It’s not rocket science. The people we open up to are the people we like. We share most freely with our spouse or our dearest friends or a trusted relative. Maybe we share with the Uber driver, but that’s probably because that Uber driver is a good listener. Or maybe he makes you laugh with a story about a previous passenger that wanted a ride to the grocery store at 2 a.m. to bowl watermelons down the aisles. When you find yourself opening up to tell that driver about your grandpa, who also loved to bowl, you’re not feeling judged. You’re not annoyed. You’re enjoying yourself. You open up because you like chatting with the dude.

Our kids are no different. When talking openly engages them, when it’s interesting and fun, and when they feel safe, they’re inclined to speak freely. When conversation feels like a chore, well then…who likes chores?

Sharing Is Caring.
Sharing about ourselves is an act of giving. Revealing personal information can make us uncomfortable and it’s often much easier not to share. There is vulnerability in opening up; we instinctually hold back if we feel unsafe or if it just doesn’t feel good.

And yet, no matter how fun, non-judgmental, and warm of a parent you are, it’s the order of nature—parents want to know, know, know. And there are times or phases in a child’s life that all they want to do is roll eyes and not share. The age-old saga. You ask and they gape. So how to get them gabbing when your parenty-ness and their kiddiness gets you in a quiet rut?

Give Your Kid the Power.
We all like to feel as if we’re “in the know.” Whether we’re sharing hard-won wisdom gleaned through lived experience, how to disguise kale in kid food, or juicy gossip, having information that others deem valuable makes us feel important. Try making your child feel like what they’ve got in that little head of theirs is valuable. Rather than “What did you do at school today?” try “Teach me something you learned today.” They’ve got stuff they can teach? Suddenly, they’re in charge, and with that comes the feeling that they’re “in the know” and perhaps the feeling that they’ll want to share.

The Spotlight Can Be Blinding.
Questions can make some kids feel like they’re on the spot. Try a simple rewording like “I was thinking about you on the playground today and I wonder who you played with.” It’s a subtle difference from “Who the heck did you play with at recess?” And yet it can change the flow of conversation. In addition, “Kids often open up more in the car, on a walk, or in the dark—all times when eye contact is limited,” says Dr. Laura Markham, Clinical Psychologist and author of three best-selling books on peaceful parenting.

Go First.
Let me tell you what I did today…You’re curious, right? When you tell your child about your day, and not just the dull “I went to work” kind of stuff, but the good, nitty-gritty interesting stuff, you grease the wheel for a good convo. Who doesn’t love a story about a co-worker dribbling mustard on his shirt at lunch? Plus, when you mention how you loaned him the spare shirt from your gym bag, you model kindness and preparedness for the kiddo. It might be an underhanded way of dropping some wisdom nuggets on the youngster, but there’s no lesson like a disguised lesson in the game of parenting.

Games. They’re Fun.
Two Truths and a Lie. The Would-You-Rather game. 20 Questions. Even a simple guessing game with hints. “Seems like you’re bummed out. I’ll bet you a lollipop I can guess why.”  Yes, your child may figure out what you’re up to. But bringing fun into a conversation could be all that’s needed to get your child chatty.

Ritualize.
However you shape it, be it Taco Tuesday or Sunday Funday, cement a time when you share. Some families share what they’re grateful for that week. Others do Rose Thorn Bud, discussing their best moment, their worst, and what they’re looking forward to. Add a special element to make the ritual unique (like ice cream sandwiches or a TV show your family loves) and the event will really be a show stopper.

Don’t Give Advice. It’s Annoying.
It’s hard to resist giving suggestions. Especially when kids are complaining. It’s our instinct as parents to want to fix things for our children. But according to Adele Faber, co-author of How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk, when parents try to talk kids out of what they’re feeling that’s the fastest way to get them to clam up. “Instead,” she suggests, “nod to let him know you’re actively listening, or say something neutral like, ‘Oh, that’s what’s bothering you.’ Or ‘Sounds as if that could be pretty upsetting.” This way you’re demonstrating to your child that you get it.

Drive Carpool.
Most likely if you find your child talking less to you, it’s because they’re talking more to their friends. This is completely developmentally appropriate. Still you don’t want teens or pre-teens going dark on you. Often kids start gabbing with their buddies and forget you’re there—giving you some fodder to follow up with them on later. All’s fair in love and parenting after all.

