th St., Seattle) is a super kid-friendly store where you can pick up your supplies. On the weekends, it is filled with families and the owners are always pleased to see kids in the shop.

La Vida Veggie
Beaverton is lucky to have this Latin-inspired vegan restaurant. Fill your table with tapas like the salsa sampler plate and then follow them up with grilled sandwich. Little eaters will love the grilled cheese, and who could resist a Portobello pesto lunch? If you feel like having a bowl you can choose between brown rice or quinoa and then choose from the winter, taco or green goddess bowl. For more traditional Mexican fare there are enchiladas, quesadilla’s and tostadas—but you don’t have to stop there. Before you get up and go, grab a gluten free cupcake or slice of cake for desert! Or maybe just order one to go.

Check out Sunday brunch, too. In a hurry? Text or call in an order for pickup.

All of their menu items are 100% plant-based and kids can order veggie burgers, hot dogs, grilled cheese, nut butter and jelly and hummus sandwiches from the children’s menu. Seating is limited.

A bit of a surprise for a burger joint, this place serves breakfast. Order up some pancakes or a breakfast bowl. There’s even Tempeh Bacon. Online ordering is available too.

Off the Griddle
You’ve probably seen the line wrapped around the corner outside this vegetarian and vegan spot. People hit this eatery in droves for the waffles with inventive toppings, hash browns, gravy and breakfast burritos. While every dish is delectable, waffles are this restaurant’s specialty. It got its start as the “Off the Waffle” cart. Everything is vegan except for poached eggs and (optional) Tillamook cheddar cheese. The warm and welcoming atmosphere is perfect for bringing the kids, especially on a quieter weekday.

That’s right! Turmeric + Black pepper makes for a beautiful yellow scoop that is surprisingly sweet and sure to bring smiles.
