Where Will Meghan Markle & Prince Harry Will Celebrate Baby Archie’s Christening?

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been on a different path to parenthood than Prince William and Duchess Kate. While it was heavily speculated that the royal baby would have a home birth, things didn’t exactly go that way.

The birth certificate for the new young royal was just filed publicly and the details reveal that Archie was born at the private Portland hospital in Westminster  London and not in the couple’s private home at Frogmore Cottage as many had anticipated. This birth was not the only famous one at the hospital. Sarah, Duchess of York gave birth to Pricesses Beatrice and Eugenie there and it was also the hospital where Victoria Beckham gave birth.

The details of the birth certificate also listed Meghan’s full legal name and title, which is listed as Rachel Meghan Markle Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex. The birth of Archie Harrison Mountbatten-WIndsor on May 6 places him seventh in line for the British throne.

Baby fever seems to have struck all over the country right now: these viral baby boom photos are proof there really must be something in the water at these workplaces, because everyone is pregnant!

Nearly half of the 15 teachers at Oak Street Elementary School in Goddard, Kansas are expecting. Two of the seven teachers just welcomed their babies this week and there are five more on the way. That’s certainly a lot of substitutes in the future for the students of Oak Street.

“I was very excited, obviously, because this is great news,” Ashley Miller, the school’s principal told ABC News. “After the third one I was a little in shock, the fourth one I was really in shock, the fifth one I didn’t know what to say and by the seventh one I had to remember to congratulate her because my first words were, ‘Are you kidding me?’”

Oak Street Elementary isn’t the only place experiencing a baby boom. Seven nurses all working in the same unit at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan are pregnant at the same time. Of the 18 nurses in the neurology unit, seven nurses are expecting, with three due this month and two others who just had babies earlier this year.

Not to be outdone, nine nurses at Maine Medical Center in Portland—in the labor and delivery unit no less—are pregnant! All the expectant moms are due between April and July.

“It is really nice coming to work and seeing other people who are just as pregnant watching their bellies pop and just talking about these experiences that we are going through together,” nurse Amanda Spear told WMTW. At least they all know what to expect!

How Long Do Parents Lose Sleep After Having a Kid? You Should Probably Sit Down

Scholastic recently released the findings from its seventh edition of its Kids & Family Reading Report. The report includes survey data from over 1,000 children ages 6 through 17 and their parents, along with 678 parents of kiddos between birth and five. One of the key findings was a sharp decline in frequency of and enjoyment in reading in kids between the ages of eight and nine-years, known as the “decline by nine.”

While 57 percent of eight-year-olds reported reading books for fun between five and seven days a week, only 35 percent of nine-year-olds did so. There was also a decline in the number of nine-year-olds who say they love reading and who think reading books is fun.

Lauren Tarshis, SVP & Editor-in-Chief/Publisher of Scholastic Magazines and author of the bestselling I Survived series said, “It is worrisome that the Kids & Family Reading Report shows us that many kids are losing their connection to reading when they need it most, in third grade. But the research also has a powerful message from kids that they want to read, but not just any book.”

So what can you do to prevent this potential decline? And how can you help your kiddo to find books that they actually want to read? The answer lies in more diverse books.

Pinkney added, “When a young reader finds a story that positively reflects his or her own story—or presents the stories of people not like themselves—that child becomes encouraged to read more. This has a direct impact on how kids view their place in the world, and helps them develop empathy and open-mindedness. Tomorrow’s leaders need to see themselves in books. The report empowers us to help kids do that.”

Along with adding diversity to your child’s lit lineup, act as a reading role model. Scholastic’s survey found that children who read often are often surrounded by people who enjoy reading. A whopping 82 percent of kids who are considered frequent readers reported knowing a lot of people who enjoy reading. In comparison, only 34 percent of infrequent readers said they know plenty of people who like to read. This may mean if you show enjoyment in reading, your child will too.

Beyond showing your own enjoyment in reading, the findings of Scholastic’s report underscores the importance of providing easy access to books (both at home and in school) and encouraging children to choose literature that interests them.

Massachusetts state lawmakers Rep. Paul A. Schmid III and Rep. Bradley H. Jones, Jr.  want to enact a ban on youth tackle football. More specifically, they want to put the ban in place for kids in seventh grade and under from playing this contact sport.