And If All Else Fails, Go Ahead and Butter ‘Em Up.
Do something out of the ordinary with your child that they will like. Take them out to breakfast and let them be late to school. Take them shopping for a new hat or dress or pair of kicks. Go on a bike ride. Build that LEGO hamster wheel your kid has been begging you to help with. Happy kids have loose lips.

27 Family Halloween Costume Ideas You Have to See to Believe

First-Ever Adaptive Disney Halloween Costumes Now Available on shopDisney.com

Target’s Adaptive Halloween Costumes Are Back

Today’s theme is: a time you were at your lowest and nobody knew.

This was Alex’s grade seven graduation day. We were beyond ecstatic. Alex did not enjoy elementary school for the most part. Grade seven was the exception. It was a perfect mix of a fantastic teacher, wonderful aide and a group of lovely kids who all made him feel comfortable and accepted.

The majority of the rest of his time there was hard on all of us. There were so many times when he resisted going. To the point of us having to pry his fingers off the doorframe to not be late.

We got a lot of calls, emails and daily reports about how he wasn’t able to do this or that. He wasn’t even able to just ‘be’ at school. It was disheartening and often traumatic, to say the least. This was a period of years when he had a lot of meltdowns. We were almost always on eggshells waiting for the next one to happen.

This graduation day started off great. We were so happy to be moving on while simultaneously anxious about what high school would bring. I pressed his clothes and helped him dress. I took a moment to admire my handsome boy in his new shirt and blazer that I had bought special for the occasion. He fidgeted a little but managed.

I proceeded to get myself ready and it all started to hit me. The auditorium would soon be filled with all the school staff, students and lots and lots of families. What if it’s all too much for him? What if he has an epic meltdown and we need to physically escort him out of there screaming and crying with all those eyes on us? My face got hot at the thought. All the memories from the past eight years came back. The thought of what if high school is no better?

My mind went down the rabbit hole, and before I knew it, I was breathing really shallow. I felt like I was suffocating. I started to sweat and tremble. I raced to the window and threw it open and stuck my head out for some fresh air, but it was already warm out so that didn’t help. I was having a full on panic attack. I realized it too which made me panic even more. Thankfully, I turned the cold water on and splashed my face and neck and it kind of snapped me out.

I then proceeded to bawl my eyes out and silently ask why everything has to be so hard and why can’t we just enjoy this day like everyone else? I took a few minutes to collect myself and reapply my now smeared makeup.

I didn’t tell anyone. We went to the graduation ceremony and ended up having one of the best days ever with Alex. He was happy and smiling and we got some amazing pictures. No meltdowns. Probably helped that we kept reminding him after that day that he would never have to go back and then we were getting a treat after, lol.

I remember sitting in that school auditorium, looking around at all the parents and thinking, “If you only knew what it took to get us here.”

This post originally appeared on The Autism Ride on Facebook.

Hi! My name is Laura and I'm a mom of two beautiful kids in Vancouver, Canada. I write a blog on Facebook called The Autism Ride, all about the ups and downs in life with our teenaged son on the spectrum.

I just spent a few minutes looking at my “Today in the Past” photos of Facebook, including a few pics of my husband and me with our newborn daughter, who is 10 now.

Oh, I’d give anything to go back to those days…Actually, wait. That was REALLY hard, and there were a lot of tears, exhaustion, and anxiety

(Why don’t they tell you that in a diaper commercial!)

Looking back, though, I realize that this time could have been so much easier and more enjoyable if I had seen things a little differently. I wish I could go back and tell my younger self what I know now.

1. Listen to your instincts and intuition. While I was super confident before having the baby in my ability to care for her, I quickly lost that confidence when I was holding a crying baby who wouldn’t latch and everyone kept telling me what I should or shouldn’t do. I wish I had had the guts to tell them what I felt in my heart so strongly. In hindsight, I knew what was best for me and my daughter, but I didn’t trust myself enough.

I’m not saying to ignore medical professionals or the well-meant advice of other moms, but voice your own thoughts first and make sure you are heard and seen. Because, after all, mother does know best.

2. A crying baby is not the end of the world. Although, truth be told, it can sure seem that way sometimes. Most of the time, though, they’re just trying to get what they need. So, be patient and calmly offer what she might need. Food, a clean diaper, sleep, connection, and love. Nine times out of ten, that will do the trick. And if not, keep calm and seek help.

Sometimes, there can be other issues that are causing the crying. Our daughter had reflux, so there was a lot of crying, very little sleep, and as a result, an overtired baby, who was very hard to settle. This is all a hindsight 20/20 thing, though, because back then, I took me weeks to figure it out, and I put some of the pieces together months later.

3. The sun will rise again. I felt the most lonely during nighttime when I was walking round and round in my room with a crying baby who wouldn’t fall asleep despite my best efforts. She was overtired, and so was I. I think those were the times I cried the most in the beginning. What I’d love to whisper in my past self’s ear is that this too shall pass. After this night, there will be daylight again. The baby will sleep eventually and in a few weeks, she’ll have figured out this night and day thing.

4. It’s just a phase. “This too shall pass,” as my Dad used to say. Every mom has probably heard this tip and given it to another mom, but while we’re in the trenches, it can be hard to remember. Everything is a phase with little ones. So, sometimes, the best you can do is just ride out the waves. And, for better or worse, it all really does fly by.

5. Know what to expect. I often wish I’d done more research on what to expect in the newborn phase (or even past that). Obviously, you can’t know everything, and every baby is different, but what I learned is that doing a little reading upfront can ease a lot of fears and help figure out what’s not working before it drives you insane.

6. Do things that make you feel normal. I struggled for the longest time to consolidate my past identity with my new identity as a mom. To be honest, I still do sometimes, but what has helped immensely is writing down when I feel most like myself and doing those things as often as possible.

Also, create routines. I found that routine activities made me feel happy and gave me a sense of control.

7. Ask for help. Can’t stress this enough! It does take a village to raise a kid, so don’t think you have to do it all by yourself. Ask your spouse, your family, or your friends to help out. It could be as simple as having someone to talk to when you’re covered in baby spit-up and in desperate need of a grown-up conversation. Or it could be a couple of hours of sleep or time to yourself. Have a friend do grocery shopping for you, or ask your spouse to take care of laundry.

8. Relax into it. This is definitely the hardest to do but makes all the difference. I still haven’t mastered it years into motherhood, but those times when I’ve managed to slow down, breathe and relax into it have been the best. Even when it happens as you’re trying to put your baby down and it’s been an hour already. Especially then.

9. Loosen up and let go. Bruce Lee once said, “Be like water, my friend.” In other words, go with the flow. You’re bound to have spit-up on your shirt 24/7, a messy home, crazy-lady hair, and a never-ending pile of laundry.

You could either stress about it or just let it go. Don’t worry, one day you’ll discover you’ve worn the same shirt for the whole day. You will get back on track with your laundry. You most definitely will find time for personal care again. One day, I promise!

So, if you’re down in the trenches right now, or about to become a new mom for the first (or third) time, I hope this post offered some support, understanding, and most importantly, a gentle reminder that the hard parts will pass, and the joy will only grow.

You’ve got this, mama!

11 Fresh Mom & Me Styles That Make a Statement

More than 90,000 babies competed for a spot as the 2021 Gerber Spokesbaby, but only one could prevail! And his parents have a fantastic backstory, too. Four-month-old Zane Kahin from Florida is this year’s winner after his mom beat cancer and the odds.

Erin Kahin and husband Mike hoped to have kids, but they weren’t sure if Erin could conceive naturally after she faced treatment for breast cancer, including a double mastectomy. But Baby Zane surprised the family and entered the world on February 3!

“Zane is a little comedian – he loves to crack himself up and even wakes up laughing. His cheerful attitude, captivating giggles, and playful smile can light up any room!” his parents noted.

As for the prize, the Kahins received $25,000 in cash, free Gerber products for up to one year and a wardrobe provided by Gerber Childrenswear. You can buy a bodysuit or t-shirt design inspired by Zane and the company will make a product donation of equal value to the charitable organization Delivering Good. Zane will also keep busy as the “Chief Taste Tester” for new baby food products and serve as Gerber’s “Chief Growing Officer.”

The Gerber Spokesbaby is an annual award inspired by a 1928 company contest to find a face to represent their baby food. Artist Dorothy Hope Smith’s charcoal sketch of a neighbor’s child perfectly captured the spirit and it’s been the face of all Gerber packaging since 1931.