Massachusetts is hardly the first state to consider this type of youth tackle football ban. Lawmakers in California, Illinois, New York, New Jersey and Maryland have all considered similar bans in the past.

The current bill, HD.2501—also known as An Act For No Organized Head Impacts to School Children—already has 15 co-sponsors. if passed, the bill could help reduce the number of head injuries sustained by young football players in the Bay State. If a child who either becomes unconscious or gets a concussion during extracurricular game play (football or otherwise) Massachusetts law already requie a doctor’s or certified athletic trainer’s authorization before that child can get back onto the field.

If the bill passes, schools, leagues or any other group that allows children in seventh grade or below to engage in tackle football play are subject to a $2,000 to $5,000 fine. If a child (in grade seven or under) is seriously harmed during game play, the state can fine the organized school or group violating the law up to $10,000.

The bill was filed in January 2019 and has not yet been referred to committee.

Yet Another Reason Why Youth Tackle Football Is Risky for Kids, New Study Finds

These NFL Players Say Tackle Football Isn’t Safe for Kids & the Youth Sport Should End

Having kids attend preschool programs can have a significant impact on preparing them for entering kindergarten, but what are the long-term benefits of pre-K? A study has a surprising answer.

The study, out of Duke University, found that students who attended a structured, state-sponsored pre-K program were more likely to excel in reading, writing and math compared to kids who did not attend the same program. It also found that kids who had structured learning starting at age four were less likely to require special education or to have to repeat a grade.

photo: Mike Fox via Unsplash

The study followed the progress of sixth, seventh and eighth grade students born between 1988 and 2000, tracking data like year-end math and reading scores all the way until eighth grade. It also tracked personal data, like birth weight, parents’ education, race and socioeconomic status and found that, for the most part, the benefits were the same across the board.

However, in certain cases, the benefits were greater for kids at a determined disadvantage. For example, students who were economically disadvantaged gained more in test scores than their peers who were not economically disadvantaged.

It is important to note that this study was limited to just 900,000 students in two state-funded programs in North Carolina with the intention of evaluating the financial investment into these specific programs. It’s not to say that these findings aren’t significant outside of North Carolina. Broader research would need to be conducted to confirm similar findings for universal pre-K programs in general—and this study is a great start.

Sorry, Cable: Netflix Reigns Supreme on American TV Screens

It’s T-minus four days and counting until Christmas, and there’s a good chance your mailbox has already been inundated with holiday cards. Some families go for the classic summer or fall family portrait while others go for more, um, “stylistic” approaches. Here are seven of the funniest family Christmas cards to make even the biggest humbug crack a smile.

A Very Cretaceous Christmas

tdastru via reddit

According to reddit, this is what happens when "dad's in charge of the family Christmas card." Not going to lie, this is a pretty adorable and creative Christmas card—and I have a pretty good idea what everyone will be for Halloween next year, too.

A Very "Down Home" Christmas

CartoonAndrew via reddit

Redditor CartoonAndrew (also known as hellvetika on Instagram) is a professional drag performer. He and his family have a tradition to do a completely off-the-wall Christmas card every year; according to reddit, they're in their seventh year of Christmas card mayhem. This lovely take on the annual portrait is from four years ago. But where on Earth did they find—much less obtain—a pig?

"Merry Christmas, Ya Filthy Animal!"

There's sibling rivalry, and then there's this. Seems like this little Christmas elf took "away in a manger" a bit too literally on that whole "away" part.

Ummmm....

tamagothecat via reddit

I'll let redditor tamagothecat explain this lovely rendition of the Christmas story himself: "Me and my cat's Christmas card was deemed "sacrilegious" by a few people. What do you think?"

Yes. The correct answer here is yes.

All the Single Ladies

This viral Christmas card photo took Twitter by storm last month. Poor Emily. But really, aren't we all Emily at one point or another in our lives?

And Then There's This Very Special Single Lady

When you've been single your whole life, you have to get a little creative come Christmas-time, as this redditor did in 2016.

Mama Tried.

wankershim4ever via reddit

According to reddit, this was Christmas card photo this family went with in 2016*. Honestly, after the crazy rush of winter holidays, I feel like this is how every parent feels once the New Year finally rolls around.

*As far as I can tell, no babies were harmed (for life) in the making of this holiday card.

Merry Christmas!
